Cynthia Nixon opens up about her longterm same-sex partner

Sex and The City star Cynthia Nixon has two children from her relationship with a male English professor, which lasted from 1988 to 2003. They have a daughter Samantha, 11, and a son Charles, 5. In September, 2004, the news came out that she had a same sex partner, an education activist named Christine Marinoni, and that the two were raising Nixon’s children together in Brooklyn. At first Nixon understandably wasn’t too open with the press about her relationship, and you can’t blame her based on the sensational way the story was reported.

In a Nightline interview in February, 2006, she talked about her relationship without getting into specifics. She said “I think people have been pretty good… they understand and they’re pretty respectful.” She also said of the media coverage that “It was a little crazy being on the front page of the paper, and I had photographers outside my house for a day or two, but, it wasn’t so bad.”

In June, 2006 Nixon again spoke in general terms about her personal life, saying “My private life is private. But I have nothing to hide. So what I will say is that I am very happy.”

Then in September of 2006 she did discuss her partner and described the way she fell for her in matter-of-fact terms. She said in an interview with New York Magazine that “I never felt like there was an unconscious part of me around that woke up or that came out of the closet; there wasn’t a struggle, there wasn’t an attempt to suppress. I met this woman, I fell in love with her, and I’m a public figure.”

And recently Nixon, 41, talked about her partner glowingly and about how much she loves her. She mentioned how they both work together in their household and called their relationship “fantastic”:

The SATC star told reporters, “I’m in a fantastic relationship,” she continued, “We shop and cook and raise children…We both pitch in.” Much like in SATC, Cynthia and her partner raise her two kids Samantha, 11, and Charles, 6, in Brooklyn. (Note by Celebitchy: Charles is 5 according to Wikipedia.)

“I’m in love with her because she’s her. If she were a man, would I be in love with her? I don’t know.”

[From OK! Magazine]

I like how she describes their relationship. It’s like something that was once sensationalized as some big scandal is really just two people raising children together like many families do. In her NY Magazine interview, Nixon said of the media coverage that “if someone is chasing you, stop running. And then they’ll stop chasing you.”

Nixon handled the press extremely well in that she spoke in general terms that covered the major points while making it clear that she considered her relationship a non-issue. She didn’t get into too many details. And now it’s time to say what she’s wanted to all along, that she loves her partner and that it’s the little things that make their relationship special.

Nixon’s partner is a bigger woman and many people were like “oh, she’s not hot.” I think in her statements she’s making it clear why she loves her, and that it’s much deeper than looks and yet is as average as any relationship.

Nixon next stars in the Sex and The City movie, which opens in the US on May 30, 2008.

Thanks to Wikipedia for some details.

Cynthia Nixon, Christine Marinoni, and Cynthia’s children Charles and Samantha are shown at a fundraiser at Central Park Zoo on 6/12/06, thanks to WENN.

Kim Cattrall gets $6 mil for SATC movie, Davis and Nixon each get $2 mil

Kim Cattrall sure wasn’t kidding when she said that she was just doing the Sex and The City movie for the money. Not only is she being paid the hefty fee of $6 million to do the film - her salary is three times the amount that her fellow supporting actresses Cynthia Nixon and Kirsten Davis are being paid. Davis and Nixon, who were always on board for a film version of the hit HBO series and didn’t hold out for more money and perks like Cattrall did, are receiving just $2 million a piece. That hardly sounds fair, does it?

[Kim Cattrall will] get a whopping $6 million to re-create her character Samantha Jones for the film version of the hit show, while Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York) are walking away with only $2 million each, The Enquirer has learned.

“Kim has had the last laugh on her co-stars,” said a source close to the highly anticipated project.

“For years she was the odd girl-out while Cynthia and Kristin sucked up to Sarah Jessica Parker and snubbed Kim.

“But this time Kim’s calling the shots. She’s letting everyone in the world know she was the cast holdout and she demanded triple was the other girls got.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, November 26, 2007]

According to The Enquirer, Sarah Jessica Parker had plenty of incentive to reward Cattrall for driving a hard bargain. She will make nearly $10 million for playing Carrie Bradshaw and will earn another $5 million for producing the film.

What I fail to see is how Cattrall is technically more valuable to the cast than Nixon and Davis are. If someone has a more central role, like Sarah Jessica Parker, they should get more money for it, but Cattrall certainly isn’t worth three times the amount her costars are. It sounds like they were so desperate to make this already-overdue film that they just dealt with Cattrall and met her demands. Meanwhile the actresses who played fair and just wanted to do their jobs are the ones who got screwed.

This is the woman who put out two how-to sex books and deliberately went without panties (NSFW link) to pull a “Basic Instinct” crossing-legs maneuver while promoting the second last November. Maybe she won’t have to resort to such desperate measures to revive her career now that she has some cash in the bank.

Life is imitating long-gone television for Kim Cattrall. 51 year-old Cattrall has been dating 28 year-old Canadian chef Alan Wyse since 2004.

Cattrall and her co-stars are shown on the Sex and the City set on 11/7/07. Thanks to Splash News.

Sex And The City Movie Filming (spoiler alert)

Sex and the City was – and still is – one of my favourite guilty pleasures on television. Even if by the time it screened in Australia the fashions were very last season. Doing my nails in front of Grey’s Anatomy just isn’t the same. So I’m pretty excited about the movie, and as hard as I tried to resist temptation, I read the spoilers.

Sporting a large baby bump and laden with shopping bags, Kristin Davis’s character and Mr Big, played by Chris Noth, get into a heated argument outside a restaurant. An outraged Charlotte takes to him with her shopping bags.

(Has Big been busted dining with a lady other than Carrie?)

Charlotte’s waters break during the slinging match and — sparing no thought for what a woman’s waters will do to luxury car upholstery — Mr Big ushers Charlotte into his car for the trip to the hospital.

In other plot news, Sarah Jessica Parker’s (SJP) character Carrie goes flat hunting with Mr Big after the pair agree to move in together.

I’m not sure how careful the movie is going to pick up where the series left off – and will it all be tied into a nice little bundle at the end? I sort of liked the ending, as it wasn’t a fairytale, like they were real people who would keep on living.

For those of you who can’t remember the season finale, Carrie and Big were reunited in Paris after she split with sexy Russian Aleksander Petrovsky. Big’s real name was revealed to be John.

Miranda was married to Steve and living in Brooklyn with his mother and their baby.

Charlotte married Harry and they were adopting a baby from China.

And Samantha found true love with Smith Jerrod, after beating breast cancer.

The movie has already begun filming, but Kim Cattrall’s feud with Sarah Jessica Parker may be back on again, after she stormed out of a party to celebrate the start of filming the movie. Hopefully they’ll catch some of their fights on film for the DVD extras.

Thanks to Splash News for the header image of Big and Carrie kissing, which was taken on set.

Kim Cattrall negotiatied “Sex and the City” deal to be just as good as SJPs

sexcity.jpg
Playing hard to get for once worked for Samantha. Kim Cattrall, long-rumored to be the sole holdout on the upcoming “Sex and the City” movie, signed up for the film now confirmed to be in the works only after her demands were met.

She’s now getting equal pay and equal screen time with lead star Sarah Jessica Parker. She’ll also get the same treatment on set:

After repeatedly refusing to sign on the dotted line since the TV series ended in 2004, Cattrall stubbornly held out and won what seemed like her impossible dream when producers finally caved and gave her 1) equal salary, 2) equal billing and 3) the same onscreen time as star Sarah Jessica Parker! Kick-ass Kim even negotiated an “equal perks” rider - insisting on a top-of-the-line dressing trailer identical to Sarah Jessica’s, plus an exclusive dream team of hair and makeup artists!

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, Mike Walker’s column, July 30, 2007]

It has also been reported that Cattrall even worked out a deal with HBO for a new series!

This was a decent show, but when it finally comes out is it going to do well at the box office? According to IMDB it doesn’t start filming until the fall of this year so it will be some time before it finally comes out.

Will any of you guys go see it? I enjoyed the show occassionally, and could relate to it when I was single and lived near NY. To me it got kind of old though, and at this point I don’t really care what happens to these characters. I don’t know if this show has the kind of cult following needed to give it a decent draw in theaters four or five years after it wrapped, but maybe that’s just because it didn’t resonate with me.

Good for Cattrall for getting equal pay and perks with Parker, though. I hope that Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon aren’t too far behind, because without either of them it wouldn’t be the same, either. Woman can probably identify more with their characters’ normalcy than either sexaholic Samantha or shopaholic Carrie.

Cynthia Nixon lobbies for school funding

Cynthia Nixon appeared today at City Hall in NY to lobby for more funds for schools as part of the “Our Kids Can’t Wait” campaign.

Nixon made headlines a year and a half ago when the news came out that she had left her husband for a female partner.

She is currently appearing in a Broadway play called “Rabbit Hole” about a couple “trying to cope with the loss of their son.” It is a tear-jerker that has received rave reviews.
