If this story is true, Brad is probably fighting for his alpha male position and, as a new father, he feels HE should be the one to protect the family. They are probably very close, he is probably very doting and protective in a fatherly way and over the years of him protecting her and her children they are very close. Brad as the boyfriend wants an element or Im protecting you when I'm with you, even subconciously. Its hard to feel like the man who looks out for his girlfriend and can protect her when that role is already being more than adequately filled. It must be hard for him to let go of or something.
