Alanis Morissette actually loves the paparazzi: “They’re forcing transparency”

Alanis Morissette

Here’s some photos of Alanis Morissette being inducted into Guitar Center’s Historic RockWalk yesterday. For whatever reason, Alanis brought Alicia Silverstone along to provide support in what is essentially a paid-for honor similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Of course, this is a familiar public relations strategy when a musical artist is preparing to drop a record, and Alanis’ next effort arrives in stores next week.

Speaking of carefully refined PR strategies, Alanis has spoken out on how much she actually enjoys dealing with the paparazzi unlike most stars. Her words remind me a bit of January Jones’ sentiment that she doesn’t mind the paps who lurk outside her home because they make her feel “safe” since she lives alone and they essentially function as “the best security system ever.” I imagine that January gets a lot more pap attention than Alanis does though, and the latter expresses a different sentiment for not minding the photogs. Her message? Transparency:

Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette is a rare celebrity who doesn’t hate paparazzi. “I actually like the paparazzi,” she said during a listening party hosted by Target for her new album, Havoc and Bright Lights, at Sonos Studio in LA. “They’re forcing transparency . . . What are we afraid of? Our relationships being dysfunctional?” The singer also discussed fame. “I love all the trappings,” she said. “I’m as shallow as you can be. I love my 6-inch heels.” Her new album drops Tuesday.

[From Page Six]

I get what she’s attempting to say about transparency — that celebrities who choose to earn their living in a the public eye shouldn’t be afraid to be photographed in candid moments if they aren’t doing anything wrong. The complicating factor, however, is when “candid” shots are staged, which happens all too often and a perfect example is Christina Hendricks earning some dough for calling the paps to show off her $23,980 purse. Then there are the staged, fake romances between celebrities and happy-family photo ops. It’s all a muddled mess, and “transparency” doesn’t really work as a descriptor unless one assumes that everyone is being truthful, which obviously isn’t the case.

However, I guess Alanis, who has managed to live a scandal free life thus far, really doesn’t mind the paps at all. Here’s some photos of her with husband Mario “Souleye” Treadway and their son Ever on 5/26. They do look totally cool with those photographers.

Alanis Morissette’s treatise on body image and society: true, preachy or both?

Alanis Morissette has penned a very long essay for iVillage on food and body image. Alanis looks great and just had a baby less than a year ago, but she’s not super tiny like so many other celebrities and she seems to be feeling the pressure. Alanis’ essay was long and I can’t really do it justice even in this extended excerpt. If you have time you can read it here.

Alanis, 37, lost over 20 pounds in 2009 by following a vegan diet and running. She said at the time that she lost weight by “eating like an adult rather than like a 7-year-old at a candy store.” She had her first baby, son Ever, in December of last year. Here’s some of what she wrote about weight and our culture’s obsession with it. It comes across as preachy and in need of editing but I get what she’s saying.

Not much upsets me quite like someone making a declarative and derogatory comment about someone’s weight when they themselves have never struggled with an eating disorder.

To so offhandedly and dismissively reduce someone’s challenging journey to a quip about them needing to eat less hamburgers — or even the opposite, that they “should eat a sandwich” — completely overlooks the deeper and subtler complexities at hand (or at heart and mouth in this case). At the very least it ignores the epidemic that is a society obsessed with a rail-thin aesthetic, where once achieved, derides that very same goal as being sickly and dangerous. What’s a well-meaning perfectionistic girl to do?

If ever there were a double-edged butter knife, this would be it. We of the Hollywood standard-affected variety (read: sadly, the world) work tooth, nail and treadmill to adhere to this number (measuring tape, scale and otherwise) that hovers directly below any that would allow for a cupcake here and there, and when we do, we confusingly elicit either concerned looks of admonishment or compliments on “how fantastic we look.” I remember being at my most thin one day, feeling like I could barely drag my lethargic body around, only to be met with the most compliments I had ever received.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that America is derided for its obesity levels, while also being a country that is obsessed with skinniness. This all-or-nothing approach is endemic to our Western society. Equally, and perhaps more abrasively, when someone inside the struggle with food tips the scales high above the average Hollywood red-carpet star, comments are thrown out about how indulgent and undisciplined they are.

There’s one thing I know from the inside, and it’s that you will never meet a more willful, disciplined, motivated and nutrient-well-read person than someone who is in the throes of disordered eating! The idea that people with food addictions are undisciplined is yet another gross misperception among many. You will rarely meet someone who has a higher capacity for restraint than someone who is struggling with the pain or fear that symptomatically affects weight.

To derisively discuss fat without discussing our feelings and traumas and our sense of disconnection from our souls, ourselves, and each other, is focusing on the effect and not the cause. This oversight perpetuates the self-abuse that fuels this and many other disorders and addictions.

The relationship to food cannot singularly be addressed through a steely structure-by-diets-and-food-plans alone, or a slap on the wrist. Our addressing why we might turn to food beyond sustenance reasons is part of the multi-layered aspects of being human….

See, my fraught relationship with food and fat has always been a cloaked invitation into a more profound kindness to myself (one I have so often ignored). Being kind toward my fragility in the face of a monolithic message of perfectionism and intolerance has not been an easy path — nor, I’m ashamed to say, a consistent one. Writing about it helps.

Fat, unlike other more secretive disorders and addictions, is expressed and exposed on the outside for all to see. That being what it is, we’d do well to see “unwanted weight” as that-which-has-yet-to-be-investigated, rather than as a stamp of our confirmed inadequacies.

So for the love of being part of this larger conversation around addressing the pop-culture-sanctioned-fatism, next time we see someone who is yo-yo dieting and has a tortured relationship with food and their body, rather than make fun of them, I beseech us all to pause and offer a little curiosity for what lurks underneath, and, if appropriate, maybe even move toward it.

Maybe this kindness can slowly make those of us in the heavier-than-Twiggy group feel less alone, less relegated, less abandoned. And perhaps then we can, ever so gently, start to accept (and even love) these deeper and more fragile parts in ourselves that are being repressed and expressed through our bodies and food. And in so doing, deliver us back to the wholeness, essential unique expression, and weight we were born to be.

[From iVillage]

The nature of gossip is to make offhand remarks about people and not think too deeply about it, but I can relate to what she’s saying. I do pay close attention to my weight, and I beat myself up over minor weight gain and feel guilty for small pleasures that I should totally enjoy. This is something that I’ve seen even my skinniest friends do. People who I would assume wouldn’t worry about their weight at all say that they think about it and that they shouldn’t have had that ice cream the other night.

I guess what I’m saying is that what Alanis is talking about here is almost universal, and it sounds like she’s trying to convince herself as much as the rest of us. Loving yourself at any weight can be a bitch, and as elusive as a lower number on the scale can be, self acceptance is even harder to find. So a lot of us do point out other people’s flaws. At the heart of it we’re even more focused on our own.

Maybe she would feel better if she wore cuter clothes though? I’m just saying. She’s hot but this dress isn’t doing her any favors. I probably just proved her point.

Heidi Klum, grungy in a silver cutout dress: edgy or messy?

Here’s my favorite German celebrity, Heidi Klum, 38, in a silver cutout Giles Deacon dress paired with Nicholas Kirkwood python slingbacks. Just glancing at the thumbnails, I thought we were seeing Heidi’s bra through her dress. What we’re seeing is a blue lace bodysuit that’s not a feature of the dress. It’s bizarre, and while the dress is striking with that delicate pattern on silver, there’s too much going on with the lace underneath paired with those busy cutouts. The dress would look cleaner with a solid color under it to highlight the design.

I like the dress in theory and find it kind of amazing, but with those shoes and Heidi’s messy hair and grungy makeup it just doesn’t work. All she had to do was go easy on the eyeliner underneath her eyes and wear a simple black slip. She pushed the envelope though, and this time it just didn’t work.

In contrast, Jennifer Morrison really rocked that billowy Temperley London dress with gold Fendi peep toe heels. I might not like this dress with different styling, but her hair, makeup and those shoes are perfect. Red Carpet Fashion Awards, where we get a lot of our fashion IDs, points out that the runway version of this dress has cut out shoulders. (Have you been watching “Once Upon a Time” on ABC with Morrison and Ginnifer Goodwin? It’s cheesy but I really love it.)

Also in white we have Vanessa Minnillo looking a mess with a Snookie poof and a tight little dress with nude suede heels. I don’t mind messy waves in hair when it looks soft and tousled, but this bedhead wave look has got to go. Minnillo is trying too hard here.

Jane Levy and Cheryl Hines are both on Suburgatory, that new ABC sitcom also co-starring Jeremy Sisto. I watched the pilot and just found it hard to get into. Anyway Jane is cute in this strapless off white lace number, but those shoes have got to go. Cheryl looks ridiculous in that pale peach dress with the asymmetric hemline. Her hair is so bad too.

And I’m going to end with Alanis Morrissette in a black mullet dress with her husband, Soul Eye. These two are adorable together! I’m not a fan of that dress as it it has a bizarre cut and fit, but her shoes are gorgeous and I want them so much. I really like her makeup, but I can’t decide if I like her hair like that or not.

Alanis Morissette & SoulEye take out their 7-month-old Soul-baby, Ever

fp_7713105_morissettealanis_walkfam_vah_00_09

I’ll take one of everything, thanks. I love everything about these photos of Alanis Morissette, her husband Soul Eye (Mario Treadway) and their adorable little Soul-baby (Ever). I love the dog. I love how Alanis and Mario seem engaged with each other. I love Alanis’s sweats too. I love that they look “real”. They look really happy, and I find myself rooting for them. Go Canada! You grow ‘em real nice.

Ever Imre looks like his dad, right? His little face is already full of character. Alanis gave birth in late December last year, which makes Ever a little more than seven months old. Speaking of Alanis giving birth, she took part in Ricki Lake’s new online documentary series, The Business of Being Born. Ricki claims that Alanis agreed to be taped before and after she gave birth. You can read Lake’s interview here – I’m not excerpting that junk, because some of the wording makes me nauseous. If I ever have a baby, I’m going to ask to be unconscious through the last month and the birth. Surely there’s a doctor who will do that, right?

Alanis Morissette welcomes baby boy Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway

101103nr2_morissette_b-gr_01

Alanis Morissette gave birth to a literal Christmas baby! She delivered her healthy baby boy on Christmas Day, and she named him… Jesus? NO. She named him… Ever. Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway. The hyphenated last name is courtesy of Alanis’s husband, SoulEye, better known as Mario Treadway. As for “Ever” – God. I had a good wince, and then I flashed on something else – Milla Jovovich named her baby Ever too. Except Milla has a daughter. Is Ever a unisex name? Milla claimed that it was Scottish, which may be why Alanis chose it…? As far as “Imre” goes, I thought Alanis made it up, or that it was perhaps the name of a vampire in some young adult book, but it seems like it’s a real baby name. Shocking!

Alanis Morissette got a very special Christmas package: a new baby boy, PEOPLE has confirmed.

“Alanis Morissette and Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadway welcomed a baby boy, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway, on Dec. 25th,” says a rep for the new mom. “All are healthy and happy.”

The prolific singer/songwriter, 36, announced her pregnancy in August. She and Treadway, 30, married on May 22 at their Los Angeles home.

Morissette admitted before the birth that the pregnancy had been a surprise, albeit a happy one.

She enjoyed one last send-off before motherhood commenced, and was seen beaming and showing off her bump at a baby shower in October.

[From People]

Well, congratulations to the happy family. I’m glad Alanis had a healthy delivery, and I think it’s awesome that Alanis and SoulEye are so happy and settled. Do you think Ryan Reynolds winced a bit? Probably.

Ryan Reynolds is getting some interesting Alanis & Blake Lively rumors

wenn150348

In the wake of Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds “duh” split, there are mixed signals about who did what to which stripper, and when the whole thing went down, and who is hurt and who isn’t. According to many sources, ScarJo was the one who really wanted out. Even People Mag is going with that version, reporting: “According to a source, Johansson initiated the split. The actress has started apartment-hunting in New York City and is currently in Jamaica with some girlfriends, the source adds.” Wow, way to make it sound like “How ScarJo Got Her Groove Back”. Now Us Weekly has an interesting side note about the split – Ryan has been “reaching out to an ex” since the split. Alanis?

Splitting spouses Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson won’t be spending the holidays with one another — but that doesn’t mean they’ll be alone. The new Us Weekly, out today, reports how Reynolds, 34, and Johansson, 26, are dealing with the “civil” end of their two-year marriage (UsMagazine.com broke the news on Tuesday).

“Ryan has been reaching out to an ex the past few months,” a Reynolds pal tells Us.
Yet it’s purely platonic, the insider insists: “He is seeking comfort, but not in a romantic or sexual way.”

Suddenly single Johansson, meanwhile, has “confided in friends.”

As reported on Tuesday, it was the sexy Iron Man 2 actress who initiated the split. “She’s been unhappy for a while,” the source says, noting that the busy actors were force to spend too much time apart.

In a joint statement released Tuesday, the duo confirmed their plans to divorce, and said, “We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it.”

For much more on the split — including Johansson’s screaming match on the phone days before the announcement, their personality clashes and their last-ditch effort to stay together — pick up the new Us Weekly, on stands today.

[From Us Weekly]

Do you think it’s Alanis? She’s pregnant and, like, engaged to that dude, Soul Eye or whatever…? Why would she mess around with GerbilFace Reynolds?

Oh, but here’s another rumor going around… Ryan and Blake Lively! Ryan and Blake worked together over the summer on Green Lantern (Blake was “the girl” in it). There were a couple of rumors that I remember from a few months ago, but those were just murmurs, not even validated by major tabloid reporting, and Penn Badley was in New Orleans with Blake for part of the time, and ScarJo was with Ryan for part of the time. Now E! News’s Ted Casablanca is trying to clear Blake’s name:

Was it a sexy-overload when Blake Lively got involved?…That’s not the case this time.

Sure, there’s plenty of denial from both camps on what exactly went wrong—saying the relaysh is ending amicably, with “love and kindness,” blah blah blah—and we don’t exactly buy it. But don’t get all gossip girlie yet. Trust, we heard rumblings that everything wasn’t exactly up to wedding vow snuff with Ry and his oft-canoodling Green Lantern costar. Blake’s a flirt—can you blame her? It’s Ryan Reynolds—but her Vice lies in a different department. If that helps you rest easy at night.

Don’t expect this to be the last of the Blyan (hey, it beats Rake) rumors though. The press tour for the lame superhero flick is set to kick off post-New Year’s, and we’re sure the rumor mill will go crazy with B and R spending so much time together.

And, classy as he is, Ry is sure to stay mum on the split, which, of course, will only fuel the tabloid fire.

Blake must be thrilled. Now she gets to play the tabloid tango with two of the hottest Ryan’s in the biz. Ryan Reynolds vs. Ryan Gosling, anyone?

[From E! News]

Interesting… and now that Blake has scored Ryan Gosling, she’s all “GerbilFace what?” Because, let’s face it, The Gosdong is probably much better for her career, honestly. Preferable to being seen as “The tits that broke up ScarJo and Ryan!” But I fear Ted is right… we’ll be hearing more about Blake and Reynolds. They’ll have a movie to promote, and Blake will probably see if she can get some added publicity for leaving one Ryan for another.

Alanis Morissette is expecting a boy, and she’s due around Christmas

101103nr2_morissette_b-gr_03

Just like Jesus! Only Joseph never went by “SoulEye”. Anyway, these are new photos of Alanis Morissette and her husband/baby-daddy Soul Eye (Mario Treadway). She’s really far along! I guess I haven’t been paying that much attention since she announced, but my guess is that Alanis is due within the next few months – oh, I just saw this, she‘s due around Christmas. She’s carrying very well, I think, and she looks so pretty and healthy. Alanis and Souleye just came back from a holiday, likely their “babymoon” – their second honeymoon before the baby comes and destroys their lives (joking). So that’s why Alanis and SoulEye look so tanned and relaxed and happy – they’ve been living it up in some tropical paradise!

Anyway, I know this is old news, but I wanted to use these new photos and I don’t think we reported this when it came out – Alanis is definitely having a boy:

This is one situation where feeling a little blue is acceptable. Singer Alanis Morissette celebrated her upcoming arrival with a baby shower this past weekend and it appears that the first time mother is going to be having a baby boy.

The private soiree was held at a friend’s house in Santa Monica, California and friends and family all arrived with gifts wrapped in blue, with one gift bag exclaiming ‘It’s a Boy!’ on the front.

Alanis, 36, looked stunning as she arrived for the party, covering her growing bump in a black lace dress.

The shower was attended by a group of approximately 25 friends and family. Even Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadway, Alanis’ husband was in attendance. Several hours into the celebrations, an assistant left the house carrying huge gift bags stuffed with presents – many of which were blue in colour. One even had ‘Baby Boy’ written on the front with pictures of trucks and boats, suggesting that Alanis and Mario have already revealed to their friends that their new arrival will be boy.

The assistant loaded the gifts into the happy couple’s car before returning inside the party. Some of the gifts included stuffed animals, a diaper bag and Baby Bjorn rucksack carrier. Alanis and Mario got married in May of this year after dating since 2009.

In August, whilst on the E! show Chelsea Lately, hosted by Chelsea Handler, Morrisette announced that she was five months pregnant with her first child. The baby is due around Christmas time.

[From The Daily Mail]

CB thinks that Alanis is definitely going to name the kid something weird, but you never know. As someone with an unconventional name, she might decide to break the odd-name mold and go traditional. Of course, her husband does go by SoulEye… so anything could happen.

Alanis Morissette confirms pregnancy, by her husband SoulEye

42944, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Sunday July 25 2010. Alanis Morissette and her husband Mario MC Souleye Treadway out in Hollywood together. Photograph: Adrian Varnedoe, PacificCoastNews.com

Back in June, Alanis Morissette announced that she had married her boyfriend of a year, a “rapper” named “SoulEye”. His real name is Mario Treadway, and his sperm is magic. According to Us Weekly, Alanis has confirmed that she’s knocked up. When she and Mario got married, we noted that there was a lot of gossip about an alleged pregnancy, and in recent photos, Alanis looked knocked up – well, her boobs looked bigger, in any case. So this news is not shocking, but still, I’m glad she’s knocked up and I’m happy for her and SoulEye.

You Oughta Know: Alanis Morissette is pregnant!

The singer, 36, announces the happy news in the new Us Weekly, on newsstands now.

In Us’ “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me” section, Morissette lists “I am pregnant!” as No. 25.

Morissette wed rapper Souleye, 30 (real name: Mario Treadway), this past May 22 at their Los Angeles home.

“We’re very excited to embark on this journey with each other,” she wrote on her Twitter page at the time.

[From Us Weekly]

Ooh, it came from my favorite Us Weekly feature, “25 Things”! I swear, that feature is so awesome, I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant. Like Alanis. My guess is that she’s probably well into her second trimester, just because she was already looking pretty pregnant back in May and June. It’s all good! Congratulations to the happy family!

Alanis Morissette marries rapper Souleye – is she knocked up?

Prince Of Persia: The Sand Of Time Premiere held at The Grauman' s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California on May 17th, 2010. Alanis Morissette Fame Pictures, Inc

Alanis Morissette got married! To a “rapper” named Souleye. His real name is Mario Treadway, which actually sounds like a better rap name than Souleye. Imagine what fun you could have with “Tread to the Way, bitches!” Eh. So, I didn’t realize Alanis had a long-term boyfriend, much less a rapper named Souleye, but they’ve been together at least a year, I guess. We don’t have photos of the dude, but Just Jared does, and he’s nice-looking. Oohh… a few weeks ago Perez Hilton had a story about Alanis being maybe-pregnant. She went to the Prince of Persia premiere a few weeks ago wearing a loose gown, and I guess there were rumors. So is this a soul-eyed shotgun marriage?

Alanis Morissette is officially off the market!

The singer and the rapper Souleye, 30, (real name: Mario Treadway) tied the knot in an intimate ceremony with family present at their Los Angeles home on May 22, a source tells PEOPLE.

Morissette’s rep confirms the news. It is the first marriage for the couple, who wed a week before Morissette’s 36th birthday.

[From People]

Granted, I don’t follow Alanis news, but I think this is probably kind of sudden, which does make me suspect a shotgun wedding. If it’s not, my bad, and God bless. Congratulations to Mario and Alanis and wishing them the best. The first thing I actually thought about was what strange taste she has in men – David Coulier and Ryan Reynolds, anyone? Souleye seems relatively normal from here.

Here are more photos of Alanis looking kind of knocked up at The Prince of Persia premiere:

Alanis Morissette on battling depression: running and marijuana help

wenn2629634

It’s probably not a big shocker that singer Alanis Morissette suffers from bouts of depression. Her music and lyrics provide a pretty transparent window into her struggles, don’t they? Alanis addressed her problems with depression in a recent interview, and her methods of battling it might be a bit unorthodox: lots of running, lots of kale, and the occasional joint and glass of red wine.

Alanis Morissette struggled with depression her whole life, but recently, she found an effective antidote: running.

Morissette, 35, tells Runner’s World that “running has made being depressed impossible. If I’m going through something emotional and just go outside for a run, you can rest assured I’ll come back with clarity.”

The Grammy-winning singer, who has run two marathons, tries to live a healthy lifestyle, including eating lots of kale. But she still occasionally indulges “in red wine, and it’s fun to have medical marijuana once in a while,” she says. “I still party and include a little debauchery.”

Always an active athlete – Morissette says she was once a “hard core” swimmer who trained seven days a week – she sometimes struggles with the motivation to run. “But I tie my laces, put on a tight bra and get out there like a little robot. The first 10 minutes are excruciating, but soon I get into the flow.”

Morissette ran the two marathons for charity and did November’s New York City Marathon with Edward Norton on behalf of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. In October, she did the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon through Lassen National Forest in California, representing the National Eating Disorders Association.

“I struggled with eating disorders, especially in my teens,” she says, “but I’ve noticed when I treat my body like an instrument instead of an ornament, my relationship with food completely changes.’

I have a lot of admiration for runners. I’ve tried it, I hated it, so I stick with lower-impact forms of exercise like power walking or swimming. And of course, my favorite: napping. I have friends who rave about marathon training, but that kind of thing would definitely get in the way of my wine drinking/chocolate eating regimen. But from what Alanis says, perhaps you can train like a fiend and still carve out a little naughty time in your life. What I want to know is, how does one procure this medical marijuana for depression? I know that folks with glaucoma and even cancer patients can get it, but I never knew that people with clinical depression were able to. Can someone fill me in on this? Not for me, of course….for a friend. Anyway, it sounds like Alanis is in a really good place in her life these days. I know she was in hiding for a while there after her breakup with Ryan Reynolds, but she seems like she is way over him now.
