Singer Corinne Bailey Rae to release first new album since her husband’s death

50th Annual GRAMMY Awards - GM Arrivals
You may not recognize the name Corinne Bailey Rae, but you probably know her monster hit “Put Your Records On.” The song sold 4 million copies and thrust Rae, a UK-based jazz singer, into the international spotlight. The singer suffered a personal tragedy last year when her husband, musician Jason Rae, died of a drug overdose. Now, Corinne is set to release her second album and says she worked through her grief with music.

Corinne Bailey Rae is set to sail on a new journey in her career with the release of her new album The Sea on Feb. 2, it was announced Thursday.

The singer, 30, whose husband Jason was found dead in March 2008, has spoken of how she has channeled her grief into some of the new songs.

“I hope you guys will like it and be into it,” she says in a video on her Web site. The Leeds-based singer also says she co-produced the new record and promises “some hints” of the new work and behind-the-scenes footage will come to the site.

Rae’s 2006 debut song “Put Your Records On” sold 4 million copies. Prior to the February release of her album, she will perform some new shows in the U.S., as well as a Nov. 23 London concert.

Corinne met her husband when she worked as a coat room attendant at a jazz club in Leeds. They married in 2001, before her career took off. Rae went into hiding after her husband’s death and hasn’t spoken on it since, but it looks like she is back to what she does best. I have been looking forward to this release for a while now. Corinne’s first album was great and there were many songs on it that surpassed her big hit. It’s nice to see her returning to work and doing well.

Corinne Bailey Rae’s husband is dead at 31

31 year-old Jason Rae, a saxophone player and husband of singer Corinne Bailey Rae, was found dead in a London apartment yesterday afternoon. Rae played with the Haggis Horns, an “eight piece live funk band” that has worked with Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson and Nightmares on Wax.

The Daily Mail reports that a 32 year-old man was arrested in conjunction with the death “on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs” but that he was released on bail. An initial autopsy was inconclusive, and the coroner is awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

The late Rae’s wife, Corinne Bailey Rae, 29, was not at the scene at the time. She is best known for the hit song “Put Your Records On” and took home a Grammy this year for album of the year for a collaboration with Herbie Hancock on “River: The Joni Letters.”

That’s a very young age to die and although it looks like it’s drugs-related there’s not enough evidence yet to reach that conclusion.

Details from TMZ and The Daily Mail.
