Anne Hathaway has gone completely vegan, even with on-screen shoewear

Poor Anne Hathaway. Have we forgiven her yet? I’m dying to forgive her! But that’s just me – I’m a Hathaway Apologist. Yes, I find her annoying and full of it, but I think she’s talented and I enjoy her. Sometimes I enjoy yelling at her. Anyway, today we’re going to hear about some of Annie’s latest Oscar campaign moves. She’s stopped talking about her poor, maligned vadge (sort of) and she’s moved on to other things… things that will hopefully win her that Oscar! First off, you know these hideous, terrible, atrocious Tom Ford “boots” that she wore during her beav-flash? They were completely animal-free. Annie is all vegan, all cruelty free now:

Anne Hathaway wowed onlookers when she stepped out on the red carpet of the Les Misérables premiere in her strappy leather bondage boots. But if you wanted to recreate her look at home, you can think again because not only did Anne’s killer boots come with a four figure price tag, but they were custom-made with faux leather to keep in line with her Vegan roots.

Hathaway showed her commitment to cruelty-free ethics when she stepped out in head-to-toe spring 2013 Tom Ford, along with the custom-made vegan version of his gladiator dominatrix boots. And it wasn’t just her red carpet footwear that she demanded adhered to her morals.

According to Footwear News, all of her character Fantine’s shoes had to be custom-made to be vegan for the actress.

‘[Hathaway]‘s vegan, so we couldn’t use any animal materials on the shoes for her character Fantine,’ costume designer Paco Delgado told the magazine. ‘We had to find very specific shoemakers to create lace-up boots and ankle boots.’

Hathaway first became a hard-core vegan after her role The Dark Knight Rises.

Speaking to USA Today at the time, she said: ‘After I finished the rooftop fight, I ate four slices of pizza and split a bottle of red wine with my guy. I hadn’t eaten like that in months. I felt so ill. By the time the movie finished, I decided to give veganism a try. You can’t go hog-wild as a vegan.’

[From The Mail]

Basically, she’s talking about her diet and her weight loss again, and she’s wrapping it up with her cruelty-free lifestyle. I’m not really sure if this part of her Oscar campaign, but it probably wouldn’t hurt, I guess. It actually reminds me of Natalie Portman’s Black Swan Oscar campaign – Portman kept talking about her veganism (and how she gave it up partially while pregnant) around that time too.

But, I know for sure that this next story is about Annie’s Oscar campaign. Anne just admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that she had a “secret” broken arm earlier this year:

“I broke my arm and kept it a secret… I broke it when I finished Les Miserables, just before Batman press came out. I fell off my bicycle and that’s how I broke it and when my husband (Adam Shulman) went to pick up my pain meds (medication), the pharmacist was like, ‘Catwoman can’t ride a bike?’ So I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t let anyone know about this.’ I managed to keep it a secret. Until now.”

Hathaway even had to undergo surgery, but she outfoxed reporters on her press tour by taking off her splint before interviews, revealing, “I had to have surgery, so I didn’t have to have a cast, I just had a removable splint.”

However, the beauty is no stranger to broken bones – the accident-prone star has previously fractured her pinky, coccyx, and left arm – twice.

[From Contact Music]

I really don’t understand why it was a big deal to let people know she had broken her arm? WTF? It wasn’t like there was an insurance issue – she clearly states that it was AFTER she finished filming Les Mis. There’s no insurance issue. She wasn’t working. So why would she need to “hide” her injury, unless it was simply to let people know NOW that she aches and breaks bones for her ART? Incidentally, do you think it’s a coincidence that she broke something shortly after going vegan and starving herself for Les Mis? She’s going to end up like Gwyneth Paltrow – vitamin deficient and with early-onset osteoporosis.

Last thing – Anne was Chelsea Lately last night. UGH, I wish celebrities would stop with Chelsea Handler, but all of Chelsea’s guests tend to be associated with CAA, so there you go. Here’s some video:

Is Anne Hathaway worried that her biscuit-flash will cost her the Oscar?

Hilariously, my mother was very upset about Anne Hathaway’s beav shot last week. My mom is a big Hathaway fan – I think a lot of “moms” are, right? Moms think Annie is classy, ladylike, princess-y. They think she’s a good role model for young women. But role models aren’t supposed to flash the beav. My mother asked, “Was it on purpose? Did she want people to see? Why wasn’t she wearing her drawers? What did it look like?” Seriously, she asked all of those questions. I think a lot of asked those questions. But has the “Annie flashed the beav for her Oscar campaign” narrative been established? Or do we still want to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that she didn’t flash it on purpose? I don’t know. But “sources” claim that Anne is really worried that her beav is going to cost her an Oscar!!

Anne Hathaway, 30, is known as classy, elegant actress, so everyone was shocked when she decided to go commando and embarrassingly exposed her bare crotch at the NYC premiere of Les Misérables on Dec. 1o. A source close to the situation tells Hollywoodlife.com that Anne is afraid that this momentary mishap may have a lasting impact.

“She’s been fighting all of her life to be seen as a ‘serious’ actress, and this could make older stars see her as just another Hollywood ‘pop tart’, like Lindsay Lohan.”

Not only is Anne fearful of losing her reputation as a serious actress, she’s also worried that the malfunction will swipe her chances for an Oscar.

According to the source, “Anne is really hoping for an Oscar for Les Misérables, and she’s worried that this misstep will hurt her credibility as an actress.”

The source points out one reason Anne is so distraught over her commando catastrophe is because she is afraid it has cast a shadow over a project that is very special to her.

“The nudity doesn’t bother her — she’s been naked on camera before — but this musical has meant so much to her and her family [her mother acted in it]. She would hate for such a misstep to derail her in the eyes of Academy voters.”

The source adds, “In all, it would be a shame if this is true, because she’s brilliant in the role.”

[From Hollywood Life]

Whether or not it was a stunt, I do think Anne’s poor beav probably did hurt her. I think a lot of Academy voters think like my mom – Anne is classy and ladylike, and “she should know better.” Plus, I think Anne handled it the wrong way, sort of. I think more people would have liked to see her laugh it off, you know? It’s JUST a beav. It’s not like she got all coked up and punched someone. It’s not like a DUI. It’s not like she screamed at some extra. She just went commando under an ugly gown. No biggie.

Here are some photos of Anne arriving at the Chateau Marmont yesterday. Considering the way she’s dressed, I’m assuming she was there to do press for Les Miserables (as opposed to going to the Marmont to act like a crackie). Note the way Anne exists the car. No beav shots!! Well done.

Does anyone else think Hugh Jackman’s Oscar chances are looking really good?

These are some nice photos of Hugh Jackman’s Star on the Walk of Fame ceremony yesterday. Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Les Miserables director Tom Hooper all showed up for Hugh, which is nice. I’m also including pics of Hugh’s wife Deb and their kids. I especially like Hathaway’s vibe here – more Audrey Hepburn and less Beave-Flash McOscarCampaign. Note: I would hate this dress if Michelle Williams wore it (and you know Michelle will wear it). But on Anne, I love it.

Anyway, as I’m sure you’ve seen, Hugh and Anne both got Golden Globe and SAG nominations for their Les Mis roles. I think it’s looking pretty good that they will both get Oscar nominations. Hugh kind of snuck up on everyone, right? Back when I was reading early predictors and indicators of who would get what Oscar nomination, it never felt like Jackman was going to be a big contender. Anne was, of course – her role had “Oscar-bait” written all over it. But it feels good to think Hugh Jackman will be getting his first Oscar nomination, not for playing against type in some moody, cynic drama, and not for some stunt-casting supporting role either. Hugh is a song-and-dance man, an old-fashioned entertainer. I love the idea of Hugh being recognized for a lead role in a big musical, don’t you?

And that’s what makes me think… maybe Daniel Day-Lewis’s biggest competition for Best Actor is Hugh Jackman. I’m starting to get the same feeling that I had when I saw all of the pieces coming into place for Colin Firth two years ago. I’m just looking at the odds, the way the campaigns are shaping up, the buzz, trying to predict how the “Hollywood establishment” will be looking at these films. Hugh has a lot of love in Establishment Hollywood. So does DDL. But DDL already has two Best Actor Oscars. And Hugh doesn’t have any, and this will be his very first nomination. It just feels like… it might be right for Hugh. *chills*

As for poor Annie and her Oscar Campaign Beave, I don’t even know. I think her campaign just came too hard, too fast and too soon. Like, she didn’t ease into it, she didn’t show up with enough humility, I guess. I think we’re in the midst of a Hathaway Backlash. But! During the awards season, things move so fast. The backlash will be over in a few weeks, just in time to root for her at the Globes! I think Anne is coming into the season as “the one to beat” and it will be interesting to see how Sally Field and Helen Hunt and (COUGH!!!!) Nicole Kidman play their hands. Oh, and don’t forget about little Amy Adams. The Academy loves her too!

Anne Hathaway devastated after she flashed the paparazzi: deliberate or mistake? (sfw)

Yesterday a photo came out of Anne Hathaway getting out of an SUV outside her NY Les Mis premiere and flashing the paparazzi. She wasn’t wearing any drawers, basically. (DListed has the censored version here. The uncensored version is easily Googled if you’re interested.) We didn’t run that story because we didn’t have the pics and because the ad companies don’t like it when we point out celebrities showing their goods. The flash looked deliberate to me, but you know me, I’m a cynical bitch. I was blogging in the Fall of 2006 when Paris Hilton schooled Britney Spears on how to show the goods to photographers. (She didn’t train her very well, it was all too obvious and Britney did it on at least five separate occasions. I’m not exaggerating.) Also guilty of this practice was Lindsay Lohan, with at least two different flash moments that I recall.

My point is that Anne’s dress was hiked up higher than it looked like it should have been, and the photo really reminded me of Britney, Lindsay, and Paris circa 2006. It was reminiscent of a played-out move, but it was possibly a mistake. Maybe she didn’t want any undie lines in that fug Tom Ford number with the bondage shoes, and maybe it didn’t occur to her to get a string bikini or a thong because she assumed she would be covered. She allegedly told a Vanity Fair writer at a luncheon that she was devastated by the photo. If it went down like that she must be mortified.

The “Full Hathaway” revelation was a shocking break from her flawless looks, and came hours after the actress left a taping of the “Late Show with David Letterman” looking stunning in red. During a luncheon Tuesday at the Four Seasons, Hathaway was overheard moaning about her mishap in the black taffeta Tom Ford gown.

“I was getting out of the car and my dress was so tight that I didn’t realize it until I saw all the photographers’ flashes,” she told Vanity Fair writer Ingrid Sischy.

“It was devastating. They saw everything. I might as well have lifted up my skirt for them.”

The “Devil Wears Prada” beauty, well on her way to being a Meryl, accidentally pulled the Britney when she attempted to seamlessly exit her black SUV with the help of a bodyguard who reached for her delicate hand upon arrival. But — oops! — as she swung both of her bondage-inspired boots toward the curb, her thigh-slit dress fell open and she flashed her lady parts.

Was her longtime stylist Rachel Zoe behind the mishap? Or was Hathaway just trying to avoid lines under her slim-fitting gown? Alexis Bryan Morgan, executive fashion director at Lucky magazine, says the incident was “shocking and unfortunate” because Hathaway is always “very pulled together.” Morgan said Hathaway could have avoided the problem.

“It’s so much better to be caught in Spanx,” Morgan says. “If you’re not looking for shaping I recommend the Commando brand. It’s hands down the best. It’s seamless and raw cut.” She also recommends Spanx Simplicity High-Waisted Girl Short.

“The fabric is slinky and seamless, and if your dress flies up you’re not naked,” she says. “Her dress had ruching, I don’t know why she felt she needed to go commando.”

If Hathaway still prefers going pantyless, Patricia Fitzpatrick, founder and director of the Etiquette School of New York, offers a solution: “Even Kate Middleton has shown her underwear with her legs spread apart. To prevent it, before you get out, you put your knees together and then you bring them up and out and swing them over the side of the car out to the curb.”

“Knees together girls!” Fitzpatrick says. “When you’re sitting, you sit with your knees touching.”

A classy recovery helps also.

“Do like Kate Middleton. Don’t even answer questions about it and go on your way if it happens.”

And she threw in one final solution: “Wear underwear.”

[From The NY Daily News]

I love how the NY Daily News got an etiquette expert to comment on this. It’s totally obvious advice to wear some knickers and yet their expert plays it straight with advice on specific Spanx to wear! It’s awesome. Well maybe it’s true, maybe Anne didn’t mean for this to happen. This is Anne Hathaway we’re talking about, she’s known as being classy and very professional. She’s been all over the place lately though, and at this point I wouldn’t put it past her to stage this. (Again, I’m cynical and have seen a lot, so take my opinion for what it is.) The verdict is still up in the air, I think.

Anne Hathaway wears Nina Ricci to celebrate Hugh Jackman: safe & pretty?

Here are some photos from last night’s Museum of Moving Images Salute to Hugh Jackman. Hugh’s BFF Anne Hathaway was there of course, as was Hugh’s wife Deborra-Lee Furness and Hugh’s Les Mis costar Eddie Redmayne, who grows cuter by the day. I’m including photos of all of them. Let’s discuss Anne first! She wore this Nina Ricci Spring 2013 dress which… I like. I don’t love it. I feel like this is “safe” and it’s definitely in Anne’s comfort zone. It’s weird to me that this came one night after Annie’s controversial head-to-toe Tom Ford look. Do you think this is a conscious choice by Anne and by her stylist Rachel Zoe? To do such a strong, controversial look for the premiere and then one night later do something much more “normal”. And this – more than anything else – is why I want Anne to be nominated for an Oscar. Because of the awards season fashion.

As for Hugh… I’m starting to feel the groundswell of support for Hugh, aren’t you? The reviews are coming in, and many critics have mixed feelings about many of the people involved… except for Hugh. Hugh is getting some of the best reviews of his life. Hugh carries the film, and apparently he carries it well. I do think that the time has come for Hugh to be rewarded with an Oscar nomination. I don’t know if he’ll actually get the Best Actor award or if he SHOULD win, but I would be so, so pleased to see him get a nomination.

Anne Hathaway in head-to-toe Tom Ford at the ‘Les Mis’ premiere: tragic or sultry?

OH DEAR LORD. These are pics from last night’s Les Miserables premiere in NYC. This post is just for “the ladies of Les Mis” in case you’re like “OMG where is Hugh Jackman?!” Because CB is already talking about him, and we need to just talk about fashion and how these ladies are presenting themselves and how it’s just so, so terrible. Let’s start with Anne Hathaway, who is pretty much guaranteed an Oscar nomination this year, and from the looks of it so far, she’s in it to win it. Is this the right way for an Oscar hopeful to present herself?!!?!?

Annie is wearing head-to-toe Tom Ford. The dress is Ford, the boot things (?) are Ford as well. At first glance, I liked the dress by itself, but as I examined it closely… no. No, I don’t care for it. The silhouette is good, but the cut is too narrow along the thighs and Anne looks like she might be having walking issues. Plus, there’s the matter of the giant slit (to show off those horrible boots) and the built-in thing on the back. I’m sorry, Tom Ford. This is a FAIL. Also: I dislike Anne’s makeup so much here. It’s too strong.

But is Anne’s look worse than Amanda Seyfried’s? The truth is, I don’t hate Amanda’s Alexander McQueen dress. It’s fine. It’s nothing special, but it’s okay. But does her makeup artist hate her? And does her hair person despise her? What has she done to piss off her style team? I think Amanda is very pretty, but the makeup and the hairstyle emphasizes the wrong stuff about her “look”.

And here’s Samantha Barks in Stella McCartney. A rare victory for Stella, I think, mainly because she just copied a years-old Ralph Lauren design.

Jennifer Lawrence co-stars with snake in NYT video: ‘art’ or pretentious & silly?

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence appears in the latest New York Times Magazine pictorial, which appears to highlight several of this year’s Oscar hopefuls (along with some assorted past nominees and winners) in a “Hollywood Heroines” issue. In this photo, Jennifer is holding a snake and wearing some more overwrought hair extensions. I’m starting to really resent this hair-extension trend because it’s turning my fabulous JLaw into yet another trend follower, and she’s essentially anything but that in most other aspects.

To accompany the shoot, Jennifer stars in a semi-creepy video called “Wide-Awake” that features her basically going out to water the lawn (in an atypical outfit) and then getting attacked by the garden hose and making friends with a snake. Strange. Here’s the clip:

Yes, this is an “artistic” video but Jennifer seems to be so above talking about “art” and the “craft” in her interviews, so I’d like to see her just kick back and do something unexpected in such a video. Maybe like breakdancing. I think she’s be down with breakdancing. I don’t know. I’m sure that this NYT feature is merely part of her Harvey Weinstein-directed Oscar campaign, and she’s just playing along. Poor girl.

Naomi Watts also appeared in the shoot with blue tears streaking down her face. Beautiful but weird, right?

Naomi Watts

Naturally, Anne Hathaway is willingly campaigning for her Oscar here. That’s basically all she does these days.

Anne Hathaway

Keira Knightley breaks away from her Anna Karenina (which I still haven’t seen yet) costuming to sit in a bizarro garden. Keira looks lovely but like she cannot figure out the photographer’s plan here. She’s not the only one.

Anne Hathaway reveals how she lost 25 lbs for ‘Les Mis’: ‘I just had to stop eating’

Anne Hathaway Hugh Jackman

Anne Hathaway’s Oscar campaign for Les Miserables has begun in earnest even though it’s already been fairly evident during her recent interviews that she’s been ramping up for the inevitable weight-loss discussion. Kaiser totally it called during a discussion of Anne’s Access Hollywood interview when she said Anne was saving the big stuff for a better outlet. Now, the moment has arrived in a new Hollywood Reporter interview where Anne begins to reveal more than just cursory details of oatmeal paste. It’s almost amusing how she’s rationing her Oscar-baited goods, so to speak, isn’t it? Here we go:

Anne Hathaway

Anne on securing her role: “There was resistance because I was between their ideal ages for the parts — maybe not mature enough for Fantine but past the point where I could believably play Cosette [Fantine's daughter, later embodied by Seyfried]. And I did what I do when I really want a role: I got fiery and told my agent, ‘Just get me in the room.’”

Anne on her weight loss: She immersed herself in the role, hiring a researcher who led her to books on sexual slavery and losing weight in two stages (she lost 10 pounds over three weeks before the shoot and an extra 15 pounds during production as her character degenerated). “I just had to stop eating,” she says, “all for a total of 13 days’ shooting.”

Hugh lost some weight (and gained) some weight too! Jackman also had to shed weight to portray the gaunt convict seen at the film’s beginning — he dropped 15 pounds before bingeing and adding 30 more to mirror Valjean’s burgeoning success. “I was eating anything I could,” he says. “If ever there are any outtakes, there’s a lot of me burping.”

Hugh on the tough shoot: After a skeletal crew was sent to Gourdon in France to shoot Jackman wandering the mountains, filming shifted to England and the British coast, where a massive early sequence takes place with scores of convicts dragging a ship into port while being doused with waves. “It was 12 degrees, and the water was coming straight off the ocean,” sighs Jackman. “We were there for three days.”

[From Hollywood Reporter]

Hugh doesn’t really seem to be pushing for an Oscar, does he? He’s gained and lost weight for roles before, so this is really old hat for him. I think he’d be fine with winning an award, but it’s not his thing to worry about if and when it happens. Some actors are like that, and I think I’d prefer to be of that mindset than losing self respect just for a gold-plated statuette. Then again, I usually enjoy watching actors dole out the dish in an effort to win votes from The Academy, so there’s that.

Here are a few photos of Anne in London ahead of the Les Miserables premiere. Jeans and flowers suit her much more than that dreadful premiere dress.

Anne Hathaway in Givenchy at the ‘Les Mis’ UK premiere: white-hot or hot mess?

These are photos from last night’s UK premiere of Les Miserables. Note: I am splitting up the premiere pics into two batches, one for the boys and one for the girls. And I’m only focusing on the people who are actually in the movie too. I have to say… none of these ladies is really blowing me away, style-wise. Let’s talk about Anne Hathaway first. She wore a white beaded Givenchy Spring ’12 gown which… isn’t great. Like, I don’t flat-out hate it (it doesn’t disgust me), but I think Annie could do so much better, and she could do so much better with very little effort. Maybe she’s saving her really amazing looks for other red carpets down the line. I will say this: I LOVE her hair right now. It’s long enough in the front to be swept aside and her hair just looks really great this length. Also: this Givenchy is a mess in the back.

Here’s Amanda Seyfried in Balenciaga. It’s okay from the waist up, but it’s just so fussy and overly-ruffled from the waist down. Her boobs look amazing though.

Samantha Barks – this is her big, big debut (she’s a stage actress). She plays Eponine. For her first big red carpet, Samantha chose… Stella McCartney dress. Bad move, Samantha, although it could have been worse. As it is… her dress looks like a boob sling. That swerving cutout is cray.

Helena Bonham Carter = The Queen. I’m assuming this is Westwood. Fabulous.

Anne Hathaway won’t discuss her ‘Les Mis’ weight loss: ‘I don’t answer that question’

I like Anne Hathaway. A bold pronouncement, I know. I used to not “get” Anne, but a few years ago, I found myself starting to come around. She’s one of the most talented actresses out there, I think she’s beautiful (I know some of you don’t agree) and I think she’s a lot smarter than the average starlet/actress. That being said, Annie is still flawed, like everyone. Anne sometimes gets on my last nerve, and I think she has the tendency to be too-cute-by-half, and her default personality can at times come off as “pretentious nerd”. Anne has a new interview with Access Hollywood, and she was asked about her crazy weight loss for Les Miserables. Instead of talking about it – which is, after all, the point, right? – Anne actually sounded like she was concern-trolling all of us in the cheap seats.

Anne Hathaway admitted she was on a strict regimen to get in shape to play Selina Kyle – aka Catwoman — in “The Dark Knight Rises,” but she’s pledged to keep mum on how she got un-fit – and super skinny – to play doomed prostitute Fantine in “Les Miserables.”

“I don’t answer that question. Not to like get super serious about it, but just there’s so many people out there that will try something unhealthy to lose weight,” Anne explained, when Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle brought up how much she hates the “weight” question with regards to this film.

“I don’t want to contribute to that. So actually I don’t answer the question,” the actress added.

But Anne was absolutely open about her first post-film meal.

“I had spelt pasta with garlic oil and like a lot of beautiful fresh tomatoes and then I had a twice baked potatoes, with basil sun dried tomatoes [and] oil. It was so good,” she raved.

Anne also revealed that Russell Crowe, who plays Javert in the film, the long arm of the law, was actually a total sweetie to the actress and her post-film first meal.

“Russell Crowe — don’t let this tough guy exterior fool you — he’s a big marshmallow-hearted man,” she said. “He scoured London and found me a vegan chocolate cake and brought me this huge vegan chocolate cake when I was done because he asked me, ‘Are you going to have anything sweet?’ I’m like, ‘No, no, I don’t. We were shooting way out in the middle of nowhere. I’m like, ‘I can’t be bothered to go to London to get that!’ And he brought it for me… to make sure that I was going to be able to celebrate with something sweet.”

[From Access Hollywood]

On face value, I understand what she’s saying, and I agree. Why contribute to that pro-ana BS? Why talk in neurotic detail about how you shaved off those pounds? And I also think that once she starts talking about it, everyone will ask her about it and it will be a repeat of Natalie Portman’s Black Swan Oscar campaign where everyone was obsessed with her weight and Mila Kunis’s weight.

But there are several problems. One, Anne has ALREADY talked about it – notably to Vogue (where she explained that she lived on oatmeal paste for weeks). So, it’s like closing the barn door after the horses have bolted. Two, Anne’s physical “transformation” is a huge part of her Oscar campaign. You know, the whole reason we’re here, the whole reason Anne is talking about Les Mis, her whole Oscar strategy of talking about how difficult it was to lose the weight and chop off her hair (all for the role of a lifetime, she’ll tell the Academy) in between dropping in little personal details about her wedding and how she can’t wait to have babies.

Anyway, I think it’s far more likely that Anne doesn’t want to “give away” such important and Oscar-worthy campaigning to an outlet like Access Hollywood. She’ll save it for Vanity Fair or The Hollywood Reporter or The Los Angeles Times. She’ll go into more details about her diet with those outlets. Trust me.
