Katie Holmes isn’t totally robotic in ‘The Romantics’ trailer

Oh, this is a good one! Even though The Romantics only wrapped, like, in December or something, somehow a quickie trailer was cut, and here we have it! Katie Holmes being nailed to a tree by Mr. Fergie himself, Josh Duhamel. The Romantics is a pretty basic story about a group of old friends reuniting for a wedding. That wedding is supposed to be between Anna Paquin’s character and Josh Duhamel’s character. And Katie is a friend of both, but she and Duhamel used to date each other, and they’re still in love with each other, et cetera. Hijinks ensue. Other “friends” include Elijah Wood, Adam Brody and Malin Akerman. Oh, and Candice Bergen is in there too somewhere.

Okay, this movie looks totally crappy and derivative, stealing from movies like The Big Chill, The Best Man (that surprisingly good movie with Taye Diggs and Nia Long) and Rachel Getting Married, amongst many others. That being said, it totally doesn’t look as terrible as it could be.

My favorite things about this trailer, in no particular order:

*Katie Holmes isn’t acting like she’s under constant threat of an audit by Xenu, she’s actually showing some emotional depth as an actress.

*Katie getting kissed passionately by Josh, which makes me wonder when this poor girl has ever been taken roughly against some shrubs by a man who doesn’t need to “pretend” he’s straight.

*Katie produced this film, so it’s nice to see her trying to do something beyond Xenu.

*Everyone is so short! Except for Katie and Josh, who seem like giants in the land of the little people.

*Anna looks nice! It’s good to see her working on something modern, without mucking around with vampires.

Here are some photos from the filming of The Romantics, which was in New York:

@Mins15-I had the same thought! Her legs are typically really slim-they look toned, still, but just thicker than usual. I can’t decide if it’s the clothes, shoes, and angles, or if she had put on some weight for the role, etc.

Her legs are not typically really slim. She might be sometimes on a bit slimmer side, but this is exactly how her legs are built (just different angle). They are usually toned but never slim. She does have tree trunks for legs.

The clothing in this movie, much like what she picks out in real life, is really, really unflattering.

    “The Best Man” being a surprisingly good movie…WHY WOULDN’T IT BE…with the cast…the director…the writer…etc….

    SIGH…

To be fair neither Anna’s legs nor anyone else’s look that good either. It’s not just the Land of the Giants, it’s the Land of the Fat Pasty Legs.

Everyone’s wearing flats too, heels would have made things better, but the giants couldn’t have worn those and it would have looked odd if the midgets wore them but the giants didn’t. Eh, it won’t be anything I’d go see, but I’ll watch it when it comes to On Demand probably.

Despite the fact that (as Kaiser astutely pointed out) it looks like it rips off plotlines from several other movies, I saved it in my netflix queue. I’m curious. I love True Blood but I’m not a big Anna Paquin fan, so I’m curious if she can do anything besides ever-so-earnest Sookie.

Not the best time of day to film a scene; everyone is squinting.

Katie’s legs have always had that “tree-trunk” quality. Even after she lost all that weight.

Malin’s look like twigs (no, you can’t win with me.)

I still resent Anna Paquin being cast as Sookie. She is supposed to be pretty and busty.

  16. Michelle says:

Same, Ana. Such a disappointing choice for Sookie. Although I guess if they went for a more conventionally pretty but utterly annoying actress I’d hate that too. Anna Paquin looks a bit bigger here, she was absolutely tiny on the first season of TB. I reaaaallllyyy hope next season isn’t just some lame-ass melodramatic triangle with Eric and Bill fighting over her for no discernable reason. We already have Twilight.

    One word for Katie: cankles

    One word for Anna: fug.

Though I’m sitting in p.j.’s so I know I’m not the portrait of stunning beauty: LOL.

I’ve always wondered where Katie Holmes’ acting skills went – she was very good in Pieces of April, mediocre thereafter.

Yay Anna Paquin! I love her crazy little face. And I also love the way it’s ability to express an actual identifiable emotion gets her branded as ‘ugly’, because as we all know a girl should never let her feelings go so far as to cause epidermal disturbances. My god does she not know that we have injections for that now??!!
Anna Paquin, embodiment of hideousness. You’d think she’d go and hide under a rock with all that horrible fug weighing her down.
Yes, I am rolling my fucking eyes, glad you asked.

This doesn’t look that bad as far as romcoms go.
    I might download it.
But I just can’t stand Anna Paquin. She is a terrible, TERRIBLE actress. (and doon’t give me that Oscar crap–she was eleven)

  21. Ana says:

It’s not her “ability to express an actual identifiable emotion” that causes us to think she is ugly.

    That would be her face.

  22. I Choose Me says:

I like Anna Paquin and I like her face. Like the fact that she doesn’t feel the need to conform to Hollywood ‘standards’ of beauty and close the gap in her teeth. That said, she’s better looking as a brunette (She looked awesome in Trick r Treat) and yeah her acting is shit in True Blood, no getting around that fact. Eh, Katie’s legs look fine to me. Perfection is boring.

“perfection is boriong” Exactly! And that is why I think Anna Paquin is beeeyutiful!

  24. Ana says:

I think “perfection is boring” is a mantra that people repeat to make themselves feel better about their flaws. No one is perfect, therefore even the most beautiful people are not boring. I still think she is not pretty, but I realize that everyone has different opinions on what is attractive.

I have a love/hate relationship with her gap. I like that she likes it and is confident with it. But at the same time, it’s all I can look at and (I have said this before) I’m pretty sure she could fit another tooth in there.

I will have to start telling myself that perfection is boring when I look at my own acne scarred face.
