New photos of Matthew McConaughey, Camila and baby Levi

OK! Magazine has posted many more photos of proud dad Matthew McConaughey, his newborn son, Levi, and Levi’s mom Camila Alves. The new family looks so cute and you can tell that Matt will be an involved and attentive dad.

Yesterday our new writer Sammie covered Matthew McConaughey’s full interview in OK! She mentioned that there was a sidebar in the article that said that “OK! made a donation to the j.k. livin foundation on behalf of Matthew, Camila and Levi.” It was hard to tell from that statement whether an additional donation was made or Matthew gave all of the baby photo money to his foundation. I would bet that it all went to charity and that McConaughey kept it quiet.

Thanks to OK! for these photos, where there are many more. You can also still find the magazine with higher-quality versions in many US stores.

Matthew McConaughey may have given all the OK! baby photo money to his charity

Fatherhood certainly hasn’t made Matthew McConaughey any less bohemian-surfer-dude-cool, if his recent interview with OK! Weekly is any indication.

Matthew and Camila are building a new home; Levi is staying in their room now
Matthew and girlfriend Camila Alves welcomed son Levi on July 7. OK! visited them at their home in Malibu on July 17. Baby gifts, including a baby-sized wet suit, were scattered around the living room. The couple are building a new home a few doors down, which is a step up from Matthew’s preferred shelter of an RV. He is even involved in the construction.

MATTHEW: It’s very customized. We’re involved in every step. It will be ready new year-ish.
CAMILA: This is our dream house.

[From OK!, print edition, August 4, 2008]

They currently don’t have a nursery. Levi has a “little set up” in the bedroom with them, and they have a changing station.

True to form, Matthew was still wearing the ID bracelet from Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, even 10 days after the birth.

It’s not a sentimental thing. My mom’s maiden name is on there: Kay McCabe. That’s how we were registered in the hospital. So it says Boy Kay McCabe. I noticed for the first time yesterday that I was still wearing it, but I’ve been a little busy.

Although the couple didn’t officially know the sex of the baby from their doctor, Matthew says he knew when Camila first told him she was pregnant that it would be a boy.

I had tears of joy and was not shocked or surprised, just overwhelmed. My first words were, “It’s a boy,” and without thinking, she said, “I know.”

Then when he first saw the baby:

I said, “Come here, little man.” I saw the pecker and screamed that we’d been right all along about him being a boy.

Levi was planned
Matthew doesn’t seem like a big planner, but Levi was not an accident. They had talked about it many times, and Matthew says he has dreamed of becoming a dad since he was 10. He whistled the theme song that Christian Bale whistles in “Empire of the Sun” to Levi in the womb. I haven’t seen that film, but Levi may be lucky not to be named Empire. Or Mr. Zog.

The birth itself was quite a long ordeal. They were in the hospital for 59 and 1/2 hours before Levi arrived, and Camila was in labor for 14 hours. Matthew’s description of the labor is strangely poetic but a little sexual, and we covered it when advance details of the interview came out.

It sounds like Matthew is going to apply his nude-bongo-playing mentality to parenting, and Camila doesn’t mind.

MATTHEW: I’ll still hopefully take solo surf trips. She’ll take solo trips. Each one of us, myself, herself, and eventually Levi, it is very important that you have your own place. You have to play your solo.
CAMILA: Even in the house, I have my space and he has his space….
MATTHEW: This kid has a lot to learn from us. I want him to come out being a little wiser, a little cooler and a little happier than we are.

Matthew suggests they’re not getting married anytime soon

OK: Is marriage on the table?
MATTHEW: We’re happy just how we are.

Matthew either gave some or all of the OK! money to his charity, it’s unclear
With all the stars getting paid for their baby pictures, it’s nice to see Matthew going the charity route, at least in part. Matthew reportedly got $3 million for the pictures, but OK! says they made a donation to Matthew’s foundation. There was a sidebar in the article that described Matthew’s nonprofit organization and at the bottom it said “OK! made a donation to the j.k. livin foundation on behalf of Matthew, Camila and Levi.” It’s hard to tell whether that means that the full $3 million went to his charity or if an additional donation was made.

This interview was with both Matthew and Camila, although Matthew is obviously much more quotable. Camila seems pretty straight-forward and mostly makes one-sentence clarifications after Matthew raps about tribal jamming during labor. He sounds like he was amazed and involved at the whole process, and will be a very cool (if somewhat permissive) father. Levi will probably be surfing before he can walk.

Matthew McConaughey describes “bloody, primeval” birth scene

Matthew McConaughey, his girlfriend Camila Alves, and their two week old baby, Levi are featured on the upcoming issue of OK!. The interview with McConaughey inside the magazine is colorful and detailed. Unlike other celebrities who give vague positive statements about their childbirth and say everything is wonderful with the new baby, McConaughey paints a gory picture of the birth room and revels in the sensory details. He describes a sweaty scene in which he was coaching Camila through the contractions and playing Brazilian music. He says that Camila was hoping for a natural childbirth without an epidural but that doctors told her she needed a c-section after what sounds like minor complications. He also reveals that he was so happy to learn they had a boy since they thought it was a boy all along and didn’t know the sex ahead of time.

“We found a great rhythm,” Matthew tells OK! about the delivery of baby Levi. “Contractions started kicking in. I sat there with her, right between her legs. We got tribal on it, we danced to it! I was DJ-ing this Brazilian music.”

Levi was born at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and weighed a healthy 7 lbs., 4 oz., and Matthew tells OK! he kept a detailed diary of his and Camila’s hospital experience.

“I have it all chronicled,” he explained. “Becoming a dad is something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was 10. Becoming a father felt very, very natural. We were jamming! She was sweating. No painkiller, let’s go. She just clicked into that gear that only a woman has at a time like this. We’d been up for 40-something hours, and we went from dead tired to a really steadfast, ‘Let’s handle this… let’s stay in the rhythm. Don’t let the contraction be more than you.’”

Camila, 25, wanted a natural birth and chose not to have an epidural. But in the end, Matthew told OK! it came down to what was safest for both mom and baby.

“We ended up having an epidural because, on the large contractions, the umbilical cord was being compressed. They went in and tried the vacuum. This is where I learned — and no one tells you this — but having a baby is a bloody, pukey, sweaty, primeval thing! And I mean that as a beautiful thing. It is wild. But the vacuum didn’t work, and the doctor said, ‘C-section.’

The Texas-born actor says he cut the umbilical cord in “one snip” and got to hold his son for the first 15 minutes while doctors worked on Camila. Both he and the Brazilian beauty — who waited to know the sex of their baby — say they were not surprised to find out they had a boy.

“I said, ‘Come here, little man. I saw the pecker and screamed that we’d been right all along about him being a boy. Then I brought him over to her [Camila],’ Matthew said.

“It was neat to find out what the sex was because we didn’t have the doctor tell us beforehand,” Camila agrees.

So who does little Levi look more like? “Everybody thinks he looks like me because of the hair and skin tone,” Camila says. “I think he looks more like Matthew every day.”

Matthew adds, “I’ve pulled out some baby pictures of myself, and the resemblance is amazing. This kid has a lot to learn from us. I want him to come out being a little wiser, a little cooler and a little happier than we are.”

[From OK! Magazine]

McConaughey is going to be a great dad. He’s so enthusiastic and into the whole experience and it’s refreshing to read such a visceral account of a birth instead of the bland happy descriptions we usually see. I’m looking forward to reading the whole interview and seeing more photos of newborn Levi. That little guy sure is cute. Doesn’t he look like he’s doing the karate baby pose here?

Matthew McConaughey proposed to Camila after she gave birth

Matthew McConaughey proposed to his girlfriend (and mother of his son) hours after she gave birth, according to the National Enquirer. They say that after he held his son for the first time he wanted to get married. Which makes a lot of sense; I’m sure it’s a very emotional experience. The two are keeping the information under wraps for a while.

Hollywood playboy Matthew McConaughey has been tamed at last! And all it took was a tiny 7 pound, 4 ounce baby boy to finally persuade the “Fool’s gold” star to say goodbye to his bachelor days. Matthew popped the question to Brazilian stunner Camila Alves, 25, just hours after she gave birth to their son, Levi, on July 7, The Enquirer has learned. And she said yes!

“Camila was absolutely overjoyed – a baby and a marriage proposal on the same day,” revealed an insider. “It was magic.” The source said once Matthew held little Levi, he knew that marriage was the next step. Matt’s privately been diamond shopping, and he wants Camila to design her own engagement ring, the insider added. They aren’t announcing their marriage plans yet – and just like they sold the first photos of their baby, it’s possible they’ll try to cash in on the wedding.

…”The baby made Matthew realize that Camila and Levi are now his No. 1 priority – and nothing else in the world matters.” While they haven’t set a date, Matthew hopes to be married by Christmas, the insider said. “It will probably be something small and intimate. They want to get married on a beach at sunset.”

[From the Enquirer, July 28 2008, print ed.]

A beach at sunset sounds very Matthew McConaughey. Then again, so does the idea of him wearing a coconut bra. But it fits with his whole relaxed surfer dude vibe. I’m kind of surprised he ended up being so traditional, but it is very sweet. Matt and Camila seem very happy together, and like they’re going to make great parents. I bet they’ll manage to get married in private and tell OK! Magazine about it the next week or something.

Here’s Matthew and a friend walking to a movie studio in L.A. on Monday. Header of Matt and Camila in May – Matt committed the cardinal celeb sin of wearing the same shirt twice (gasp!!). Images thanks to WENN.

Matthew McConaughey gets $3 million for first photos of baby Levi

I’ve decided that my long-term financial plan is to either be famous or marry someone famous, and then pop out as many kids as I can so I can sell their photos to OK! and In Touch for a couple million each. I won’t act or sing or anything once I have the kids. I’ll just use childbirth as a way to make a lot of money. Sure my plan is fraught with holes, but I think it’s still the most solid thing I’ve come up with in months. And considering how much money celebs are raking in for their newborns, why wouldn’t this be a good idea?

Matthew McConaughey’s lil’ bundle of joy will be making Matt a big bundle of jack.

Our spies tell us OK! mag will shell out $3 mil for the first pics of young Levi, who was just born Monday night. And that’s not all — we’re told that the deal includes baby’s first Christmas as well.

We also hear OK! gets first right to the pics of the wedding if Matt and Cam get married — though they’ll have to pay extra for those snaps.

[From TMZ]

OK! also had the exclusive first comments from Matthew about Levi’s birth, along with an explanation of the baby’s name.

Pre-selling baby’s first Christmas is pretty masterful. Doesn’t that sound like a cute ornament to put on the tree? There can be the traditional carriage ornament for baby’s first big holiday, and then another one shaped like a dollar bill that says “Baby’s First $500,000 in the bank.” How sweet. TMZ doesn’t make any mention of what Matt and longtime girlfriend Camila Alves plan on doing with the cash. Hopefully they’ll either donate it to a charity or put it away for baby Levi.

I’m still wondering what celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, and Christina Aguilera did with their hefty baby photo millions. Unlike a lot of other celebs, I haven’t heard any mention of the money going to good deeds, which makes me think it’s probably going into luxury real estate or handbags.

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves named their baby “Levi”

Now that OK! Magazine has the exclusive first story that Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have named their first child Levi, I think there’s little doubt that we can look forward to seeing the baby’s debut in the pages of OK!.

I figured Matt might name his kid after some moderately obscure God of leisure, but no, he named him after the world’s most famous brand of jeans. They have a biblical explanation for choosing the name, though, and Matt explains that Levi is another name for the apostle Matthew, and that his son was born at a very significant time. Alves is Levi’s middle name, and he will not have a hyphenated last name.

Explaining how they came up with the name for their baby boy, Matthew tells OK!, “Levi was another name for the apostle Matthew in The Bible. They were, in fact, two names for the same person.

“Our son was born at 6:22 pm, and this particular time represents my favorite verse in the book of Matthew in The Bible: ‘If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be full of light.’”

Baby Levi’s middle name is taken directly from his mother Camila’s last name. “We wanted to incorporate her family name,” explains the proud new father.

To all the well-wishers and fans, Matthew and Camila have also released the following statement:

“We welcome Levi Alves McConaughey into this wonderful life and look forward to living in it with him. In the mean time and all times, just keep livin’.”
—Matthew David McConaughey and Camila Maria Saraiva de Araujo Alves

[From OK! Magazine]

Camila’s full name is so regal-sounding. I love those multiple South American names, like in a Gabriel García Marquéz novel.

Considering that Matt has an older brother who named his kid “Miller Lyte” in a warped tribute to his favorite brand of beer, Levi isn’t that bad a choice. It’s like Matt figured he may as well honor his jeans as well as the bible. Because kids bring an element of the sacred to everyday life.

Congratulations to Matthew David McConaughey and Camila Maria Saraiva de Araujo Alves on their new arrival, Levi Alves McConaughey.

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have a baby boy (update: Matt’s statement)

Matthew McConaughey’s son and Nicole Kidman’s daughter, Sunday, share the same Monday birthday of 7/7/08. Matthew and his girlfriend, Brazilian model Camila Alves, welcomed a baby boy at 6:22 p.m. in LA yesterday, reports People Magazine. McConaughey’s rep confirmed the birth, and said the newborn weighed 7 lbs., 4 oz. There is no word yet as to the baby’s name.

In recent interviews McConaughey spoke candidly about looking forward to being a father and having an active role in his child’s life. He called fatherhood his next journey, saying “to be the architect of a little creature’s life is my next big adventure and I can’t wait for it to begin.” When asked what he’s looking forward to he said “every single day” and that he’ll definitely be changing diapers. Matthew seems like he’ll be an attentive and enthusiastic dad.

Congratulations to Camila and Matthew and best wishes for a wonderful life with their new addition.

Update: OK! Magazine had this exclusive statement from Matthew McConaughey. Do you think that means they’ve already negotiated a deal for the photos?

“A healthy baby boy was born,” Matthew tells OK! in an exclusive statement. “Camila and I were side by side the entire time. We are both tired and elated, and are so happy to have created the greatest miracle in the world — Having a child and making a family. Now comes the greatest adventure — raising one, together.”

[From OK!]

Update 2: The baby’s name is Levi Alves McConaughey. Here’s a story with more details on why Matt chose the name.

Matthew McConaughey and his pregnant girlfriend, Camila Alves

Matthew McConaughey and his girlfriend, Camila Alves, were seen out at a Houston Dodgers/Los Angeles Astros baseball game in LA on Mother’s Day. Camila was holding a pink baseball bat from the gift shop, which might indicate that she’s expecting a girl. Camila is due in July.

OK! Magazine reports that Matt plans to be a stay at home dad and has cleared his work schedule to be there for the baby:

“Matt joked if he wasn’t careful he’s wake up bald and old and having missed out on years of his kid’s life that he couldn’t get back,” a friend of the actor tells OK!.

Matthew, 38, hopes to be Mr. Mom after model-fiancee Camila Alves, 24, gives birth this summer. “He’s intent on being there for his kid the way his parents were for him,” says the friend.

“Camila’s enjoying the idea of having him around. The two are busy picking out baby names!”

[From OK! Magazine, print edition, May 19, 2008 via The Bosh]

Star Magazine reported in its recent issue that McConaughey would do pushups and workout between scenes on the set of his film Ghosts of Girlfriends Past in Boston this April. They quote a witness who says “He’d jump down and do a set of push-ups. He was dressed really nice, but he didn’t seem to care!”

McConaughey is also rumored to be in consideration for the lead of Captain America in an upcoming film version of the popular comic.

There’s not a lot of gossip about Matt because he’s been laying low and staying in with his girlfriend as they prepare for their new baby. Congratulations to them. McConaughey certainly seems excited about their upcoming arrival, and he’s sure to be a devoted father.

Matthew McConaughey says girlfriend Camila can also go without a shower for a week

Matthew McConaughey’s gorgeous pregnant girlfriend, Camila Alves, seems to share his lackadaisical approach to personal hygiene. McConaughey is known for going au natural and has not worn deodorant in 20 years. He told Playboy magazine that he refused to put on a rock crystal deodorant that his costar Kate Hudson tried to get him to wear while they were filming Fool’s Gold.

Now In Touch is reporting that part of the reason that Matthew loves his pregnant girlfriend, Bralizian model Camila, is because she can also go without a shower for a week. Lest you think they’re making that up, it’s an actual quote from one of Camila’s business associates on her new handmade leather purse line:

“He said he finally met a girl who can go without a shower for a week – someone he can go mountain climbing and hiking with,” Pamela DePalma, president of DePalma Enterprises, which represents Camila’s new venture MUXO handbags tells In Touch. “Camila is incredibly easygoing.”

[From In Touch, print edition, March 24, 2008]

Camila’s business associate also says that it was McConaughey who first noticed Camila and asked her to have a drink with him.

“He chose her, she didn’t chose him,” she adds. “She was at a restaurant in LA and he walked up to her. He introduced himself, and said he would love to have her come join him for his favorite drink – a margarita – and they had a great friendship to star.”

And In Touch also talked to Camila’s manager, who hinted that a surprise marriage might be in the cards for the stinky sweethearts:

But with the baby due in July, the couple have no been talking about tying the knot. Camila’s manager, Shabi Shahryar, tells In Touch: “You never know. I mean, the pregnancy was a surprise, so why not a surprise marriage?”

McConaughey is excited to be a father and is serving as Camila’s Lamaze coach. He says he’s going to be a hands-on dad and will change diapers. It sounds like their child won’t be forced to take a bath as often as the average kid, and he or she will probably be grateful for that. I know that my son hates getting his hair washed and will do just about anything to avoid it.

You can see Camila’s new handbag line, Muxo, at MyMuxo.com. They’re all hand crafted by Camila and her mother and take from 5 to 8 hours each to complete. Pricing starts at $450 for a clutch. Camila is carrying the “crock” bag in the header image, but it’s made of leather, not crocodile. [No one paid or encouraged us to write that]

Camila Alves is shown outside a spa appointment on March 1, thanks to Splash News.
