Alec Baldwin was briefly hospitalized after threatening to take pills

16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Show

Ugh. In light of Alexander McQueen’s suicide, this story just doesn’t seem as urgent, you know? Because basically I have no idea what is going on in Alec Baldwin’s head. Baldwin was briefly hospitalized early this morning because when his daughter tried to wake him up, he was “unresponsive” and he had apparently threatened to take “some pills”. But, he’s fine now and already back at work:

Alec Baldwin is “completely fine” after he was examined at a New York City hospital, a spokesperson for the actor said Thursday.

Early Thursday morning, NYC’s WNBC News reported that Baldwin, 51, was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital after his 14-year-old daughter, Ireland, called 911, claiming that the 30 Rock star was “unresponsive” in their West Side apartment.

A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that Baldwin and his young daughter had argued and she told 911 he had threatened to take pills. (The official spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the person wasn’t authorized to speak publicly.)

“This was a misunderstanding on one person’s part,” Baldwin’s rep said in a statement. “Alec was quickly released from the hospital he’s completely fine and will be at work today.”

In 2008, Baldwin blamed a bitter custody battle with ex-wife Kim Basinger in part for the stress he was feeling when he called their daughter “a pig” in an irate 2007 voicemail.

Last year, he told Playboy that he contemplated suicide after the phone message was leaked to the press. “I spoke to a lot of professionals who helped me … If I committed suicide [Basinger’s side] would have considered that a victory. Destroying me was their avowed goal.”

[From Us Weekly]

Here’s what I think happened: Alec and his daughter had a fight, and Alec, being a bigger drama queen than his teenage daughter, yelled “Fine, I’ll just go take some pills and then you won’t have to worry about me ever again!” And he took one Ambien or something and went to sleep. Ireland was upset and tried to wake him early, and he was still really groggy and sleepy, and she feared the worse and called the paramedics. Doesn’t my version sound totally possible? My father does this to me too. The passive-aggressive guilt, the vein of drama-queen self-pity. I hate it. And it’s hell on daughters.

    He’s such a pr*ck!

I hope when Ireland grows up she writes a tell all about her parents. And I hope it destroy’s them.

  2. Sumodo1 says:

I agree with Kaiser’s assessment, because you KNOW he wants to mess up Steve Martin during the Oscars.

  3. Huma says:

Ugh. DAMN IT ALEC GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER. I could love you forever for your brilliant portrayal of Jack Donaghy, but COME ON DUDE. GIVE ME SOMETHING TO WORK WITH.

I hate when people I love on the big or silver screen are turds in real life. 🙁

  4. lastwordlinda says:

I agree with your assessment of how this went down, Kaiser. That poor kid. She probably was up crying all night and when she went to wake him, he faked not waking up. I have had people like that in my life. Losers, all. Hopefully she will survive having two wingy, self-centred, narcissistic parents.

  5. LindyLou says:

Ugh…I feel so sorry for that kid having such an idiot for a father.

  6. lucy2 says:

I feel so bad for that girl, both of her parents have been so vicious about their divorce and custody – both just want to WIN, and disregard what’s best for her.

I love Alec on 30 Rock, but he seriously needs to grow up and look at his personal relationships, because it’s clearly not working for him.

  7. JoeComment says:

That daughter of his is just like her mother…a BACKSTABBING BEEEAAUUUTTCCHHHHH!!!

  8. Tia C says:

Oh he’s still dysfunctional I take it? That’s a shame. That poor kid is going to have a boatload of issues thanks to her psychotic parents. I am an Alec fan – I love his work, and I appreciate his outspoken politics. I wish he would get some more help for his emotional issues though. Yikes, he acts like a teenage girl and his poor child is acting like the parent!

  9. Catherine says:

Who wants to bet Kim takes him back to court for full custody??

  10. jeannified says:

He is funny as hell, but the man definitely has issues. So sad for all involved!

  11. bella says:

I really hope this is just a mistake, as I think poor Ireland has enough to deal with, what with her mother being unable to leave the house due to her issues, and her father just being a passive-aggressive prick. That poor child. I’ll bet she can’t wait until she turns 18.

And Huma & lucy2, ITA with you both: Alec is a wonderfully intense actor, with the ability to be hilariously funny. But as I’ve said before, I think he has a barely contained rage running under the surface, and it’s worrisome.

  12. Anastasia says:

Gah, I love him SOOOOO FREAKING MUCH on 30 Rock. He’s so amazing on that show. I actually didn’t even like him before that role and now I do.

I hope this is just a misunderstanding.

  13. CadieBelle says:

I love Alec – he is my imaginary husband – but I think he needs some help. He didn’t mean it – but he is playing horrible mind games with his daughter – that is emotional child abuse

  14. whateva says:

why is no one considering that his teenager might be an actual brat? (shocker) and perhaps it is she who’s the pain-in-the-ass (not Alex), and she overreacted on purpose? as they commonly do???

  15. Ally says:

@ CadieBelle: ditto. Dramatic, irresponsible emotional/psychological abuse. He should lose his overnight visitation privileges and get a court-mandated shrink. Doing this to a 14-year-old child after what he already seemed in the habit of putting her through is unforgivable.

He rails about his custody arrangement, and then this is what he does with the time he has with his daughter. Jerk. I’m almost mad at Tina Fey for rehabilitating his image with that character.

  16. TG says:

Go Alec. Can’t stand his ex or that brat daughter.

  17. Simplicity says:

Sad … this man is accusing his wife of parental alienation when he is the one making his private life public, attacking both wife and daughter.

I agree, daddy the drama queen, who needs professional help.

  18. Maritza says:

He needs to find himself a wife, someone who will love him as he is. He is a bit gayish at times but I like him.

  19. Cinderella says:

Both Alec and Kim should be ashamed of themselves. They are both so damn selfish to realize what they’re doing to Ireland.

Major family therapy is in order.

  20. HateTribe says:

Maybe, Kaiser, but don’t forget… even the PR rep said he was “released from the hospital and fine.” They can’t take you to the hospital against your will. If he had just taken an Ambien – even if the paramedics had shown up – once he woke up and they determined he was okay, would an ambulance ride to the hospital have been necessary? I think there’s more to the story and “drama queen” is an accurate assessment.

  21. Rita says:

I feel extremely sorry for his 14 year old daughter. Her whole life has been filled with ultra strife between her idiot parents with her caught in the middle played out in the media. Now this.

  22. Rose says:

    He’s a Baldwin, they’re all nuts.

  23. Just a Poster says:

Seriously.. some of you are blaming his daughter??

    *sigh*

I think it is safe to say, Dude gots issues.

  24. UrbanRube says:

This is the worst kind of narcissism. That poor child should not be taking care of her father.

  25. GatsbyGal says:

He is fucking up his daughters and he doesn’t even care.

  26. Jeez, threatening to off yourself to your daughter??? How nice.

  27. cara says:

toxic behavour..no wonder his wife left him.he needs big time therapy and to get out of the past.Maybe if he got over his split ect. he wouldn’t be so toxic.

  28. lin234 says:

I love him on 30 Rock and he was so great in The Departed. I hope he works out his issues with his daughter because everything he’s doing right now will stick with her.

  29. Lady D says:

“I spoke to a lot of pro’s who helped me” Her side would have seen his suicide as a victory. Is that really his over-riding reason for not offing him-self? So she wouldn’t get the last word? How flipping old is this guy? Makes me laugh.
On a serious note; poor child.

  30. helene says:

Neither Kim nor Alec are going to win any prizes for parenting or sane behavior. IMO Kim is even crazier than Alec and even more vindictive. They remind me of that movie, “The War of the Roses”.

I think, at this point, the kid is just a bratty teenager fighting for attention. Unfortunately for her, her parents are fighting even harder for attention and will never let her have the spotlight. I hope that she gets a good education and establishes herself as a success in a career far, far away from acting.

  31. Ursula says:

I can’t believe that once upon a time, while reading Hello magazine, I came across this family, way back when they were still together. I remember thinking Ireland was so pretty and they were blessed to have such a beautiful happy family. I remember hoping they have another child. Now… now….sigh

  32. SoAmused says:

What a manipulative, self-centered douche! First he calls his daughter a “pig”, then he fakes a little suicide attempt? To a 14-year-old? How anyone can deliberately inflict this psychological damage on their own kid is beyond me. Hey, if you want to kill yourself, make sure you do it when no one is around. That way, we’ll know it wasn’t just a pathetic gesture. But hell, I have no doubt, it’s his ex-wife, women and feminists who will end up being blamed for his narcissistic behavior.

  33. Mikunda says:

You don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. He might be simply at a loss when it comes to dealing with his teenage daughter.
Teenagers can be mean and vindictive, you know. And can really press all the “right” buttons, because they tend to know their parents pretty well, which can often drive you crazy.
So I am sure that things were taken out of context. When I think of the fights that I have had with my parents… Yeah.
