Gabriel Byrne admits he was sexually abused as a kid

Here’s an actor who doesn’t get enough love from any of us (including me): Gabriel Byrne. I love this man. I think he’s so very talented, so very handsome, and his voice is basically one of the biggest panty-droppers ever. When I was about 16 years old, I think I must have watched The Usual Suspects every other day for a year, I loved that movie and Gabriel so much. So, so lovely.

Anyway, Byrne was being interviewed on an Irish television show, and he dropped a bomb: he was sexually abused as a child while in seminary school in Ireland. Byrne doesn’t say the words “a priest abused me” but that’s the subtext. Apparently, Byrne was planning to become a priest, and he was enrolled in a seminary school at the age of 11. He made it through 4 and a half years there, then quit when he became interested in girls. Byrne doesn’t go into detail about what was done to him or exactly what age it happened, but it does sound like something he’s still learning how to deal with:

Gabriel Byrne revealed to an Irish television show that he was molested when he was 11 years old. Byrne, who plays a therapist on “In Treatment” and starred in films like “The Usual Suspects” and “Stigmata” told of his years as an altar boy and in a Christian Brothers school on the show “The Meaning of Life.”

Byrne, 59, went to seminary at age 11 to begin studying to be a priest, and he lasted 4 1/2 years.

“Unfortunately, I experienced some sexual abuse,” he said. “It was a known and admitted fact of life amongst us that there was this particular man, and you didn’t want to be left in the dressing room with him. There were certain boundaries, sexual boundaries, that were crossed… I didn’t feel that i suffered at the time.. It took many years to come to terms with it and to forgive those incidents that I felt had deeply hurt me.”

“Again, I didn’t think it severely impacted me at the time. But I suppose when I think about my later life, and how I had difficulties with certain issues, there is the real possibility they could have been attributable to that.”

He later talked about his own battle with alcoholism.

He also said while, “I was beaten very regularly,” he has never laid a hand on his two children, whom he had with ex-wife Ellen Barkin.

He left the seminary when he discovered women and felt more excitement for the female form than he ever had for the priesthood. Byrne joined an acting group, he said, for the girls.

[From The Huffington Post]

He just sounds like a nice guy, doesn’t he? True, I have no idea what he’s really like. From what little I do know about him, he seems to have a great work ethic, he is beloved by the acting community, and he’s generally considered to be one of the most underrated actors working today. I had no idea about all of this personal stuff – the alcoholism, the sexual abuse, the physical abuse. Poor guy. He has his demons, but it sounds like he’s trying to find a way to say that the stuff that happened to him when he was a kid contributed to his problems as an adult, all while taking responsibility for all of it.

Meanwhile, Byrne received much critical acclaim for the first two seasons of HBO’s In Treatment, where Byrne plays a psychotherapist. The show was picked up for a third season last fall, and Byrne is probably going to begin filming any day now. Good for him!

Oh WOW! He looks so different. I used to think he was soooooooo incredibly handsome. Not Hot. Not a bot-toy. but just drop dead handsome! I haven’t heard about him in a LOOOOng time. He’s beginning to look a little Gary Busey here though, no?

  2. bo says:

YES. Yes to what Kaiser said about him. he has always been in my top tier of Hollywood men. He was in the “Older” category, which is the most esteemed of all my categories. I think the panty-dropper line is spot-on.

  3. Sumodo says:

Gabriel Byrne cleans up real good. That’s just not a good photo, though he could use an eye lift.

  4. gloaming says:

It’s admirable of him to speak openly about this.
I love him even more now!

  5. Tess says:

Sizzling chemistry between Byrne and Bridget Fonda in “Point of No Return”…

    It made the movie.

  6. Dorothy says:

How sad. I hate when I hear these stories, they make me sick. how can a supposed “man of God” do these things? Aren’t they supposed to be better than us? Reason number 204 why I dislike religion.

Anyhoodle I do love religious horror movies and Sitgmata is fantastic!!! If you haven’t seen it go rent it now!!!!

  7. LolaBella says:

@Dorothy: Stigmata is one of my favorite movies and he was so hot in it! Although, it made me feel kind of naughty for saying he was sexy…since you know..he was playing a priest. LOL.

  8. mdf says:

He was sooo damn sexy in Stigmata!

  9. bigelle says:

Oh how very sad and appalling. On a positive note he’s still a gorgeous man with a twinkle in his eye. But why oh why did you choose a pic of him looking pasty with a cold-sore?

  10. Tazina says:

Although humans always have one eye larger than the other, this does look a little extreme. He is a fine actor and I hope he has conquered his demons. How many lives have Priests ruined I wonder?

  11. Zoe says:

This is old news, Gabriel Byrne admitted he was abused by priests years ago. Interesting fact: Liam Neeson went to the same school. Eek.

  12. Mairead says:

Just to clarify something – from the Irish Independent article from the beginning of the week states that it was a seminary in Britain:

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/sex-abuse-hurt-me-deeply-says-actor-byrne-2018300.html

He was interviewed by veteran host Gay Byrne (no, that’s his real name) was a on a new programme “The Meaning of Life”. If you live in Ireland, you will likely be able to see it though the RTE website player.

Otherwise, it is likely that the RTE YouTube channel will have snippets from the interview shortly (I can’t access youtube at the moment)

  13. Mairead says:

Zoe, I didn’t realise that Liam Neeson also trained in a seminary! Or do you mean he also went to a Christian Brothers School?

  14. Mackenzie says:

I just absolutely love “In Treatment.” It’s one of my favorite shows, and GB is awesome in it. Give him an Emmy!

  15. Shannon says:

Unfortunately this isn’t surprising. The level of abuse at the hands of the clergy in Ireland is even worse than the stories that came to light here in the US. I feel so bad for all of the victims 🙁

  16. Mairead says:

The interview mentioned in the article has been uploaded onto YouTube for anyone who’s interested. I’ve watched part 1. It turns out that the news article was incorrect, he indicates that he was both physically and sexually abused in school here in Drimnagh and in the English seminary:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klTcuuhi28Y

The above is just part 1 of 3. This person has put it up all three sections – fair play to him.

Just to follow on from Zoe’s point, she’s right. I hadn’t heard it before, probably because it was lost in all the stories that have been revealed. Gabriel spoke obliquely about it last year on The Late Late Show

(not a very good copy I’m afraid:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezCkxINtzpg
But it was lost in the media here because it was just a week or so after the Ryan Report on Clerical Abuse in the Dublin Diocese (a huge tome just on one diocese alone!)

  17. bo says:

    ::puts Stigmata on Netflix::
    ::orders booze and chocolates::

  18. Dorothy says:

    lol bo

  19. Really says:

Mackenzie- I completely agree! I am addicted to In Treatment, so happy to hear he is going to have a third season! I want Sophie to come back.

  20. canadianchick says:

    Lol Bo 🙂

Good for him for speaking openly about it-it will help other men and boys who’ve been abused to break their silence.

Not a great photo but yes he’s a pantydropper-thankfully he left seminary, *womenkind cheering loudly*

  21. Blitz says:

I read an interview a few years ago (not taped to my knowledge) where he says explicitly he was sexually abused by a priest. He even phoned him many years later and threw it in his face.

Here’s one article from 2008 but there’s at least one other.
“The actor claimed he suffered physical, sexual and emotional abuse by priests between the ages of eight and 11.”

  22. gg says:

I get him and Alfred Molina confused a lot.

  23. Enonymous says:

I like him, he is a good actor. He has openly talked about his abused childhood but I did not know he was/is also an alcoholic, that is such a shame.

  24. NicoleAM says:

Couldn’t agree more about his voice! He’s my George Clooney. I loved him in the Usual Suspects and Point of No Return. Wish he was on the big screen more.

  25. Jen says:

I met him in my small Irish town a few years ago – he walked past the hairdressers I was in and the stylist chased him down the street so he came in to sign autographs and pose for pictures.
*Sigh* panty dropper doesn’t even describe it 🙂

  26. Mairead says:

Confusing Gabriel with the equally-talented Alfred? I worry about you sometimes gg 😆

  27. Raven says:

I’m really sad to read about his abuse. It quite likely led to his alcoholism. I’ve worked with families of teens abused by priests. It’s frustrating that these men continue to get by with this and the church shields them directly or indirectly.
