Golden Globes wrap-up: winners & losers

The Golden Globes are usually one of the best awards shows because they serve liquor, wine and champagne, and after the first hour, everyone is hammered. Unfortunately for this year, it didn’t seem like that many people wanted to get wasted, but on the plus side, the Hollywood Foreign Press did agree with me on some of the big awards of the night. Here’s the list of some of the big winners of the evening:

Film:
Best Picture- Drama – Avatar
Best Director – James Cameron for Avatar
Best Picture – Comedy/Musical – The Hangover
Animated Film – Up
Actress – Comedy/Musical – Meryl Streep for Julie and Julia
Actor – Comedy/Musical – Robert Downey Jr. for Sherlock Holmes
Actress – Drama – Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side
Actor – Drama – Jeff Bridges
Supporting Actor – Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds
Supporting Actress – Mo’Nique for Precious
Screenplay – Up In the Air

Television:
Best Drama – Mad Men
Best Comedy – Glee
Best Miniseries/TV Movie – Grey Gardens
Actor in a Drama – Michael C. Hall
Actor in a Comedy – Alec Baldwin
Actress in a Drama – Julianna Margulies
Supporting Actress – Chloe Sevigny for Big Love
Supporting Actor – John Lithgow for Dexter
Television Movie – Grey Gardens
Actress in a TV Movie – Drew Barrymore
Actor in a TV Movie – Kevin Bacon

Some of my highlights from the show included Jeff Bridges’ victory and spontaneous standing ovation from his peers, Mo’Nique’s emotional and touching acceptance speech, Michael C. Hall looking strong despite his cancer, and any time the camera panned to any of the following: Jon Hamm, Robert Downey Jr. Colin Farrell, Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner or Meryl Streep, who at one point looked like she was meditating.

So, what do the Globes mean?!? I’m taking this away from the show – the Best Actress and Best Actor Oscars are now Bullock and Bridges’ to lose. I really think the two of them are the frontrunners, and at this point, I think Christoph Waltz is a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actor. He’s charming, by the way. He seems like a real sweetheart, and it’s good to see a relative unknown (like Waltz is in Hollywood) sweep the awards. As for Supporting Actress, I hesitate to say that Mo’Nique is the shoo-in. Yes, she’s picked up several of the big harbinger awards for the Oscars, but Mo’Nique isn’t really adhering to a strong Oscar campaign, and the Academy might look for an excuse not to give her an award. Sure, I definitely think Mo’Nique will get nominated, and she’s probably the front-runner. But will she end up with the award? I’ll have it figured out in another few weeks!

Loved the Globes! I Love that Chloe Sevigny won she is awesome in Big Love.

But I have to say Fergie had some really bad work done. She was very hard to look at when she was talking to Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.

  2. Firestarter says:

Thank God Band of Brothers and Big Love were on last night, because the few times I tuned in, the GG was a boring snooze fest.

  3. MSat says:

I don’t watch “Mad Men,” but I was very pissed that Dexter didn’t win best drama. This season was untouchable.

Glad to see Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow recognized, though.

  4. Jack says:

mo´nique shouldnt win an oscar! the golden globe is enough and it is deserved, but an oscar..come on.
christoph waltz was so cute and lovely and THANKFUL!
i liked robert downey jr´s accepting speech..a breath of fresh air:)

  5. Jazz says:

I’m just happy that RDJ won!

  6. lucy2 says:

I love Mad Men and it was great this season as always, but I have to agree that nothing topped Dexter. Glad to see the two actors win for it, at least.
No huge surprises but also no real disappointments in terms of the winners.

  7. Beth says:

I’m surprised that Avatar did so well and Up In The Air did so poorly. Awards season was supposed to be all George Clooney and UITA but has gone mostly empty handed at GG and Critic Choice Awards. I’m sure George is ticked and will stop his “non-campaign” campaign and really put himself out there. Loved that “Glee” won. It’s a great show. I can’t believe it’s been pulled for “Idol”.

  8. elvisgrace says:

@ Dorothy: I’m right there with you! Chloe is such an awesome actress that no matter what Nicki does, I can’t hate her. She’s my favorite character!

  9. dc worker says:

Curious about ‘Blind Side”. Comment on recent Wanda Sykes show (with lots of audience applause) was that this story never happened. No way would a white woman in Texas pick up a black guy at night. Has anyone ever heard from the football player or anyone else substantiate this story?

  10. Firestarter says:

@dc worker- You do realize that Sykes is a comedienne, and that the comment was made during her monologue?

The story is about Michel Oher, who not only went on to college to play football, but also played for the Ravens I believe in the NFL.

  11. Mairead says:

I thought Clooney was better in “The Men Who Stare At Goats” (TMWSAG) than UITA, one of his best performances frankly, and a joy to watch.

But I am glad to see Jeff Bridges being lauded; he’s been good in the roles he’s done lately. He was the only watchable thing in “How To Lose Friends & Alienate People” and both he and Kevin Spacey were great in TMWSAG too.

  12. Phowie says:

I can’t believe this is the first time in his career that Jeff Bridges has won something. He has had an incredible career and can do anything, drama or comedy.

  13. I’m not very curious about Sandra’s movie…

  14. TaylorB says:

    dc worker,

The story is true, if you get a chance read the biography ‘The Blind Side…’ about Oher it is really very good. From what I understand the Touheys (sp?)unofficially adopted him and consider him a son. Actually, a very touching story. Haven’t seen the movie yet, but the book is quite good.

The only thing that gets me through these tedious award shows is the accompanying Michael K. live drunkblogging. AWESOME! 🙂

That said, Meryl Streep was my favorite winning speech of the night, Drew Barrymore my least favorite.

Sophia Loren was one of the best dressed woman of the night, IMO.

Ricky Gervais was fairly funny, but seemed just as bored as some of us viewers were!

I strongly believe this will be his last time hosting, what with the NBC and Jennifer Aniston jabs and the on air drinking.

  16. kermit says:

Good enough show. Didn’t drag on too long, not a lot of fluff stuff, ended on time. I don’t really care who wins the GG or Oscars, to me it’s more the acknowledgment of the work done by the actor/director or TV/movie contributors. I could care less about the dresses and fashion as well. For me, Monique and Drew Barrymore gave genuine, heartfelt speeches that felt “grateful”. Streep’s was also very well done. Good to see Robert Downey Jr. come back and be awarded for his fine work.

  17. Solveig says:

Hope that the Golden globe given to Robert Downey Jr means that he can have more chances to win another Oscar. I really like him.
    What’s wrong with Meryl’s eyes/make up?

  18. julie says:

regarding the blind side, it is indeed a true story and michael oher is a rookie playing for the baltimore ravens. he has spoken many times about how grateful he is for the opportunity he was given and refers to mrs. touhey as mom.

  19. Firestarter says:

@Kermit- Didn’t drag on too long? It dragged on longer than a dog dragging it’s ass on a carpet, which in any case is too long.

  20. juiceinla says:

I always consider the globes the runner up award for those who are not getting an oscar. Always seems like whoever gets a globe, isn’t getting an Oscar.

I also love how the media always prefaces introductions to the Globes as “a great indicator of who will win the oscar”.
Its not a lie, if you mean, a globe winner wont be an Oscar winner.

  21. ol cranky says:

what was the deal with James Cameron’s finger while giving his acceptance speech. the way he didn’t stop playing around with his award and the ballot until you could easily see his middle finger makes me wonder if that was intentional

  22. asiont says:

michel c. hall was my favourite and I’m happy he finally got the globe after 4 nominations.
also john lithgow’s preformance in the dexter’s last season was just brilliant so he also deserved to win.

  23. NunyaBiz says:

    Firestarter….LMFAO thank you.

  24. Allie says:

I’m glad Kevin Bacon finally won something! He’s always so overlooked, he’s a great actor.

And someone please explain this to me? I thought the nominees, were from this past year….so how can Stanley Tucci get a nomination for “The Lovely Bones,” when it just opened this past Friday? TIA.

  25. Firestarter says:

@Allie- Lovely Bones opened in limited release back in December. Also it isn’t the public who nominates the actors, it is the press who see the movies before the general public ever sees them. Studios send out packets to critics, etc of the movies, actors they are trying to push for nominations and wins.
    NunyaBiz- Your welcome! : )

  26. L says:

@allie The Globes have the same rules to qualify as the Academy Awards, in that it has to open in LA county by the end of the previous calendar year. The limited release for the Lovely Bones was Dec 11th (and I’m assuming it played in LA during that time), the nationwide opening was this past weekend.

  27. dizzybenny says:

I think ”Precious” should have won best picture in drama.
I had more emotions watching the first 10 minutes of the movie then watching 2 and half hours of Avatar.
In 10 years from now Avatar will be forgotten. It will not hold the test of time.

  28. Firestarter says:

@dizzybenny- People also said that about Star Wars. Since Avatar is quickly creeping up on Titanic as the all time box office money maker, it won’t be forgotten any time soon. It takes a hell of a movie to make that kind of money at the box office, and both Star Wars and Titanic have never been forgotten, so chances are Avatar won’t be obscure in 10 yrs.

While Precious is a compelling movie (I have read Push, not seen the movie) you have to understand that movies are judged on many things, and not solely on content of story alone. The most emotionally gripping tale does not always get the biggest prize.

  29. ,,,, says:

You left out Best Foreign Language Film which went to ‘The White Ribbon’ and Best Actress in a Comedy – Television which went to Toni Collette for her work in ‘The United States of Tara.’

  30. dizzybenny says:

@Firestarter:i understand what you mean but i’m talking that there is nothing original about that movie(compared to the other 2 mentioned).I was just hoping that if you go and spend 400 million on a movie, creating a new 3d camera in the process that he would have picked a better story.
eventho it WILL be the #1 of all time in box office history wont make it the best movie ever. And in 10 years from now when people will make the top 10 movies of the decade,i wont appear on many lists. If it does it will be because of the CGIs not for the movie itself.
