Remember when Joaquin Phoenix began to go “crazy” and we all sat around trying to figure out if he was genuinely insane, or if all of this was some kind of dumb performance art? What did we eventually settle on? A little from column A, a little from Column B? At first, I really thought it was just dumb performance art, and then I started thinking it was insanity, and now I’m back around to performance art. Because it looks like Joaquin quit the crazy, shaved off his mangy beard, cut his hair, took a shower, and is now somewhat back to normal. Of course, Joaquin’s “normal” still might be nutty.
Us Weekly reports that Joaquin appears in a promotional video for his ex-girlfreind Liv Tyler’s charity, To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA), which is a charity devoted to “presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.” Joaquin also did a second video with Miley Cyrus and some other dude (below), and if Joaquin can withstand Miley’s chomping without spontaneously growing another beard and rapping, then it’s safe to say our Joaquin is back! Joaquin is really cute in this video (Miley is not) and I’m remembering my crush on him:
Anyway, remember how all of the insanity was about Joaquin was quiting acting to rap? And Casey Affleck was filming a documentary about the whole experience? Yeah… no word on the documentary, but E! News got an interview with an LA musician named Julian Shah-Taylor, who does not claim to have worked with Joaquin, but does sing Joaquin‘s praises: “He’s a Beatles, Oasis, Bowie-style songwriter. I hold it in that high esteem. He’s accomplished just about everything anyone could accomplish as an artist. So coming out with a brilliant album of great music would not surprise anybody, and I think that’s maybe why he didn’t release it…And I think it’s better to have some secrets, and I think Joaquin’s secret is his prodigious music talent. He’s quite capable of whatever he turns his hand to…Whatever it is, it will be genius, because I think he’s close to genius.” Ugh… whatever.

How crazy! I, too, recorded an album that ranks among Bowie’s finest. And, like Joaquin, I’ve decided NOT to release it so I can keep my masterpiece a special secret between me and any of my friends who are willing to publicly rave about it.

I am a cheerleader for him, he is lovely.
I do thinks he has classic Manic depression Bipolar disorder, sounds like the thinking he was a rapper was one of his manic peaks …. fingers crossed all his meds are sorted and he is back on an even keel.
I suspect though if this is indeed Bipolar his life will be full of peaks and troughs so expect a future instances of being a poet / hermit / politician / recluse / sex addict / mute /circus performer / preacher
I love this guy, he is a great actor and very passionate. I hope he is ok and does some amazing films. I wish he was back with Liv T.They made such an awesome couple.

i actually went back and watched that Letterman interview the other day and it’s so funny when you watch it a few times, there are a lot of subleties…i wish Letterman hadn’t been QUITE as big of a hardliner as he was, cuz i think joaquin was on the line-he was partly offended and then partly kind of going along with it because he KNEW he was nervous and being awkward and he KNOWS he’s not part of mainstream middle america.
i loved it when he took the gum out of his mouth and put it under the desk. BRILLIANT. luv him luv him luv him.

Well to say he looks better than in the movie “I’m still here” isn’t saying much. However he does look rather handsome in the top photo above with the man wearing the tee shirt “To write love.”
On the other hand I’d hate to say this but a neat appearance is in no way proof of his mental state. I certainly am hoping he’s got his act together. By this mean his rational mind back. ]
I like the way he got trimmed ie his beard and got trim, down to a good weight.
