Amber Heard bashes closeted gays for “playing into this horribly detrimental lie”

Amber Heard has been with her girlfriend Tasya van Ree for a while. I think Amber has been an out-and-proud lesbian for years, but she got a lot of attention in late 2010 when she verified her lesbianism to After Ellen during a GLAAD event. Since then, Amber’s career has grown – she was on The Playboy Club (before it got canceled), and she’s got a supporting part in The Rum Diary, and she’s probably one of the “Fashion Girls” of the year. My point? Everybody knows she’s a lesbian and it’s probably helped her career, because it helped her stand out from the crowd of interchangeable blondes. So Amber is taking her experience and saying that should be the experience for other gay actors, and that those closeted gay actors should just come out of the closet:

Amber Heard is bashing Hollywood stars who are not open about their sexuality. In Women’s Health magazine, “Rum Diary” star Heard, who stepped out with girlfriend Tasya van Ree at a recent GLAAD event, says, “You can’t respect yourself if you’re afraid to be who you are. It requires bravery to do something no one else around you is doing. But the risk was outweighed by the possibility of playing into this horribly detrimental lie that some in Hollywood perpetuate.”

[From Page Six]

In Hollywood, there are levels of “In The Closet.” There are people like Anderson Cooper, who everybody knows is gay – he has a hot, beefcake boyfriend, they live in a firehouse, and Coop doesn’t “pretend” to be anything he’s not, but he’s never confirmed his homosexuality and no one ever directly asks him about. That’s what’s known as The Glass Closet, and it‘s an issue, and maybe Amber is talking about that? And then there are the gay people who want desperately for people to identify them as straight, who maintain heterosexual relationships or beards, and who probably aren’t even honest with themselves. Like… oh, I don’t know… perhaps ALLEGEDLY John Travolta? Which is the bigger issue in Gay Hollywood? The guy who doesn’t have a problem being gay, he just doesn’t want to talk about it, or the guy who is self-loathing and maintains a façade of heterosexuality?

At the end of the day, I understand the message Amber is trying to send, but I can’t help but think that she’s had it much easier than most, mostly because she’s a really hot lesbian, you know?

Christina Hendricks covers up in red for ‘Trevor Live’: lovely or boring?

Earlier this morning, I covered LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian’s appearance at the Trevor Live event, which benefited The Trevor Project. These are more photos from the event. Let’s start with Christina Hendricks in this red/burgundy ensemble. Are you happy, boob-hating bitches? She’s covered up. Everything is in its place, her glorious rack isn’t falling out. BOOB HATERS. No, really, she looks nice. I don’t mind redheads in red, although I think maybe the look would have been slightly better with a lighter lip color. I also love her husband, The Nerd King of Hollywood. I wonder how much respect he gets for marrying such a bombshell?

In closeups, Fergie looked kind of crazy and cracked-out, but I suspect it’s mostly the makeup and the lighting. As for the dress… hate it. Feathery crackhead.

I approve of Julie Bowen’s black leather sheath dress. It suits her, her hair is fine, and she’s covering up everything that she needs to cover up.

Matt Bomer – so pretty. White Collar comes back next month! HUZZAH.

I like Amber Heard, the bitch can dress and she can work a red carpet, but I feel like this whole look was overkill. She didn’t need to wear a gown to this event, and she didn’t need to be so overdone with her hair and makeup. And for future red carpets, she shouldn’t wear that much eye makeup – she doesn’t need it.

Amber Heard ditched ‘Rum Diary’ co-stars (including Johnny Depp) after work

Amber Heard covers the December issue of Women’s Health, which paints a pretty complimentary picture (as well as a flattering photoshoot) of Amber as a very dedicated actress who also happens to be a voracious reader during her off-duty moments. Also, remember that ridiculous story from In Touch about Heard abandoning her lesbian ways for Johnny Depp? That little rumor gets dispelled in very short order as well:

On Keeping Work At Work: She won over Rum Diary director Bruce Robinson and, it would seem, her costar Johnny Depp. When some of the cast went out to blow off steam after a day of shooting, she would disappear. And at the end of filming, says Robinson, “I remember Johnny and I saying, ‘Jesus, where’s Amber?’” What young actress passes up drinks with a film god like Johnny Depp? One who prefers to make an impression on the job, not off it. But also, one who was in a serious relationship at the time. With a woman.

On Keeping A Fitness Routine: If a routine is broken, it’s easy to backslide into laziness. So keep telling yourself, I want this. Because after you get into a routine, your body will want it. “Once you start working out, you feel better and it becomes something you make time to do,” says Amber. Many women hit the gym to look better, but that can’t be your only motivation. Otherwise, you’ll feel discouraged when you don’t see results fast enough. “It’s about feeling healthy,” says Amber. And that’s something that happens the minute you make a positive change.

On Her Exercise: “I personally run, just because that’s all, for me in time management, running seems to be the most time — accommodating exercise to do. I have recently gotten into tennis, and I also do Pilates in LA. It’s funny, because once you start working to really do an hour, you start feeling so much better that it becomes something that you make time to do. We as human beings always make time for the things we really want. I just feel so much better when I start working out that you just find time to do it.”

On Cooking: Amber prefers to make her own food — even when she works a 90-hour week — so that she can control what ingredients go in (mostly vegetables and lean protein). Amber reads food labels — and if she sees an ingredient she doesn’t recognize, she often leaves the item on the shelf. That might limit you in the snack aisle, but it will lead you to eat fewer processed foods. “You feel better when you’re eating food that retains nutritional value,” she says.

[From Women's Health]

Yeah, this is the usual generic fitness advice that most features in women’s health magazines tend to issue on a monthly basis. Nothing new there. However, the part about Amber “ditching” her co-stars for after-work drinks (and more) is actually pretty cool and interesting. She’s a professional and not a casting couch type, and that leads one to believe that Amber isn’t merely a flash in the acting pan.

However, this article certainly implies that Johnny Depp was completely game for drinking with the cast and crew on a nightly basis, right? That’s not terribly surprising, for he’s been hitting the bottle hard lately, and it shows.

In Touch: Amber Heard nearly abandoned her lesbian ways for Johnny Depp

fp_8142553_chp_rumdiary_france_07_30

Johnny Depp’s sort of been on our collective sh-t list around here lately due to the fact that he really doesn’t seem to be behaving like his usual self in public. Things took a decided turn for the worst with this round of promotion for The Rum Diary. To recap, Johnny compared photoshoots to rape. He whined about the trappings of fame. In response to the poor box office showing for the movie thus far, he stated that middle America doesn’t want intelligent films (and in doing so, he picked on my hometown). And in a particularly awkward moment, he fell over drunk on the street, which led CB to speculate whether he was having relationship problems with Vanessa Paradis.

Meanwhile, In Touch has added fuel to the fire with word from “an insider” that Johnny developed an intense, on-set flirtation with his co-star, Amber Heard, who is a publicly declared lesbian and just happens to have a very serious girlfriend of three years. The article tries to make the case that Amber is “not 100% lesbian.” Really:

As Amber Heard strutted down the red carpet in a skintight gown at The Rum Diary premiere in London, all eyes were fixed on the sexy starlet — including those of her very taken co-star, Johnny Depp. “He immediately greeted her, leaning in to kiss her cheek and whisper in her ear,” an onlooker at the soiree tells In Touch of the pair, who play lovers in the film. “She laughed and rubbed his back. They were definitely flirting!”

And according to an insider, the cozy act wasn’t just for the cameras. Although their reps of course deny they did anything appropriate, “Amber has been saying that she and Johnn had really intense chemistry,” the insider says. At the film’s after-party at New York’s Hiro Ballroom, Amber’s friends were overheard teasing her about her flirtation with Johnny, with one even saying, “Why all know how close you two got on set!” Amber laughed and told them to be quiet, even though she thought it was funny.

One person that might not find this funny — his girlfriend of 13 years, Vanessa Paradis. For years, Johnny has presented himself as a satisfied family man, happy to retreat to his home in France with Vanessa and their kids. But at 48, it looks like the former bad boy is falling back into some dangerous old habits. He’s not only been out late looking wasted at parties in L.A., but he also partied hard with co-star Amber, confides the insider.

In fact, the pair acted like teenagers while making the film. “The set was wild,” the insider claims, adding that with his girlfriend and young children nowhere in sight, Johnny quickly took a liking to gorgeous Amber. “She is a very sexual person,” the insider explains of the 25-year-old. “She is beautiful, and she knows it.” At the many wild after-parties Johnny threw for the cast, Amber always stayed late, flirted shamelessly with him — and showed off her body. “One night, she was dancing very seductively.”

And as the pair reconnect to promote the film on the red carpet at premieres, their partners seem completely unaware. Indeed, Johnny’s still trying to juggle his rock-star side with his stable family-guy shtick with Vanessa — and Amber has no intentions of leaving her girlfriend, Tasya Van Re. “This is what happens on movie sets,” says the insider. If that’s the case, for his next film, Vanessa may want to consider moving into his trailer!

[From In Touch, print edition, November 21, 2011]

So is this report just a bunch of crap? Probably. I think there might be something to CB’s suspicions that Johnny and Vanessa might be having problems because he has been behaving quite oddly lately, which is a good sign that his home life might be off kilter. However, I don’t think there’s much for Vanessa to worry about when it comes to Amber. She’s into girls. Period.

Amber Heard’s Paris ‘Rum Diary’ looks: stunning, amazing & gorgeous?

wenn5751684

Where did Amber Heard come from? Why haven’t we been paying attention to her before now? I mean, some of us (me) paid attention when she officially came out of the closet, but why haven’t we ever really talked about how pretty she is and how she has amazing style? This girl can DRESS. So, these are two new looks from Amber, still on the promotional trail for The Rum Diary, otherwise known as “the cure for the career debacle that was The Playboy Club”. Amber and Johnny Depp were in Paris for a photo call and premiere. Amber wore the floral Reem Acra for the photo call, and the navy Stella McCartney for the premiere. I love both, but the Stella dress especially – great cut. Look at the way it hugs Amber’s crazy body:

wenn3600245

It looks great from the back too – I’m actually not crazy about fully-exposed backs. This is the perfect amount of skin on an otherwise sexily conservative dress.

wenn3600244

By the way, I don’t even want to talk about Johnny Depp. You know I’ve rarely, if ever, get hot for him, so I’m happy to welcome so many of his newly-disgruntled former fans in my corner. I am happy to see that he’s de-bloated some, though. And I did like him The Tourist, damn it. Hopefully, The Rum Diary will die a quick death and Johnny will go away for a bit and realize that he’s not invincible, and that he can’t just say whatever buttheaded thing comes to mind.

Amber Heard versus Eva Green: who’s the bigger bombshell?

wenn3590759

The more I see Amber Heard, the more impressed I am with her style skills. Either this girl has a righteous stylist, or Amber just has an other-worldly sense of what works on her body. I’m not saying that Amber is super-fashion forward, or that I want what she’s wearing. I’m saying that I wish I looked like her so I could dress like her. Her body is AMAZING. And the clothes she wears only accentuate and emphasize how crazy that body is. The face is… well, she’s giving me ScarJo vibes lately. Remember when Scarlett went too blonde for a while? Amber is doing that.

wenn3590848

Anyway, these are photos of The Rum Diary UK premiere in London last night. Amber wore this shiny Alessandra Rich that could have easily looked cheap, but it’s tailored perfectly and her insane body makes the dress really, really work. She’s so sexy. I don’t know how popular this movie is going to be, but I hope Amber’s career is all uphill from here. I don’t even know if she can act. I just want her to go far so she’ll keep getting invited to red carpets.

wenn3590835

wenn3590758

I’m also including photos of Eva Green, who was at the premiere because…? I don‘t know, maybe she‘s friends with Johnny Depp. I haven’t written about Eva since that post about how I prefer to write about Eva so much more than the Kardashians. It’s still true, but all of you Kardash-haters out there just have to realize that this week was an anomaly for the excessive Kardashian coverage, because of Kim’s divorce. And no one is forcing you to read and comment on the Kardashian posts anyway! If you feel that strongly about it, take the effort to read and comment about other people, and soon the Kardashians will be phased out, you know? Here’s hoping. As for Eva, I love her beautiful face, and she’s got a killer body too. I’m not in love with the dress, though. I hate when skirts have those dual slits in front – it’s totally car wash to me. I like Eva’s leopard-print shoes, though.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Pucci at the Film Awards: hot or bizarre?

fp_8070915_rij_hollywood_aw
Kaiser has already covered some of the fashion at last night’s Hollywood Film Awards, including Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan and George Clooney and Stacy Keibler. She’ll be mentioning Anne Hathaway and Emma Stone in a moment. Here we have a few of the other celebrities that lit up the red carpet. No one really impressed me except for Julianne Hough and Viola Davis.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley tried to work a intricately beaded Pucci gown and kind of failed, in my opinion. She’s so hot and she’s gotten it absolutely right so many times in the past. It’s kind of refreshing to see her with messy pulled back hair, minimal makeup and a dress that makes her look more like a rare exotic bird than one of the hottest models around. Even the chick who gets to sleep with Jason Statham looks like crap once in a while.

fp_8070918_rij_hollywood_aw

hollywood_film_awards_037_w

Elle Fanning, still just 13 years old(!), wore a very conservative off white Valentino dress that could pass as a tablecloth. She accented the look with a Heidi braid. It’s kind of sweet for a kid and while I’m not a fan of the dress, I like that she’s covered up.

fp_8070944_rij_hollywood_aw

fp_8070946_rij_hollywood_aw

Julianne Hough really shone in a tight beige dress with a sequin swirl pattern and a deep v-neck that went nearly to her belly button. In theory I don’t like this dress and find her matchy shoes too much. On her though it worked and she looked amazing. Love her hair and makeup.

hollywood_film_awards_078_w

hollywood_film_awards_077_w

Amber Heard vamped it up in a blue silk dress with a dramatic bodice slit. I thought we were about to see sideboob, but it didn’t materialize. As we’ve seen in the past from her, the color seems a little off, but I think it’s more her hair color this time than the colors in her dress. Her hair and makeup are phenomenal though.

hollywood_film_awards_094_w

hollywood_film_awards_097_w

hollywood_film_awards_095_w

Busy Phillips was goofy in an updo and a tight black dress with a sequin boob window. I still love her though. She always looks like she’s having so much fun and would be a blast to be around.

fp_8070873_rij_hollywood_aw

fp_8070872_rij_hollywood_aw

Bryce Dallas Howard does not get a pregnancy pass for this mess. She has no boob support, the dress looks like a nightie, and she may have gone for the soft wave look with her hair but the result is no better than an air dry. Her jewelry and shoes look cheap too. Get it together, Bryce!

fp_8070896_rij_hollywood_aw

Sara Rue showed off her body by Jenny Craig in a purple formfitting gown that was the same shade as Stacy Keibler’s dress. She lost a lot of weight and looks different due to that of course, but what did she do to her face? I get the impression that she had some work done.

hollywood_film_awards_021_w

hollywood_film_awards_022_w

Viola Davis was one of the best dressed of the night in this off-the shoulder jade flowing gown that she accessorized perfectly. She’s so well put together without going overboard.

Katherine Heigl at the Elle Women in Hollywood event: much improved or manic?

fp_8036693_rij_elle_women_5
We’re covering the fashion of last night’s Elle’s Women in Hollywood event in three different posts as there were so many celebrities there. Kaiser has already mentioned Jennifer Aniston’s hot dress along with some of the other big names, Like Reese Witherspoon and Evan Rachel Wood. I’ll be covering some of the other celebrities here along with my favorite TV personalities.

First off we have Katherine Heigl in a beaded little black dress. It’s a bit “mature” looking, but it’s not bad at all for her. She looks very good, if kind of crazed here. I like what she’s done with her short hair too. Her husband Josh Kelly came with her and looked almost as thrilled to be there. After seeing these photos, I’m convinced that things are fine with them.

fp_8036686_rij_elle_women_5

fp_8036689_rij_elle_women_5

Jayma Mays in a one-shoulder ruched blue dress with ruffle detail. Compared to some of the horribly frumpy things she’s worn on the red carpet, this was a vast improvement. Her hair is gorgeous and that sideswept looked is popular now. Her eye makeup is a little overdone, but overall this was a win for Jayma.

fp_8036647_rij_elle_women_1

fp_8036646_rij_elle_women_1

Busy Phillips looked a little goofy with that very tight, very high little bun on her head. I want to give her a pass for just looking so happy and cute though. She’s adorable in this very simple black dress paired with silver jewelry. What was she thinking with those purple shoes?

fp_8036644_rij_elle_women_0

fp_8036643_rij_elle_women_0

Matthew McConaughey’s squeeze Camila Alves had her pose on in a navy blue polka dot retro-style dress. She used to be a model, so I guess that could explain her sourpuss face. I love the dress, hair and makeup. The shoes and purse aren’t my favorite.

fp_8036657_rij_elle_women_2

fp_8036655_rij_elle_women_2

Erika Christensen of “Parenthood” looked really drab. I love her on that show, she’s one of my favorite actresses. What happened to her here? I wear more makeup and do more to my hair to go to the store on a daily basis. She’s a Scientologist I’m sorry to say, but she was raised in it. Also, here’s her date:

fp_8036710_rij_elle_women_7

fp_8036709_rij_elle_women_7

fp_8037747_christensen_erik

In contrast, Gillian Jacobs from another one of my shows, “Community,” was way overdone. The bottom half of that dress would be cute with a nice solid color panel at the top, but the contrasting patterns and colors are just ridiculous. Paired with that makeup and poofy hair and she looks unhinged.

fp_8036640_rij_elle_women_0

fp_8036478_rij_elle_women_0

Amber Heard, Johnny Depp’s costar in the upcoming Rum Diaries, was a study in color. I’m perplexed at how an otherwise gorgeous girl can pair a form-fitting pepto pink dress with matte scarlet lips, brown eyeshadow, too-yellow hair and black t-strap heels and end up looking like this. It’s like all the lovely parts are there, but they don’t work together.

fp_8036700_rij_elle_women_6

fp_8036698_rij_elle_women_6

Elizabeth Olsen wore a silver tent-like Calvin Klein gown. It doesn’t do much for her, but I love how genuinely happy she looks here, and her makeup is so striking.

fp_8036668_rij_elle_women_3

fp_8036667_rij_elle_women_3

Abigail Breslin is still only 15! I can’t believe it, as I had to look it up and assumed she was 17-something by now. She had on a very tasteful loose orange dot dress paired with a canary colored clutch and nude heels. She’s wearing too much makeup for her age, but she looks cute here.

fp_8036760_rij_elle_women_1

fp_8036759_rij_elle_women_1

Naomi Watts in a nude-colored v-neck gown. The color washes her out, but she looks so hot. I love her hair and makeup, except her mascara is really clumpy. That’s happened to me when I let a makeup counter person do my mascara. I expect Naomi had something similar happen with her makeup artist.

Johnny Depp at ‘The Rum Diary’ premiere: still douchey or still hot?

wenn3557193

These are photos from last night’s LA premiere of The Rum Diary. Johnny looks pretty nice here, I think. I like his hair this length, and I like that he put on a suit and actually tried. The Rum Diary is a passion project for Depp – that much I got from his VF interview.

Speaking of, I know a lot of you are over Johnny Depp these days, what with his support of Roman Polanski, and then his douchey, out-of-touch, and offensive comments in Vanity Fair about how photo shoots equal rape. Well, I read the whole interview, and while Johnny totally said those things and he was completely right in apologizing for it, I also think that he wasn’t being interviewed by the best person. The dude interviewing him was an old friend and godfather to his son. And the whole interview was rather lacking as far as “Johnny being an interesting person.” It’s been explained to me time and time again why he’s so interesting and cool, but time and time again, he fails to reveal that side of himself in interviews, and part of the problem is that Johnny rarely gets interviewed by anyone other than his sycophantic friends. Whenever he was asked about anything more than superficial, Johnny muttered “I dunno” or “I don’t care.” It was tedious.

wenn3557389

wenn3557197

I’m also including photos of Johnny’s female costar, Amber Heard. I think Amber is really pretty on her own, but in these photos she’s giving me Scarlett Johansson vibes. Right? The dress is Elie Saab, and it’s very pretty – nay, stunning – on her. My only quibble is with her hair – it’s too blonde, and there should be some roots or low-lights, because these extreme blonde is washing her out.

And here’s some Aaron Eckhart. He looks great.

Amber Heard is a lesbian, just FYI

wenn3126043

I heard over the weekend that actress Amber Heard came out as a lesbian (or maybe she just verified it), but I struggled for a moment to understand who exactly Amber Heard was. Here’s her IMDB page – I’ve seen her in Pineapple Express, although I have no memory of her role in that movie whatsoever. And that’s all I’ve ever seen from her filmography. Huh. Anyway, Amber Heard went to some GLAAD event over the weekend… with her girlfriend. And now everyone is like “ZOMG a C-list actress is a lesbian!” Is it really that scandalous? Here’s Amber’s interview (at the event) with After Ellen:

At tonight’s celebration of 25 years of GLAAD, AfterEllen.com was on the red carpet and talked for a few minutes with actress Amber Heard (The Stepfather, The Joneses, Pineapple Express), who spoke openly (and happily) about her choice to come out and, as she eloquently said, not be “a part of the problem” by staying in the closet. Heard, who was joined by her partner, Tasya van Ree, was also clearly honored to have the privilege of presenting the Founder’s Award to GLAAD/LA Founder and First Executive Director Richard Jennings during the event, held at Harmony Gold in Los Angeles.

AfterEllen.com: What does it mean to you to be a part of this event tonight?
Amber Heard: I’m honored to be a part of GLAAD. I’ve long been a fan and long wanted to be a part of an organization as powerful, as influential and as important as GLAAD. I am acutely aware of the role that the media plays in influencing public opinion and influencing society, and with that awareness comes the burden of responsibility.

I think when I became aware of my role in the media, I had to ask myself an important question “Am I part of the problem?” And I think that when millions and millions of hard-working, tax paying Americans are denied their rights and denied their equality you have to ask yourself what are the factors that are an epidemic problem and that’s what this is. Injustice can never be stood for. It always must be fought against and I just was sick of it being a problem. Because I’m in the media I was aware of it and I luckily was introduced to GLAAD and am honored that they wanted me to be a part of tonight because it is such an important organization. I am so impressed with all the important work that they are doing and I couldn’t see a more important cause to be aligned with.

AE: The media is obsessed with labels and labeling people. As an out actress, is that something that you’re concerned about or is it something you’re moving past because of GLAAD?
AH: It’s hard. I think GLAAD is one of the many reasons that I, as a 24-year-old, can come out. I think that organizations like GLAAD make that possible because if it weren’t for opinions being changed, people being influenced, people being engaged to do the right thing, then there would be no prerogative for anyone to come out. Like I said, I can’t be a part of the problem. I hate the idea of a label just as much as anyone else but I’m with who I’m with, I love who I love and I’m if not a better actress than I was yesterday and my personal life should have no effect on that. I think that the injustice of people staying in the closet is more than I can bear with a clear conscience and I couldn’t sleep at night if I was a part of that problem, if I was part of the lies.

I personally think that if you deny something or if you hide something you’re inadvertently admitting it’s wrong. I don’t feel like I’m wrong. I don’t feel like millions of people are wrong because they love who they love or they were born how they were born. I’m proud to be on the right side of history and I can do nothing more than encourage people to look at their lives and ask “What side of history am I on? Am I doing the right thing or am I doing the wrong thing?” I look at speeches by Martin Luther King and I cry when I read the story of Rosa Parks at the back of the bus, and I can’t help but think if I was in that era what side of history would I be on? Would I be marching on the side of equality or would I be one of these horrible people spreading hate and bigotry?

It’s clear from a person that was born in the ’80s to decide what part of history they’d be on. It’s clear for someone like myself that’s fairly educated and fairly well-rounded and fairly enlightened to be able to say “I would never be on this side of bigots and hatred. I would never be on that side!” But then we have this situation here in my generation, where tons of young people haven’t woken up to the call that this is our generation’s civil rights movement. This is the forefront of human rights. You have to ask yourself what side are you going to be on and if we’re too scared to come out and say who we are, we’ll never get anywhere.

AE: It’s great to see you here with your partner. It’s great that you can do that and you don’t have to be here with a beard!
AH: She’s so beautiful. I mean, you’d have to be crazy not to want to go out with her!

[From After Ellen]

So, Amber is like Rosa Parks, I guess. No, I jest, I understand what she was saying. She’s saying that she wants to stand up for what’s right, and now is the time to be vocal. I get it, and good for her. Here are some more photos of Amber, and her girlfriend Tasya Van Ree.
