Bret Michaels won’t apologize for inappropriate duet with Miley Cyrus

NBC Universal's Press Tour Cocktail Party - Arrivals

Last Friday, I put this initial story in the links, just because I didn’t really think it was newsworthy enough for its own post. I mean, yeah, the Cyrus family wouldn’t know what was appropriate if it hit them on the head. That’s not breaking news. Basically, the story is that not only did Miley Cyrus record a cover of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” with Bret Michaels, she and Bret did this faux-duet of his song “Nothin’ to Lose”. Sample lyrics from the song? “We both know better than this/Still we can’t resist/Slowly get undressed.” Yeah. Oh, and apparently Miley’s mom Tish was there while they recorded – and Tish and Bret might have something going on too. Anyway, Bret came out a few days ago to do damage control on the whole “this is way inappropriate” vibe.

Bret Michaels says he has nothin’ to apologize for about “Nothin’ to Lose,” his new song featuring Miley Cyrus. In the country-rock ballad that went online Thursday, Cyrus, 17, harmonizes as Michaels, 46, croons about a bad romance: “We both know better than this/Still we can’t resist/Slowly get undressed.” In the sensual chorus, they sing together: “Won’t you fall down on me/So close I can feel you breathe.”

In an exclusive interview Friday, Michaels tells UsMagazine.com he’s gotten “75 texts” about the scandal that blazed the web late Thursday. “I was like, ‘What the f*ck is going on?’ Everyone’s going nuts!”

“It’s blown out of proportion,” insists the father of two girls (Raine, 9, and Jorja, 4).
The Rock of Love star and Poison frontman explains that he wrote the song “a couple years ago,” and had recorded it solo without Cyrus.

But the Hannah Montana star wanted to remake his gritty classic “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” for her next album, with the elder rocker as her producer. When the teen phenom recorded “Rose” in a New York studio with her mother Tisch standing by, Michaels played them “Nothin’ to Lose” during a break.

“[Miley's] like, ‘This is an incredible song, it’s beautiful. Maybe I could some stuff to it, some harmonies,’” Michaels recounts. “I said, ‘That’d be killer!’”

The next thing they knew, the unlikely pair were recording “Nothin’” together. “She was excited that she didn’t have to follow any rules,” he says of their impromptu jam session.
What about, you know, that “slowly get undressed” stuff? “I never sat down and said, ‘Look at the content. Look at the lyrical content,’” Michaels admits.

In his defense, he adds that “the part where it says she slowly gets undressed, Miley says, ‘Yeah she does.’ It has no reference to her and I. It’s not even a duet.” He says he got “very positive comments” (no one advised him against it) on the finished track, which will appear on his solo album Custom Built, out in late May.

“As God is my witness, there is nothing I have to be defensive about,” he says. “I’m a good Dad. I just thought it was a beautiful song.”

He adds that he and Cyrus are mutual fans of each other. “Her first concert ever was Poison. Now I take my kids and they go see her play. It’s awesome!”

[From Us Weekly]

Am I totally crazy for understanding Bret’s point? I can actually see how, in his mind, there was absolutely nothing wrong or inappropriate with he and Miley singing this song. And considering I have some kind of crazy affection for Bret, I’m willing to give him a pass. I mean, it’s not like Miley is his kid. He’s not responsible for deciding what is and is not appropriate for Miley. And obviously, Tish didn’t think there was anything wrong. Why would she? She (and The Mullet) have absolutely no “appropriateness barometer”.

Speaking of, here is Miley with her boyfriend Liam over the weekend. As my mother always told me, “If those jeans get any tighter, I’ll be able to see your vagina.”

I never thought this was inappropriate. What is inappropriate is that fact that Miley is probably going to BUTCHER Every Rose, which I thought was very personal to Bret.. Ugg.

So Miley’s first concert was Poison….that says a lot about how her parents brought her up! I’ve seen them live and while the show was great I would not think it an appropriate night out for a child.

Ok- I’m just going to say this: WTF is up with Bret’s face? What did he do to himself? YIKES!

Ok, now that that is off of my chest; at least after reading this the duet makes more sense. I didn’t know Miley was covering his song- I thought it was a random decision of Bret’s to add Miles to the song. Am I the only one who doesn’t find this to be TOTALLY inappropriate? Mildly, maybe. Come on- she’s 17; and in the version I heard you can’t even really hear her. And she does sing “she” as in it’s not about her. I think people just like to criticize her because she’s a Disney star and I think people want her to end up the next Lindsay Lohan- but I think she has a much better head on her shoulders and gets a lot more support from her family. Yeah Miley’s parents make questionable decisions, but if Bret had never played the song for her, this duet never would have happened. And Bret knew what he wrote the song about- he knew that getting a 17 year old to sing it with him would garner attention especially when that teen is none other than Miley Cyrus.

You are right about the total lack of any kind of “appropriateness barometer” in the Cyrus family. That’s why no news out of this trailer park ever surprises me.

They probably knew it’d cause a ruckus (sic?). Appropriateness doesn’t exist in the attention-whore world.

the thought of bret michaels having daughters is unsettling. i wonder how he would react if some doofus treated his girls the way he treats women – like whores?

Big deal. I remember Tanya Tucker getting flack for covering the David Allan Coe song “Would You Lay with Me (in a Field of Stone)” when she was younger than Miley is. I remember siblings getting flack for duetting on love songs. They’re professionals singing songs, like actors playing a part. This isn’t her autobiography.

  15. LolaBella says:

It is quite clear that neither the Cyrus parents nor Bret Michaels possess an “appropriateness barometer”.

If the Cyrus parents did then we wouldn’t have had a 16 year Miley gyrating like a hoochie and dancing on a stripper pole attached to an ice-cream cart at the frigging Teen Choice Awards.

If Bret did then he wouldn’t have been doing a show on VH1 the sole purpose of which was for him to bang skanks to determine which one was the ‘best’ to be on his tour bus.

How can he, as a father to two young girls be a part of something that exploits women and lauds them degrading themselves?

That said, the duet was inappropriate but none of the parties involved are intelligent enough to ever understand why.

As a singer to say, you didn’t even look at the context of the lyrics?
Common man, stop with the BS.
For them it’s just publicity, good or bad, they’ll reap from it regardless. In truth though, the song is 100% inappropriate, it’s a pedophile undertone in every way, shape and form. I can imagine all the sick f**** out there looking at kiddie porn on the computer, with that song in the background, hell why not, society says it’s ok! Miley, this song, the pole dancing, this is all a ploy to over sexualise the kiddies. Disney has been evil for a long time. Don’t say it doesn’t happen, it does, it’s all part of the agenda, to corrupt society. When I see a child, wearing a WTF t-shirt, I could smack the parents right in the stupid gob. It’s just not on. Some poor kids haven’t got a hope in hell. They are victims of society and a dirty, corrupt on at that! It’s in the same league as 14 year old girls having to pass arounf carrots in sex ed. and place condoms on them. what on earth do kids that age get out of that? Teach them anything, as long as it’s not important, deliberate dumbing down of our children. My 14 year old boy doens’t need to hear what to expect from his first time, should he choose to have anal sex, being talked about in school, by teachers. Teach them geograpphy, maths, spelling, more things that matter. Our kids are learning less than ever, whilst elite schools have a totally different corriculum. Keep the rich smart and the middle-poor dumber than ever. Make them obssessed with sex, dehumanise them in every way possible etc.The other shit, they’ll work it out for themselves, they don’t need to be corrupted with it so early on. The powers to be have gone mad, not us!

So few guys at that age have the good genes to pull off that look naturally. Okay looking guys who use long hair (real or fake) really annoy me. When reality hits, don’t be there. Hospital time.

  19. Istanem says:

He doesn’t even understand why it’s inappropriate. We get that he wasn’t singing it about Miley in particular, or that they weren’t even together at the time of it’s recording – it’s the message that it sends out to kids when a 46 year old man is singing a sexual song with a 17 year old child. It’s saying that’s its an ok thing to do but for educated people with half a brain and a few morals, it is clearly not something you want to encourage your children to be enjoying and singing along to in the back of the car. Moron.

  24. There are certainly a whole lot of particulars like that to take into consideration. That is a nice point to bring up. I supply the ideas above as general inspiration however clearly there are questions like the one you bring up the place crucial thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if finest practices have emerged around issues like that, but I am positive that your job is clearly recognized as a good game. Both girls and boys really feel the influence of only a second’s pleasure, for the remainder of their lives.
