Evan Rachel Wood v. Busy Phillips: who looked cuter in maternity-wear at Tribeca?

Here are some photos from last night’s premiere of A Case of You at the Tribeca Film Festival. Evan Rachel Wood debuted her sizeable baby bump last week as Tribeca opened, and I thought she looked so beautiful in those photos. She looks really pretty in these pics too – her gown is Dolce & Gabbana… because she’s still the face of D&G fragrances, I think. It’s flowery and definitely maternity-wear, and she looks so… radiant. For me, ERW is the prettiest pregnant lady these days. I know it’s not a competition or anything, but Vanity Fair did just “rank” pregnant-celebrity style and it’s a shame that ERW didn’t even make the list.

I think Busy Phillips is probably going to give birth any second now. And I have a wave of empathy for how uncomfortable she must be, and how difficult it is for her to find a cute outfit. That being said, this jumpsuit is a trainwreck.

And here are your boyfriends Peter Dinklage and Sam Rockwell, at the same premiere. HOT.

Sofia Vergara in white wrinkled Donna Karan at the SAGs: awful or sexy?

Last night, during the red carpet interviews, it was like a repeat for me with Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara. Julie was talking to Giuliana Rancic, and then Sofia Vergara crashed the party with her over-the-top personality and tatas. Don’t they do that every time? Like Julie starts it off and then Sofia has to barge in. It’s not like Julie minds, she’s good friends with Sofia and they probably arrive together and plan it like that, it’s just kind of tired for me, as is Sofia’s very consistent style. She does bombshell va-voom and that’s it. At that SAGs it was more of a dud dress for Sofia. She was in this very white, very wrinkled Donna Karan gown that just looked like a cheap prom dress. You know who else wore Donna Karan last night? Naya Rivera in that Elvira gown. Both of those women looked awful.

Modern Family won the actor for ensemble cast in a comedy, which comes right on the heels of their Golden Globe win this year for best television series – musical or comedy. Here’s Sofia clutching the award in the press room.

In contrast Julie Bowen wasn’t bad in this black leather Johanna Johnson v-neck gown with studded cap sleeves. I get what she was going for – rock and roll meets high fashion, and it’s not a failure of a dress. There’s something cool about it, although I admit that I like Julie so I’m willing to give her a pass. I didn’t like her messy ponytail, though, I thought she could have done something else with her hair.

Their cute costar, Sarah Hyland, was radiant in purple strapless Dolce & Gabbana. This dress is so pretty, and look at how perfect her makeup is. Overall she looks amazing.

And I’m throwing pregnant Busy Phillips in here at the end for lack of another place to put her. She was in a full-coverage full-length Gabriela Cadena gown and told Giuliana that she decided to show off her bump instead of hide it. She also revealed that she’s due in June. I liked that she went with such a fitted gown, that was a bold choice. I also liked her statement necklace. Her hair looked a little goofy to me all puffed up like that.

Gillian Anderson in a sexy LBD at the Critics Choice TV Awards: perfect?

Here we have some more photos from the Critics Choice TV Awards, which were last night in LA. Here’s a link to a complete list of winners, which made me happy as a few of my favorite shows won. As Kaiser mentioned in her earlier fashion coverage, “Community” was awarded best comedy and “Homeland” won best drama. (Kaiser got me into that show recently and I subscribed to Showtime and basically watched it on demand for a week straight. I couldn’t stop until it was finished.)

Gillian Anderson

Gillian Anderson was nominated for best actress in a movie or miniseries for her incredible performance in “Great Expectations.” I really enjoyed that adaptation on Masterpiece. (And did you see “Birdsong” too? Excellent.) That award went to Julianne Moore for “Game Change.” (You can see Julianne’s outfit in this earlier post.) Gillian was amazing looking in a sexy off-the-shoulder black dress with a sweetheart neckline. I love her silver and white shoes with diagonally placed straps, and her gorgeous drop earrings. More than that her styling is just incredible.

She’s probably had a little something something done to her face, she’s 43, but it’s subtle and almost perfect. Look at her skin, it’s glowing! Give me exactly what she’s having, in the same amounts. Also, in terms of her makeup, is she wearing those individual false lashes here? They don’t look overdone and I love her pink lips and cheeks.

Ginnifer Goodwin was annoyed-looking, as is usual for her, in an offbeat Viktor & Rolf gold and black scalloped striped sequin gown with a mesh v-neck cutout. How the hell do you describe this dress? I feel like I’m unable to do justice to it with mere words. This woman is always trying to wear fashion-forward dresses and just looking bizarre. Look at her shoes. They have bows on them. Bows!

Community and Mad Men’s Alison Brie wore this feathered black Oscar de La Renta creation which is pretty cute. It’s not a knockout dress, but I like her elegant styling and her simple black shoes. She’s so pretty here and it’s nice to see Annie’s Boobs under control for once. Alison was up for best supporting actress in a comedy, which went to Julie Bowen of “Modern Family.”

Busy Phillips was in a deep v-neck black floor length Michael Kors gown which is kind of lovely on her, especially compared to her past looks. I like her contrasting clunky green gemstone necklace, and her understated matching ring. Her cleavage is a little much, but I just love her effortless hair and makeup. Plus, as I always say, Busy’s enthusiasm for life kind of shines through in everything she does. She brings so much humor to everything that it’s infectious. Compare how she looks to sour-faced Ginnifer Goodwin and her “high fashion.” Enough said.

Katey Segal was wearing a dress which looked like a cross between a Bavarian barmaid outfit and Stella McCartney at her craziest. I haven’t found a designer ID on this one. It might have been ok without the puffy sleeves with the shoulders cut out, and without the strange “tail” trailing along the side. As is, it’s just a very ugly dress. Katey was there as she was nominated for best actress in a drama series, for her work in “Sons of Anarchy,” but that went to Claire Danes for “Homeland.”

Aaron Paul is just such an amazing actor and so nice to look at. I’m really looking forward to “Breaking Bad” coming back this year, and I just checked and it premieres sooner than I thought on July 15th! I’m excited but kind of sad about it too, as it’s the end for Walt and Jesse. Is it their true end? I’m rooting for Jesse and kind of hope Walt bites it. Aaron was up for best supporting actor, which went to his co-star Giancarlo Esposito. (Gus!) Brian Cranston (Walt) also won best actor, which will go on the shelf with his countless other awards for that role.

Here’s Aaron with his fiance, Lauren Parsekian.

Jessica Chastain in Prabal Gurung at the CFDAs: too precious or lovely?

Jessica Chastain
Why is it that Jessica Chastain’s boobs so often look weird, no matter what designer she’s wearing? Here are just a few examples. Like Zoe Saldana, Jessica wore Prabal Gurung to the CFDA Fashion Awards, Kaiser explained this event much better than I can. You know I love Jessica Chastain, I think I mention it every time I cover her. She may have been fudging her age (or not disclosing it) earlier this year, but that’s been corrected on her IMDB page and removed from her wiki page. Jessica didn’t exactly lie about her age, she just preferred not to have it out there. So I can’t begrudge her that, especially when she seems like such a decent person. She acts so grateful and genuinely happy to be on the red carpet. This is a woman who could look smug and arrogant like any number of her peers, but she just doesn’t. She radiates happiness and light. I could go on, and I’m trying to compensate for the fact that I really dislike that dress.

Jessica Chastain

The dress is just very young, precious and a little goofy with that sheer capelet at the shoulders and the bouncy skirt. It’s got the kind of bustline that should have been left in the 40s where it belongs. What’s going on with the band around the waist? Those gold shoes (also Prabal Gurung) with the glitter platform and the ankle straps just look awkward. Maybe a teenager would have looked cute in this dress, with much different shoes. I love her styling and makeup though. She’s a stunning woman.

Jessica Chastain

Speaking of awkward, here’s Busy Phillips in a Martin Margiela black jumpsuit. Like Jessica, I really enjoy seeing Busy. She has a great attitude and there’s a lot of humor in her style. I can’t trash this, even though it looks like there’s hair hanging off her boobs. She doesn’t care at all, does she?

Busy Phillips

Busy Phillips

Mandy Moore wore an ivory floor length Lela Rose gown. These dresses with the studded cap sleeves are inexplicably popular lately, but this isn’t bad. It’s a very elegant dress on Mandy. I really like her sleek hair and fuchsia lips and cheeks. Overall it’s a sophisticated and pretty look. In some of these photos, she’s showing a little leg, but she’s not doing a full Jolie. She could tilt her face down a little.

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore

Poor Gretchen Mol was just schlumpy looking (is that the correct use of the Yiddish word?) in a Sophie Theallet light blue (or mint?) skirt with asymmetric ruffles and an off white, off the shoulder top. Look at how high waisted her skirt is. Her horribly mismatched black gladiator shoes are “Manolo Blahnik for Sophie Theallet.” This makes me wonder: do these women just subject themselves to stylists and designers? Given the event, and how bad some of them looked, I would assume so. I think the shoes by the same designer are really throwing them off overall.

Gretchen Mol

Gretchen Mol

Dakota Fanning was in a kimono-look Proenza Schouler dress paired with shoes also by Schouler. Maybe some strappy shoes would have avoided the clunky look of the heavy dress paired with very heavy shoes. I’m not saying it affects the way her figure looks at all, she still looks very girlish under all those layers. It just looks like she’s playing dress up. She’s shown here with Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez.

Are Michelle Williams & Busy Phillips more than just platonic best friends?

As I said during this past awards season, I liked the idea of Michelle Williams bringing her BFF Busy Phillips as her “date” for the big events. I think they are truly best friends, and I think their friendship transcends Hollywood press and photo ops and image consulting and Oscar campaigns. I like that Michelle brought a girl-date who would be a lot of fun, and she wouldn’t have to think about the sexual politics of everything. So, what’s the problem? Well, first of all, Busy was Michelle’s date for everything! Like, Busy went everywhere with Michelle throughout January and February. Busy has a husband and a daughter, and it started to feel a little bit weird that Busy was always “on call” for Michelle. Second problem: Michelle’s Oscar campaign seemed to include a “second virginity clause” where Michelle acted like she was much too delicate to even allow a boy to touch her fragile body. In plain terms, she acted like her grief over Heath Ledger had re-virginized her. And it was sketchy.

Still, Busy and Michelle’s friendship took no hits. Michelle lost out on most awards, but whatever happened, Busy kept Michelle’s spirits up. Plus, Busy is a good enough friend to know that she could never look better, style-wise, than Michelle. So Busy always under-dressed. Perfect date! But just how perfect? Dun dun dun. The Enquirer claims that there are now “rumors” about Michelle and Busy’s “close” relationship:

Men come and go, but women who are best friends last forever! That’s the mottor of Michelle Williams, who is stuck like glue to Busy Phillips.

“Michelle and Busy have a mutual girl crush on each other,” an insider told The Enquirer. “They’re soul mates who do absolutely everything together. Lots of people whisper behind their backs, speculating that their relationship is more than just platonic. But they’re just the best of friends.”

Busy has been married to screenwriter Marc Silverstein since 2007, and they have a 3-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, Michelle is mother to daughter Matilda, age 6. Michelle has dated on and off since Heath Ledger’s death in 2008, like a post-Heath romance with indie director Spike Jonze. She was also recently spotted out with actor Jason Segel.

“But there’s nothing serious going on,” said the source, adding, “ Nothing will ever touch the feelings she had for Heath. He was the love of her life.”

Recently, Michelle sparked rumors when she took Busy as her date to several awards season events, but the source says: “The truth is that Michelle is reluctant to dive back into the dating scene… frankly, she’s more comfortable having Busy by her side.”

[From The Enquirer, print edition]

I think they probably are nonsexual-girlfriend soulmates. They seem to have a lot of love for each other, and I hope (hope hope) that it goes both ways between them – that Michelle listens to Busy’s problems as much as Busy is listening to Michelle’s problems, you know? So… yeah. Whatever. I don’t think Busy and Michelle are anything but best friends. As for Michelle being “reluctant to dive back into the dating scene”… for the love of God. She’s had several boyfriends since Heath died! Why is Michelle pretending like that never happened? The jig is up!

Critics Choice Fashion: Michelle Williams is gorgeous in black-and-white Chanel

As I mentioned before, I recently saw My Week With Marilyn, and I really was impressed with Michelle Williams’ performance. I’m not fighting with you about her anymore, at least not about her talent. She’s talented, and her work as Marilyn Monroe was solid-to-great. I’ll be pleased if Michelle ends up with another Oscar nomination for Best Actress. But I’ll be kind of disappointed if she wins – I don’t think she should win. It was a good enough movie overall for her to win. But I’m happy to see her at all of the awards shows.

So here’s Michelle at last night’s Critics Choice Awards, where she lost to Viola Davis (who owned it). Michelle went with Chanel, from the 2012 Resort collection. Michelle memorably wore Chanel to last year’s Oscars too, and I absolutely loved her Oscar gown. I’m not completely in love with this gown, but it’s okay. It fits her beautifully and I like that she went for monochromatic black-and-white rather than a wispy, delicate, fragile pastel or barely-there metallic.

As for her styling – meh. I’m still happy that her hair is darker, but the cut is still too short, I think. She needs to grow out those itty-bitty bangs. She can still have short hair, she should just have it, like, a shaggy Mick Jagger cut. I’d like to see her with a different lipstick color too, I think. But one word about Michelle’s skin: PERFECTION. She has beautiful skin!! It looks flawless here, and it looked flawless in My Week With Marilyn too.

Also – I’m pretty sure Busy Phillips was just there as Michelle’s date. Busy is often Michelle’s date at these events, and I think their friendship and girly date nights are super-cute.

Ashley Greene in leather and lace DKNY: pretty or very dated?

At last night’s People’s Choice Awards we saw the leather and lace trend rear its hideous head again. Several of you actually liked the ruffled leather and lace Valentino dress that Jessica Alba wore to a Globes party and said that it would have worked with different accessories and styling. I thought the dress was ugly in and of itself, but this is obviously a fashion trend that’s trying to stick.

Here we have Ashley Greene, in leather and lace DKNY that isn’t quite as ugly as Alba’s dress yesterday. It’s a more formfitting dress, and it also has a ridiculous ruffle at the hem. The lace neckline on this dress looks very similar to the dress I wore to my junior prom in 1990. It’s dated, it’s fug, but I’ll be damned in Ashley doesn’t look hot for the early 90s. She’s bringing back a lot of memories for me. Her hair and makeup are excellent and very polished, but would it kill her to try and hide the smug a little?

Here’s “Pretty Little Liars’” Lucy Hale, who didn’t get the memo that the flash-in-the-pan mullet dress trend is over. She’s wearing Cengiz Abazoglu with Sutra earrings and a Baccarat ring. She’s so pretty and this dress is so fug it’s distracting. Look at these ridiculous platform slingbacks. “Pretty Little Liars” won for favorite cable TV drama. (I saw a few episodes of the first season, but it just got too complicated for me.)

Also from “Pretty Little Liars” is Ashley Benson in a goofy, poofy white A-line dress with a black tulle underlay. The waist is too high, the dress looks very young, and the style does nothing for her. She looks so lovely on TV and really could have shone with some more adult styling. Her hair looks too young to me too. She’s 22, there’s no excuse for this.

I’m throwing in my girl Busy Phillips because I just love to see her. She usually doesn’t rock the red carpet, but she always looks thrilled to be there. I love the cut and style of this dress but the earrings and shoes are all wrong.

Update: here’s Kristen Bell, also in leather and lace but Valentino. I was originally going to add her to this post, but then I saw that she was at the premiere of The Grey last night in this same dress and I got confused. She actually wore it to both events. This look works for me. The skirt is A-line, not ruffled, the lace is subtle and hidden under a sheer overlay, and it’s sleeveless. Her hair is a little listless, but I like how understated her makeup is. I’m probably giving her a pass because she’s so nice.

Jessica Alba in leather Valentino: what was she thinking?

Jessica Alba’s red carpet style is usually hit or miss. Here we have a miss in a bizarre leather and chiffon Valentino dress. I really dislike both the striated ruffle skirt and the strange lace pattern around the wrists. I thought she had a tattoo there above her hand when I saw the smaller versions of these photos. She’s also carrying a Valentino clutch that looks more like a studded formal envelope it’s so large. We just saw Alba in a bikini so we know she can wear just about any style, why this? I’ll say something nice, I really like her hair and makeup. She looks effortlessly pretty and perfectly made up.

Alba was at an InStyle event leading up to the Golden Globes. Also there we have the lovely Nina Dobrev of Vampire Diaries. Whenever I see Nina I remember her amazing red dress at the Emmy Awards. She was in a pale peach and pink knee-length gown paired with a bright pink clutch. I like everything about this look except for the shoes. The color is off somehow, but still this is gorgeous.

Busy Phillips played it safe in a very plain black dress with a see-through neckline and t-strap heels. Her hair is looking a little beat, although I like that new color on her. I can’t nitpick Busy. She always looks so damn happy to be wherever she is that she’s become one of my favorites.

Just yesterday we saw American Horror Story’s Alexandra Breckenridge looking a little trashy in a too-tight too-short backless dress that looked more club wear than something you would bring to the red carpet. She was a little more demure last night, but the pattern on that dress is just overwhelmingly busy and fug. If you look closely, you can see the circles around her boobs and the triangle at her lady parts. Classy.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Pucci at the Film Awards: hot or bizarre?

fp_8070915_rij_hollywood_aw
Kaiser has already covered some of the fashion at last night’s Hollywood Film Awards, including Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan and George Clooney and Stacy Keibler. She’ll be mentioning Anne Hathaway and Emma Stone in a moment. Here we have a few of the other celebrities that lit up the red carpet. No one really impressed me except for Julianne Hough and Viola Davis.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley tried to work a intricately beaded Pucci gown and kind of failed, in my opinion. She’s so hot and she’s gotten it absolutely right so many times in the past. It’s kind of refreshing to see her with messy pulled back hair, minimal makeup and a dress that makes her look more like a rare exotic bird than one of the hottest models around. Even the chick who gets to sleep with Jason Statham looks like crap once in a while.

fp_8070918_rij_hollywood_aw

hollywood_film_awards_037_w

Elle Fanning, still just 13 years old(!), wore a very conservative off white Valentino dress that could pass as a tablecloth. She accented the look with a Heidi braid. It’s kind of sweet for a kid and while I’m not a fan of the dress, I like that she’s covered up.

fp_8070944_rij_hollywood_aw

fp_8070946_rij_hollywood_aw

Julianne Hough really shone in a tight beige dress with a sequin swirl pattern and a deep v-neck that went nearly to her belly button. In theory I don’t like this dress and find her matchy shoes too much. On her though it worked and she looked amazing. Love her hair and makeup.

hollywood_film_awards_078_w

hollywood_film_awards_077_w

Amber Heard vamped it up in a blue silk dress with a dramatic bodice slit. I thought we were about to see sideboob, but it didn’t materialize. As we’ve seen in the past from her, the color seems a little off, but I think it’s more her hair color this time than the colors in her dress. Her hair and makeup are phenomenal though.

hollywood_film_awards_094_w

hollywood_film_awards_097_w

Busy Phillips was goofy in an updo and a tight black dress with a sequin boob window. I still love her though. She always looks like she’s having so much fun and would be a blast to be around.

fp_8070873_rij_hollywood_aw

fp_8070872_rij_hollywood_aw

Bryce Dallas Howard does not get a pregnancy pass for this mess. She has no boob support, the dress looks like a nightie, and she may have gone for the soft wave look with her hair but the result is no better than an air dry. Her jewelry and shoes look cheap too. Get it together, Bryce!

Sara Rue showed off her body by Jenny Craig in a purple formfitting gown that was the same shade as Stacy Keibler’s dress. She lost a lot of weight and looks different due to that of course, but what did she do to her face? I get the impression that she had some work done.

hollywood_film_awards_021_w

Viola Davis was one of the best dressed of the night in this off-the shoulder jade flowing gown that she accessorized perfectly. She’s so well put together without going overboard.

Katherine Heigl at the Elle Women in Hollywood event: much improved or manic?

fp_8036693_rij_elle_women_5
We’re covering the fashion of last night’s Elle’s Women in Hollywood event in three different posts as there were so many celebrities there. Kaiser has already mentioned Jennifer Aniston’s hot dress along with some of the other big names, Like Reese Witherspoon and Evan Rachel Wood. I’ll be covering some of the other celebrities here along with my favorite TV personalities.

First off we have Katherine Heigl in a beaded little black dress. It’s a bit “mature” looking, but it’s not bad at all for her. She looks very good, if kind of crazed here. I like what she’s done with her short hair too. Her husband Josh Kelly came with her and looked almost as thrilled to be there. After seeing these photos, I’m convinced that things are fine with them.

fp_8036686_rij_elle_women_5

fp_8036689_rij_elle_women_5

Jayma Mays in a one-shoulder ruched blue dress with ruffle detail. Compared to some of the horribly frumpy things she’s worn on the red carpet, this was a vast improvement. Her hair is gorgeous and that sideswept looked is popular now. Her eye makeup is a little overdone, but overall this was a win for Jayma.

fp_8036647_rij_elle_women_1

fp_8036646_rij_elle_women_1

Busy Phillips looked a little goofy with that very tight, very high little bun on her head. I want to give her a pass for just looking so happy and cute though. She’s adorable in this very simple black dress paired with silver jewelry. What was she thinking with those purple shoes?

fp_8036644_rij_elle_women_0

fp_8036643_rij_elle_women_0

Matthew McConaughey’s squeeze Camila Alves had her pose on in a navy blue polka dot retro-style dress. She used to be a model, so I guess that could explain her sourpuss face. I love the dress, hair and makeup. The shoes and purse aren’t my favorite.

fp_8036657_rij_elle_women_2

fp_8036655_rij_elle_women_2

Erika Christensen of “Parenthood” looked really drab. I love her on that show, she’s one of my favorite actresses. What happened to her here? I wear more makeup and do more to my hair to go to the store on a daily basis. She’s a Scientologist I’m sorry to say, but she was raised in it. Also, here’s her date:

fp_8036710_rij_elle_women_7

fp_8036709_rij_elle_women_7

fp_8037747_christensen_erik

In contrast, Gillian Jacobs from another one of my shows, “Community,” was way overdone. The bottom half of that dress would be cute with a nice solid color panel at the top, but the contrasting patterns and colors are just ridiculous. Paired with that makeup and poofy hair and she looks unhinged.

fp_8036640_rij_elle_women_0

fp_8036478_rij_elle_women_0

Amber Heard, Johnny Depp’s costar in the upcoming Rum Diaries, was a study in color. I’m perplexed at how an otherwise gorgeous girl can pair a form-fitting pepto pink dress with matte scarlet lips, brown eyeshadow, too-yellow hair and black t-strap heels and end up looking like this. It’s like all the lovely parts are there, but they don’t work together.

fp_8036700_rij_elle_women_6

fp_8036698_rij_elle_women_6

Elizabeth Olsen wore a silver tent-like Calvin Klein gown. It doesn’t do much for her, but I love how genuinely happy she looks here, and her makeup is so striking.

fp_8036668_rij_elle_women_3

fp_8036667_rij_elle_women_3

Abigail Breslin is still only 15! I can’t believe it, as I had to look it up and assumed she was 17-something by now. She had on a very tasteful loose orange dot dress paired with a canary colored clutch and nude heels. She’s wearing too much makeup for her age, but she looks cute here.

fp_8036760_rij_elle_women_1

fp_8036759_rij_elle_women_1

Naomi Watts in a nude-colored v-neck gown. The color washes her out, but she looks so hot. I love her hair and makeup, except her mascara is really clumpy. That’s happened to me when I let a makeup counter person do my mascara. I expect Naomi had something similar happen with her makeup artist.
