Ed Norton proposed to his girlfriend of six years

Shauna Robertson
There was a blurb yesterday in the NY Post that had cuckoo Courtney Love’s response to the news that Ed Norton, 41, had proposed to his girlfriend of six years. Apparently Norton proposed on a trip to India three weeks ago and this is the first we’ve heard about it. Norton used to date Courtney back in the 90s when they did The People vs. Larry Flint together. I guess they’re still friends because Norton was investing Courtney’s money for her and she was raging about it or something. Well Courtney wants to remind us that she dated the guy, and she was gracious about his engagement. I’m sure her remarks are translated to non-crackhead speak in order to make them fit to print.

Courtney Love was shocked by Edward Norton’s engagement to his longtime girlfriend, film producer Shauna Robertson. Norton proposed to her in India three weeks ago but news hadn’t reached Love — who dated Norton in the late ’90s after they starred in “The People vs. Larry Flynt.” At the Cinema Society screening of “Meek’s Cutoff,” Love told us, “Wow, it’s about time. He’s 41, they’ve been together for six years. He needs to have babies. I wonder what kind of ring he got her? He bought me a ruby.” Love flattered Norton, saying, “He has great character. He’s very political. I see him being a senator one day.”

[From The NY Post]

It’s too bad for Robertson and Norton that the news of their engagement is being released through a comment by one of his cracked-out exes. He also dated Salma Hayek but I guess she was too busy counting her diamonds to go to an event where someone could ask her about it.

The last we heard of Norton he was getting dumped by Marvel in a would-be reprisal of his role as The Hulk in the upcoming Avengers. They issued a bitchy statement about it suggesting that Norton was difficult to work with, and then they replaced him with Mark Ruffalo.

Norton also co-founded a social networking charity website called Crowdrise last year. He may have been in India with his girlfriend doing charity work. Congratulations to Ed and Sauna! Sorry we had to find out the happy news from Courtney Love.

Mark Ruffalo announced as the new Incredible Hulk after diva Ed Norton got fired

wenn2892857

A few weeks ago, the president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige publicly smacked down Edward Norton. Norton had been in talks to reprise his role as The Incredible Hulk in The Avengers, the film that will be like the greatest hits of several of Marvel’s comic-book action stars. Negotiations between Norton and Marvel broke down, and Kevin Feige released a bitchy public statement about Norton, claiming that they were looking for “an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble… We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.

CB was Team Norton, because she thought Feige’s press release was super-bitchy and unprofessional. But I tend to think Feige probably had enough with Norton’s diva antics, which are legendary (as is the size of his ego). While Norton is unique in that he can back up his diva temperament and egotistic attitude with actual talent, Norton has spent decades being a pill to important people in the industry, and it’s surprising he only got called out on it now.

So, anyway – Marvel just announced their new Hulk. And it’s super-nice guy Mark Ruffalo! … the hell? I would never have pegged Ruffalo for an action guy, or for a comic book guy, but here it is:

Mark Ruffalo is the new Hulk, Marvel Studios announced when unveiling the cast of the 2012 sequel ‘The Avengers’ at Comic Con on Saturday.

The decision follows a dramatic dismissal of the previous Hulk, Edward Norton. Two weeks ago Marvel released a harsh statement announcing that Norton, who played Bruce Banner and his green alter-ego in the 2008 movie, would not be returning. The statement insisted the decision was not about money and suggested Norton was not a team player.

Norton’s rep called the statement “purposefully misleading” and described the decision as a financial one.

Eric Bana first played the Hulk in 2003.

Ruffalo joins an ensemble cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sam Jackson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.

“It’s like Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet, a new actor gets a crack at it every year,” Ruffalo told the LA Times. “But really it’s all heady stuff. It’s exciting to be here. It’s great to be a part of all this.”

[From Huffington Post]

I think it’s an interesting, intriguing choice, for both Marvel and Ruffalo. Ruffalo has credibility as Mr. Indie Film, and has a CV full of delicate, moving, intense, beautiful performances – much like Tobey McGuire before Spiderman. This could be very interesting, or it could fail miserably. One thing makes me think it won’t fail though – Mark is a dedicated actor and a professional, and if he’s told he should train hard and be big and buff, he’ll follow through.

Ed Norton dropped from Marvel’s ‘Avengers,’ very bitchy press release issued

Celebs attend The Kids Are Alright screening at the Sunshine Theater in NYC, NY on June 30, 2010. The film staring Julianne Moore and Annette Bening showcases the chaos ignited when the children of a middle aged lesbian couple seek out their biological father, played by Mark Ruffalo. Fame Pictures, Inc
Ed Norton was in talks to reprise his role as The Hulk in the upcoming Marvel film The Avengers, written & directed by Joss Whedon and starring Chris Evans (Captain America) Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). It was thought that Norton would play Bruce Banner as he did in 2008′s commercially successful The Incredible Hulk. Talks fell through however, and instead of issuing a vague press release wishing Norton well, the President of Marvel Studios made it clear that it was Norton’s bad attitude, not his salary requirements, that made it impossible to grant him the role. This statement is really bitchy and speaks to some serious problems with Norton:

“Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members,” said Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige in a statement. “The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H., Chris E., Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

[From E! Online]

In response, Norton’s rep called Feige’s statement inaccurate and defamatory and said that it was salary, not any personal issues, that led to a standstill in negotiations:

“This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light. Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige’s statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel’s fans.

Brian Swardstrom
WME”

[From HitFix.com via WeSmirch]

I am so team Norton on this one. I know we’ve heard stories about how Norton is difficult to work with and egocentric, but even if it went down as Feige claims he shouldn’t have mentioned it publicly. It’s just unprofessional as Norton’s rep states.

I think the guy is hugely talented and hope that Marvel’s president issues an apology for talking so much smack. Again, whether it’s true or not it’s not something you say in a public statement.

In related Ed Norton news, he recently co-founded a social networking site to encourage people to get involved with charity.

Ed Norton starts new social networking charity site

Ed Norton has co-founded a new social networking charity site, Crowdrise.com, that allows members to recruit friends to donate their money and time to worthy causes. It’s an easy to use and compelling site with a great purpose. I found myself fascinated while browsing the causes, which include Gulf Coast Oil Spill cleanup and raising money to buy a truck for Maasai villagers. Norton started the project for the website about nine months ago, explaining he wanted to create an easy tool for people to fundraise. Celebrities with memberships include Will Ferrell and Seth Rogan. Will Ferrell is helping cancer survivors afford college, and is even giving away novelty sun tan lotion featuring photos of himself “nude” for every $17 donation. Here’s more from USA Today:

Crowdrise.com is not your typical charity site.
Its slogan is “If you don’t give back, no one will like you.” Dollars raised earn donors such titles as Doctor, Tsar, Sir and Dame.

And donating $17 toward scholarships for cancer survivors earns you a bottle of Will Ferrell’s “Sexy Hot Tan” sunscreen, emblazoned with the likeness of his Speedo-clad body.

Created by actor and activist Edward Norton, producer Shauna Robertson (Superbad, Knocked Up) and Robert and Jeffrey Wolfe (founders of the quirky online retailer Moosejaw), Crowdrise is harnessing the appeal of social networking to make giving go viral.

It’s “about getting people who are not sure their little bit makes a difference to feel persuaded that they can make a difference,” Norton says, and this “micro-giving” is the backbone of Crowdrise. The charity, which has been operating unpublicized since February, officially launched in May.

Users build a profile (called a “Charitable Life”), create project pages linked to their favorite registered non-profit organizations, encourage their social networks to donate and get other users to join them and raise money of their own, amplifying small amounts into bigger checks that Crowdrise cuts to the charities each month.

The site also gives those with little money to donate the chance to get others to sponsor their volunteer work — much like marathon runners get family and friends to back them, Norton says.

“One of the things we’re suggesting is that people should totally think of the ways that volunteering can be productive,” Norton says. “You say to your friends and family: ‘I’m giving my time and my skills, and I want to raise this much for this organization. Will you sponsor my volunteering?’ ”

Meanwhile, non-profit groups can create their own pages, gain followers and then mobilize them to quickly make fundraising goals for specific projects.

“The way the site flows, it can go person, project, charity,” says Robert Wolfe. “Or it can also go the opposite way: charity, project, person.”

Wolfe and his “shorter, smarter” brother Jeffrey, began working on the concept for Crowdrise after being inspired by President Obama’s fundraising campaign. They took their ideas for a test run during the New York City Marathon in November, helping Norton and his team of runners build a website that raised $1.2 million for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.

After the marathon, the Wolfe brothers, Norton and Robertson joined forces to create Crowdrise, which, instead of focusing on a single charity, embraces hundreds of them.

[From USA Today]

I’ve heard that Ed Norton was involved in charity, and I remember him testifying in front of congress a couple of years ago about the conservation charity his grandfather founded, Enterprise Community Partners. I never knew the extent of Norton’s commitment until I checked out his page on Crowdrise. This gives him a pass for dating Courtney Love and generally being difficult to work with.

It’s a great concept and a very well executed site and it will surely attract more celebrities and members as awareness grows. You can learn more and help do your part at Crowdrise.com.

Courtney Love says daughter Frances Bean was the abusive one

wenn8436267

The NYDN’s Rush & Malloy got the strangest interview with Courtney Love over the weekend. It’s strange, first of all, because she sounds so coherent. Secondly, it’s weird because she’s talking about how her daughter, Frances “The Bean” abused her (rather then the other way around) and how Courtney has reconciled friendship-wise with Edward Norton. Oh, and the third weird thing: Courtney might be dating Uma Thurman’s ex, hotelier Andre Balazs…? What the hell? The stuff about Frances-on-Courtney violence is a sad story, but the stuff about Ed Norton is funny/interesting. Something about how Courtney’s cracked out delusions made her think that Norton had lost $300,000 of Courtney’s money when really he tripled her investment. How could Courtney not remember that?

Courtney Love may finally be on the cusp of happiness. With her first album in 10 years already looking like a hit, the Hole singer is closer to a reunion with daughter Frances, has made peace with old beau Edward Norton and may have a new beau lined up.

Let’s get to that last part first. The Love missile has been spending an awful lot of time lately with Andre Balazs, according to spies. The dashing hotelier, ex-husband of modeling czarina Katie Ford and ex-boyfriend of Uma Thurman, was seen with Love last week at the Mercer and the Minetta Tavern.

Love insists Balazs is just “an old friend and my sometime landlord.” Our spies say the friends looked like they should get a hotel room, which Balazs has plenty of.

Meanwhile, Love has been making nice with Norton. A few weeks ago, she went on Twitter to blame him for her allegedly losing $300,000 in a fund he told her to invest in. But Love has now tweeted that she was “wrong” and that he actually tripled her money.

“I feel very bad,” Love tells us. “I have the greatest respect for Edward. He could be the President of the United States. I could be his drug czar – ha, ha.”

Love says Norton also has been a “force of good” in serving as an informal communicator and mediator between her and 17-year-old Frances, whom a restraining order bars Love from speaking to. (A friend of Norton’s insists that his role in the drama has been minimal.)

Mother and daughter fell out last October after a donnybrook at their Tribeca apartment.

“I was talking on the phone,” recalls Love. “Frances came out of my room. She was hysterical. First she was crying at my legs, saying, ‘Why was I born?’ Then she bites and scratches and pulls on my hair. She punched me.”

A source who says she witnessed the confrontation corroborates that Love “never hit Frances. Not one time. All the punches were coming from Frances.”

Love says, “I grabbed her with both arms. That left a bruise and she took a picture of her bruise.”

By December, a judge had taken Frances away from Love and placed her in the care of the mother and sister of her father, rock god Kurt Cobain, who took his own life in 1994.
Love finds it “creepy” that Frances should be represented by Geraldine Wyle, who is also the attorney for Britney Spears’ father, Jamie, in Brit’s guardianship case. Love suspects Jamie convinced Wyle to retaliate against Love after Love claimed that a female member of the Spears family had told her Jamie had molested her. Wyle and a rep for Jamie both declined to comment.

“Geraldine told Frances all this pie-in-the-sky b.s. – that she’d get all this money,” charges Love, who at the same time understands her daughter’s confusion. “Look who her parents are! We were a little lax.”

Love has heard that, after two months away from Mom, Frances has told California child services “she wants to come home.” She tearfully adds, “I should have never gotten mad at her. I love her so much.”

Love believes “we’ll be back together” no later than August, when Frances turns 18 and becomes a legal adult.

A hearing in the case is scheduled for April 8. On April 27, Mercury releases Hole’s record “Nobody’s Daughter.” The first single, “Skinny Little Bitch,” was the most-added song on rock radio last week.

Love shrugs off ex-flame Billy Corgan’s threat to make trouble if she tries to release two songs they collaborated on: “Billy is talking out his a-. His people already gave permission.”

And word is director Bennett Miller is considering the “People vs Larry Flynt” actress for a part in “Moneyball,” co-starring Brad Pitt.

“Who gets a second shot at 45?” asks Love. “I’m a lucky bitch.”

[From Rush & Malloy]

Yes, Courtney is a “lucky bitch” much in the same way Lindsay Lohan is a “lucky bitch”. They’re both lucky to be standing relatively upright after consuming a massive amount of drugs. As far as the claims that Frances abused Courtney… what do you think? I don’t really know who to believe or how I really think this sh-t went down. My gut tells me that Courtney isn’t the kind of person to smack around her daughter. But when I ask myself if I think Courtney is capable of violence, my answer is a definite “yes”. On the other side, I do think Frances is a screwed up kid, and she probably blames her mother (correctly) for a lot of her problems. I really have no idea.

Courtney Love talks trash about Edward Norton & Britney Spears

36019pcn_courtney01

You know what just occurred to me? We don’t show enough love to Courtney Love’s insane rants. She’s even more crazy and cracked out than Lindsay Lohan, and she will literally say and write anything. Well, apparently Courtney left Twitter a while back, but she’s still posting on her Facebook page.

First up, Courtney goes off on Edward Norton, of all people. You see, Courtney and Edward used to be friends, back when they worked together in The People versus Larry Flint. Edward also became friends with some family members of Courtney’s late husband, Kurt Cobain. Now… Movieline suggests that Courtney is claiming Edward Norton mishandled the finances of Kim Cobain (Kurt’s sister).

IF something happens to me, NO my will is NOT at Greenberg Glusker, that will is FORGERY…i created a new one per lISA FERGUSONs attorney who cannot be FOUND but that needs altering as it has Edward in it and Norton doesn’t have a CLUE how evil his own BM is he wont f-ck a future Senator/Film Actor but hell purposfully refinance Kim Cobains Property i bought her cash outright, for the 12th time using a phony address due to some f-ck up on some Bogus “ART FORM OF THE CH 13” R TODD used, leavng KIM COBAINS PROPERTY REPOS…SESED< “you have an hour to get your things” wtf did Kim Cobain do to YOU… so its best to never tell let alone kiss and trell i m shcoked at myself i never kiss and tell unless im really mad at an ex for like LOSING 300,000$ of my kid hes supposed to be paternal abouts money, oh yeah Norton just LOST 300k

[From Courtney’s Facebook courtesy of Movieline]

Next up – Britney Spears. Courtney claims Britney’s father molested her and now enslaves her. But then Courtney brings it back around to herself, of course. She says she relates to Britney in that way, because Britney didn’t “pull that card” (the molestation card, I imagine). This is all my interpretation, honestly. This could be her grocery list, for all I know:

britneys dad molested her , imagine the father that molested you owning you for slavery while your forced to sing songs picked for thier sexual content every night, insane right? i have it on First had authority, and fight as hard as she is and does she still didnt pull that card, its a pride thing i can relate to, However they want to play dirty, lets go, Im SO not affraid of the little trolls who hit this when i was f-cked up who are called lawyers. lets GO.

[From Courtney’s Facebook courtesy of Movieline]

Just reading a few lines of Courtney’s rants makes me feel like I’ve spent the whole day strung out on something hard, and I’m coming down on wine in a box. Granted, Courtney is probably downing box wine too – it’s her chaser after shooting heroin into her lady parts. Gah! What else is there to say? Do I have to defend Britney from this stuff? I don’t think Britney’s dad molested her. I think he uses her for money, but I don’t think he was ever physically abusive or anything. There. Courtney got me to defend Britney. Is that what she wanted?

HBO buys rights to Obama election history documentary

HBO will be airing a behind the scenes documentary of the campaign and election of President Elect Barack Obama. The documentary is being produced by actor Edward Norton’s Class 5 Films. Norton’s production company talked to the Obama campaign back in 2006 about documenting our new President’s historical journey. Two directors, Amy Rice and Alicia Sams, had backstage access, and filmed history as it was being made.

HBO has closed a seven-figure deal for U.S. rights to an untitled Barack Obama documentary produced by actor Edward Norton.

“Senator Obama’s history-making race for the White House has given our film a perfect framework to explore the pulse of the country at this vital moment in our history,” said Norton, who produced the project with Stuart Blumberg and Bill Migliore.

[From Reuters]

Rice and Sams were inspired by Obama’s 2004 DNC speech and wanted to film a documentary about the Senator. Obama had not yet announced his intention to run for President, but he was, even as a an Illinois Senator, a fascinating subject to follow and film. When history unfolded, the project became a huge opportunity for everyone involved.

HBO had been negotiating the rights to the documentary for months and finally came to a seven figure deal with Class 5 Films. The as of yet untitled documentary will air in 2009. The theater rights are still available for negotiation.

Premiere of ‘Pride and Glory’ featuring Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell, 32, and Ed Norton, 39, star in Pride and Glory as two brothers and cops who work to solve a multiple cop killing. Jon Voight plays their father, who also works on the force. The case ends up tearing their family apart.

Farrell recently said in a BBC interview that he made his infamous sex tape in 2003 because of the thrill of taping it and that it wasn’t about watching it again later. He also explained that “I think I was high” when it was made. Farrell said he would do it again, but that he would just take the tape with him next time. He admitted that he was offered a lot of money for the tape, but said “God forbid” his mother should watch it and say “oh you remind me of your father at certain angles.”

Farrell was rumored to be dating his co-star, the lovely Lake Bell, 29, back when the two were working on the film. He has since moved on to English novelist Emma Forrest.

Pride and Glory is out in the US next Friday, October 24. Here’s the trailer:

Incredible Hulk premiere with Liv Tyler and Ed Norton

Liv Tyler and Ed Norton are the stars of the new Incredible Hulk movie, the latest Marvel Comic film adaptation. While an Incredible Hulk film came out just five years ago, directed by Ang Lee in 2005, it received mixed reviews although it was a box office hit. Critics are raving about the new action-packed Incredible Hulk film, and say it’s definitely entertaining and worth your money.

Norton plays scientist Bruce Banner who desperately seeks a cure for the affliction that turns him into a bulky green smashing creature whenever he gets angry. Liv Tyler is his love interest and William Hurt plays her father, General Thunderbolt Ross, who is also out to get Banner. Tim Routh is his nemesis, “The Abomination.”

In an interview with ET on the red carpet, Tyler described herself as a geek and says she has to work not to slouch. She said she doesn’t have a full length mirror at the apartment where she’s staying and couldn’t properly practice her red carpet pose. Both Tyler and Ed Norton said they were supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama when asked about it and expressed enthusiasm for his nomination. Marvel Comics head Stan Lee said there’s a Captain America movie coming up but that he’s not sure who will play the lead, which is rumored to be Matthew McConaughey.

I’m not too fond of Tyler’s one-shoulder short silk shift dress with the arm ruffle – it looks like something Gwyneth Paltrow would wear, especially with those shoes – but it’s Liv Tyler and she’s gorgeous and manages to pull off the look.

Here’s the trailer for The Incredible Hulk, which is out in the US on June 13.

Shown in order are Liv Tyler, Ed Norton, Julie Benz (you may know her as the girlfriend on “Dexter”), Jon Favreau, William Hurt, Tim Routh and family, and Natassia Malthe. Thanks to PRPhotos for these pictures.

Hollywood goes to Washington: Sheryl Crow, Michael Douglas & more

Several celebrities have visited Capital Hill in the past two weeks to testify and represent causes. In many cases the celebrities went through tragedy and adversity and became committed and knowledgeable about issues that personally affected them. In other cases they became involved with specific causes they feel passionate about. Either way, they’re bringing attention to important issues and making a difference. I’d rather see a celebrity testifying in front of a committee than shopping, eating out, or worse getting a DUI, but unfortunately the latter get a lot more attention.

5/21/08: Breast cancer survivor Sheryl Crow testifies in front of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s health subcommittee to support a bill funding breast cancer research. Crow emphasized that she has no family history of breast cancer, and said “I want to know what causes this disease. We need to put more resources into figuring out what the environment has to do with breast cancer.” [Paraphrased from Houston Chronicle. You can view Crow's testimony as a Real Media file thanks to C-Span.org]

5/21/08: Michael Douglas meets with Indiana Senator Richard Lugar at The Capitol to urge him to prevent the spread and use of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons as a director of the Ploughshares Fund organization [Description verbatim from WENN]

5/20/08: United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) goodwill ambassador Geri Halliwell and Care ambassador Christy Turlington hold a rally and press conference with congresswomen and fistula survivors. They urged support of a new bill promoting maternal health throughout the world. [Details paraphrased from Baltimore Sun]

5/14/08: Ed Norton testifies in front of the The House Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming. He is a trustee of Enterprise Community Partners, which was founded by his grandfather and builds affordable homes using green building practices for low income families. He said “The legacy of my generation is going to hinge on how we respond to these revelations that we’re not living sustainably, and that we’re altering the environment.” [Quote and details paraphrased from Peopletreefilms. Video is available on Globalwarming.house.gov - scroll to the last video in the list]

5/14/08: Dennis Quaid testifies in front of the House Reform and Government Oversight Committee urging Congress not to support a measure by the drug companies that would make them immune from lawsuits. He is suing company Baxter Healthcare Corp after a known second preventable mixup in which his newborn twins almost died after being given 1,000 times the dosage of Heparin, a blood thinner. Batches of Heparin have since been recalled for an unrelated incident in which the drug became tainted at a manufacturing plant in China, resulting in 19 known deaths. Dennis Quaid’s twins are healthy at five and a half months old, and are not thought to suffer lasting effects from the near-fatal overdose. [Details paraphrased from MSNBC. Quaid's testimony is available on House.gov as a PDF file and the video is available as a Real Media file from C-span.org]
