Avril Lavigne & Chad Kroeger in leather at the Billboard Awards: hilarious?

Here we have some of the lesser fashion from last night’s Billboard Awards. We’ll have more coming up for you shortly. Taylor Swift was the big winner and took home eight awards! She won for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Female Artist of the Year among others. In this post we’re talking about some of the lesser celebrities and musicians, and who better to start with than engaged Canadian couple Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger? Neither of these two was nominated for anything, although Avril was a presenter. She wore her best black leather strapless mini-dress paired with ridiculous black gladiator shoes and a few extra applications of liquid eyeliner. She accessorized with stacks of rhinestone (I’m guessing) bracelets and a giant cocktail ring to balance out her huge pear-shaped engagement ring. These two look perfect for each other, don’t they?

Also in black we have Hayden Panettiere, who was unfortunately not accompanied by her hulk of a man, boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko. We’ve heard for weeks that Hayden and Wladimir are engaged and yet she hasn’t been wearing a ring. They were just spotted together last week, so I’m not suggesting there’s trouble, just that I bet Wladimir isn’t as gung-ho about getting married as sources would like us to believe.

Hayden is in Halston Heritage. That’s a gorgeous dress that flatters her but it’s a little conservative for this event. I love her styling! Check out the little gems in her hair and her very understated blush-colored makeup accented with green eyeshadow. She’s so pretty.

Jennifer Morrison is also in black, in one of the unfortunate trends of the night – see through gowns. She’s in a designer I’ve never heard of before, Kristian Aadnevik, and this dress is just awful. It looks like something out of the Fredericks catalog. It’s little more than lingerie with a mesh skirt overlay. Morrison rarely gets it right and needs a new stylist. Something nice – her hair and makeup are well done.

Here’s another see through dress, although this certainly isn’t the last of them – Emmy Rossum in polkadot Zuhair Murad. This long fishtail gown is too fancy and fussy, and it looks bizarre with the mesh paneling. Plus her matronly updo is dragging this look down. She looks hot despite all that though, and I really like her makeup.

Jenny McCarthy wore her best black cotton tank top with a blue cut-out glitter skirt paired with platform ankle boots. Trash to the E. This is actually a whole “look” by Tom Ford. Maybe he’s letting his interns design now that he has a baby at home.

Finally Chloe Moretz, 16, was cute in a Fendi minidress. This dress reminds me of some of Emma Watson’s looks and I really like the bold mix of patterns. It would have worked better with some neutral shoes, those clunky checkerboard shoes are overkill.

Emma Watson in Maxime Simoens at the MTV Movie Awards: adorable, bizarre?

Emma Watson was the recipient of the “Trailblazer” award at the MTV Movie Awards last night, presented by a lovely Eddie Redmayne rocking the hell out of a leather jacket. His whole outfit was like catnip to me, but I digress. Emma was super cute in a short Maxine Simoens white and black contemporary gown with some cool architectural details along the neckline. When I saw this dress on camera last night I thought it was by Brood, as I covered it when Emma wore a similar dress by that designer last year. Emma loves contemporary, edgy kind of sci-fi little dresses and this is better than anything we’ve seen her in to date, in my opinion. It’s not as busy as her previous dresses but it still has plenty of eyecatching details.

Emma was so pretty last night and I especially liked her simple hair and understated makeup. Her shoes are by Proenza Schouler and they’re hot in my opinion. They could have overwhelmed the dress but instead they match the look without looking too “matchy”.

In terms of Emma’s speech, she was visibly moved that she had won an award for her career (at 22!) and I found myself rooting for her. She opened up a little bit, saying that she was more like Hermione than we might have known, admitting “I was completely the eager beaver in school. I was the girl in the front of the class who was the first person to put her hand up, and it’s often not cool… I’ve often gotten teased mercilessly, but I’ve found that ultimately if you truly pour your heart into what you believe in, even if it makes you vulnerable, amazing things can and will happen. I’m so honored to be receiving this and I promise to keep making the best work I can for all of you.” Here’s Emma’s speech. Oh and this clip doesn’t have Jonah Hill’s awesome intro for Emma, in which he claimed that they were going to costar in 50 Shades together and that his safeword was “tangerine.” Hilarious.

Also there we have Chloe Moretz in Louis Vuitton, surprisingly, although I guess I should have known since this denim dress looks like one of their fug patchwork purses. I was trying to figure out when Chloe, 16, went dark with her hair. She’s had dark hair for the past few months, and I think it’s so pretty. It’s very flattering and suits her coloring. I like her styling here.

Kylie Minogue looked bizarre in an alternating silver and blue stripe and see-through mess Paco Rabanne dress. It looks like Kylie gained a little much-needed weight, which suits her well, but that might just be the effect of this ugly dress. You can do better Kylie!

Melissa McCarthy is probably in David Meister here, he’s her go-to designer, (although I can’t confirm that) and I like that she went with a pantsuit instead of a dress. Those stacked necklaces are cool and standout well with the simple black outfit she’s wearing. I don’t like her shoes, though, they look a little “panto”. Her hair is so pretty. She surely has extensions, but they look natural.

And finally Alexis Knapp was there. She’s Ryan Phillippe’s random baby mama and she dated Seth MacFarlane for a hot minute. I didn’t know she was in Pitch Perfect, I have to see that! Kaiser is getting me excited for it. She wore this horrible pepto-pink dress with pagoda sleeves (I looked it up) and some kind of white Rorschach pattern across the front. Maybe with some different styling or shoes she could have made this dress work somewhat, but as it is it’s too childish looking. Just because people gush over a hairdo on Pinterest doesn’t mean you should wear it on the red carpet. Not cute.

Chloe Moretz: School ‘is really important to me. I’m not just an actress’

Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz covers the March issue of Teen Vogue to promote this summer’s Kick-Ass 2 and this fall’s Carrie remake, which is probably one of those make-or-break roles in one of those WTF sort of horror remakes that are all too popular these days. I suspect that the movie itself won’t fare too well (neither did Chloe’s other inexplicable horror remake of Let the Right One In), but it won’t be Chloe’s fault at all because she’ll deliver a fine performance. Even though she’s only 15 years old, I feel that she’ll somehow be one of the rare actresses that manages an adult transition without much trouble. After all, she already comes off as rather mature onscreen and is often cast as the wiser-than-her-years sister or female sidekick (500 Days of Summer, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Kick-Ass). The Teen Vogue cover accurately reflects the editorial spread within the magazine; the look is young, fresh, and playful. Here are some interview excerpts:

Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz

On her expletive-filled role in Kick-Ass: “I look back at that movie,” she laughs, “And I think, Wow, I see why it’s so inappropriate. You know, I could be in high school right now, like any other normal fifteen-year-old girl. I’m proud to say that I made a different life for myself. I’m a businesswoman.”

: “Carrie is the epitome of a girl who’s been broken down by others. When I was auditioning for Carrie, I was told, ‘Well, look, you’re too young, you’re too pretty, you’re too accomplished.’” After reading the book three times and doing extensive research on the part, she was determined to prove them wrong. “I love showing people I can do something that they might think I will never be able to do. Playing someone who’s happy-go-lucky and has a good life and a nice family–it’s boring for me. Because that’s my life. I have a good family. My mom loves me. I like being challenged, playing characters that are a little messed up.”

Her street style: “Cashmere sweaters, jeans, nothing crazy. I want to be comfortable. I’m not running around in Givenchy or Louis Vuitton. My mom doesn’t let me buy expensive brands.”

The red carpet is different: “Oh, McQueen. I love McQueen so much. “Jonathan Saunders, Miu Miu, Prada, and definitely Kenzo—I love what they’re doing lately.”

School is a big deal: “I travel with a suitcase of books. It weighs a million pounds! It’s really important to me. I want to be able to say, ‘I’m not just an actress.’ I need to be able to say, ‘I can quit this business and go live my own life and be whoever I want to be.’ Going to college will help prevent me from being restrained or put into a box. I’ve been told a hundred times that I would fail. I’ve learned not to listen too much to others. My philosophy is if something makes you happy, do it. If it doesn’t make you happy, stop. You have to be spontaneous. Don’t play the best friend in the film version of your life. Be the leading lady.”

[From Teen Vogue]

She does sound relatively mature for a 15-year-old, right? A lot of people did take great offense at Chloe swearing like crazy and enacting violent vengeance in Kick-Ass, but she said her mother never lets her curse at home, and their family even “refers to the movie as ‘Kick-Butt” at home. The movie was a comic-book fantasy, of course, and Chloe seems to have recovered well and has even gone back in for the sequel.

This shoot really is quite lovely. It’s age appropriate and flattering, and Chloe seems like a natural in front of the camera. Hopefully, the likes of Terry Richardson will never, ever get their hands on her.

Emma Watson in Peter Pilotto at the People’s Choice Awards: too weird or hot?

At last night’s People’s Choice Awards, Emma Watson took home the “favorite dramatic artist” award, beating out Charlize Theron, Keira Knightley, Meryl Streep, and Rachel McAdams, none of whom came. (Here’s a full list of winners.) Emma wore Peter Pilotto, in a style that she’s rocked successfully in the past. Go here and here to see her wearing very similar dresses on the red carpet. Emma (and/or her stylist) loves short, contemporary dresses with bold prints and architectural designs. This dress is just a step too far, though, with some very ugly cutouts along the bodice, a much too-short skirt in a cacophonous pattern, and matchy-matchy cutout shoes. Plus, her makeup looks amateurish. She often gets it right but not this time.

The lovely Julianne Hough was in a cute Tony Ward couture sequin dress. This dress is a bit cutesy with the bouncy skirt, but I do love the celestial colors and how comfortable Julianne looks. Her hair and makeup are very elegant, but fun. She just looks like she’s having a good time. I also like how her shoes don’t compete with her dress.

Cloe Moretz was somewhat shocking in a bright yellow Simone Rochas dress with a floral embroidered pattern. She looks like she took a bath in highlighter! She’s only 15 though, and at that age I also wore a lot of neon colors. (They were in!)

And finally, host Kaley Cuoco was a little too precious in Christian Siriano with matching heels. Maybe with different shoes this would have worked, but it looks a little too “bridesmaid” to me.

This is what Kaley wore to the press room red carpet, and it’s not much better. I do like her hair and makeup though.

Sandra Bullock and Louis dress up as Toy Story characters for Halloween

Here’s some more of our ongoing Halloween coverage, which I’ve so excited about since I freaking love Halloween. This year my kid went as Boba Fett from Star Wars and I did some skeleton face makeup. (I followed this tutorial on YouTube, which was awesome and made an excellent skeleton face.) Admittedly, I do skeleton face makeup just about every Halloween because it’s an easy way to get a scary look without having to buy new makeup and costumes. I wish more people would go for scary and/or unattractive Halloween looks instead of sexy costumes where they’re basically themselves as some character in a tiny outfit. (Not that I haven’t done that, but catwoman was Michelle Pfeiffer the last time I did it.)

So first we have Sandra Bullock as cowgirl Jesse from Toy Story and little Louis as Buzz Lightyear. I love Sandra’s hair, it’s so authentic! These two are adorable and it’s great to see how big Louis is getting. This has me all happy wondering if Louis got to meet Sandra’s Incredibly Loud costar, Tom Hanks, and if he realized that Tom was Woody. What a thrill that must be for a kid to meet the voice of one of the characters in their favorite movies. Toy Story is a huge hit around my house and it’s one of the few kids franchises that I’ve seen multiple times and still enjoy. Pixar can really bring it.

Courteney Cox and her eight year-old daughter, Coco, were out in Brentwood for lunch yesterday. Little Coco wore this cute purple and blue tutu paired with a striped shirt and some tights she’s written on. I’m not sure if this is her Halloween outfit, or just a fun lead-up to her Halloween costume, which may have been epic and creative according to Courteney. She told People Magazine that Coco takes after her dad, David, and that she designed her own costume as a “half angel-half devil,” but added that Coco had another costume worked out first. “At one she wanted to be a baby-old man-detective and she had this whole outfit planned out. She had a bib, she had a mustache, glasses, a pacifier, and I was like, ‘That’s very David, isn’t it?” That’s cute! I wish we had a pic of Coco in her costume.

Chloe Moretz, 15, was a kind of goth chick in a tattered dress sporting long wavy hair and dark eyemakeup. (Her outfit might be a vampire, but I don’t know who she’s supposed to be specifically.) I love this. It’s kind of pretty and feminine without showing too much skin. She looks like she’s having a lot of fun too. Chloe was headed to Jonathan Ross’ Halloween party in London.

Alyson Hannigan, Alexis Denisof and their adorable kids, Satyana, three and a half, and Keeva, five months, were a family of colorful glittering seahorses. Look at their matching shoes! This is so whimsical and cute! Dad Alexis is even carrying the baby, just like a male seahorse. Alyson is known for her wonderful Halloween costumes, and I swear this family brings it every year.

Chloe Moretz, 15, cast in title role of the remake of the Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’

These are some photos of Chloe Moretz at the Metropolitan Opera two nights ago. Chloe wore Yves Saint Laurent, like most women at the event (which was cosponsored by YSL). This young woman is only 15 years old… and that’s why I rarely cover her. Chloe kind of makes me uncomfortable, and the fact that I’m uncomfortable about a 15-year-old girl makes me even more uncomfortable. It’s a discomfort spiral. I think she’s very talented, and she’s going to be working for a long, long time. She’s also a very pretty girl, and she’ll be a beautiful woman. I just worry that she’s rushing everything. I remember what it was like to be 15, thinking that you had the world all figured out. If you add to that lots of attention from Hollywood, everyone kissing your ass, and invitations from all of the best parties ever… it’s a heady mix. I worry about Chloe.

But I guess I shouldn’t worry. Chloe is going to be fine, right? She’s 15 years old, working consistently in really cool stuff, like 30 Rock and Dark Shadows, and now Chloe might have just gotten a lead role in a film that could make-or-break her career:

Chloe Moretz may only be 15 years old, but she’s got quite an impressive acting resume!

She’ll soon add another title to the list, as Deadline reports she’s been offered the titular role in the latest adaptation of Carrie. “I’ve never been so happy in my life!” Moretz tweeted Tuesday. “Thank you Kim Peirce and thank you MGM for the chance of a lifetime I will never forget!”

Moretz and her older brother Trevor, who serves as her acting coach, “are flipping out,” she added. Prior to being cast, Dakota Fanning, 18, and Lily Collins, 23, were reportedly being considered for the role.

Peirce’s film is not considered a remake of the 1976 Brian De Palma classic starring Sissy Spacek, but a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel. His 1974 tale is about a high school student who uses her telekinetic powers to seek revenge on cruel classmates and her Christian fundamentalist mother.

Moretz, who next appears alongside Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in Dark Shadows, has been a critical darling since her role in 2005′s The Amityville Horror. Her other TV and film roles include Kick-Ass, (500) Days Of Summer, Let Me In, 30 Rock and Hugo.

[From Us Weekly]

Ooooh…. I don’t know about this. First of all, I think Carrie is one of Stephen King’s best novels. How is it that King can write such well-developed female characters within the confines of the horror genre? A discussion for another time. So… a great book, which was already adapted brilliantly by Brian De Palma, with Sissy Spacek in a career-defining turn as Carrie the telekinetic. Not only does a remake feel completely unnecessary, it feels like Hollywood is setting Chloe Moretz up to fail. She could completely own the role, but people are still going to say “Well, Sissy Spacek, etc.”

Also: Chloe Moretz is on Twitter? Ugh.

Costume Designers awards featuring Rooney Mara, Kate Beckinsale: who brought it?

Last night the stars came out for the Costume Designers Guild Awards. Winners included “Downton Abbey,” “Glee,” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Here’s a link to the complete list of winners and nominees by category. I’d love to talk about the incredible costumes on “Downton Abbey” for a moment. Kaiser and I are both big fans, and we were chatting about how some patterns and dresses were re-used during the recent season. Like I noticed that Lady Mary was win a certain modern green pattern dress that Livinia was seen wearing in future episodes. Kaiser clued me in to the fact that they were probably recycling outfits to underscore how hard it was to get material and outfits during the war. It was clever, and was a small detail in an intricate show filled with costumes and set designs that transport you to another time and place. The win for “Downton Abbey’s” costumers was well deserved and I’m just disappointed that none of the actresses from that fabulous show came out for this event. Now let’s get to the fashion!

First off we have Rooney Mara in deep purple J. Mendel. I feel like she has one look, contemporary, and she works it on every red carpet. It’s striking, though, and she pulls it off. Those shoes sort-of look too heavy with that dress, and they feel like the wrong style, but the nude color kind of makes them work. I really like her makeup too, it matches this style dress perfectly.

Kate Beckinsale also does one look, overdone, and it’s getting a little old for me. Still, this woman is absolutely gorgeous. I think we’ve seen this draped bodice style on Kate before – but no, she just usually dresses to the hilt in white or black dresses. This is a Vivienne Westwood gown. I find it a little much with those giant earrings, but that’s Kate.

Also in Vivienne Westwood was Chloe Moretz, who is all of 15. I like this dress on her and find it cute and age-appropriate. Plus she’s got a little pink streak in her hair! That just reminds us that she’s a kid.

Penelope Ann Miller is trying to bring back the 80s in this ridiculous full length gold gown with a sequin cut out on the bodice and pirate sleeves. At least she fixed her gray hair.

My girl Erika Christensen from “Parenthood” was styled beautifully with sideswept perfectly curled hair, red lips and pretty makeup. This red satin dress isn’t flattering on her, though. These type of straight-down dresses rarely are, and I know not to even bother trying them on in the store because they inevitably emphasize my hips. Kaiser mentioned to me that this dress may have worked with better tailoring.

Jane Lynch wore a striking floor length red gown with a sweetheart neckline. We’re always seeing her in navy and black dresses and this color really pops on her. She looks elegant.

Some of you may disagree, but I covet these awesome shoes that Amber Valetta from “Revenge” is wearing. Business in the front, sexy party in the back! How amazing are these open starburst wedges? I could stare at these for hours, preferably on my own feet. Excuse me while I take a little break and fantasize about wearing these shoes.

As for Amber’s tight salmon high-neck dress, I love it. I feel like some different styling would have completed the look, though, and I’d like to see her with her hair down. A quick image search shows that she usually wears it down, so maybe she wanted to switch it up. Simple dress plus killer shoes.

Oh here’s Rooney posing with Trish Summerville, the costume designer for Girl with The Dragon Tattoo.

Kirsten Dunst in black Christian Dior: too fussy and smug or spot on?

I’m really loving Kirsten Dunst lately. She’s impressed me with how well spoken yet down to earth she is in recent interviews, and I think she’s conquered her demons and is ready to conquer Hollywood. I want to hear more news about her landing leading roles. I also love that she became a German citizen and wants to do a German language film, it’s ambitious but seems genuine since her dad is German.

Last night Kirsten announced best supporting actress along with Owen Wilson. You could tell she was a little nervous, but she pushed through it and I found it endearing. I have to say that If I was just looking at these photos without paying much attention to her otherwise, I would find her bitchface off-putting.

Her black Christian Dior gown was just the right mix of fashion-forward yet classic. In some photos the ribbons along the neckline looked fussy, but on screen the dress was lovely. I really liked the sheer hemline and the ruffles and ribbons on the skirt. Her hair and makeup weren’t the best but overall I think she got it right here. Look at that gorgeous Harry Winston tennis bracelet and those amazing earrings. I would love to wear those diamonds just for one night.

There were a lot of black dresses last night. Chloe Moretz wore a black Chanel gown with fluffy sleeves and a diamond shaped jewel detail at the neckline that just wasn’t pretty. Still, she’s a kid at 14 and it’s nice to see her dressing like one. (Kirsten has also worn a fug jeweled Chanel in the past.) Her shoes are very similar to the style that Kirsten wore, but Kirsten had on Jimmy Choo while Chloe’s shoes were Rupert Sanderson.

Fellow young actress Shailene Woodley was up for two awards: Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Descendants with George Clooney, which went to Octavia Spencer, and Best Young Actor/Actress, which went to Thomas Horn for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. I looked at these photos and assumed she was in her teens. Woodley is 20, and this lackluster styling is really doing her a disservice. She’s wearing Calvin Klein and while the dress may look elegant in theory, it falls short for me on the red carpet. She’s so pretty and she needed to do something more with her hair and makeup.

Melissa McCarthy was also up for Best Supporting Actress for her hilarious turn in Bridesmaids. She’s won an Emmy for “Mike and Molly” and I’m hoping she takes home some awards for Bridesmaids too. She was in David Meister and it looks like a lot of the other dresses she’s worn this season. She loves blue and purple jewel tones and sequins. I’m not a fan of her style, which tends towards pageant-wear (credit: Kaiser on that one). I also think her earrings and necklace are too matchy-matchy. Her hair and makeup are really pretty though.

Judy Greer is one of my favorite supporting actresses. She usually plays the goofy best friend role, and in interviews she’s funny, gracious and upbeat. Her dress here is a little underwhelming and those shoes are odd, the design makes her feet look stuffed into them, but I like her styling a lot.

Finally poor Penelope Ann Miller of The Artist is looking like an old lady. She’s only 48, but this hair color ages her 10 to 15 years. Is she just letting it go naturally gray? I’ll be honest, I started going gray in my 20s and I would look like this too if I didn’t faithfully dye my hair every month. I also don’t like her gown, which is too monotone, or her styling at all. This look screams “makeover!”

Chloe Moretz in Dolce & Gabbana at premiere: too mature & too beige?

I’ve been talking about Chloe Moretz more than I’d like as of late. The girl is 14 years old. She’s been everywhere lately, all because she’s in promotional mode for her new film, Hugo. Should I be giving Chloe a pass in general because of her age? Or is she up for discussion because she wants to be up for discussion? I’ve read interviews with Chloe – it’s not that she’s precocious. Hailee Steinfeld is precocious, Kiernan Shipka is precocious. They still act like kids, all giggly and young. But with Chloe, it really is like she’s a 30-something actress, stuck in the body of a 14-year-old.

So these are photos of last night’s premiere of Hugo 3D, the Marty Scorsese film that Chloe appears in. Chloe wore this Dolce & Gabbana dress that I LOATHE. This beigey color is just wrong on her, the bodice looks too tight, the full skirt is princessy, but the fit seems wrong and everything overwhelms her – she’s being overwhelmed by beige tulle. Plus, Chloe is petite. She’s a short girl, and this is not the right dress for short girls. It makes her look squat, and she’s not – she’s just a small, short 14-year-old girl who should be wearing something from the juniors department.

I’m also including photos of Ben Kingsley because I love him and Sasha Baron Cohen because he looks nice and I think it’s interesting that he did this event alone. Where’s Isla?
