Ricky Gervais lashes out at the homogenizing Hollywood system

Ricky Gervais Does Letterman

Ricky Gervais is sensitive about his weight. You can tell he’s sensitive, because he’s used public and media criticism of his weight in his stand-up acts and in his scripts. He’s trying to get to the criticism before the critics, but you can tell that it bothers him. Call me crazy, but I’ve always loved that Ricky is a little fluffy, and I think he wears his weight well. So he’s got a belly… more to love! Anyway, Ricky has lost some weight recently – he still looks a little fluffy, and he’s still cute, but his image does seem a bit sleeker and tighter. The British tabloids noticed that Ricky had lost the weight, and they began reporting (in a snotty way) that Ricky had “gone Hollywood” and lost weight because he wanted to be a bigger star. So, when The Telegraph finally got Ricky for an interview, and got to ask him questions about his weight loss, Ricky sort of went off about how much he hates all of the Americans who want him to get skinny, fix his teeth and be our next big British import.

Ricky Gervais has launched a withering attack on Hollywood over suggestions he dramatically slimmed down to kick start his film career. Gervais, 48, said he would never ‘starve himself’ just to land a part and insisted his loss of three stones in weight is due to a new fitness regime following the installation of a gym at his home in Hampstead in north London.

In an interview to promote his new film Cemetery Junction, Gervais said: “The Hollywood pressure is that you do have to be of a certain standard or a certain type. I see everyone doing it, even good character actors. I think, ‘Why are you starving yourself?’ The pressure is there to have white, straight teeth…”

Warming to the theme, Gervais, who has recently bought an apartment in Manhattan with his long-time partner Jane Fallon, went on to rant against the Hollywood system, sprinkling his language with swear words.

In an interview with The Times newspaper, Gervais said: “What is in America? I don’t give a **** what they think and if I don’t get a film role because my teeth are crooked, then **** them, I don’t want it. I just go, ‘It’s ridiculous.’”

“I hate them, and I hate that people think that I would. It makes me angry. I remember when a newspaper said, ‘He’s lost three stone for Hollywood.’ I went, ‘No, I haven’t lost three stone and I would never ******* do it for Hollywood. I did it ‘cos I work out and I wanna be fit.’ And that annoys me.”

Gervais shot to fame with the television comedy series The Office which was then followed by the highly acclaimed Extras. He has since switched to movies.

Cemetery Junction, which opnes on April 14 and is co-directed and co-written by gervais and Stephen Merchant, stars Gervais alongside Emily Watson and Ralph Fiennes.

It is set in the 1970s in reading in Berkshire where Gervais grew up.

[From The Telegraph]

Note: Ricky isn’t saying he hates Americans in general or America in total. He seems to be limiting his obscenities to “the Hollywood system”. And of course he has a point – the Hollywood system that promotes homogenous “beauty” gives way to monstrosities like Heidi Montag. I’d much prefer to look at Ricky’s crooked teeth and Buddha belly than people like Heidi or Kellan Lutz or any of the people we’re told we should find “sexy”. Now, all that being said, it seems to me like Ricky is a little sensitive about why he lost weight, which makes me think that part of the reason might have been for health reasons, but part of it might just be simple vanity. Vanity isn’t against the law, you know.

I love Gervais. Maybe he was tired of the moobs and wanted to avoid a heart attack. He must’ve scared the interviewer-I’d never want to make an enemy of Ricky-he’s got a wicked wit.

  2. irishserra says:

I surely hope Ricky doesn’t “fix” his teeth. I think they distinguish him quite a bit. I love the way he looks!

  3. Shawna says:

Hear, hear, all respect and love to fluffy men!

  4. gg says:

Dude — It was you who decided to bring your unfunny self over here. Hollywood is fakesville and always has been.

  5. Tess says:

Love Ricky and hope he keeps up the good fight against Hollywood homogenization.

When the grand Poobahs of Hollywood begin to come up with some original ideas—for anything, anything at all—other than their typical, tired movie remakes and support for nanny state politicos, then maybe they’ll have some opinions worth listening to.

  6. Cor says:

I mean, there is definitely a little hating on america with the “what is in America?”

  7. Leek says:

He is so right. If you look back at celebrities’ first films and through the years you can see how much they change. Although, I’m sure anyone who sees themselves 10 lbs. heavier on film has a sudden desire to lose a little bit. It’s just ashame that it’s being demanded by execs and producers, etc.

  8. Butch says:

Glad he lost some weight. He looks good whether he likes it or not. HA on you Gervais….I’m glad you lost the weight, but no one will believe that you did it for YOU. It’ll always be…”he did it for Hollywood”. Love him so damn much.

  9. Tia C says:

I’m a recent Gervais convert. The original “Office” did little for me. And Gervais also did little for me, in pretty much everything he appeared in. Then I saw “The Invention of Lying,” and now I adore him. That has got to be one of the funniest, most irreverent movies I’ve ever seen. Irreverence gets me every time. He’s hilarious. I’m glad he’s cussing out Hollywood. Go Ricky!

  10. ElizabethM says:

Awwww, I love his teeth/smile. I hate that anyone would criticize it.

    Team Ricky, ftw!

  11. TG says:

Can’t stand Ricky – he always seems so bitter and jealous of Steve Carell, whom I adore on film.

  12. Ron says:

It doesn’t matter how big of a star you are, in Hollywood you are ALWAYS treated like a piece of meat. There are so many actors/actresses/writers/directors etc etc who all strive to look good and younger. There was recently a class action settlement here against the producers/studios on behalf of WRITERS for age discrimiation for writers over 40. 40 for god’s sake. Hollywood is a tough town and unfortuately, looking good is part of your job here pretty much regardless. When you meet alot of the actors in person they are painfully thin. I personally think women look great with some curves. Men look good with some bulk on them, it’s truly more masculine than the model thin men here. If you are a man with a waist smaller than 32 at age 40, eat a sandwich.

    PS Love Ricky.

Ricky Gervais is not a star in America because he had two movies that totally bombed!!! He’s just chewing on sour grapes because Hollywood doesn’t want him, fat or skinny. He should just stay in England and make movies there. Nobody here wants him. He’s not handsome; he’s not talented; and worse of all, HE’S NOT FUNNY!!!

  14. d says:

Gervais is funny; it’s just a kind of funny that some people don’t like or get. Very British, bitchy, wierd humour – cracks me up every time. He’d fit right in here Celebitchy! You guys should try to get an interview with him!

  15. Bee says:

Shoot me, but I like looking at beautiful people. Hollywood is a fantasy land in which everyone is gorgeous and probably smells really good. I’m not saying that actors who don’t want to lose weight or straighten their teeth must do so. But, I also don’t think there is anything wrong with enjoying the fantasy world that hollywood provides. I mean honestly aren’t some of the reasons we love/hate/are fascinated by Hollywood stars because they’re so much more attractive and interesting than the average Joe? We’re interested in them because they don’t look or act like the rest of us.

  16. Sincerity says:

    @Ron:

Could this be the reason why we don’t see more quality scripts being produced into movies? You would think given the reality that baby boomers are rapidly aging, more attention would be given to issues that we can actually relate to. I really admire Tyler Perry for opening his own movie studio. He’s servicing a demographic that has always been routinely ignored — African Americans. Perhaps someone else should do the same for the baby boomers.

regarding the thing about how celebs have changed.. How many of you look like your high school or college photos.. I sure hope to hell I improved. I make more money now then 1 years ago. I can afford to buy better cloths and take care of myself. So nothing different about a celeb. who makes millions. Millions of dollars afford you better looks. So nothing wrong with that. And he contradicts himself when he said that someone said to him that he lost weight for Hollywood.. he said HE wanted to be fit.. Well maybe those other celebs did so for the same reason.

Not saying Hollywood is not fake.. but notice the FAKE looking people in Hollywood don’t last a long time. They fade away. It is a weeding out so to speak. REAL actors/actresses are still around. Timeless. The phony and none talents who had nothing but their looks are fading away. Think about it and I think you will agree. I can name at least 20 off the top of my head. Some are on those dumb reality shows. Others posing at any and every event. So see Talent Stays..

  18. carrie says:

we are hypocritical here:when an actor /actress is less thin than usually,we are the first to blame him/her

Remember the story on this female model Coco Rocha about too thin models

  19. Kimble says:

@TG: It’s a long running joke – we Brits have a particular piss taking/sarky humour which you maybe don’t get – it was the whole comedy premise of The Office which made Carell a star!

I think Ricky would look tons better without the Dad jeans!

  20. Aitch says:

What is a stone anyway? What is the equivalent in Lbs.? I think he is terribly funny and adorable and I have since I watched The Office for the first time when it first came out on DVDs.

  21. Aussie Mama says:

Just saw “The Invention Of Lying” over the weekend, AWESOMMMMME!
He is right, the cheek implanted, botoxed people are freaks indeed. Stay as you are Dude, we love you so much more, when your face actually moves, that’s why we find you so entertaining, your real, like us!!!

  22. Jennifer says:

    A stone equals 14 pounds.

  23. Bob says:

Hollywood should hire more actors and actresses who are talented and funny, and fewer that are hired just because they’re hot. I’d much rather go see a Gervais movie than one starring another talentless pretty boy.

  24. anjasmomma says:

Ricky Gervais is the best!! I think he is so funny. LOVE HIM!!

  25. Moomoo says:

Everyone wants to look their best ffs, & i’m with Bob, i’d take an interesting funny person over a pretty boy any day.

  26. Sally says:

Ricky is talented and funny, if not an asshole at times. His humour *is* very ‘British’.

  27. Michelle says:

He’s not funny. And I don’t buy into that “oh you don’t understand, british humour is so sophisticated/dry/witty it goes over your head” automated response. Funny british comedies: Peep Show. Coupling. The Thick of It. Skins is awesome. Ricky Gervais has NEVER made me laugh, not once. And he does seem to have quite a nasty temper from interviews I’ve seen, so unappealing.

  28. gen says:

He better not touch his teeth, I love them

  29. Renee says:

Ricky Gervaise is a riot! He was cute then and still is.

  30. Aitch says:

Thank you Jennifer for the answer to what is equivalent of a stone.

If you like Ricky Gervais you MUST watch “Extras.”

  31. Lilias says:

I think he’s very funny and I think he’s one of those people who you either like or dislike. Actually, all comedians are like that. You either like their humor or you don’t. Nothing wrong with it either way though.

TG: Ricky Gervais is an executive producer on the American version of the Office. He hired Steve Carell. And from what I can tell, they get along great. Otherwise, you can’t be as sarcastic with each other as these two are.

  32. Bear says:

Go back to England. There are too many wogs on our TV already. Don’t let the door hit your fat ass on your way out.

It’s not that I don’t like him…. Just who cares?
