Who wore it best: John Mayer in the Borat Tankini (NSFW)

John Mayer rocked the neon green one-piece over the shoulder boulder holder made famous by Borat about two years ago. He was having some fun and jogging around the deck on a three day Carnival Caribbean cruise called the Mayercraft last weekend, in which guests were treated to concerts by Mayer and 15 other artists, including Martin Sexton and DJ Logic. Tickets were reasonably priced considering the venue and started at $674 for an inside cabin.

Thanks to D-Listed for the heads up on these pictures, which were found on ONTD. (One image is from the Mayercraft photo contest site.) The blogger and cruise guest who originally posted the photos has removed them from her site due to the influx of traffic. I initially thought it was some Mayer conspiracy to control the Internets, considering how he so quickly removed his blog when it received too much attention.

Here’s the video, thanks To US Weekly and Rolling Stone. More details about the cruise can be found on Rolling Stone’s website.

You go, John Mayer, and please restart your blog and suck it up when you get some criticism. All you have to do is write something the next day, and people will move on.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher with one month-old baby Olive

The details were initially hazy about the birth of Sacha Baron Cohen and his fiance Isla Fisher’s first baby last month. Reports in Fisher’s native Australia declared correctly that the pair had a girl, but the exact date and place of the birth was unknown. Later rumors had their baby a boy, with the name incorrectly given as “Sandler James.”

It turns out that the Borat comedian and his fiance did have a girl last month, and that her name is Olive. Instead of opting for a high-paid magazine reveal, the hilarious impersonator and his lovely girlfriend decided to let the paparazzi take pictures yesterday as they stood outside a hotel. They looked happy and relaxed, smiling and showing the baby. Their good friends Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber also decided to debut their newborn by letting photographers have unpaid access to pictures. Naomi showed off little Alexander Pete Schreiber to paparazzi when he was two weeks old.

Isla looks incredible, and their baby is so cute! Babies are so adorable at that age. I remember an elderly woman coming up to my husband and me when our son was a month old and telling us how fast it all went. Now that he’s three I realize how right she was.

Baron Cohen will next appear in the film Bruno, in which he dupes people with his alter ego, a flaming Austrian talk show host. Fisher says she intends to be a stay-at-home mom.

Thanks to Splash News for these pictures and The Daily Mail for the heads up.

Sacha Baron Cohen kills off Borat

Sacha Baron Cohen told NPR’s Terry Gross that his days of performing as the Kazakh character Borat are over because too many people recognize him due to the success of his film. He ruled out playing Borat again, and said he may move away from pranking people in character. He’s not going to quit too soon, because he’s contractually obligated to make a movie as Austrian fashion reporter Bruno:

Cohen - who was named Best Actor in a Film Musical or Comedy at last night’s (15.01.07) Golden Globe Awards - said in an interview with a US radio station: “I think it will probably be impossible to do Borat again. There are a number of things that are in development. The next thing will probably be a scripted comedy. I think the days of me going undercover are probably over.

Cohen, who is engaged to ‘Wedding Crashers’ actress Isla Fisher, has reportedly signed a £22 million deal with Universal Pictures to star as Bruno - a flamboyant gay Austrian fashion reporter who, similarly to Borat, would go undercover to infiltrate the fashion world.

Hollywood insiders are concerned Cohen’s decision could jeopardise the deal. A source said: “They were banking on him coming up with another Borat. There’s no guarantee people will flock to see something that is scripted.”

Cohen, 35, admits he found it tough playing Borat in the movie, ‘Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’.

He explained: “It was tiring having to stay in character, usually for about eight hours at a time, so as not to raise suspicion.

“There is a lot of physical preparation. I never washed the suit - when I come in the room there’s this terrible smell. And Borat doesn’t wear any deodorant.”

[via Digg]

That’s too bad, because Borat is pretty funny. It seems like he could continue playing him for laughs even if he can’t fool people anymore.

Also, maybe he meant that the Bruno film isn’t going to have real pranks - it’s just going to seem like it. With all the lawsuits against the Borat movie, maybe producers don’t want to take a chance.

Is Sacha Baron Cohen as messed up as Andy Kaufman was?

Page Six reports that Sacha Baron Cohen, better known as Borat, Ali G and Bruno, didn’t pose for pictures at a pre Golden Globes party. He looks a bit reluctant posing with his Globe at the Paramount after party in these pictures. They say he wants to stay out of the spotlight and it could be so that he can continue pulling the wool over people’s eyes while in character. He’s about to film a new movie as another one of his alter egos, flaming Austrian fashion commentor Bruno, and doesn’t want to be recognized.

Stardom seems to have gone to the head of Sacha Baron Cohen, who attended HBO’s pre-Golden Globes party at the Chateau Marmont, but refused to pose for photos. “He needs to stop being so recognizable,” laughed one spy.

Cohen - who seems more comfortable when he stays in character as Ali G or Borat - is said to be “shunning publicity” to prepare for his next movie, where he’ll star as his third character, the flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter Bruno.

My favorite Bruno bit is when he interviews a Miami club owner and asks him how he makes sure undesirables - like people in wheelchairs - can’t get in. The guy answers all serious-like that he just puts people off to the side and makes them wait. (At least that’s how I remember it.)

I’ve read this before about Cohen, and it seems like he wants to keep his personal life private and is only comfortable being in the spotlight when he’s in character. He’s dedicated to the Jewish faith and keeps the Sabbath, which seems like a wild contrast to the misogynistic Kazakh who sang “throw the Jew down the well” to a room full of cheering yokels.

I wonder what kind of psychological issues that can create in a person. There was a story in mid November about Hugh Laurie saving Cohen from getting beaten up by an angry guy on the street who was the victim of one of Borat’s pranks. Commentors said at that time that Cohen is a lot like Andy Kaufman of Taxi fame. Poor Boopie said “This is a guy who does not like to be out of character and blurs the line between character and reality.” (Andy Kaufman was so good at character-based comedy, that some fans still doubt that Kaufman is dead, calling it an elaborate hoax. Kaufman was said to have died in 1984 of renal failure caused by a rare form of lung cancer. Kaufman was a non-smoker and told people that he waunted to fake his death.)

There seems to be a difference between playing a role for years, like on a long-running soap opera, and pretending you actually are that character when you meet other people IRL. Maybe Cohen just doesn’t want fans to know who he is so they’ll be more convinced by his obnoxious characters. It’s got to affect him, thogh, and his kind of apologetic look here suggests that the “real” Cohen isn’t that comfortable in the spotlight.

Here’s Cohen’s Golden Globe acceptance speech. He seems all serious in the beginning, and then cracks a joke about having his costar sit on his face:

Update: pictures removed due to end of subscription agreement with photo agency.

Borat causes Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock split

It looks like Borat is the reason behind the breakup of Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock’s less than four-month marriage. Pam screened the movie for Kid, in which she makes a cameo as herself with Borat throwing a bag over her head and chasing her around. She looks like she’s really bothered by the whole thing and is caught offguard, but word is she was in on the joke. Kid was so upset at her performance that he called her a slut in front of everyone. That’s pretty much when their really solid marriage broke down:

“Ron Meyer held a screening of ‘Borat’ at his house for a bunch of people, including Pam and Bob,” says an Anderson pal. “It was the first time Bob [Kid Rock] had seen the movie, and, well, he didn’t like it.”

The hugely popular film shows Sasha Baron Cohen - in character as Borat Sagdiyev - falling in love with Anderson after seeing her in a “Baywatch” rerun, then driving across America in order to propose marriage to her.

Her friend tells Page Six, “Bob started screaming at Pam, saying she had humiliated herself and telling her, ‘You’re nothing but a whore! You’re a slut! How could you do that movie?’ - in front of everyone. It was very embarrassing.

“Pam thought he could have a sense of humor about the movie. She was in on the gag from the very beginning and loved doing the movie. And on the eve of what was supposed to be a very positive thing, he made it an awful night.

“Ever since that night, it has been icicles between them,” the friend relates. “Bob is just a very unhappy and angry man. Pam is very disenchanted and sad. You know, there are reasons why she never married him before. Those reasons disappeared while they were together on a boat in St. Tropez, but she knows now that they never went away. The reality is he is an insecure, angry man….

“Pam is just very happy to not be in the same house with so much passive-aggressive hostility in it,” the friend adds.

My husband would be overjoyed if Borat stalked me and I made it into a movie. Kid Rock must have a real problem.

Dr. House saves Borat from a beat-down!

Sacha Baron Cohen was going out for a drink with Hugh Laurie, the actor who plays House on the popular medical drama. The two were headed out together in NY after appearing on Saturday Night Live. Cohen got into his annoying Kazakh character Borat and starting accosting a man on the street. The New Yorker wasn’t having any of that and starting punching Cohen in the face repeatedly! Dr. House came to the rescue and pushed the guy away:

BORAT star Sacha Baron Cohen was beaten up by a passer-by after he tried to play a prank as his alter ego.

He approached the man and said: “I like your clothings. Are nice! Please may I buying? I want have sex with it.”

But the bystander didn’t see the joke. He took one look at Cohen and punched him in the face.

The funnyman — known for his Borat catchphrase “Jagshemash!” — yelled for help but was slugged again and again.

He was rescued by actor pal Hugh Laurie who had been on his way to a New York bar with Cohen.

Laurie rushed to help and pushed the man away as Cohen struggled to his feet. A pal of Cohen said: “Sacha couldn’t resist playing the fool as Borat, but picked on the wrong person.

“I guess this guy thought he was being attacked by someone unstable and lashed out. Sacha is very lucky he didn’t get a much worse beating.”

The incident took place after Laurie and Cohen appeared on the US TV show Saturday Night Live. The Brit comics were on their way to a late dinner when Laurie suggested they visit a bar in Manhattan.

Laurie, 47, told friends he feared Cohen was going to get badly beaten up. Luckily, 35-year-old Cohen did not receive any lasting scars.

While “Borat: Cultural Learnings” is still tops at the box office, not everyone is happy with the film. Frat boys are suing for their appearance in the film, saying that filmmakers plied them with alcohol and that they were told the film would only be shown overseas. The small impoverished Romanian village of Glod is also considering suing producers. Locals say they were barely paid for their part in the film, and were told it was a documentary. They are also angered by their portrayal as backwards yokels, and say that animals were dragged into their homes and silly props were used that do not reflect their way of life.

Everyone loves Borat - tops with critics and at the box office

Vanity Fair might have thought that some pictures of Brad Pitt in his boxers wearing tube socks trumped Borat’s green banana hammock, but America doesn’t agree. Borat’s Cultural Learnings landed the top spot at the box office this weekend with a $26.4 million take. The movie also has an astonishing 96% critics aggregate rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s said to be hilarious, and a good time for everyone:

“Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” 20th Century Fox’s big-screen incarnation of Cohen’s Kazakh journalist from “Da Ali G Show,” took in $26.4 million over opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

“This picture was playing to full houses,” said Bruce Snyder, head of distribution at 20th Century Fox. “The planets aligned, the moons aligned, the stars aligned, and everything came together perfectly for us on this weekend.”

Box-office analysts had expected Disney’s “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause,” with Tim Allen returning as St. Nicholas, to win the weekend. The movie opened at No. 2 with $20 million, followed by the Paramount-DreamWorks animated comedy “Flushed Away” in third place with $19.1 million.

With great Internet buzz and a built-in following from “Da Ali G Show,” “Borat” succeeded where another cyber-sensation, “Snakes on a Plane,” failed. “Snakes on a Plane” opened last summer to modest crowds after months of Internet hoopla.

The raucous, raunchy “Borat” follows the adventures of British comedian Cohen’s TV journalist from Kazakhstan in a blend of fiction and improvised comic encounters as he travels the United States, meets and mocks Americans and reports back to his home country on his findings.

“It is what you go to the theater for,” said Hutch Parker, the studio’s head of production. “You get that infectious, outrageous, interactive experience. There are people yelling at the screen, there are cheers. It literally plays like a Rolling Stones concert.

Not all Americans are happy with Borat’s goofy antics. A southern TV producer who unwittingly interviewed Borat, making for a hilarious segment of the film, has been fired for falling prey to his scam. Sacha Baron Cohen, whose alter egos are the Kazakstani reporter Borat, the British chav Ali G, and the gay Austrian fashion show presenter Brüno, uses a front organization and a secretary to book his interviews. Once he’s in there, it’s kind of hard to kick him out.

Thanks to Digg for these stories.

Borat at Cannes (Topless sunbathers NSFW)

Borat hit Cannes with a bevy of cute women that were probably picked up on the beach for his photo op. In case you’re not familiar with Borat, he’s Sasha Baron Cohen, Ali G’s alter ego from Kazakhstan. He gets up to silly antics with less famous people than Ali G interviews. The Kazakhstani government is pissed that Borat tries to portrays their country like it’s full of backwards yokels who abuse women. Most people just think he’s funny and don’t care that he makes fun of a nation of people.

Here is an 8 minute video of Borat visiting a dating service and getting advice from a dating expert. One of his qualifications for a potential mate is that “She must be tight, like a man’s anus.” If that’s the case he may hurt the poor woman, because he claims to be big, “like a can of Pepsi.”

And here are some pictures of his arrival at Cannes. His footwear is the best. There are ass pictures and some topless sunbathers that are NSFW.
