I think this is what divorcing couples should aim for – forget the bullsh-t, and just focus on the kids and having a cordial relationship. Easier said than done, I know. But here are Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet giving it the old college try today, as they take their kids to school in New York. This photo op comes not a moment too soon, because the British tabloids (and to a lesser extent, the American tabloids) had Winslet in a state of frenzy, sobbing on Emma Thompson’s shoulder and screaming at the ocean, all while trying to seduce her dearest friend, Leo DiCaprio. Meanwhile, Sam Mendes was portrayed as a douche who dumped his beautiful wife for either a younger version (Rebecca Hall) or the old girlfriend who he just couldn’t stop thinking about (Rachel Weisz). She’s has an Oscar to her name but Kate Winslet’s acting skills were really put to the test as she reunited with estranged husband Sam Mendes today. The 34-year-old managed to raise a convincing smile as the pair staged a united front for the sake of the children.
She emerged from her New York apartment holding the hand of her nine-year-old Mia, from her first marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton. Director Sam, 44, followed close behind with their son Joe, 6, in tow.
The pair piled into the same car and proceeded to drop the children to school.
It is the first time they have been seen together since they announced the end of their almost seven year marriage last month.
The triplex property, where they lived for six years, is in the city’s affluent Chelsea district and is said to have been put on the market for £3.9million. Sam is believed to be living in an office that he has in the building, while Kate and the two children have remained in the three-bedroom, three-storey flat at the top of the building.
Kate has spoken of her desire to move back to England to be closer to friends and family, but has been staying in Manhattan while she films Mildred Pierce, a mini series for the HBO channel.
The five-part series is based on the the 1941 Jame M. Cain novel about a woman who leaves her unemployed husband and re-builds her life.
Kate has maintained a dignified silence since her split from Sam, but on Saturday, the Daily Mail’s Katie Nicholl reported that she is angry that he has got back in touch with his ex-girlfriend Rachel Weisz.
Sam has been widely tipped to direct the new James Bond movie and, according to industry sources, is determined to cast Rachel, 40, as one of the villains.
A source said: ‘As soon as Kate and Sam split, he was on the phone asking Rachel if she was interested in doing the movie. Rachel has always been persona non grata in the Winslet-Mendes household, and Kate went ballistic when she heard that Sam wanted to hire her.’
‘Sam has wanted to work with Rachel for ages, but Kate would not allow it. Although they ran in the same Hollywood circles, they avoided each other.’

This joint appearance makes me like Sam and Kate even more, and it makes me question so many of the reports about Sam cheating on Kate. Now, he could have really cheated on her – but if he did, he and Kate are working through it with grace. They look cute with their kids too.

Whatever is going on with them, they’ve kept their private lives pretty private up to this point, so I wish the tabloids would just leave them alone and let them get on with their lives.
I hope they can be on good terms for their kids.

A cordial divorce is the best thing that parents can do for their kids- it’s also nice that Sam is still involved in Kate’s daughter Mia’s life- he’s been her stepfather for almost all of her life and no doubt they have a relationship together.

Actually Rachel Weisz and Kate Winslet kind of look alike, that is if Kate had brunette hair and brown eyes. Considering Rachel is older he probably found her look a like in Kate.

Cordiality is the best way. I’ve been there. My ex and I are still great friends, in fact we get along better now than when were together – no arguing! He has a bunch of kids and five years later, they are all still my family. Some folks think it’s odd (like my current BF, LOL) but it’s really easier and more pleasant. For everyone.
Her family is cute, especially that boy! Wish Kate would quit dying her hair that garish blonde. It’s unbecoming. She is a lovely brunette.
Wow the tabloid made it sound like Kate would have shot Sam to death if the kids weren’t there. Maybe they are “keeping it cordial” because there isn’t anything to fight about. People do get divorced because they just drift apart.
This is the way to handle a divorce. No bad-mouthing of each other to the press. The kids don’t need to read nasty private stuff about their parents in the press, or hear about it from kids at school who’ve read and heard it.
Keep it classy. And, if they ask you questions as adults, that’s different. Then they’ll hear the private stuff straight from the horses’ mouths when they are ready to hear it, if said horses are ready to tell it…

Although I’m surprised to hear she’s older. They look the same age (maybe Rachel looks a tad younger, but she doesn’t really age, so). When I heard he had dated Weisz, I wasn’t surprised he ended up with Kate. It is sort of weird. They just look so alike!

Sometimes people split up and – shocker! – they don’t hate each other, and they don’t allow their mutual differences to prevent them from raising their children. Looks like Sam & Kate are divorcing amicably. The tabloids must be SO sad.
