Jake Gyllenhaal’s man-tanned GQ cover, talks about Heath Ledger

gq-may-jake-gylle-medium

When CB and I first saw the thumbnail of Jake Gyllenhaal’s May GQ cover, we were sort of overcome by how orange he looked. Now that we’ve seen the cover a bit closer, he only looks severely man-tanned, but not as orange as from a distance. Anyway, Jake is gearing up to promote the hell out of The Prince of Persia, the film in which he has a distractingly bad English (?) accent. The full interview hasn’t come online, but here are some highlights:

Jake Gyllenhaal has already proven his versatility by starring in films such as Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead. Now he stars in the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, taking on his first action role and solidifying his status as a superstar. In an interview with GQ correspondent Chris Heath, Gyllenhaal opens up about his relationship with Heath Ledger, his parents’ recent divorce (“I think it takes a lot of courage for my parents to make the decision that they made”), and his love for his family. As for his own life, Gyllenhaal explains, “I’m trying not to keep things so neat. I think I’m realizing my strengths and my faults. I think I’m trying to see what is me…and what is not me.”

Jake Gyllenhaal on working with Heath Ledger: “He was very sensitive. He didn’t always have a sense of performance in his everyday life. He knew who he was. I think actors very often, they know how to present something, and that’s part of their job. I think he was just really sensitive. We often used to do a lot of things together, because people were very interested in him and I think we felt safe together.”

…on how Ledger’s death affected him:“Even when we did Brokeback and stuff, it was like my work was the only thing that mattered to me. It was like I could only understand or define myself through doing that. Life, I didn’t totally understand. And I think I was afraid of life. And I had success in my work, enough success that you could keep going back there. But after that happened…I think I recognized that it was work. And I recognized that this is for real.”

[From GQ Magazine]

Poor Jake. He still gets asked constantly about Heath, which is so weird to me. I get that they were friends and Jake was devastated and heartbroken, but it’s not like Jake doesn’t have a ton of other sh-t going on, you know? He’s made a ton of movies, he’s one of the best actors of his generation, he dates high-profile celebrity women… you’d think interviewers would stop bringing up Heath. Or Jake would find a better way to answer those questions without dragging Heath’s death into every interview.

Anyway… here are a few more photos from the shoot. I think the concept behind it was “dude with a man-tan hangs out in New York”. Fascinating.

sorry, this is going to sound crude… but Heath was just another addict that refused to get help, can we please stop glorifying him, xoxo

  2. Lilias says:

He’s so damn cute. If he didn’t ping my gaydar so loudly I’d have a serious crush on him.

  3. waldemar says:

That last picture isn’t going to stop those gay rumors.

  4. shorty40 says:

Ooooooh he is just delectable!!! Since all you others are hung up on this insane idea that he’s gay, I’ll gladly take him.

  5. Melanie says:

Yes, he may be gay, but he is still so damn cute.

  6. Cece says:

@Bite Me: Well said. He was a great actor but why is everyone categorizing him differently than any other actor who ODed.

  7. Macheath says:

It’s obnoxious to keep talking about a person’s sexuality as if we know personally. No one knows that doesn’t need to know. I’m getting a little sick of it on behalf of Jake; if he is gay so what? If he isn’t, so what? If he wants to stay in the closet, so what?
If we want society to stop treating certain sexualities differently, isn’t it time we butt out of people’s business? I’m just saying.
I just think when it comes to a person preference, it’s better to wait until they define themselves.

  8. gotta be gay says:

attractive? does anyone really think so? come on…this guy looks like he was a premie and has that thin mashed head loook
and his eyes FREAK ME OUT!

    not attractive, sorry
    (and soooo gay!)

  9. Mia says:

    Well said, Macheath! Who cares.

He looks good, and his smile is adorable.

  10. Jazz says:

Are those warheads and nerds in that first picture? I used to love those in school. Er, anyway, yeah Jake’s looking good.

  11. Chelly says:

    @ Gotta be gay:

Yes he is absolutely adorable…lets c ur pic and compare, mmmkay. As for him being gay, who gives a shit if he is or isn’t.

He’s smart, talented, humbled and carries himself exceptionally well. A rare breed these days…

    stop hating.

  12. Lynn says:

    @ Macheath
Um, hello…welcome to a celebrity gossip site. The point of it is to entertain us with news of PEOPLE WE DO NOT KNOW.
    Save the morality lesson, please.

  13. Kat says:

I agree with Lynn. I’m well aware of how tacky and lame it is to question sexuality, but this is an accepted forum for such talk. This is not a politically correct site, it’s celeb gossip.

  14. Bonfire Beach says:

What is getting me is that his jeans are tucked into his sneakers!

  15. gotta be gay says:

    chelly
    lolol that’s funny

  16. buckley says:

So adorable, and a very talented actor who seems mature and down to earth.
    LOVE him.

  17. Red Folder says:

This cover makes him look weird. His head looks ginormous on a twiggy body. ew.

It’s like the person who picked Bieber’s cover for People. Let’s put the pic on here that makes him look weird.

  18. Ursaline says:

He looks like he got tanned doing the Persia movie, but they tinted that photo for the cover. You can see it in the pupils of his eyes where it isn’t actually white.

And how surreal must it be for him to not be able to go to a convenience store to buy gum without getting mobbed by chicks. That’s kind of funny to me.

  19. lolo says:

He’s got a huge bulge in his pants.

  20. Charlie Dia says:

Jake’s got the sweet nice boy next door cuteness going for him, like he’d be a good friend. For me, most of his attractiveness comes from his apparent personality.

As for Heath, it is weird that they still bring him up. I remember him being Heath’s kid’s godfather, though. Did I make that up, or is that actually true?

  21. hoookares says:

Correspondent Bite Me expresses the lack of knowledge that many people have about addiction: “Why doesn’t/didn’t he just get help?” Sometimes rehab doesn’t work; sometimes the pain is too deep to be addressed and dealt with soon enough to save the person’s life. It IS a tragedy when people die of addiction, as much as when they die of cancer. They are not bad, lazy, or weak, just very ill. Is the cancer patient whose tumour is operable a better person than the one whose disease proves terminal?

  22. princess pea says:

I guess I need to adjust my monitor, because he doesn’t look orange to me. I do think he’s dreamy, and his sexuality doesn’t matter at all because it’s not like I’m likely to date him anyway. I’ll just lick the pictures, gently. (Oh, did I say that out loud?)

  23. Stephy2485 says:

Oh so WHAT if he’s gay??
None of US stand a chance either way!! lol

  24. mr. stinky fishface says:

I adore him <3 I would do things to him that would make even the devil blush (and I’m a woman BTW even though my alas is Mr. Stinkyfishface)

And @Bonfire I noticed the same thing, it makes his feet look like clown feet~!

  25. bite me says:

correct me if am wrong, but i never read anywhere about Heath seeeking help…

  26. mogrill says:

Lots of misperceptions in this post. This is the first time Jake has ever been asked about Heath’s death. This is his first major interview since Heath died, and Jake has never publicly spoken about Heath.

So it makes sense that he was asked and that he answered. Let’s just hope that people don’t continue to harp on it.

Many people think Jake’s accent is pretty good. And he doesn’t look orange or even fake tanned.

  27. kelbear says:

Ew that denim looking shirt he is wearing on the cover is hideous!

  28. Macheath says:

    @Lyn
Save me the sarcastic tone, it’s really unnecessary. We can agree to disagree. Regarding a person’s sexuality; I think if people have been spreading rumours for so long and nothing has been confirmed, it goes beyond the fun of gossip. It becomes boring and a lot like the speculator has an agenda for pushing the idea, like it really matters to/affects that person. Every Jake article on here, whether factual or gossip, gets hijacked by “oh he’s gay” “gay, gay, gay” etc.
I’m not moralising for you, I stated my personal ethics regarding the matter. That’s all. =)

  29. PJ says:

Of course Jake is going to be asked about Heath, because everybody knows they worked together and were friends. Jake was probably Heath’s best-known friend, other than his ex-girlfriend.

It’s always very sad when someone who shows so much promise crashes and burns like that.

  30. yungster says:

jake cant pull off the george clooney look-and that tan is soooo fake!

  31. Ophelia says:

@hoookares: I totally agree. Well said.

  32. Anti-icon says:

I really feel for the guy. I don’t care at all if he’s gay or not. He does seem to be very honest with his friends, girlfriends or whatever. He does seem to be a thoughtful actor, which is rare. I like when Heath is discussed, because I lost a son myself, so I like when people remember him with me. It was a thoughtful thing to ask, especially now that time has passed and Jake has had a chance to reflect on Heath’s death. Don’t be mean about a dead person, it really hurts, Kaiser.

  33. lola says:

    gayyyyyy
