The 2010 Emmys: The Open Post (updates)

LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 25: Celebrity seating place cards are displayed during the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards press preview Day at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on August 25, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Sigh… CB and I debated a little about how best to cover this year’s Emmys (which most people have forgotten about), and here’s what we’ve decided: today, Sunday, we’re going to have this open post for all of you to talk about whatever Emmy-related observations you want in real time. I’ll be updating throughout the night with winners and losers and my take on interesting moments throughout the telecast. And then tomorrow, we’ll do a bunch of fashion posts and a “Hot Guy Awards: The Emmys” or “Hot Guy Emmys: the Awards” post. I’ll let you decide on the name. I can already predict that Hugh Laurie and Jon Hamm will make my list of Hot Guy Emmy Awards.

So, I’ll kick things off: who are you excited to see? What are you dreading? I’m excited to see the Mad Men people, of course, and I’m actually looking forward to Clooney & Canalis’ appearance. You know that will be some good gossip, and we should be able to determine in mere seconds whether of not Clooney is over her ass yet. As far as Emmy fashion… well, who are the Emmy girls who usually bring it? See… I can’t really think of one. You know Christina Hendricks is probably going to look like hell, just because no one ever knows how to style a pale, buxom redhead. It’s like stylists need their own Rosetta Stone to figure out where to start with her.

Anyway, to start things off, I just thought I’d show some of my favorite photos of some of my favorite Emmy boys, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, acting weird at the Emmys in years past. The photo of Colbert and Kanye is making my life, actually. The one of Colbert and Jason Jones is pretty righteous too.

PRE-RED CARPET UPDATE: Jesus, what will it take for E! to give Kristen Dos Santos her own show? She knows everything about television, and she would be far more entertaining than these Hills sluts.

RED CARPET UPDATES:
*Didn’t Kelly Osbourne look cute? She’s lost so much weight, and her hair is very pretty.
*ZOMG Ty Burrell’s wife’s dress was insane. She looked like a cat toy.
*Kill me now, because I loved Claire Danes’ pale, beaded/sequiny Armani.
*Wasn’t Kim Kardashian a really good red carpet interviewer? Why doesn’t she have that job? She asks all the right questions and she was surprisingly charming. You could tell La Seacrest was PISSED.
*Jane Lynch looks gorge! As does Lea Michele in de la Renta.
*God, I hate Eva Longoria. With a passion.
*Ricky Gervais looked cute, but JESUS CHRIST JON HAMM HAMM HAMM!!!!!!!! My God. The Hamm in Armani, there should be a law against that.
*January Jones looked like unkempt hell, right?
*I haven’t seen Christina Hendricks full dress yet, but I see lots of boobs and feathers. I’m terrified.
*Bryan Cranston looked cute. I don’t watch Breaking Bad so I have no strong opinion about him though.
*Ooooh… who caught Kate Gosselin’s bitchface on the red carpet? That sh-t was funny.
*Christina Hendricks didn’t look terrible in her Zac Posen. Also: could the camera be on her boobs any more? The camera guy was actually zooming in on them!
*Tina Fey made a rare fashion win in Oscar de la Renta.
*Heidi Klum’s dress was all kinds of wrong, as was Mindy Kaling’s.
*Stephen Moyer & Anna Paquin – cute, but not stellar. Anna seemed like she was phoning it in.
*The little boy from Modern Family is adorable!
*So… La Seacrest was trying to cruise Neal Patrick Harris, correct?
*Hugh Laurie & Steve Carrell are so cute! I love Nancy Walls too. I miss her.
*Kristen Dos Santos is knocked up again! Congrats!
*Juliana Marguilies looked “eh”. I likes Julie Louis-Dreyfus’s Narciso gown. She always wears Narciso, and it always works for her.
*I love Glenn Close and everything, but she didn’t look that great, right?
*I can’t help my overwhelming attraction to John Krasinski. I find him adorable.

Okay, Susan Sarandon just walked off before Guiliana had the chance to interview her, so the red carpet is winding down. I’ll update this post in a few hours with some of the winners and lowers, y’all!

**Note: George Clooney “won” the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award and gave a short speech. He didn’t walk the red carpet, from what I saw, and I didn’t see Elisabetta Canalis whatsoever. She was bragging everywhere about going to the Emmys with him. Did she get dumped? Was she there? Apparently, she was there, but she got very little camera time, which must have killed her.

Jon Hamm loses to Neil Patrick Harris, plus photos from the Creative Arts Emmys

creative_emmy_awards_3_01_wenn2968201

You know what pisses me off? When there are new photos of Jon Hamm and the photo agencies hide them! I didn’t even realize that The Hamm was in attendance for Saturday night’s Creative Arts Emmys (as Kathy Griffin says, “The Schmemmys”), which are the Emmys given out for the technical aspects of television, like makeup and editing and such. I had to look through the whole photo set to find My Hamm! Anyway… gradually, The Schmemmys have gotten increasingly A-List, and a handful of really cool people show up and support their technical peeps. The Hamm gets bonus points for showing up – granted, he was nominated for Guest Star (for 30 Rock), which he lost to Neil Patrick Harris. But The Hamm didn’t have to show! I love that he did, though. Such a gentleman.

wenn2968277

Other Best Guest Star winners were Betty White (for SNL), Ann-Margret (for Law & Order: SVU) and John Lithgow (for Dexter). Here are some additional photos from the Schmemmys of Christina Hendricks (looking lovely in black, and with shorter hair), NPH and his baby-daddy, Lily Tomlin, Kathy Griffin and Kristin Chenoweth. Oh, and Alan Cumming looking… damn, I kind of want him in that cheesy blue plaid.

Teen Choice Awards: winners, losers & Megan Fox’s crazy face

wenn2955795

Okay, I just went through the photos of last night’s Teen Choice Awards, and I can honestly say that I officially feel like an old fart. I don’t know who half of these people are! I guess they’re, like, Disney Family or Nickelodeon stars? Eh. Not to say there weren’t some big names. Most people are talking about Sandra Bullock’s rocker-chick appearance to pick up her Choice Movie Actress award – Bullock was wearing leather pants, a t-shirt and a new hair style – loose long locks with some bangs and some fringe. It looks good on her – really good. Like, “elixir of youth” good. Apparently, she danced with Betty White on stage too. We don’t seem to have those photos (because Sandra didn‘t walk the red carpet), but HuffPo has a good one. Bullock was also very gracious when she won:

Bullock – dressed in a gray top, black leather pants and high heels – came on stage and thanked cheering fans. “I don’t know if you should bring attention to this. Some things are better left unsaid. It’s been awhile since I was a teen,” she said. “I’m so blessed and lucky. The Blind Side – I got to meet so many good people, so many good lessons I took away from it.”

Then, Bullock invited her “sweet friend” Betty White, who she joked hadn’t been a teen “since 1919,” onto the stage. “I was worried about her fitting in but that’s not the problem,” Bullock said. “The problem is she was supposed to jump in on my line, so Betty get your ass out on this stage!”

The two then shimmied together to Lil Jon’s “Get Low.”

[From People]

Oh, I just realized something: I felt guilty for not watching this show because my world shuts down when Mad Men is on, and I’m not even conscious of other programming, but the awards show didn’t come on last night. It doesn’t air until tonight. Okay, I feel a little bit better. It comes on tonight at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Other winners: Selena Gomez, Channing Tatum, Megan Fox (Choice Female Hottie), Twilight’s Taylor Lautner (Choice Male Hottie), and Gossip Girl stars Chace Crawford and Leighton Meester (Choice Drama TV Actor and Actress), Justin Bieber, and the cast of Glee. Katy Perry was the hostess of the evening, and she performed her horrible new single, “Teenage Dream”. Ugh.

By the way, Megan Fox looks insane, right? Ugh, this chick.

Will Michael C. Hall win the Emmy because he beat cancer?

fp_5354685_hall_michaelc_moe_070810

Yesterday, the Emmy nominations came out and everyone was very excited to see that Michael C. Hall got a lead actor nomination, and that Dexter was nominated for Outstanding Drama. Even though I would love to Jon “The Hamm” Hamm pick up the lead actor Emmy, I think Michael has got it in the bag this year. Not only was the past season of Dexter critically acclaimed, but Michael’s personal story of overcoming a diagnosis of Hodgkins lymphoma will surely sway many Emmy voters. And NO, I’m not saying Michael will get the Emmy just because he was sick. I’m saying that he’s a great actor doing great work, and people love to reward a great actor doing great work who also overcame something harrowing in his personal life. It’s the Michael J. Fox thing – Fox was always a lovely, beloved comedic actor, but when he came out and began talking about Parkinson’s, he won every award out there.

Anyway, Michael is in remission now, and he’s already back to looking much healthier than he did for this past winter’s awards season. These are photos of him from yesterday, looking great. Michael also gave some interviews about how he feels about his Emmy nomination:

Michael C. Hall was nominated for the fourth time Thursday for his portrayal of the serial killer we all adore on “Dexter.”

Hall, who is known for his soft-spoken and private nature, says he’s finally getting used to doing the awards thing. The Showtime series earned 19 nominations in total, including outstanding drama.

“It becomes less overwhelming in terms of the shock to your system, in terms of the red carpet and the flashing photographers,” he said. “It’s easier to enjoy if you’ve been before. It’s kind of nerve-racking, ultimately.”

Asked what Dexter would say if he won, Hall replied: “Take that universe! That would be his voiceover.”

On the show being nominated too: “It really makes it so much richer an experience for the show to receive the nomination too. It would be kind of isolating if I were the only one nominated. …Now with Dexter, we don’t want to keep him killing people incidentally. And there has been a real evolution in how he executes the code, and he is a little adrift. But I look forward to seeing where he goes from here.”

[From The LA Times & Variety]

If all of that isn’t good enough news, In Touch Weekly reported last week that Michael and his wife Jennifer Carpenter (she plays Dexter’s sister Deb) are ready to start trying for a baby after putting their family plans on hold with Michael’s cancer diagnosis. An insider told In Touch (via ICYDK): “They’re all set to start trying… Jen is taking prenatal vitamins and reading every book about babies she can get her hands on.” Aw. I hope it happens for them. I love them both so much.

Once again, the complete list is at Entertainment Weekly here.

I just wanted to gush about a few people that I’m so happy about – Christina Hendricks! YAY! She totally deserves that Emmy nomination, she’s been rocking the Mad Men house for three seasons, and she’s become one of my favorite characters. And John Slattery! I have naughty thoughts about that Silver Fox, for real. And he’s so talented and beautiful, just a lovely actor. I’m also happy to see Sofia Vergara from Modern Family – she really is hilarious on that show, and I worry sometimes that people won’t see beyond her lovely and epic rack to understand she’s a deft comedienne. That being said, Jane Lynch will probably win that category. Also – Modern Family’s Ty Burrell! YAY! He’s been a character actor for so many years, and he just found his role with this dorky, strange, hilarious dad.

Disappointments: That no one beyond Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn or Michael Emerson from Lost got acting nominations. It would have been wonderful to see some of the other actors get recognized, like Elizabeth Mitchell, or Jorge Garcia, or Josh Holloway (I just want to see that motherf-cker in a tux, though). And no Ed O’Neill from Modern Family? WTH? He’s another extremely underrated actor who should have been recognized for his DECADES of great television work. Also – I would love to see some of the other actors from The Closer get recognized, Jon Tenney in particular (he plays Fritz, Brenda’s husband). Oh, well.

BET Awards: Bad fashion, eye-candy and Queen Latifah

It looks like last night’s BET awards were a really big event. Now I kind of regret not watching, so, my bad. Let’s see – in addition to the Chris Brown junk, Kanye West made a comeback performance, and Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Crake were some of the big winners of the evening. Queen Latifah hosted. Oh, and Eminem was there too – he performed with Keshia Cole, then performed “Not Afraid.” John Legend got the Humanitarian Award. For more details and photos, BET has a gallery, and All Hip Hop has a solid recap.

Now, onto the fashion. First of all, seriously, what is up with Jada Pinkett Smith? These days she’s just looking hard and mean.

I think Alicia Keys might be having some real issues dressing her pregnant body. This dress is nice, but I’m not sure she should have performed in it. It looks like we’re on the verge of seeing vadge.

Scarlett Johansson: “I know what it’s like to struggle as an actor”

wenn2886764

It’s not that Scarlett Johansson is not being gracious to her harshest critics – she is. There are some people who have been sniping about her victory at the Tony Awards two weekends ago. Scarlett won a Tony for her performance in A View From the Bridge, and now people are saying that she only won because she’s a movie star and she has a recognizable name, and that the Tonys should be about awarding great stage actors. ScarJo tells her critics: “I pounded the pavement for years and I know what it’s like to struggle as an actor. A lot of it is luck and, certainly, a lot of it is opportunity — and the lack of that. So, I totally understand the frustration there.” Um… wasn’t she a child actor who transitioned gracefully into adult roles with parts in Ghost World and The Man Who Wasn’t There? Sure, I’m sure she did work hard, I’m not saying that. What I’m saying is that I doubt she struggled like all of those starving actors in New York and LA, hoping they get a dog food commercial so they can have union medial insurance.

Scarlett Johansson is firing back at critics who argue the actress is undeserving of a Tony Award for her role in Broadway’s A View From the Bridge.

“I pounded the pavement for years and I know what it’s like to struggle as an actor. A lot of it is luck and, certainly, a lot of it is opportunity — and the lack of that,” Johansson told Broadway World. “So, I totally understand the frustration there.”

The 25-year-old actress’ win prompted fellow Broadway star Hunter Foster to start a Facebook campaign, “Give The Tonys Back To Broadway.” Foster believes Johansson’s Hollywood status was the main reason behind her victory earlier this month, preventing Broadway veterans from taking home a trophy.

“The actors we’ve seen this season that we recognize from film — Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Liev Schreiber and Catherine Zeta-Jones, etc. — have not only made a huge impact on ticket sales but have given tour de force performances and all started their careers as stage actors, dedicating themselves to making an impression in the theater,” Johansson argued. “This goes to show that actors are actors, whatever the outlet, and with perseverance and drive, can cross the boundaries of the medium.”

Still, the Iron Man 2 bombshell admits she can relate to the frustrations that Foster and other critics have expressed — but she’s making no apologies.

“A lot of my friends who are struggling actors are going through the same thing. But, I can’t apologize for it. I have worked my ass off to get to where I am so I understand that struggle,” Johansson explained. “For me, it’s more about hiring the right person for the job. If somebody is cast because they are a name but they’re not right for the job, well, it’s very frustrating.”

[From Us Weekly]

See, the other part I do agree with, her argument that movie stars shouldn’t be disregarded or discounted for stage work when they just want to improve their technique and their credibility as actors. And I think ScarJo is taking the hit that was probably meant for Denzel and Catherine Zeta-Jones too, it’s just that Zeta and Denzel didn’t deign to give an interview about the criticism. As long as actors crave credibility and challenge, there will be movie stars on Broadway. And it is good for Broadway – it helps with the struggling New York theatres, and it helps keep people employed. Plus, it just feels like people are Kanye-ing ScarJo – she should get a few weeks to enjoy her victory without it being pissed on by theatre bitches.

Tony Awards: ScarJo, Zeta, Helen Mirren, Sean Hayes and Botox!

Last night was the Tony Awards, one of the biggest parties of New York, a celebration of Broadway and singing and dancing and acting. This year, Sean Hayes was the host, and by all accounts, he did a wonderful job. Sean opened the show with a little appearance from his friend Kristin Chenoweth, who defended him against Newsweek’s homophobic critic. They responded the only way they could – by making out in front of the packed audience. Sean looks like a good kisser!

I have to admit, I didn’t watch it, not because I really have anything against the theatre, it’s just that I don’t think the Tonys are a particularly exciting awards show. However, the Tonys went Hollywood this year, and several big “names” won awards. Denzel Washington took home best actor in a non-musical, and his Fences costar Viola Davis (Oscar nominated for Doubt) took home Best Actress. Also receiving awards: Scarlett Johansson for best featured performance (it’s like a supporting actress award), and Catherine Zeta-Jones for her work in musical A Little Night Music. For a complete recap, go to HuffPo or People Magazine. From here, I just wanted to cover the fashion.

I liked Scarlett Johansson’s dress and styling a lot. For once, Scar didn’t get anything wrong. Great dress, great fit, great makeup and decent hair. Does she give off the faint whiff of “corpsey”? Sure. But she doesn’t look deathly, so that’s an improvement.

Katie Holmes was a presenter… with Daniel Radcliffe. Is Daniel really, really short or is Katie just that tall? Probably both. The dress is meh. The color is okay, I guess, but it washes her out, and it doesn’t look long enough. Like it’s a dress meant for Suri. Daniel looks adorable, though.

I love Viola Davis, seen here with Denzel. I’ve loved her for many years, ever since that show she did with Sam Waterston. So I’ve followed her career, and can I just say something? She has the right idea with her style, she really does. She likes to look a bit sexy on the red carpet, and her makeup and hair usually look awesome. But she consistently has fabric issues with her dresses/gowns. This acid yellow-green is hideous, and it’s only because I like Viola that I think it looks okay.

Okay, seriously, how much work has Catherine Zeta-Jones had? She’s so beautiful, but looking through all of these photos of her… she looks like a 50-something woman who recently had an extreme facelift. Oh, I think the dress is Versace. It’s really pretty.

F-ck me, how much do I love Cate Blanchett? On anyone else, this suit would be a disaster. On Cate, it’s AMAZING.

Jada…girl, stop. This sh-t ain’t good. Why are you even there? And why are wearing that sh-t?

….Ricky Martin…?…

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Is it just me, or has Antonio gone in for a little work too? He looks very young and refreshed. Although I suspect anyone would look young and fresh standing next to Melanie. No offense to Melanie, who I actually like. But yikes.

Ugh, I do not care for Naomi Watts’ dress at all. It may be high-fashion and all, but that color on a fair-skinned blonde makes it seem like Liev Schreiber is standing next to an statue of oatmeal. Liev looks cute, though. A bit squinty.

Angela Lansbury! She got some kind of lifetime achievement something or other. She looks so f-cking good. I love when older gals wear red. My verdict: Angela is best dressed at the Tonys.

My God, will you look at Helen Mirren’s body? It’s insane how amazing she looks. I even like the simple dress, with what I can only imagine is a sprig of mistletoe on her boob.

CMT Awards fashion: Taylor Swift, LeAnn Rimes, Nicole Kidman & Botox!

Kid Rock speaks to the press at the Country Music Television Awards in Nashville, Tennessee on June 9, 2010. UPI/Terry Wyatt Photo via Newscom

Last night, the CMT Awards were held in Nashville. Kid Rock was the MC, and country stars like Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood won big. People Magazine has more details about the show here. Since I’m not invested in country music or who wins, I’ll leave the awards show recap at that. But since we’re here, let’s talk fashion and who had some work done.

Um… LeAnn Rimes had something done, right? She didn’t used to look like this. Some nip-and-tuck, Botox and… God knows what. The dress is hideous ‘70s shower curtain too, but considering LeAnn has horrible style, this might be one of her better looks.

Nicole Kidman was wearing some kind of shiny, upholstery-looking shift dress in a neutral beige/yellow kind of color. It did nothing for her coloring, but it wasn’t too bad either. I just wanted to show this photo of Nicole’s crazy lips in profile.

Taylor Swift went sleek, finally straightening her hair. I love when she has straight hair, and yes, I know it must be a time-consuming bitch to straighten her curly hair, etc. I’m not saying I hate her curly hair, just that I think she looks so much better and more sophisticated with a sleek hair style. If she can figure out a way to style curly hair to give her the same effect, God bless. As for her dress, eh. I like the color. She does the sweetheart neckline too often.

F-ck me, I love Paula Deen. I’m surprised she wasn’t wearing an evening gown made of butter and chocolate. She looks awesome! But she always looks great, the lady can do no wrong.

I didn’t just choose a Sheryl Crow photo where her face looks especially jacked, her face looks like this in many photos. I think she had some bad Botox before she came or something. But I really like her dress!

Who is Jake Owen and why is he so pretty?

Not looking so pretty? Luke Wilson. He looks… unclean.

I was going to say that Faith Hill’s dress was too cutesy, but it’s actually not that bad. It’s very sweet and pretty. Taylor Swift would look good in this.

Hayden Panettiere looks… ugh. Well, she doesn’t look like she’s got implants anymore. And her hair has grown out a little and I think it looks kind of cute. But the dress is horrible.

Yikes. Miranda Lambert is a pretty girl, but this dress is A) crazy unflattering and B) fug.

I’ve finally figured out what always bothered me about RHOA’s Kim Zolciak – she and Trisha Yearwood could be sisters. While I appreciate Trisha’s boldness in wearing leather, this dress is not flattering at all.

Okay these photos are too funny to even comment on. Ladies and gentlemen, Reba McEntire and Kenan Thompson:

MTV Movie Awards: The Fashion

Fashion-wise, any MTV awards show is going to fall under the category of “anything goes”. I think most celebrities just wear jazzed up versions of whatever they’re comfortable in. But there has always been newsworthy fashion moments at the MTV awards shows, and last night was no exception. Let’s go through some of the best and worst of the evening, starting with Miss Sandy Bullock up there. I loved her dress – it fit her beautifully, it showed off her great legs, and it looked conservative from the front, and crazy sexy from the back:

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA - JUNE 06: Scarlett Johansson (L) and Sandra Bullock onstage at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards held at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal Studios on June 6, 2010 in Universal City, California. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Getty Images)

Scarlett Johansson looked cute too, but the night wasn’t really about her, so whatever. ScarJo seems to be drawn to fabrics that look like upholstery, in my opinion. She might want to keep an eye on that.

Now, Kristen Stewart. The outfit was kind of cute, actually. I think in Kristen’s mind, her favorite body part is her legs, because she wears a lot of short skirts. I think skirts would be much more flattering on her if she went with a hemline just a few inches longer. Other than that, she looked cute when she wasn’t rolling her eyes, hunching over or acting like a dumb kid who was too important for this crap:

Katy Perry wore three different outfits last night. And she wore the same electric blue Bettie Page wig with all of them. My God, her breasts. I know I’ve asked this before, but are they natural? I’ll kill her if they’re natural:

Jessica Alba and Vanessa Hudgins looked totally meh in my opinion. Like neither of them was really trying. So, whatever. What kind of new-fangled leggings are those?

It kills me a little, but this is one of Lindsay Lohan’s better looks as of late. Yes, she looks like a Charlie’s Angel reject, and yes, the 1970s have called and they want their crackhead back. But although she looks 40-something, it’s a pretty good 40-something.

I didn’t care for Jessica Biel’s outfit. It’s like she’s trying too hard to be girly and fashion-forward, and she just looks out of place.

Cameron Diaz wore a simple little floral cocktail dress. She looked cute. Tom looked nice when he finally got all of the Len Grossman makeup and stuff off. But I still wouldn’t do him. As Len Grossman, I would nail it. As regular Tom Cruise, not so much.

Bettie White looked lovely, as always.

Pattinson just wore his normal clothes. He looked cute as a button too.

Eva Mendes was probably my least favorite outfit of the night. That dress was like a sack used to disguise how much weight Eva has lost. And Eva seemed drunk.

I think Anna Kendrick is a little cutie, but her style… my God. And it was like this the whole awards season too! She’s got a unique look, she’s got a petite, bangin’ little body, and it seems like no one knows how to dress her. Ugh. I just want to shake her and yell “You are not Paris Hilton! And you’re not a 40-something character actress either! Wear something pretty that doesn’t skank you out or age you twenty years!

That’s about it. There wasn’t a lot of A-list talent at the show, and everything seemed pulled together at the last moment, including the fashion. I will leave you with one last, haunting image… Katie Holmes watching her husband dance his ass off. I wonder if it bothers her that Tom is a much better dancer?
