Adam Lambert calls Susan Boyle’s CD ‘terrible,’ ‘sacrilegious’

Cinema Society & Donna Karan Host A Screening Of Happy Tears -After Party
Adam Lambert isn’t too pleased with the woman who kept his debut CD, For Your Entertainment, from reaching number one on the sales charts this holiday. Lambert had some bitchy things to say about the quality of Scottish underdog Susan Boyle’s CD, I Dreamed A Dream. The 28 year-old American Idol runner up told Gay Times that Boyle’s CD was “terrible” and that her cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” was so bad it made him laugh uncontrollably:

But weeks later, Adam answered his critics when For Your Entertainment sold 200,000 copies in its first week on sale, charting above new releases from Rihanna and Lady Gaga, albeit outsold by a certain Scottish lassie…

“I know, if only it weren’t for Susan Boyle!” Adam laughs. “I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible. Wild Horses is the one that made me laugh the hardest. I just died when I heard it, I was crying with laughter. It was the most horrendous, sacrilegious treatment of that song!

“Still, when my album charted, it was validating. I was feeling bit attacked, like I had to vindicate something. I thought: ‘Wow, look what I did.’”

[From Gay Times]

“Terrible,” “Horrendous,” and “Sacriligious?” It sounds like someone is so afraid of competition that they have to put down the musical efforts of a fellow reality show contestant runner up. Susan’s type of music might not be Lambert’s cup of tea, but it’s petty to resort to nasty criticism.

Meanwhile Lamber is still harping on the negative response to his outrageous performance at the American Music Awards, which featured a same sex kiss between Adam and his keyboard player, simulated oral sex on Adam from a female dancer, Adam grabbing his privates, and flipping the bird. He previously called the response “discrimination” because he was a gay male, and in his interview in Gay Times he goes on to say that they’re so much more enlightened in Europe and in the UK and that he wouldn’t have had the fallout that he faced in the states.

“It catches me off guard,” he admits, recalling the AMA nightmare. “In my circle, and in a lot of the underground clubs and performance spaces in Los Angeles nobody thinks twice about it, they love it. Then I gave what I thought was a harmless performance and everybody jumps down my throat about it. And I’m like ‘Sorry, I didn’t realise it was going to be that big a deal.’”

Hostility escalated when the (actually ace) cover of Adam’s space-themed debut album leaked days later. On it, Adam’s brave sense of style is epitomized – he appears in full make up, with electric blue hair and a pout to rival Victoria Beckham’s, looking like a character from the 80s movie Tron. And if a female artist had pulled the exact same pose…

“…With the soft focus, and the retouching,” he agrees, “nobody would have said a word. I’m glad you like it, but you’re the minority. Here in the States a lot of people are really uncomfortable with it, which is hilarious.

But Tron is a great movie!

“I just think you guys in the UK are way further ahead in terms of tolerance,” he adds. “It’s really interesting. In the UK and in Europe proper, it’s less of an issue because people are more comfortable with their sexualities And not just the gay thing, but even playful things, like the concept of androgyny. That is something that generally many Americans are uncomfortable with. Mixing masculine and feminine stereotypes together and playing with it, people get suspicious about it.”

[From Gay Times]

Yes, it’s all the American’s fault for having stricter standards for what they allow on broadcast television. I agree that some of that is unnecessary and that after living in Europe I have a different outlook on nudity and what should be on TV. As I mother I don’t mind my son seeing natural nudity or men or women kissing but I absolutely draw the line at simulated sex. Frankly I’m glad they do have standards for what can be shown along with a rating system. (Some of the crap on TV in Germany is way over the top. I wish my five year-old had never been exposed to a guy farting on a talent show with his ass cheeks exposed. Don’t get me started on the soft core phone crap they show at night.)

It’s very short sighted to say that Americans are somehow uncomfortable with gender bending due to the reaction to his album cover. That’s Adam for you, turning legitimate criticism into other people’s issue while cutting down someone he should be gracious towards. If he didn’t like Boyle’s album he could have just said it wasn’t his taste. He’s going to alienate even more people with these latest quotes.

    What a loser!

His album cover looks like crap. Appreciating it has nothing to do with being “evolved”.

I think his performance was terrible — not the reason he thinks. It was terrible because his vocals were horrendous. This was the first time non-Idol fans heard him sing and he blew it. He would have been better off lip syncing. Furthermore, he came off like a bratty, self-absorbed arse for the way he dealt with criticism of his performance.

I think he’s a decent artist but there’s no need for him to be rude to Susan Boyle. Jealousy is never a good look. She is talented and deserves her due. She’s not flashy and does not rely on “envelope pushing” to keep herself relevant like so many of our “artists” today.

“I just think you guys in the UK are way further ahead in terms of tolerance.” Let me tell you what Americans don’t tolerate, Adam. Album covers that look like they belong next to the Thompson Twins and PacMan records, featuring tripe music from a movie of the week starring the prom band. Piss off with the “tolerance” complaints and put out decent songs. Then perhaps no one will notice that you want to gender bend and blow your buddies. Geesh.

Lambert has pretty much proven that’s he’s a moron after the kerfluffle at the AMAs and the way he’s still kicking that dead horse.

He’s ticked off that he hasn’t been hailed as the next coming of Freddie Mercury, so he makes pissy comments about other people to keep his stupid mug in the headlines.

I’d like to put Lambert, Megan Fox, Jon Gosselin and John Mayer on a deserted island together.

I don’t care about two guys kissing but I don’t want to see (gay or straight) simulated oral sex. No thank you.
I mean, come on…have some class please! I can’t believe he said that America doesn’t have tolerance for androgyny. Hello, David Bowe!!!! As for the whole gay issue, who he sleeps with his is own business.

I hate his singing. It hurts my ears. I don’t understand how people can rave on about his vocal skills when all he is doing is screeching? I guess I’m in the minority.

When I first heard that song, “Waddya want from me?” I immediately disliked it. Didn’t know it was him until two months later (don’t listen to the radio much.) He sounds so different in that song, like they used autotune.

Subo actually has a better voice and he wants to put her down? Ugh…how disrespectful. You get what you give Adam!

I liked Adam on Idol and was interested in his album. Overall, his album is very disappointing. I really thought it would be amazing but it’s truly the definition of “meh”. Adam’s whole thing since Idol has been to flaunt his sexuality and image. And good on him for being so comfortable. I love that. But, how about focusing on your music for a change Mary.

And let’s face it , it’s fun to see celebs bitch about other celebs. F**K graciousness. ;-)

Still playing the sexuality card I see. No, the people that think you’re a pompous jerk are (most likely) not anti gay, or intolerant or anything like that. There are perfectly legit reasons to not like you Adam. The fact you happen to be gay isn’t even in the discussion anymore.

I think his words were overblown. He got overly wordy when describing his thoughts on ONE song. Personally I don’t know who thought it was a good idea to have Ms Boyle, perfectly nice singer that she may be, cover a classic Rolling Stones number (either).

As for Lambert, well, he’s trying a little too hard. But good luck to him. I’m pretty liberal but even I thought his performances were a little OTT. I’m sure he’s got a nice voice if he used it properly. It’s all a little reminiscent of a young(er) Madonna, except she had better songs.

Ok to preface…I am a big fan of equality for gay people, I’m super liberal, I have absolutely zero problems with non-sexual nudity on TV, and/or men and women kissing eachother, other men, other women, whatever.

    That being said…

    1. I’m not down with any gender simulating oral sex with any other gender on a TV show geared towards family entertainment.

    2. I hate hate HATE when people play the “oh it’s because I’m gay” card when really it’s just because they’re dumb.

    3. If a girl had released that cracked out blue haired soft focus feathered wannabe MAC ad album cover I would talk just as much crap on her as I would on him. Nothing to do with gender or orientation – that album cover just BLOWS.

I don’t really like him in general because he says he wouldn’t confirm or deny his sexuality while on American Idol because it might hurt his chances or whatever. That’s fine, but he clearly was pandering to the controversy of it all and using the situation to his advantage. Again, whatever, that’s fine, but don’t act all holier than thou like you didn’t contribute to your own problems.

He needs to check himself! I think he is indeed, a very talented young man, but he is a DIVA, and his true colors are showing early in the game. If he were totally professional and knew how to work the system, I think he’d be alot farther along now. As it is, he is letting his cocky side hang out all over the place, thus alientating people. It’s not because he isn’t talented either. It’s because he’s so full of himself. Cutting down other people, especially someone like Susan Boyle, will alienate people even further!

He is a self-important, tactless, tasteless, classless, big-headed idiot. Methinks he’s jealous because Susan has sold more than 8million CD’s worldwide, and LAMEbert barely managed to sell 500,000 (and that’s only in “units shipped”, not sold). His loyal middle aged housewife fanbase surely can’t keep defending him all the time, can they? Too bad none of the cool kids like this tranny. 3 minutes left, Lamebert, tick tock. He IS NOT THAT TALENTED. Please, there are SO MANY people out there who can sing circles around this d-bag, and they’ll do it with class, unlike him.

I have to stop everyone right here. Adam Lambert has about as much taste as a glitter-covered, fluorescent pink Christmas tree, but he is a wondrous singer. Susan Boyle WISHES she had a tenth of his talent.

With that said, Adam’s remarks were both impolite and unprofessional. Then again, Susan Boyle is famous for being the world’s vicarious expiation for the obsession we have with youth and beauty. A rural Cinderella that allows many people to dream that they can also make it, even though there’s nothing even remotely outstanding about them. There’s nothing outstanding about her voice. It’s just that Simon Cowell knows how to hype his little products very well.

I saw some of his performances when he was on AI and thought he was really good so I was excited about seeing him on the AMAs. That performance was crap. I wondered where the voice I’d liked went and he was trying SO hard to shock it was a huge turnoff. Then his excuses afterwards were an even bigger turnoff. Now this about Susan Boyle.

I heard her sing Wild Horses somewhere and it wasn’t that great. But she doesn’t deserve to be mocked by some self important fellow reality show runner up. Adam Lambert needs to go back and relearn some basic courtesy and respect.

You know I think this comment is a little overblown but it was still, at the very least, tactless. I’m sure he’d appreciate someone doing the same thing to him all over the press when he’s done nothing to them, either. And for many, everyone who comes off a reality TV show – whether it’s Adam or Susan – is a hack who doesn’t have real talent. You’d think he’d be a bit more mindful that people say the same things about him and remember how it feels.

I was a fan of Adam’s on the show, but with every interview I read, I find myself less and less interested in him or anything he does. Especially when he starts speaking about things like feminism, which he obviously knows very little about. A gay man’s struggles in today’s society are not automatically the same as a woman’s, no matter how many times he tries to equate them. And honestly, I don’t need a male Ke$ha; the female version is enough.

Being a frequent user of sarcasm myself, I have to say that Lambert’s use of the, “shucks, I was just funnin’, folks” excuse is eye-rollingly stupid. He got caught and didn’t get the reaction he wanted, so he backpedaled. Or more likely, his agent/publicist planted a foot in his butt and told him to get back out there and make up an excuse.

Sentences also begin with capital letters, 33. Now that’s sarcasm.

He was so kind and unassuming on Idol — now? Well, he is only adding to the “bitchy” stereotype that gay boys carry.

If I was his agent, I’d tell him to find that nice guy image again and keep up the glitter and glam — that’s “him” and it works. But lose the diva attitude.

I wonder how it’s possible that Adam has not yet woken to the fact that his own album is unbearably bad. Was his turn on Idol a fluke? Susan I understand. Producers marketed her into a safe, mostly suffocating corner. Still Wild Horses was a strong entry, and as others have noted Adam is a pop star not a rock star. And “pop” is notable for it’s severe limitation. It’s flash but tends to be light on core creativity and emotional range, despite the fact that some are very fine vocalists, including Adam (or at least he was.)

Given that, Adam shouldn’t comment on how good or bad a rock song written by rock legends is or is not interpreted.

He is dirty and disgusting and posseses talent that no one wants to see or hear. He was much better when he was under the constraints of the IDOL show. Now that he is free to do what he wants, he lets it all hang out. And, it’s unappealing. Everyone wondered why he had not been signed to a label before IDOL. Now we know why. There is nothing there that we want to see.

Susan Boyle on the other hand, was a true diamond in the rough. I LOVE Wild Horses, even better than the original. She insn’t crazy, but rather trying to find a delicate and appropriate way to respond to her instant success, which has at times overwhelmed her. I heard her rendition of “Wild Horses”. It’s clear Adam knows nothing about music. Her cover was good, but not my favorite. There was nothing to laugh about. The original is a classic but it has been re-interpreted so many times in different ways. It’s the type of song where you can change around the musical arrangement and still have it hold up well.

SuBo did a slow, broadway singer version. The original was a stripped down, acoustic rock piece. My favorite “Wild Horses” cover is by The Sundays. They have a female singer. The musical arrangement is mostly acoustic but it has a spacey ambient guitar rift throughout the chorus. It’s lovely! The song was on the soundtrack to the movie “Fear” (with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg).

If the original was a metal song loud with distortion guitars, then SuBo’s version would seem weird (a la Sheryl Crow’s cover of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns and Roses). BUT, it’s not.

    Glambert is a tool.

I like him in interviews but on stage he has zero appeal. I’m not into drag but I have seen it done way better. Wearing make up isn’t original. It also doesn’t divert attention from an obvious lack of star quality. He just doesn’t seem to have “it”. He’s likely been screeching all his life and is accustomed to being under the impression that people enjoy it. Not so.

“…..featuring tripe music from a movie of the week starring the prom band. Piss off with the “tolerance” complaints and put out decent songs. Then perhaps no one will notice that you want to gender bend and blow your buddies.”

And thinking you’re being revolutionary while doing it!

lol just thought @Meanie’s post was worth repeating.

It catches me off guard,” he admits, recalling the AMA nightmare.

What a little twit! The AMA is not his “little circle” people did not diss his performance because he was gay but because it was bad, and in bad taste. Pullleeeze spare me the discrimination thing you little tool!

I don’t have a hard time taking Adam Lambert seriously, but I do have a hell of a time taking the comments by these twits and idiots seriously. Who cares what he thinks about straights, the guy has the most fabulous voice and range I’ve ever heard outside of opera. He could be a friggin’ toad and I’d still listen to him, unlike Susan “open” Boyle, who is everything the above bafoons think Lambert to be.

Susan Boyle is an incredibly talented lady who’s been subjected to considerable ridicule in the media. IMHO she deserves every bit of success that she is experiencing.

I am still laughing my ass off at Lambert and his dodo brain fans, They listen to this cabbage patch doll they call there idol who sings like a drunken parrot and then have the gall to talk about Susan Boyles cd.she sold more in her tea break than he will in his whole career,World record holder in 8 countries almost 70 platinum cd’s,World record holder on amazon and many many more i could say,Known in Mongolia, suadi Arabia,India, pakistan venezuela and every country on earth,He is known in every sleaze bar in the usa and Canada,Apart from that no one has ever heard of the jerk.I find it real stimulating that he got his ass well and truly thrashed by a singer he could never hold a candle to.Advice for you lambert ,when you release another cd
( providing any record company ever will let you ) ensure they do not release it on the same day as Susan will,Another thrashing which you surely will get would be another reason for all of us to take the piss out of you and your second rate moronic apology you call fans

Regardless of who-how Susan Boyle came to us, she is a true gift to the world. Few people can listen to the all new CD and disparage her. It is an emotional exprerience. I am truly sorry for any who deny themselves the pleasure of this performance!

As for exploitation, I am hoping to be exploited like she has been!

  75. Andrew Burns says:

I am so delighted that on the 5th april Susan Boyle soared back to the top of the Amazon charts in all categories,Also so delighted that lamberts own fans have gone to youtube in droves and slagged him off after hearing wild horses and say they now disown him.By the end of April Susan will hit the 10+ million mark leaving that apology of a man, ( If he is a man that is )in her wake.He should learn to put a boot in his mouth instead of a mans penis then maybe, just maybe he will learn to keep his big mouth shut. And notice his rapidly decling fan base as Susans becomes even greater as she heads rapidly towards 400 million on the internet videos. Now stick that in your pipe and smoke it,lambert dodo brain fans.

He’s in so much denial about the Ama performance. I thought the guy was smart, but not now. He thinks it’s discrimination that people don’t want to see gruesome sexual things acted out on stage as if it were a S&M party? I don’t care if it’s straight guys and girls doing that. It’s just gross. And if they love it in Europe it says a lot about them. Or not much. My advise is go over to Europe Adam where you’re sick dancing is accepted.

well, it’s a shock for me too… i love adam lambert so much and love his songs… but now, i really understand why he hates his big mouth. before come out from American Idol, adam said that he has a big mouth and got a lot of troubles because of that.. now, i can see that… as a glambert, those words hurt me too… he insulted not only Susan Boyle, but all girl glambert.. i start think that he really hates women….
