Michael Douglas’ son faces minimum 10 years in prison for drug trafficking

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past premiere held in Los Angeles
Micheal Douglas’ son Cameron, 31, was arrested in late July of last year for dealing methamphetamine at a NY hotel. He was the target of a sting operation by the DEA, and it later came out that he was dealing drugs cross country and shipping them through the mail, a federal offense, with the help of his girlfriend. While Cameron was under house arrest at the $9.25 million upper east side townhouse owned by his mother, Diandra Luker, (Micheal Douglas’ first wife, from 1977-2000 before he married Catherine Zeta-Jones), his girlfriend was busted trying to slip him heroin in the battery compartment of an electric toothbrush. Cameron was then shipped to a Federal prison.

Yesterday Cameron plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute drugs and heroin possession as part of a plea deal. He faces a minimum of 10 years in jail. Cameron’s dad Michael Douglas released a statement last year that the family was “devastated and very disappointed in Cameron’s recent behavior.” He said a little more in a recent interview published in AARP Magazine, as E! Online reports:

Michael’s eldest son, Cameron Douglas.. this morning pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute drugs and heroin possession as part of a plea deal which nevertheless guarantees a minimum—minimum—10-year prison term.

The 31-year-old admitted to selling large quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine prior to his arrest last year, which was preceded by a three-year investigation by the DEA.

“I began supplying on a regular basis,” Douglas said in court.

In addition to the conspiracy charge, he also fessed up to possessing heroin. That count came about after his girlfriend was caught trying to smuggle the drug to him via an electric toothbrush while he was under house arrest last summer.

“Yes, your honor,” he told the judge when asked if he knew what he was doing was wrong.
As for what his famous father feels about his possible life sentence, Michael opened up to the AARP earlier this month.

“It’s been very painful,” he said, going on to acknowledge that he wasn’t exactly a rock-solid presence in his son’s life growing up.

“I’ll assume whatever responsibilities I have to. Would it have been better to have been around more? Absolutely. There were absences, and I was no angel.

“Cameron has a lot of his life ahead,” he says. “He now recognizes his own demons and struggles.”

[From E! Online]

Star Magazine reported that Cameron Douglas had an $80 million trust fund, but who knows how accurate that is. Clearly he had a very privileged upbringing and a lot of chances in life and now he’s squandered it all away. It’s possible Cameron won’t serve the minimum of ten years in prison. E! Online notes that “As details of Cameron’s plea bargain with prosecutors have not been disclosed, it’s unclear whether he will be held to the usual decade-minimum incarceration.” Sentencing is on April 27.

If he serves less than other people for this crime, it will be a typical travesty. He’s a spoiled rich kid, bottom line, who figured the rules didn’t apply to him, and if he walks earlier, he will be confirmed in his belief. What an idiot, and his moron father taking the blame – “I wasn’t around enough” – doesn’t help. He’s 31 for gawd’s sake!

  2. Essie says:

If the minimum sentence guideline is 10 years then he will have to serve 10 years!! That’s the law and it should apply to him. I would imagine he confessed so that he would not be given more than 10 years. I really can’t imagine he would be given less time than others who have had the same charges filed against them.

I also doubt Cameron has an $80M trust fund. Does Michael Douglas even have that much money? I mean, he has never exactly been in the $20M per picture category and he does have two other children and a young wife to support.

    Not too smart there, kiddo!

  4. hater from siloam springs says:

It sort of boggles the mind to think that this kid’s (31 and he’s a kid?) grandfather was Spartacus. Somehow a tone of douchebag has gotten mixed in to gene pool.

I don’t jump to the conclusion that he was dealing because he thought that rules didn’t apply to him. There are a lot of not-rich people who go into the same line of “business”… It’s not exclusive to spoiled rich kids. Drugs are drugs, and they can affect you no matter how much money is in your wallet.

@ Essie – Don’t forget that Kirk Douglas is Micheal’s father, though. His family was already rich and famous when he was tiny. Not to mention that he’s been working as an actor, yes, but also a producer since the seventies… I don’t doubt the Douglas’s have a LOT of dough.

  6. Tia C says:

Clearly Cameron’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. What an embarrassment to his family. I’m just curious if he will get a real-world sentence or yet another “Hollywood” sentence.

  7. Iggles says:

What an idiot! He’s RICH? Why would he need to deal drugs? It’s bad enough to be a user, but to be a drug dealer when you HAVE MONEY is stupid beyond comprehension!

“Clearly he had a very privileged upbringing and a lot of chances in life and now he’s squandered it all away.”

    I couldn’t agree more.

  9. Godzilla says:

Don’t forget Michael’s a film producer too, and that is where a lot of the money lies. I wouldn’t be surprised by the $80.

  10. mwj says:

I’m not at all condoning Cameron’s dealing of drugs, however, no one knows how or when he got involved with drugs in the first place. Maybe Michael is willing to take some of the responsibility for not being around enough to play a positive role model in his son’s life or maybe he set a bad example that he feels led to the BEGINNINGS of this. Either way, it is natural for a parent to look for what they could have done differently when their child has such serious problems. Michael is not a “moron father” for looking at the big picture of his son’s problems.

  11. Taya says:

I would love to see this rich ass go to prison for 10 years and get the real prison treatment. But thats not going to happen. His rich daddy will get him out of this trouble and every other crap this loser gets into for the next 20 years. Hollywood can do no wrong in this society.

  12. TG says:

I don’t think it is about being rich so much about how he was raised. Not to say that good parents can’t produce bad children, but my brother also served prison time for “intent to distribute” and he was raised in the same household as me, the differnce being my parents were very strict with me and he never had a hand laid on him or had any chores, or ever got disciplined in his life and I think that is the root of his problems and many other “offenders” problems.

  13. Green Is Good says:

Cry me a river. When he gets out of the clink, he’ll still have his fat trust fund to soften the blow of being incarcerated.

  14. Cheyenne says:

Crack dealers in the ‘hood get fifteen years, so why should this spoiled over-grown teenager get any less? If you can’t do the time, don’t commit the crime. Throw his ass under the jail.

  15. Essie says:

Princess, I have no doubt the Douglas family is very rich. (They are, in fact, one of the “first families” of Bermuda.) However, $80M for one child’s trust fund sounds like way too much to me. The Douglas family also includes children other than Kirk, so that money was spread out; Kirk was a huge star in his day but he also had children other than Michael; and now, Michael has three children, PLUS a very expensive divorce behind him. I just don’t see where the $80M is coming from.

And, anyway, why would little Cameron need to sell drugs if he has that much money? I know rich kids are stupid sometimes but risking a hard 10 years upstate doesn’t seem to be worth it for another couple million, at most. Makes no sense to me.

  16. j. ferber says:

Ten years minimum? In LaLa Land this translates to one year probation, maybe six months to a year in jail.

  17. NicoleAM says:

If he was out on bail hanging out in his multi-million NYC townhouse…um, yea I’m gonna say he didn’t need to sell drugs. I would be more sympathetic if he was only abusing, but why the hell would you be selling drugs? Even if his trust isn’t for $80 mil, that whole family has a truckload of cash between them. This was def not a case of, “If I don’t make $ any way I can, I’m gonna starve on the streets!”

  18. Seer says:

I bet you his son won’t stay a SINGLE night in prison, and that all he’ll have to do is about a year of community service, and ONLY if they’ll prove it. Stars have their connections.
