BAFTAs wrap-up: winners, losers & Clive Owen

bafta_pressroom_58_wenn2748948

Last night, the annual BAFTA awards were held in London. The BAFTAs are like the English Oscars, and the bigger awards generally go to British stars or behind-the-camera talent, although the occasional American or other nationality has won, of course. Before I talk about the actual awards given and received, two pop-culture things of note happened last night – one, that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were at the same awards show, but didn’t “go” together. They posed separately on the red carpet, and Kristen took home the “Rising Star” BAFTA and posed in the press room alone. The second was pretty interesting too – Prince William showed up to present one of the awards, and he was pretty much the biggest star there. Kate Middleton did not attend.

As for the actual awards, it looks like Colin Firth (A Single Man) and Carey Mulligan (An Education) took home the Lead acting awards. Kathryn Bigelow took home Best Director honors for The Hurt Locker (the award was presented by Clive “Oh My God You Look So F-cking Hot” Owen) and that film won best picture. Mo’Nique and Christoph Waltz took Best Supporting honors. A full list of BAFTA winners is here, and here’s more from People:

It was a night to remember for Twi-hards and royal fans at the Orange British Academy Awards in London, as Prince William was announced BAFTA’s new President and Kristen Stewart won the “Orange Rising Star” award with Robert Pattinson in the audience.

While Twilight’s hot couple arrived separately on the red carpet, both to loud cheers, it was Prince William signing autographs that caused the biggest frenzy on the way in to the star-studded ceremony at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

The young royal attended solo – minus girlfriend Kate Middleton – opened the ceremony with a heartfelt speech on his new BAFTA appointment. “This is such a privilege for me,” he said adding, “I have to say, there is nothing better than going to see a really good film so this is a great personal thrill for me.”

Prince William follows in the footsteps of his grandfather in accepting the high-profile arts role.

Later in the evening, Colin Firth scooped the Leading Actor award for his role in A Single Man and thanked his friend and director, Tom Ford, for believing in him. “An encounter with Tom Ford is to come away feeling resuscitated, a little more worldly, better groomed, more fragrant and more nominated than one has ever been before.”

Carey Mulligan won the Leading Actress award for An Education. In a stunning floral dress, the Brit-born actress tearfully told reporters that the BAFTA recognition meant “everything to me,” and that it would be kept in the UK, “probably at my parents house, in their living room.”

The war drama The Hurt Locker picked up the most awards, taking home six in total, including Best Film.

The evening ended with Prince William and Uma Thurman presenting the Academy Fellowship award to Vanessa Redgrave who gave an emotional speech and received a standing ovation from her peers and her family including her daughter, Joely Richardson.

[From People Magazine]

I’m very happy that Colin Firth won something for A Single Man. He’s been up for every major award, but has yet to win anything because it’s The Year of Jeff Bridges. No disrespect at all to Jeff whatsoever, but I think Colin is wonderful and deserving too. I’m also surprised that The Hurt Locker won so big at the BAFTAs – I thought James Cameron was liked in England, but maybe not. Oh, and I can’t believe Prince William presented something to Vanessa Redgrave and she managed not to say something political about the royal family. Shocking!

Shia LaBeouf makes out with his girlfriend’s nose

fp_4022610_wallstreet_aar_111609

Shia LeBeouf is killing me in these pictures. How sweet does he look? He’s making out with (or tonguing the nose of) British actress Carey Mulligan, his costar in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps and his current real-life girlfriend. Shia was filming on the streets of New York on Monday, November 16, and Carey dropped in to see him. So he decided to make out with her nose.

Last month, Shia rather infamously threw a hissy fit at Carey’s big premiere of An Education, the film that’s got her some early Oscar buzz. According to eyewitnesses, Shia sat at the bar drinking whiskey, then “cornered Mulligan and did all sorts of arm-raising and angry-facing before storming off into the night.” Allegedly, Carey has also had to deal with Shia’s wandering eye too. So I had my worries about this young couple. Why does Carey put up with him? Perhaps she made him promise to kiss her nose every day. Perhaps she made him grovel for his apology for attempting to ruin her special night. Who knows? They seem to be going strong now.

Carey is still out promoting An Education, and she told the Hollywood Reporter that Shia encourages her to enjoy her moment: “Shia tells me to enjoy it. He says I can get upset about the photographers, but by the end of the day 98% of it should be positive.” It sounds like Carey has a good head on her shoulders, and she seems generally like a more well-adjusted, healthy young woman. Perhaps that goodness will rub off on Shia? I hope so. I want to love him.

Shia LaBeouf has a hissy fit at new gf Carey Mulligan’s premiere

an education prem nyc 051009
I’ve been a little bit in love with Shia LaBeouf ever since I saw his interview on the Today show several months ago, while he was promoting Transformers. Meredith Viera brought one of Shia’s fangirls on the show, and Shia was so unbelievably sweet and gentle with his fan, I kind of fell in love with him. Since then, I’ve been giving him the benefit of the doubt about almost everything, even those quotes about how he finds his mom ridiculously sexy. But now I’m fearing my crush is in serious danger.

In August, people started noticing that Shia was spending a lot of time with his Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps costar, British actress Carey Mulligan. Carey sort of admitted in a recent interview that they had begun dating pretty much as soon as they met (read Carey’s full interview at the Huffington Post). They make an adorable couple, and I had high hopes for them. But it looks like Shia LaBeouf may be seriously douchey in relationships. There has been two separate reports of his jerky behavior this week, and I’m starting to see a pattern.

The first report was a small blurb on Gatecrasher about Shia’s “wandering eye”. According to their source, while Shia and Carey were hanging out on the street in New York, “Shia was blatantly ogling a pretty brunette, and his girlfriend was standing right next to him! What a dog!” Okay, it could just be an isolated incident, right? And even then, a guy can be totally committed to the love of his life, and he’s still going to look at other women, so it’s not that big of a deal. Alas, here’s another story about Shia being a douche, this time at Carey’s big premiere last night for An Education:

At last night’s premiere of An Education, burgeoning star Carey Mulligan was shining in all her chic, cute glory — until her liquor-swilling boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf, picked a lovers’ spat!

Earlier in the night, Mulligan had mused longingly on the suburban gentlemen in her sixties period piece: “I love the way the men dress [in the film],” she told us. “They just look so chivalrous. It’s so nice to have a door held open for you. And they do it when they’ve got their hats on. In real life they don’t always do that.”

No, it appears they don’t, as LaBeouf — who wouldn’t talk to us, even though we were all excited to ask him if he’s ever had an affair with an old person, like his girlfriend’s character in the film — was drinking his own whiskey at the wine bar.

Outside the party, seemingly hidden from the view of paps (but not Intel!), LaBeouf cornered Mulligan and did all sorts of arm-raising and angry-facing before storming off into the night.

Watching the spat, we wondered if this will be one of those moments Mulligan looks back on when she wonders where if their relationship went awry. The night he picked that fight at my big premiere, she’ll think. Anyway, Mulligan — who remained composed throughout the talk — patted her dress down, held her head high, and walked back inside the premiere party. We can see what Anna Wintour likes about this girl.

[From New York Magazine]

Urgh. Dude… why? Why, Shia? Why pick a fight with your cute girlfriend in the middle of her big premiere? You should be chilled out and supporting her – after all, you (Shia) have the bigger career, what with Transformers and Indiana Jones and all of those films that Steven Spielberg’s throwing at your feet. Let her have the spotlight for one night, for the love of God.

Was this about his ego? Was she ignoring him to do her publicity duties, and he got bitchy and nasty? Or was this just a small little incident that got blown up by the media? You know what just occurred to me – I’ll bet the make-up sex was great after the premiere.

Shia LaBeouf is shown on NY set of Wall St on 9/30/09. Carey Mulligan is shown on 10/5 (black dress, brown belt) and 10/1 (print dress) at the NY and LA premieres of An Education with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Maggie’s husband, Peter Sarsgaard. Credit: WENN.com

New Couple: Shia LaBeouf & British elfin beauty Carey Mulligan

Shia LaBeouf has a new girlfriend – allegedly. Lainey was reporting it yesterday, and this morning it was Gatecrasher, so it’s probably so on! Shia hasn’t been rumored to be dating anyone other than Megan Fox over the past several months, and I think the chances are pretty good that if he and Megan did have a fling (likely, in my opinion), they’re over now. She’s back with Whats-His-Guts David Silver, Brian Austin Green. Meanwhile, Shia has stepped into greener pastures and found himself a girl that resembles an adorable woodland elf. Her name is Carey Mulligan, and she’s the 24-year-old British actress who was cast as Gordon Gekko’s daughter (and Shia’s love interest) in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps:

Romance is blossoming for Shia LaBeouf and his “Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps” co-star Carey Mulligan.

The hot new couple were spotted kissing and cuddling over drinks at West Village eatery Extra Virgin on Sunday afternoon – until British gal Mulligan realized she was being watched and began to hide her face.

Tsk, tsk, Shia – hasn’t anyone ever told you not to mix business and pleasure? Reps for LaBeouf and Mulligan didn’t respond to calls for comment.

[From Gatecrasher]

Well, they’re both young and single, so why not get it on? If I was working with Shia, I’d probably try to hit it too. Going back to Carey… I had to look her up on IMDB to figure out who she was. She’s actually something of a hot young thing in Britain, and she has been working solidly the past five years. I know her from two projects – the Keira Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice, in which Carey played a very cute, dimpled Kitty Bennett; and the underrated 2005 BBC miniseries of Bleak House, where Carey played the second female lead, Ada Clare. Now that I know who she is, I whole-heartedly approve. Shia is probably in heaven with this British beauty.

Here’s Carey Mulligan at the premiere of ‘The September Issue’ at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on August 19th and at the Los Angeles Film Festival premiere of ‘Public Enemies’ Premiere on June 23rd. Shia is shown at the festival’s “Transformers” premiere on June 22nd. Images thanks to WENN.com .
