Haitian relief efforts: Brangelina donates, George Clooney to host telethon

Brad Pitt Takes a Stressed Angeline Jolie Out in NYC!

As the death toll climbs in Haiti, many people around the world are looking for a way to contribute and help in any way. The Huffington Post compiled a good working list that includes organizations like the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, Save the Children and more – go here for HuffPo’s list, and beware of scammers who prey on these kinds of situations.

I saw on CNN this morning that Doctors Without Borders has already arrived on the in Port-au-Prince and has set up field hospitals to deal with the thousands (hundreds of thousands) of injured. I also saw John King and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussing how terrible the medical situation is there – amputated limbs, no running water, fears of any number of outbreaks, from malaria, to cholera, to dengue fever. Doctors Without Borders is an incredible organization with field hospitals in some of the most treacherous situations in the world. So it makes sense that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie decided to funnel their money there.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have made good on their promise to reach out to victims of the massive earthquake that struck the island of Haiti on Tuesday.

The couple donated $1 million to the Doctors Without Borders for the organization’s emergency medical operations in Haiti, UsMagazine.com has confirmed.

“It is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades,” Jolie — who has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations since 2001 — said in a statement.

Pitt — who, along with Jolie, has been a longtime supporter of Doctors Without Borders — added, “We understand the first response is critical to serve the immediate needs of countless people who are now displaced from their homes, are suffering trauma, and most require urgent care.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Pitt, 46, and Jolie, 30, said they were “devastated by the news” and pledged their support.

In a statement, the couple said, “We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter.”

On Tuesday, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake and several strong aftershocks ravaged the poverty-stricken nation, and thousands have been feared dead.

Donate now to support Doctors Without Borders’ work in Haiti at their official site, or find out how else you can help at the Red Cross (text “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 to the organization).

[From Us Weekly]

When Brangelina released their statement yesterday, many of you condemned them for speaking out so fast, or whatever the complaint was. But when I read their statement, I thought of two things that could be contributing to their swiftness: first, there are many United Nations personnel in-country, lost, wounded or just MIA in Haiti, and my guess is that Angelina knows at least a few of them, and she’s genuinely worried; secondly, I would think that Brad, Angelina and Wyclef Jean are close enough that Wyclef asked them or encouraged them to say something publicly. Just a thought.

In other Haiti-related news, The Hollywood Reporter’s columnist Roger Friedman spoke to George Clooney, and apparently Clooney is planning on organizing another telethon, this time on MTV, with the profits going to Haitian relief efforts. Apparently, MTV has already agreed, and it will air January 22, and many celebrities are expected to appear.

When I first read the headline, I thought it said Brangelina donates George Clooney. : /
I don’t like this couple very much, but donating a million is pretty great.

  2. Attagirl says:

PLEASE DONATE TO HAITI RELIEF!! I just donated $100 to the Red Cross and $100 to Care – wish I could add a few more zeros to the amounts – however I encourage everyone to donate as even $25 can make a difference. BTW, for you Canadian readers, the Canadian government is matching donations to the Canadian Care organization dollar for dollar.

  3. dude says:

Im actually glad they spoke so soon! Im will be donating & thrilled they are having a marathon. I hope someone will rush to our needs if we are ever in such crisis!

  4. princess pea says:

I don’t want to argue about this, because really the situation is terrible and way bigger than any celebrity themselves. But you expressed confusion about people scoffing at the Brange announcement, so I’ll explain. If you actually compare Wyclef’s statements (via YeleHaiti and twitter) he doesn’t really use the first person at all. Because it isn’t about him, in his eyes, it’s about the people in need in Haiti. Brange, on the other hand, is “we… we… we…” That’s what I, personally, found distasteful about it. That and the Loonies claiming that it was necessary to get the word out. If there is someone out there who wouldn’t have known about the massive quake and ensuing devastation WITHOUT the Brange announcement, they have serious problems.

Otherwise, I have no complaints. And like I said, the complaint is petty in light of the serious nature of the situation. Frankly, any and all help (no matter how much people toot their own horn about it) is a good thing at this time.

  5. buellblaster says:

He should shave off that chin mullet, put it on ebay and donate the proceeds to the relief effort.

  6. CiCi says:

even $1 or $5 can make a difference! as for brangie – i don’t give a rat’s ass if they’re doing it for publicity if it can make 10 more people give $5.

  7. Toe says:

Angie is 34 years old, not 30 like the article said. I hated the first sentence “made good on their promise..” like they would not give.
I’m glad that Clooney is helping too.

  8. bite me says:

yet walmart has only donated $500,000

  9. cee says:

Brad and Angie are always generous and I am sure they have reached out to Wyclef Jean.

  10. Toe says:

    @ P.Pea.
I see nothing wrong with Angie’s statement. If they use “we” all the time or not, they are still refferring the the catastrofe of Haiti. The whole statement is about Haiti, not about them at all. You see what you wanna see. Angie is a person who went to different disaster places around the world, she saw things first hand. We cant go crazy about a statement that HELPS others.

  11. alex says:

Some people find the stupidiest thing to complained about, so what if they said “we”. If it was another couple who said it some of you would not even say anything. Life is to short, just ask the people in Haiti to be hating and b*tching.

  12. zap says:

what ever their motivation and that of other fame hungry celebrities , the money will help people who need it greatly , and that is all that counts in the end

  13. princess pea says:

@ Toe – Sure. I said I wouldn’t argue about it. I just wanted to explain because Kaiser’s “whatever the complaint was” implied that she didn’t understand.

  14. alex says:

Toe, thank you for that post

  15. Firestarter says:

So what if Wal-Mart only donated $500k?! It’s $500k that they didn’t have before. Any money is better than no money.

  16. bite me says:

really a majoy comporation like walmart can only muster 500,000

  17. Praise St. Angie! says:

“If it was another couple who said it”

but that’s just it. no other couple has made an announcement that they did donate or that they’re going to donate.

or, at least, none that I’m aware of.

has anybody heard a similar statement (not a general one of “donate now” but one touting an actual donation) from any other celebs or celeb couples?

  18. bite me says:

lance armstrong made a statement via his website livestrong

  19. I’m with you guys

  20. Lee says:

This is such a difficult, horrible situation. There may actually be reluctance to donate, given the scale of corruption that inevitably follows when “officials” are in charge of dispersing funds on the ground. A large portion of the vast amounts of money people donated after the tsunami has disappeared into the ether, and victims are still without their promised homes. That sort of thing should make people very cautious about which agencies get their dollars.

  21. Praise St. Angie! says:

    just read Armstong’s statement.

while he is a celeb, and he is announcing a donation, he is announcing it as the person in charge of a charitable organization, not as a celebrity donator.

similar, I agree, but not quite the same thing. I see his announcement as the same type we’d hear from Doctors without Borders or Yele.

  22. bite me says:

pitt and jolie made the the donation via their jolie-pitt foundation

  23. Venus says:

To donate money is great. But why must they tell the whole world that they do that. Hey people, do that in quiet.

  24. lilred says:

I heard this morning the Canadian government just sent a plane load of disaster relief people and supplies with more to follow.

  25. BitterBetty says:

Phew… Thank goodness Brangelina has announced their donations and intentions to the world. we would all be lost without them.

    Can you say messiah complex?

  26. bite me says:

the canadaian government of Canada has announced it will MATCH every donation up to $50 in support of Haiti from now until February 12.

  27. ien says:

    i completely agree with CiCi
if brad and angelina get even one more person to donate money then they’ve done something formidable.

AND they donated a million dollars from their foundation to aid Haiti.

    i don’t understand the negativity.
a good thing is a good thing.

  28. Rose says:

Good for them for speaking up and donating, shame so many sad sacks on this site are so negative.

  29. Kiki says:

I think it’s better to announce how much you are donating (especially when it’s a big figure),so that the people who are affected by this tragedy know that there are celebrities/politicians/organizations helping out. If they did it quietly, perhaps some of the people managing the money might not use it as it should be.

  30. lucy2 says:

@princess pea, your post explains what I felt about it.

So far I’ve been able to send in donations to Red Cross, Doctors without Borders, and Unicef, and would like to do more soon. I think the text message donation is a great idea, and word has really spread fast online about that, so hopefully a lot of people are able to contribute.
I thought I had read that Dw/oB was already stationed in Haiti before the earthquake and maybe have lost many people themselves. Any support they can receive is crucial.

  31. hatsumomo says:

Yeah, i just dont get the hate either. C’mon people, a huge fucking disaster just occurred. Really, I think the people of Haiti could give a shit where the money for relief efforts come from or who sent it. Its getting there. and we all know,or be aware of, emergency relief efforts aren’t cheap. Every single fucking minute that goes by another person, husband , mother, child, baby is dying because they dont have the goddamn doctor there yet, or medicine, or no one is paying to fly in heavy equipment to reach buried survivors. So for all those bitching and complaining: PUT YOUR FUCKING MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS AND DONATE MORE!!! OR JUST FUCKING DONATE. Because really when it comes down to it, no one cares if the money came from Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt or Praise St. Angie or Princess pea or their fucking mothers. It just has to get there!

And by the way, my man and I donated Wednesday morning and plan to do so again on Friday when we get paid and have more money. And my sisters already donated and most of our friends.

  32. nnn says:

I think it is more obscene for people to criticize about someone who publicize their donation one way o another than to publicized it.

Those in their comfort who are not directly strikken by this tragedy have a lot of nerves to criticize when death strike. It’s easy isn’t it when you are ot directly concern, wjhen you are not the one praing that somene ypu know and who hasn’t given news is still alive.

If it was one of you or a member of your family, trust me, you’ll be thankfull that anyone of that stature talk about it.

It reminded me about 1994 when in college in Brussels during the first days of the Tutsis genocide in April. We were studying while some of my closest Tutsi friends had to endure the first terrible news of most of their relatives gone during the first hours, some without news as the phone were disconnected, unable to concentrate, looking hagard at the TV showing dead bodies, some even screamed recognizing the bodies on the streets, … They were all crying in despair, angered for the silence surrounded that tragedy, the help that didn’t come and would have given their half arm to a celeb to speak, donate and somewhat put pressure on others to do the same and ease their pain.

I think it is quite disgusting, inhuman, heartless, not to mention totally inappropriate that some of you will have the nerve to criticize any doings, let it be talking that lead at saving lifes. But then again if it was yours or one of your relatives in danger, you would not bitch about it n the first place.

  33. rosalee says:

    @princess pea, my thoughts also,

There are moments where we do not need individuals using tragic circumstances to highlight their generosity. We need information on families/friends, not press releases.

  34. LizzieB says:

Personally, they get on my nerves big time. But I think it’s great if anyone donates to Haiti and good for them for donating so much. Lord knows those baby photos they sold are good for something!

  35. tfb says:

I’m sick of reading comments from firestarter, especially ones in defense of walmart. A multi-billion dollar corporation that refuses benefits for its retail workers, forces its manufacturors to constantly lower prices which either puts them out of business for forces them to turn to cheap labor (read: children, foreign labor sweatshops) and has put the Walton family at the top of the Forbes 500 richest lists for many years in a row. All they can give is 500,000? That’s more offensive. F-ck Walmat. Its the downfall of a decent society. Firestarter, I don’t care to read any stupid comeback you will write. I don’t have time to post all day, while you obviously have unlimited time in ur stupid walmart pajamas.enjoy them. Peace out.

  36. MsTriste says:

Ever notice that Tom Cruise NEVER donates a penny to anything? Maybe Brad and Angelina announce their donations in an attempt to encourage other celebrities to do the same thing.

I would love to have so much money that I could be a philanthropist – how rewarding would that be.

  37. jen says:

I don’t think anyone is using tragic circumstances to highlight their generosity. They’re simply encouraging others to help as much as they can. But it doesn’t matter – Brangelina could give every penny they have & people would still bitch about it. Too bad you can’t put some of that energy to better use.

  38. BitterBetty says:

In case some of you are lost – this is a celebrity site not the CNN massage boards. if you believe celebrity commentary does not coincide with people’s efforts to help during a humanitarian crisis you should probably stop visiting this site altogether.

  39. Mimi says:

Again it’s amaze me me the enormous hate that some of u have for this 2 and don’t come up with that BULLSHIT about “we have the RIGHT to NOT like THEN for any reason… this is bull and u all know that u don’t liking their acting would NEVER make u all still in this tragedy come up with excuses to disses then because their are DONATING 1 MILLION to an organization that is coming to this DEVASTATED country to try to help… WHY u all are not Criticizing other’s countries that donated how about criticize England that are donating 6 MILLION or German for donating 1.5 million or Brazil for sending fireman’s doctors nurses and a hospital temporary, how about criticize the many Americans that send over 2 million in 24 hours the list can go on and on if u all want to criticize why not all of then all this donations are becoming NEWS how “dare” then donate and earn free publicity by doing so … It’s always amazing to me how people can say so much foolishness and stupid… And come on still the complain about baby photos how about thinking that all this money could have being going to a single person like u that probably wouldn’t give A SHITTY about the situation and wouldn’t donating neither ur time and specially ur money.
U people couldn’t see a good deed in front of u even if ur life dependent on it.

In case some of you are lost…TOO if people don’t call it all of u guys out on ur bullshit on the net we only would read awful comments about people doing good or just trying to live their life without prejudging nobody and we also wouldn’t have the desire to share or experiences because we all would be afraid that ONLY foolish people would respond and acted like a moron.

  40. Praise St. Angie! says:

“I’m sick of reading comments from firestarter”

I have a REALLY simple solution for that.

    STOP READING THEM.

  41. jen says:

    Mimi – um, what…? 😛

  42. Goddess711 says:

The 22nd is eons away. It must feel like the world doesn’t give a flying f**k to the Haitians right now.
It’s hard to take anyone’s rant who uses “u” in the rant.

  43. Firestarter says:

tfb- Uh I wasn’t defending Wal-Mart, I simply said that it was $500k that wasn’t there before.

Sorry you don’t like my comments. perhaps you shouldn’t read them. Skip over them. Pretty easy fix for that!

Does anyone use that phrase “Peace out” anymore? Oh yeah, one person!

  44. Dan says:

to be honest i think they anounced it because if they didnt someone else from the paparazzi may have and then it would have been about them and not the actual incident. the fact they draw attention to the aftermath and talk about homelessness/displacement draws attention to whats happening there. i do feel a lot of celebs do play the charity game but i dont think these 2 do, but thats just my opinion.

  45. hatsumomo says:

Yeah firestarter, I agree. Any money is better than no money, but if you put the amounts me and my man donated and our yearly income in ratio to what Wal-Mart donated and its yearly gross profits, technically we donated more than Wal-Mart. Even if it wasn’t a half million. Its kinda weird.

And to Venus and BitterBetty, I donated and let the whole world know by telling y’all. Does this mean my heart isnt in the right place and I have a messiah complex too?

  46. Tazina says:

Angie and Brad did not necessarily themselves announce their donation to Haiti. But if they did, it is to spur others to give also. Knowing what Brad and Angie have done for this cause inspires others to do the same. Don’t be so quick to judge that which you know nothing about.

  47. tfb says:

Gee praise, you are so original, a real nuanced thinker… If firestarter didn’t post multiple comments under every single story on celebitchy it would be possible to avoid his stupid comments. Maybe the two of you can go frolich in the nasty sale bins of walmart while bitching that brad and angelina suck sooo much, how cheap of them to only give a million and then make an announcement about it. How gauche.Guess what- They’re better people than either of you, who prove with ur comments to be petty, small minded and pathetic. Keep patronizing walmart. Your amongst your brethern there.

  48. jen says:

Yowza… O_O *tiptoes out of thread* XD

  49. Praise St. Angie! says:

“If firestarter didn’t post multiple comments under every single story on celebitchy it would be possible to avoid his stupid comments.”

actually, there’s another way to avoid them.

each person’s name is just to the left of the post. if it says “Firestarter” and has a pic of the CUTEST KITTY EVAH!, don’t read it.

and you shouldn’t put down walmart (or stores like it, anyway). not everybody is able to shop at more expensive stores. seriously, what a snob you are.

  50. princess pea says:

See, this is one reason why I think it’s a little uncool to go throwing the $ amounts donated around. Because if you start shaming people/organizations for not donating “enough,” that’s somehow going to encourage people to donate? Seems to me like it might actually discourage them, since they’ll just be criticized. Would anyone prefer it if Walmart had donated 0$?

  51. lucy2 says:

The 22nd does seem pretty far away during such an immediate crisis, but I guess it’s the logistics of coordinating a bunch of networks and all of that stuff. Maybe one good thing about it is that right now there are probably a lot of donations coming in, but by the 22nd that will probably have slowed down. Maybe they’ll catch repeat donators, or those who meant to but never did? I don’t know. The past fundraisers seem like they did pretty well, hopefully this one will too.

  52. Kaiser says:

    *whistles by the thread*

Okay, people, just take one giant step back, everyone. I’m not choosing sides but everyone needs to take it down a notch, mmmkay?

    *shakes head*

    Jesus.

  53. dee says:

People are forgetting that Angelina is a UNHCR Ambassador for refugees. It is her job to speak out on these types of disasters. If she stayed silent like many of you want her to, then she wouldn’t be fulfilling her obligations. Since the money they donated is through their organizations, it makes sense for both of them to give a statement. Angelina has been involved with Wyclef’s charity Yele Haiti for many years. She may know some people in the country or maybe she’s trying to reach out to Wyclef to let him know she’s there to support him in his efforts.

  54. Kim says:

AJ is on the board of Yele Haiti.People on some Haiti related sites are thanking them for their help like Haiti News

  55. WTF?!? says:

    @Kiki:
“I think it’s better to announce how much you are donating (especially when it’s a big figure),so that the people who are affected by this tragedy know that there are celebrities/politicians/organizations helping out.”

The Haitian people most likely have no idea who our politicians and celebrities are. The dollar figure is likely lost on them, too, since it’s a different currency.

The people of Haiti need *help*, they know it by the supplies and assistance that actually show up, not through a statement from some golden couple with more money than their entire citizenry earns in a decade announcing they gave a million dollars.

  56. Anaïs says:

I’m so sorry I don’t speak english that well, and I cannot express very well what I want to say, but you make me so angry that I will try.

You are really obsessed with Brad and Angie, if your world wasn’t so limited by hating people you don’t even know. You would understand that the real matter here are haitian people, no matter who help, how and why.

This is one of the bigger disaster of the history, and you are complaining about how two people express their feeling?????????????? Being a celebrity remove you the right to express your feeling????????????
A lot of other celebrity did it:
    Jessica Alba
    Ben Stiller
    Nicole Richie
    Alyson Hannigan

The real question is why you only hear about Brad and Angelina?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That simply because You ADORE to bitch about these two, newspapers know it, so they give you your favorite food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brad and Angelina didn’t reveal how much they give, they said this:

-“We are devastated by the news from Haiti. We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter.”

-“It is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades.”

-“We understand the first response is critical to serve the immediate needs of countless people who are now displaced from their homes, are suffering trauma, and most require urgent care.”

Knowing that Angelina is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations, I really don’t get what is SO WRONG with what they said or did, I guess I’m a idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. Sumodo says:

    I can’t believe the arguing.

  58. BitterBetty says:

The shock and horror got the best of us. I forgive you all.

  59. Kiki says:

    Hey, I like Firestarter’s comments!

(well, except when I’m called out for my Speidi obsession) Ha!

  60. lisa says:

I thought the announcement was made by Doctors Without Boarders.. the statement Angelina made using WE was in reference to the fact that it was a statement from both she and Brad.. I don’t understand that. Lance denoted for himself.. (1). They did this together.. thus the WE.. I use the We term when ever I refer to myself or boyfriend. If I was married I would do so then too.
But hey.. Some people can’t just say it was a great thing to do.. they have to throw the “but” which negates all that came before.

They have supported Wyclef Jean before. letting his organization sell the first pics of Angie when she was pregnant. they got almost a quarter of a million dollars for those pictures. I admire anyone who gives. It is not required that they do so. They have done this many time. and I am sure the people in Haiti who will benefit.. don’t give a damn that the statement released buy DWB has the word WE in it..

And Bravo to Tiger too and all the others that have stepped forward so quickly.. Time is of the essence..

And I am so proud of out Country for acting so quickly. PLUS how awesome the everyday man and woman have been.. donating what they can.. just awesome..

  61. lucy2 says:

Looks like donations are booming all around. Canadian Red Cross already raised $3 mil, and the Red Cross $10 text donations are already over $4 mil, lots of other countries pledging help as well.
Pretty interesting to see how technology like cell phones and social networking sites got it all going so fast. Much different than the old days of writing and mailing a check.

  62. Bek says:

Holy sh!t. I’ve never seen so many people yelling at each other. I’m sure whoever is using that million dollars is quite appreciative of it. Who actually knows Brangie’s political or personal intentions? ITS A MILLION DOLLARS OF RELIEF. Who cares why right now? Wanna know another human tragedy apart from what’s happening in Haiti? Umm…the sheer hate that blog posters project on other posters. How exactly does that help the world? Just saying. None of you know each other and none of you know the Brange. Just thought maybe some of you needed a reminder. Not to sound moronic, but, “can’t we all just get along?” Love to all of you and best wishes to those suffering.

  63. corine says:

HOW DARE Angelina donate 10 yrs worth of her time and millions of dollars to charity? How DARE she!? She’s an attention-whore, slag, b*tch!!!

These ppl think they know her personally. It’s so ridiculous that I just have to laugh. I can’t imagine what these people are like in real life–shudders at the thought.

  64. V says:

    why the brangelina-hate, people ?
for all you jennifer aniston lovers out there, let’s see if even flips her hair in response to the earthquake …

  65. tess says:

angelina jolie seems to donate a fair chunk of change to charity. unlike other celebrities who just sing or attend fundraisers, she also writes cheques. good for her. (and for brad pitt).

they really make a difference and i think encourage others to follow suit.

  66. hmm says:

The bottom line is that it was a generous donation and perhaps it will spur others to be equally generous. I have worked in nonprofits and trust me that you want people to publicize and announce their gifts because that brings more money and attention to your organization/cause. BTW, if they hadn’t donated or announced those same people would have been bitching about that. I still can’t believe that five years later people are still butthurt about someone else’s divorce.

  67. Goddess711 says:

    Firestarter’s a guy?????? 😉

And yes, we’re all here to bitch because that’s what the site is for. Pure entertainment. Get over it or…don’t.

A sense some Brangelina Haitian Adoptions coming up.

Is anybody else antsy about donating to the Red Cross after all the donations that were supposed to go to 9/11 victims & families DIDN’T?

  68. Solveig says:

Don’t want to sound mean (gross) but 100,000 victims and we’re arguing about two idiots whose money usually cleans their golden a**es each and every day, really?
They donate? Fine, Haitians need that money, but frankly to make a statement to say that you’re donating sounds tasteless and classless. No matter who’s doing it, there’s no need to inform the world about your good deeds. Just spread the word making aware about the necessity of help and money, that’s enough.
And with all the due respect to celebitchy’s writers, this is a rag site and IMO it’s not the right place to discuss about such a tragedy.
Ok, now I’d better go to my beloved Johnny’s thread.

  69. Ron says:

Celebrities release press statements about donations etc to garner more press for relief effeorts it’s not to so they personally can receive kudos. Also, Wal-Mart donates 500,000 and they are idiots yet no one mentions big oil which in the past few years have made more profits in one business quarter than Wal-Mart makes in a year. Wal-Mart is such as easy “evil empire” icon. Any dontation, from any person, for any reason is a worthwhile contribution. As a CA resident I am aware of the fear and suffering that comes from earthquakes and my thoughts and prayers are with Haiti in it’s hour of need.

  70. Solveig says:

    edit: “tactless” not “tasteless”.

  71. teri says:

Angelina and Brad have been apart of Haiti for several years making great friends along the way. How dare any of you question their sincerity. We need more loving people who are very generious like the JP who set a great example.

  72. Camille says:

@hmm: Well said hmm, well said. I couldn’t agree with you more.
Its ridiculous the amount of hate. Get over it people.

  73. crazydaisy says:

celebrities are under no obligation to share their wealth. brad and angie feel it is their duty to give back, and they give, often. this is honorable.

whoever donates towards the haiti tragedy is a good person. however much doesn’t really matter. if you are rich, you can afford to give more, that’s all.

it’s not wrong to go public with your donations. it inspires others to give, also. b & a have a ton of loot, and they aren’t penny pinchers when a need is there. they can’t save the world, but they can save some lives through their generosity. a million bucks is quite a lot of money, folks, and will go a long way to help. THAT’S WHAT MATTERS.

    12. Alice Walton $17.6B
    13. Christy Walton $17.6B
    14. S. Robson Walton $17.6B

One would think they could donate more than $500K.

I think the point of this post is to get people to donate a little.

AJ always donates her money and time to a lot of wordly causes and that’s why she is who she is hate her or not it’s true. Let’s not forget that BP also has donated a lot to the city of New Orleans

I am from Miami where you’ll find the largest Haitian population in this country. A friend of mine is waiting word from her mother who had just traveled there because she had a business there and another one has two cousins that are missing. So even if you hate them so much as so many of you do here, at least acknowledge the good humanitarian work both do

  77. Whilst what has happened in Haiti is appalling and horrific for the people there, would I be too cynical to think that this is a prime opportunity for George’s “no campaigning” campaign to get more attention as we head into the countdown to the Oscars? He has turned up to every award show & festival that will have him, paraded a new girlfriend for months to obtain further media coverage and now that the Oscar nomination is within his grasp, saint George is putting together a telethon. God bless him. Not to be a stickler but people, he isn’t doing it – a charity is putting on the telethon. George is just selling himself as the face of it. Because his ego is so massive that he truly believes that everyone else in the world is sitting on their hands waiting until he steps up and tells us all how to respond. Maybe he will even drag out his UN appointment to give himself a bit more gravitas about the situation. The UN appointment that only gets an airing when he has a film to sell. He stated after the 9/11 telethon and the ensuing drama with O’Reilly with donations being cancelled that he wouldn’t be the organiser of a telethon (if he was then) ever again as he got attacked for it. He do state he would participate and help in any way that he could though.
Telethon – great idea. Clooney being made into the public face of it – not so much. And seriously, do the twenty somethings even know who he is?
Also, let’s hope the charity taking the donations give 100% of the money donated to the cause and not take a percentage to cover their administrative costs like a number of charities do.

  78. Beth says:

I always get a little chuckle when reading Brad/Angelina stories. The haters, Jenfans, etc love to call all fans of Brad and Angelina psycho but they are the ones who go crazy and get hypocritical over the smallest things. I’m baffled why they are so angry about their statement. Brad and Angelina only said they were upset about the situation in Haiti and that they going to help. A lot of celebrities said the same thing but for some reason only Brad and Angelina are getting this hate.

  79. SisterAgnes says:

In the light of the unimaginable disaster that has occured in Haiti, how some people can still find the negativity within themselves to criticise someone else’s generosity is mind-boggling. What on earth is so wrong about releasing a statement about why they’ve responded to the horrors that have unfolded before our very eyes?

I’m fairly sure the people who have lost loved ones, their homes, have no food or water or shelter don’t give a rat’s ass why someone has donated money to help them. Some of us who will probably never experience this kind of catastrophe could do well to remember that, instead of expressing “discomfort” at a press statement. Ridiculous.

The point that other people are making that you either aren’t reading or paying attention to is that it is the WAY THEY WORDED their statement that is bothering people.

All of their statements have something to do with how they are doing something but nothing to do with how others can help or that others can help at all.

Beside that, you can care about the Haitians and be annoyed with Brangelina’s statements as well. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

    Brad Grey owns Paramount/MTV/Showtime

    MTV is producing the Telethon

Paramount owns the Clooney movie Up In The Air

If the ones who are saying that we are criticizing and hating on them don’t understand what you’re saying with your comment, I really don’t think that we can hope that the message can pass through and be caught in other ways and words.

It isn’t about them donating and all of you know that.

You’re right, I DO know that. It’s about the fact that this couple can’t do anything without being scrutinized. Angelina can’t do a thing without people questioning her motives and calling her a homewrecking whore. If this was anyone else donating this money few would blink an eye. Yet you question the WORDING of their press release? It seriously all comes down to SEMANTICS with you? REALLY? Talk about not getting the message through. You accuse others of only reading/seeing what they want to but you’re doing THE EXACT SAME THING. I know you’ll accuse me of not getting it or something, and that’s cool. But I’d put your “I’m better than everyone here” attitude aside and maybe take your own advice, “sage”.

  94. SageAdvice says:

I’m not a “Jenretard”. Nor do I think that any of us who had a problem with the way they worded their statement had a problem with it because “we” meant her and Brad.

Keep thinking that, it’ll allow you to sleep at night and still hate on a woman who did nothing but file for divorce.

And I said, twice, that I had no problem with them donating and actually said that it was a good thing if they had announced that they were donating however much because it would influence other celebs to do so.

Anyway, I’m not coming down on Clooney because he hasn’t actually released a statement to the press. One of his reps said that he’s holding a telethon for Haiti relief but nothing beyond that. Which, to me, would indicate that he’s holding something that would allow others to help and to donate, he’s just become one of the avenues through which you can help.

This is Brangelina’s statement: We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter.

Nothing about how others can help. Are you understanding now? They basically released a statement that said “Leave it to us and our celebrity friend, we’ve got this”.

  95. Rose says:

“Nothing about how others can help. Are you understanding now? They basically released a statement that said “Leave it to us and our celebrity friend, we’ve got this”. ”

Their statement does not read like that to any fair-minded person. If they had called on others to help doubtless people would be on whinging about ‘who do they think they are telling people to help.’

  96. Josephina says:

    WTF?!?

1.5 Million people are homeless in Haiti and over 50,000 people are dead… and counting. There are people in Haiti who do know who Angelina is, if not through Wyclef Jean. Angelinan Jolie’s name is well known, just like Michael Jackson, because of her humanitarian activities, throughout the world and also known through most of the minority communities. This is just a simple fact at this point.

She puts her celebrity status to very good use. It is a shame that you cannot see the bigger picture and you find her efforts “annoying.” The more visible she is, the more people respond to help. That is the impact she and Brad have. People like them and they do have influence on others to do good.

May God continue to bless the Jolie Pitts as they continue to help those in need.

  97. SageAdvice says:

No they would not. Other people have released statements about how much they donated and where they could donate to and no one else has said a word about it.

Is it just because it’s these two chuckleheads? Who knows. But it would irk me in the same way if Halle Berry had released a narcissistic statement like that.

  98. Josephina says:

    Sageadvice

Do you know who Wyclef Jean is? There are sites that have also referenced this Haitian-born singer and human rights activist and how he has asked for assistance. He has a foundation that directly aids the people of Haiti. You can easily google to get the information. His information is all over Facebook as well.

The Larry King Show on CNN has listed a number of agencies that you can choose to donate your money, if you choose to do so. In fact, just about every major news source that has a website has mentioned organizations that are helping.

Brad and Angelina actually walk the walk. They have developed a solid, unbreakable reputation based on their work (not as actors) and their continued motivation to help underprivileged and disadvantaged people.

There are so many other celebrities that are coming forward as well and offering their help. If you look at CNN, you will see that many will die before the night is over due to lack of resources and aid. Poor security hinders the aid workers to be effective. As a result, many will die senseless deaths due to inadequate care. And some here will express disgust over not getting a direct quote from Angie as to where to donate where she is donating.

  99. Cheyenne says:

Jesus Christ, does it matter who gave how much or why? Every contribution is desperately needed.

If nobody but Pitt and Jolie made their donation public, why do we know the names of so many who donated and how much they gave?

Everybody needs to mind their own damn business. And yes, I already donated on the Doctors Without Borders website.

  100. Josephina says:

    Good morning all.

According to FoxNews, it has been estimated that over 200,000 people are feared dead. Please…everyone… donate what you can. This is indeed a human crisis. My heart is breaking. We live in a very privileged, fortunate environment and Haiti is quite close to the U.S.

Can you imagine having your leg amputated with only local anesthesia? That means you will feel the pain and will suffer for hours…most likely go into shock…if you do not die it would be by the grace of God. It is 90 degrees and victims are lying in the street with open wounds and with missing or torn limbs. Most of the wounded have not reached the makeshift health centers. If you do not want to give money, I ask you to pray for the people of Haiti and for the courageous people who are flying in to offer their help.

My heart also goes out to the residents here in the U.S. who have loved ones in Haiti. If you have lost someone in Haiti from this horrible natural disaster, my prayer is for you. If you are still looking and still hoping, just keep praying and do not give up hope.

There exists an urgent and critical need for additional medical care. We are sending a makeshift self-contained hospital euqipped with 500 soldiers, doctors and nurses on a ship. It should arrive as early as next week. Unfortunately, by that time, as many as 300,000 could be dead.

It is 90 degrees there and CNN has reported a shortage of water as well. This is truly an epidemic.

  101. Elizabeth says:

Come on Brad & Angie yous spend that much on a painting, open up your wallets!!!

  102. kim says:

They donated the money to Doctors w/out Borders. Why not pay attention to the statement related to Doctors W/o Borders donation not the statement the day before about them supporting Wyclef and Yele. Did you criticize Sandra Bullock statement after she donated to DWOB

  103. lisa says:

Brad and Angelina did not make their statement to the public. They made the statement to the organization they donated to. So there was no need for a public plea. They were speaking to DWB.. not the public. Every person in this country/world with a TV knows about what has happened to Haiti. Some people will donate and others will not. Some will find reasons to criticize those who in their minds have not given enough. Angie/Brad support many, many organizations. Giving a great deal of money. So Elizabeth.. how ever much they give is appreciated. because They nor anyone is required to give anything.

And yes some people who don’t like them get pissed every time either of them says “WE”.. just like some of them made a stink on this site when The Pitt family made a donation and did not say Angie’s name.. WTF..

I think it is awesome that people care enough to do something. Brad/Angie followed their conscious.. They did not need anyone to tell them to give.. why do others not follow suit. If you are going to give.. GIVE.. you don’t need to wait to be asked.

  104. corine says:

“Sage advice”? What a ridiculous name–you don’t know them well enough to make any of the claims you are making. Why don’t you do something better w/your time than nitpicking someone trying to do something decent?

  105. Firestarter says:

Isn’t it a little petty to pick on people’s screen names?

Look, let’s just agree that any help is good help, no matter how much, from where it came, and how it was announced.

We all have different opinions and we are entitled to express them. The bottom line- any money is help and that is what is needed at this point, help, in any denomination and from any place.

  106. WTF?!? says:

Josephina, you live in a fantasy world if you think the majority (or even the minority) of the poorest nation in the western hemisphere knows who Angelina Jolie is. Hollywood types don’t all hang out together just because they are grouped in a gossip site article, and so the idea that the Haitian people magically know of her existence on the planet because Wyclef Jean is from there is a ridiculous notion.

For people who want to help, here are a few other ways you can:

To help the earthquake victims in Haiti (Snopes-confirmed): Text the word “HAITI”:

    * to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross

    * to 20222 to donate $10 to the Clinton Foundation Haiti Relief Fund

    * to 25383 to donate $5 to the International Rescue Committee

    * to 85944 to donate $10 to the International Medical Corps.

The charge will be placed on your phone bill.

  107. corine says:

Stop lecturing others, Firestarter. Picking on someone’s screen name is just as petty as Sage Advice picking on Brangelina for using the word “we”. How dare they donate $ and release a statement saying we? Petty people beget petty responses.

  108. Firestarter says:

@Corine- It wasn’t a lecture, it was a comment. Simple as that.

  109. lennie says:

Wait a minute people, they donate to Haiti and they didn’t take a single penny from you. Those who will benefit from their help will be grateful that somebody actually DID something for them instead of whinning behind their computers! I’m French and we have a saying who tells that “whinners are the ones who really don’t DO anything”.

So what if they started by “WE”? We means “Brad and Ange”. “WE are devastated by the news from Haiti…” means that you are not watching the news from CNN to tell what happened out there! They used “WE” because they wanted to include themselves as human beings behind the donation, and not just “take the money!” They have already been there, they know the country, they know some people, and they intend to work with Wyclef Jean again. So excuse me but I really don’t get why you are fighting over the WE which is the most natural word to use. Actually I get it. Just a way to hen and whine the hate all over again. Like Haitians would care about it! Some of you really must have bitter lives.
