Miranda Kerr in Giulietta at the Vogue Fashion Fund Awards: tacky or cute?

Here are some photos from the Ninth Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards in NYC last night. They actually got a good group of people out – lots of models (which I don’t care about for the most part) and some actual movie stars. This is pretty much a pure fashion post, so let’s get to it! Miranda is wearing this Giulietta dress which… sucks. I cannot find anything redeeming about this whatsoever. It looks cheap. The color is wrong. The design is horrible. That fake bustier-thing is built into the dress. Or should I say “onto the dress”? It’s horrible. She’s beautiful, but the dress is made of failure.

Dakota Fanning in Jason Wu. Well, her makeup isn’t as noticeably awful as it was at the BD2 premiere. I can’t say I’m a fan of this brunette shade, and she’s still dressing like she’s a blonde.

Alexa Chung in Thankoon. She looks terrible. I don’t get the fascination with grown women wearing those high school-girl collars.

Liv Tyler in unknown… I love the combo of blue and black always and forever, but this ensemble isn’t working for me. The coat needed to be with a more structured dress and this dress is just… not my taste.

Christina Ricci in a Richard Chai Love Spring / Summer 2013. Yeah. I don’t get it. She looks healthy, but I loathe cut-out dresses. Did anyone see her on The Good Wife? Was she always such a terrible actress?

Ashley Greene in Wes Gordon. She looks really good (for her)!

Emma Stone wore Burberry! I LOVE THAT COAT. MUST HAVE COAT.

Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield use paparazzi photo op to promote charities

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield get pap’d often enough – somewhere in between Kim Kardashian (on a seemingly daily basis) and Michael Fassbender (very rare to see candid photos of him). I’m estimating… Emma and Andrew probably get spotted by paparazzi maybe twice a month, if that? Something along those lines. I know from reading Emma’s interviews that she sometimes feels hounded by the paparazzi, like they’re ever-present and insufferable, but I tend to like the way Emma and Andrew have handled it thus far – they don’t seem to be posing or doing strategic photo-ops, but they aren’t going out of their way to avoid being photographed together either. It really does seem like they’re just living their lives while in a relationship, all while being pretty famous (her more than him, for whatever reason).

Anyway, Emma and Andrew were pap’d on Saturday in New York. New York is their home base, and I’d be willing to bet they share an apartment. They were out to lunch, and realizing that the paparazzi were waiting for them outside, they decided to use this week’s coupley photo op to good use. They made signs and held them out to the photographers. Emma’s sign read: “We just found out that there are paparazzi outside the restaurant we were eating in, So why not take this…” and Andrew’s sign completed the thought: “Opportunity to bring attention to organizations that need and deserve it? www.wwo.org and www.gildasclub.org, Have A Great Day!” They’re supporting Worldwide Orphans Foundation and Gilda’s Club. I don’t know… I’m erring on the side of thinking this is smart, and a completely legitimate way to handle being photographed. They’re making lemonade out paparazzi lemons. Good for them.

Emma Stone covers Interview Mag, looks like an alien: awful or interesting?

I’m sorry to those of you have love the 1980s and the 80s revival in fashion and styling and editorials, but I LOATHE this Emma Stone pictorial for Interview Mag. It’s not a question of whether Emma Stone can pull it off – it’s a question of whether she should. The photos are grainy and unattractive, not “arty”. They made a beautiful young woman look like an alien. Try this kind of pictorial with Tilda Swinton, for sure. But don’t try to make Emma Stone look like Tilda. Anyway… Emma covers the September issue of Interview Mag, and these are some of the photos from the awful pictorial. Interview hasn’t released the full pictorial or interview yet, but we do have some excerpts:

Emma on breakups: “I was crawling on the floor. I remember throwing up. I remember being on the floor . . . I have never felt anything quite like that. It was so visceral. It’s like someone has killed you and you have to live through it and watch it happen . . . It was awful.”

Emma still keeps in touch with Ryan Gosling. “I’ve asked him to read a couple of scripts,” she says. “I just really like hearing his viewpoint because I know that it’s never going to be tainted. He’s very much his own person . . . I only met him two years ago when we did ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love,’ but it was like meeting a member of your team or something.”

She appreciates Gosling’s mind too: And while every female who saw that movie became obsessed with Gosling’s body, Stone added, “I really like his brain.”

On who she adores as an actor/actress: “Gilda, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Gene Wilder — those were the people I grew up loving. John Candy might be my acting hero. He’s … someone who can find the humor in the dramatic moments … I’d love to be that kind of an actor. Gene Wilder is that way, too. Gilda was that way. Steve Martin . . . The funniest ones are.”

On being anti-bucket list: “I won’t make a bucket list, because I’m so afraid that I’ll die and then people will find my bucket list and be like, ‘Oh, she didn’t get to do that…’”

Presenting at the Oscars: “That I’m about to go on stage at the Oscars with Ben Stiller. That’s what I’m thinking. The second I walked out it felt like being in a sketch comedy show when I was 12 on my youth-theater stage again, and I wasn’t scared anymore. But before that, the anticipation was so great. Then I just realized, ‘It’s just like everything else, man.’ My great goal in life is to try to remember that everything is of equal value. That moment was no greater than any of my moments walking out on stage in my youth theater as a kid. It felt the exact same way — and it should feel the exact same way . . . But then you do have the moment when you look out and you’re like, “Holy s—. It’s Meryl Streep.”

[From Page Six & NYDN]

I love that she says John Candy is her acting hero! That’s a wonderful choice. I get so sick of Marilyn Monroe worship or Elizabeth Taylor worship and all of that stuff – finally, a young actress who is like, “I wish I could be as good as John Candy.” As for the Gosling stuff… before Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were really “established” as a couple and before Ryan and Eva Mendes got coupled up, there were rumors that Gosling and Stone might have had something (a “steamy makeout session”). I’m not sure if that really happened or not, but I’d like to think that it did and that Emma broke Gosling’s heart and he only got with Eva Mendes on the rebound. That’s just how I like to think of it.

‘Amazing Spider-Man’ wins the weekend (& Katy Perry crashes): did you see it?

Andrew Garfield

Apparently, a lot of you went and watched The Amazing Spider-Man over the weekend. Did you love it or not? Even though I really dig Emma Stone, I didn’t see it myself because Spidey has never appealed to me although I do admire his flexibility. Regardless of my hangups with the character, the movie (which broke the Tuesday opening record last week) pulled in an additional $140 over the weekend to bring its worldwide total to an estimated $341.2 million. That’s not too shabby for a man in tights.

Holdovers Ted and Brave claimed the second and third spots while Savages entered the fray in fourth place. The other wide-release newcomer, Katy Perry: Part of Me, landed at (ouch!) number eight with a mere $10.2 million. At least the budget was only $12 million, right? I reviewed the movie for Pajiba, and it wasn’t as bad as I imagined it would be, but it was still fairly insufferable. Here’s a box-office analysis from Deadline:

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

The Amazing Spider-Man is an easy #1 with a $65M first weekend. That gives the 3D reboot a 6-day total of $140M through Sunday and $341.2M cume worldwide. The film opened last weekend in 13 countries and this weekend is open in a total of 70 territories. It grossed an estimated $129.1M this weekend, bringing the overseas cume to $201.6M. “In the world of relaunched franchises, this is a spectacular success by any measure,”Sony gushed. The film received an ‘A-’ Cinemascore “and that strong word of mouth is also supported by our own exit scores with very high definite recommend numbers across all demos,” All in all a nice haul, but only middling when it comes to top moneymakers for any first 6-day time period. Especially considering Spidey is Marvel’s most popular character. Little wonder that Sony is fast-tracking the next installment of its new trilogy with fresh villains and storylines that should spark more interest and box office in this too-soon reboot that was just a retread of the original origins saga.

The newest major studio film, Oliver Stone’s adult crime drama Savages, is looking like $16.1M for the weekend. That’s a better than expected opening for a violent ‘Hard R’ pic with no proven stars. As you know, Universal made the decision to move this R-rated actioner from the safe harbor of a September 28th release (where The Town, a similar R-rated crime film, performed so well in 2010) to this very crowded summer slot. As a result, Savages could only release on 2,627 screens. Dumb move? Those better-than-average trailers made this look like a perfect fall movie. But the studio felt midweek numbers would be better and Savages could counterprogram Ice Age 4 next weekend. On the other hand, audiences gave Savages only a ‘C+’ CinemaScore, which will result in poor word-of-mouth. Good thing it was made for only $45M.

Struggling is the $12M low budget Katy Perry’s Part Of Me which will do around $7.1M for its first weekend and $10.2M for its first 4 days in release. “I guess it will take 5 days to gross its budget,” a Paramount exec joked about the Insurge pic’s cold reception at the box office. Earth to Hollywood: no one cares about Katy beyond a handful of tween/teen girls. Not even Russell Brand anymore.

[From Deadline]

Blakc Lively won’t take kindly to having Savages described as a film “with no proven stars,” right? Well, it’s a true statement, especially with Taylor Kitsch and hit-and-miss Benicio Del Toro on board … along with John Travolta. Remember when Travolta used to really be a draw? Now he’s just known for (allegedly) grabbing masseuse butts and is finding himself downplayed in studio promotional materials. How sad.

As for Katy Perry, it’s nice to learn that her reign as pop princess might soon be coming to an end. Even with a small budget, $10.2 million over four days is pretty embarrassing considering that the Justin Bieber movie was made for $13 million and still managed to gross $29.5 million during its opening weekend. At this point, the Bieb is now more powerful than Katy, and he didn’t even bother to exploit an ex-husband during his movie. Give him time though. Give him time.

Emma Stone covers Vogue UK: lovely or not as good as the US cover?

Emma Stone

Emma Stone covers the July issue of Vogue UK, and I have to say that this cover is not nearly as interesting as Emma’s recent domestic Vogue cover and pictorial. At the same time, however, Emma looks a lot more like herself on this cover, so I can’t complain. And yes, I do realize that a lot of you prefer her as a ginger, but Emma is a natural blonde, and I think she looks completely lovely (and full of poise) with either hair shade.

Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man has already hit theaters on this side of the pond, and Sony is hoping for a huge hit at the box office. The studio needn’t fear though because the movie has already shattered previous records (and most pre-expectations) to achieve the best Tuesday opening of all time:

More fireworks at the North American box office on the eve of U.S. Independence Day. My sources say Sony Pictures’ superhero reboot The Amazing Spider-Man opened with $35M (though some rival studios put the number in the neighborhood of $32M tonight). It easily sets a new domestic record for a Tuesday opening – helped by its 3D premium pricing – and is ahead of the original 2D Transformers ($27.8M) that debuted on Tuesday July 3rd, 2007. “That is one huge number,” a Sony exec gushed to me tonight. “Unbelievable start to what should be a very exciting 6 days.”

I’m told Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man received an ‘A-’ Cinemascore from audiences (an ‘A’ from under age 18 moviegoers) which should spur good word of mouth.

[From Deadline]

Are you going to see the movie? It wasn’t really on my radar since I’m not a fan of reboots in general, but the Cinemascore has me intrigued. Emma Stone is always good, and Andrew Garfield is a cutie. So have you seen the movie, and should I go watch it too?

Emma Stone in Chanel at the LA ‘Spider-Man’ premiere: adorable or fug?

Last night was the big Hollywood premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man. It comes out today next week. Are you going to see it? I’m not. And it’s not because of any dislike of the people involved – I really do wish Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone all the happiness and career success in the world. But the Spider-Man franchise is exhausting, and I’m kind of over it. But I still like looking at the premiere photos, so let’s jump in, shall we?

Emma Stone wore this white and pink Chanel dress for the LA premiere. Thoughts? I don’t hate it. It looks like something Diane Kruger would wear. I don’t hate the bustle/hip thing (words are failing me right now), and I think that overall, Emma looks pretty cute. Cuter than she’s looked for most of the Spider-Man promotional tour, at least. My one complaint: the pink embellishment/embroidery is too heavy, and it ADDS weight to Emma’s small frame and makes her look thick-waisted. Another complaint: for the love of God, she needs to do something different to her hair. Also: I LOVE HER RING!!!!!!!! Can someone get me an ID on the ring?

More photos…Rhys Ifans and Anna Friel. Hate her dress, love his shoes.

God, I love Martin Sheen. I’ve been doing my own little West Wing marathon lately. He really is wonderful.

Spidey himself, Andrew Garfield. He doesn’t photograph well. At all.

Denis Leary. Controversial opinion: I would hit it. I love him.

Matthew Gray Gubler was at the premiere! Enjoy, Gube fangirls.

Emma Stone wears Jason Wu, Bottega Veneta in Italy: lovely or boring?

I really hope this is the last leg of the promotional tour for The Amazing Spider-Man. I think Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield hope it is too. All last week, Emma and Andrew were touring Europe with photo calls and premiere – the week before they had been in Asia. So… they’re probably pretty sick of it by now. I know Emma’s stylist must be sick of it by now, because they’re running out of clothes.

So… these are photos from hopefully the last stop in Europe – Rome, Italy. Emma wore white Jason Wu for the day-time photo call, and then black Bottega Veneta for the premiere. The photo call pics are all the evidence I need for “Why Emma Should Not Be A Blonde”. Who does she look like? I can’t even put my finger on it. There’s some Naomi Watts in there. A little bit like Jennifer Aniston too. Basically, she looks kind of bland and like every other blonde-ish actress. GO BACK TO GINGER.

As for the Bottega Veneta… I like the dress. I think it’s flattering and pretty and well-made. And I think the styling makes her look like Elizabeth Banks. Right? I could totally see Elizabeth Banks in this whole look, down to the hair and makeup. Oh, well.

PS… What is Emma’s obsession with peplums/dust ruffles/biscuit flounces? She has A Peplum Problem.

Emma Stone in D&G, Roksanda Ilincic in Madrid: adorable or awful?

Madrid agrees with Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield. Maybe it was the light, maybe it was the food, maybe it was a decent night’s sleep or maybe it was just a really great, bouncy hotel bed and naughty hotel sex. Whatever it was, The Amazing Spider-Man photo call and premiere photos from Madrid are probably my favorite from the whole publicity tour. Andrew and Emma finally seem connected and flirty and adorable and OMG I want to watch them be cute together forever.

Of course, it wasn’t all good news. While Emma’s hair and makeup looked decent, she continued her run of looking better at the photo call than at the premiere. At the photo call she wore this beautiful sort-of color-blocked Roksanda Ilincic dress and Louboutins. It doesn’t really seem “summery” but I love the colors and I like it a lot on Emma. Yes, that turquoise part looks like a dust ruffle. I give you that one. But I have the feeling that it was a lot cuter in person.

For the premiere, Emma wore this milkmaid-esque, WTF-is-happening Dolce & Gabbana. I’m sorry for those of you who will defend this, but it’s TERRIBLE. It’s an awful design. It’s unflattering, it’s dated and it looks very much like someone’s tablecloth, complete with white (crotch) doilies. Why was it so difficult for Emma to find cute outfits to wear during this promotional tour?!? WHY?!

Emma Stone in white Andrew Gn in Berlin: totally 80s or totally fine?

In retrospect, I probably could have been less harsh about Emma Stone’s goth-y getup in Paris two nights ago. But quite honestly, I was shocked by how different – in a bad way – she looked. She lost a lot of weight over the past year, and the blonde hair is making her look A) older, B) washed-out and C) strung-out. I know Emma-loonies always cry “BUT SHE’S A NATURAL BLONDE!” Not really. I mean, she might have been blonde when she was a kid, but judging from her roots, she’s more of a medium-brunette. And it shows – some women simply don’t have the skin tone to pull off blonde. I think Emma is one of them. Rachel McAdams is another. Nicole Kidman too. Three women who all look younger and prettier with darker hair, and three women who insist on going for too light hair shades. UGH.

Anyway, these are photos of Emma and Andrew Garfield in Berlin yesterday. They had an Amazing Spider-Man photo call (Emma in black) and a premiere (Emma in white). The black Martin Grant dress is pretty cute – it’s simple, it’s age-appropriate, it doesn’t feel like Emma is trying to remake herself into a 44-year-old vampire. As for the white Andrew Gn for the premiere… hideous. Dated. It looks so ‘80s! I swear, I’ve seen this dress in such 80s classics as Working Girl, Crocodile Dundee and Say Anything. Plus, white isn’t Emma’s color.

I guess I should start approaching Emma’s style the same way I approach Kristen Stewart’s. They’re close in age – Kristen turned 22 a few months ago, and Emma turns 24 in November. Both are girls on the rise, and their Hollywood ascent has been swift and, at times, brutal. Both are still learning about fashion and what looks good on them, and both are struggling with the idea that they have to be “red-carpet ready” and “looking professional” when both ladies have simpler, less fussy tastes. I just thought Emma gave a sh-t about fashion, and she found it fun – whereas it seems like Kristen really doesn’t care or find it fun. But really, they’re the same at this point… Kristen might even be coming out ahead, style-wise. My approach to K-Stew has become, “Well, she’s learning. Every red carpet is a lesson learned.” I need to start doing that with Emma.

Emma Stone in black Gucci for the Paris ‘Spider-Man’ premiere: awful & terrible?

OMG, these photos are so BAD. Poor Emma Stone. Poor Andrew Garfield. I really do feel like The Amazing Spider-Man is going to be a blunder – perhaps a well-made, well-executed blunder, but the box office is going to suck. That’s just how I’m feeling right now, and God knows, I’ve been wrong before.

Anyway, these are photos of Emma and Andrew at the Paris premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man. I think their styles are telegraphing the film’s bad performance. While I’m not strictly opposed to a stylish man wearing a maroon Balenciaga suit on a red carpet, that man better be Robert Downey Jr., not Andrew Garfield. Instead of looking stylish, I think Andrew looks like a cartoon. He simply doesn’t photograph well – I know I say that about a lot of people, but seriously. Andrew is a good-looking, talented young man, and he’s simply not photogenic.

As for Emma… she went for this completely horrible Gucci. This is making me long for the Elie Saab jumpsuit from the UK premiere, and I really didn’t care for the Saab either. SHE LOOKS AWFUL. She was once a beautiful, spunky, ginger standout. And now she looks like every other too-skinny Hollywood blonde. The blonde hair washes her out. The black washes her out. The blood-red lipstick is a mistake. This whole thing is a catastrophe.
