Emma Watson in an LBD to promote ‘Bling Ring’ in NYC: quite lovely or boring?

Emma Watson

These are photos of The Bling Ring‘s special screening in New York City last night. I’m still not convinced that this movie is going to be “all that,” and while I did enjoy Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, her directing style turned to one of excess somewhere around Marie Antoinette. Oh well, I’m sure this movie probably wasn’t that expensive to make with Emma Watson as the only real star plus a bunch of unknown actresses and actors, so the film will probably make modest returns.

Emma wore a rather subdued little black dress that I thought was pretty cute and featured a v-neck and low back with a slightly ruffled hemline. This is the sort of dress I would wear if I could get away with not wearing a bra. I can appreciate that while Emma is the star of the premiere, she didn’t wear anything huge or flashy, and she looks so lovely while embracing her natural skin color and not going for the orange vibe like her movie character. Plus, that sleek hair and slash of crimson lipstick are just yummy.

Emma Watson

Sofia Coppola played it safe on the red carpet as per her usual routine with a floaty white dress that looks like an extra-long t-shirt. Her hair looks exactly like mine does at this very moment, which tells me that we’re both in need of a change.

Here are photos of Jonny Lee Miller, Steven Tyler, and Terry Richardson. I like to call this series, “From Hot … to Not.”

Emma Watson in Chanel at ‘The Bling Ring’ LA premiere: stunning or terrible?

Here are some photos of Emma Watson at last night’s LA premiere of The Bling Ring (directed by Sofia Coppola). I’m making a conscious decision not to include photos of Emma’s costars, mostly because I don’t recognize them on sight, and I don’t have the inclination to double-check and compare the cast list versus “random famewhores who came to the premiere”. Emma is the star of the ensemble, that’s what’s important (to me).

Emma wore Chanel to the premiere, her second red carpet appearance in two days (she was at the This Is The End premiere two nights ago as well). Even though I applauded Emma for wearing pants to a premiere yesterday, I really disliked that weird Mouret bustier, and I really don’t hate this Chanel Fall 2013 tweed dress. Yes, it’s very much a “default Young Hollywood” look, but it’s flattering and cute and age-appropriate. Her heels are Giuseppe Zanotti. I especially like her hair too – a fun look with braids. I really didn’t care for her other hair look.

Also – and I hope this is the last time we’ll ever mention this in context with Emma Watson – she categorically denied that she is in any way associated with 50 Shades of Grey. Gross. Why would ANYONE even want her to play Anastasia Steele? That part sucks, and Emma would do a terrible job in it.

More photos from the premiere – Sofia Coppola looking really good in Louis Vuitton, Felicity Jones is morphing into Zooey Deschanel, Jeanne Tripplehorn in a weird sack dress, Chloe Sevigny looking righteous and weird in Louis Vuitton, Gwen Stefani in terrible Balmain pants, and Paris Hilton, of course.

Emma Watson in Roland Mouret at ‘This Is the End’ premiere: amazing or awful?

Here are some photos of Emma Watson at last night’s LA premiere of This Is the End, that weird-looking sci-fi/comedy/whatever starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, and that whole Judd Apatow crew. The basic gist is that aliens invade earth and attack humans… in the midst of a big Hollywood party. Emma has a small part and James Franco has already had some bitchy things to say about how she walked off the set when things got too hardcore (although he didn’t specifically name her, but everyone knows he was talking about her). I seem to remember Seth Rogen having something to say about it too.

Emma is wearing a Roland Mouret bustier, Phillip Lim pants, Salvatore Ferragamo shoes and she’s carrying a Chanel clutch. I like the idea of this ensemble more than I like the execution. I think it’s great that Emma is mixing up the “Young Hollywood Uniform” away from miniskirts and cleavage – pants are awesome! I just don’t care for this Mouret bustier. It’s not flattering on her. And suddenly it seems like Emma’s hair is really long, right? Is this her real hair or did she get extensions? Whatever is happening, it’s sort of interesting.

Below are more photos from the premiere. I’m including pics of Seth Rogen and his wife Lauren, Mindy Kaling (in a terrible dress), Jessica Szohr (looking particularly orange), Carmen Electra, and Paul Rudd (with terrible hair).

Emma Watson, obsessive diarist: ‘I must have 10 different personal diaries’

Emma Watson has a new interview with Rookie, an online magazine. The interview is super-long – you can read the whole thing here. What’s interesting about it is that the interviewer is a couple of years younger than Emma, so it’s like two very young women just gossiping with each other and it’s sort of revealing for Emma. There’s stuff that I already knew about her – she’s an anal retentive little thing, she’s insecure about her fame and talent, but she’s also sort of full of herself (in the way that most young women are hyper-self-aware and full of themselves). Here are some highlights:

The Bling Ring people: “Sofia filmed it in such a nonjudgmental way, though—she never tells the audience how they should feel about these characters, which I think might be quite unsettling for people who want to be told, ‘We should hate these people.’ She made it so true to life, it almost feels like a documentary.”

She’s obsessed with The Carrie Diaries: “My final is tomorrow, so I’ve been living like a hermit. The only thing I have been watching—such a guilty pleasure, it’s the perfect study break ’cause you just don’t have to concentrate too hard—is The Carrie Diaries… So embarrassing to admit that! A 23-year-old that’s fully been watching The Carrie Diaries.

On Sofia Coppola: “It was a real dream of mine. I came to the part in a very roundabout way: I told my agent how much I loved Sofia’s work, and she’s like, ‘You should meet with her producer and [unofficial] casting director, Fred Roos,’ and I did, and we got on really well, and that led to meeting Sofia, and she told me she was working on a project with young people in it. I read the script for The Bling Ring and I just got obsessed. For Sofia Coppola to be making a film which is a meditation on film and celebrity culture and what that all means, how it impacts society, and the psyches of young women in particular—I was just like, ‘OK, I have to be in your movie. I really, really, really want to be in your movie.’”

Feeling like an impostor: “It’s called the impostor syndrome. It’s almost like the better I do, the more my feeling of inadequacy actually increases, because I’m just going, Any moment, someone’s going to find out I’m a total fraud, and that I don’t deserve any of what I’ve achieved. I can’t possibly live up to what everyone thinks I am and what everyone’s expectations of me are. It’s weird—sometimes [success] can be incredibly validating, but sometimes it can be incredibly unnerving and throw your balance off a bit, because you’re trying to reconcile how you feel about yourself with how the rest of the world perceives you.”

She’s an obsessive diarist and journaler: “I don’t know what it is. I’ve always kept and collected things, and I’ve always been interested in the idea of diaries. I must have 10 different personal diaries: I keep a dream diary, I keep a yoga diary, I keep diaries on people that I’ve met and things that they’ve said to me, advice that they’ve given me. I keep an acting journal. I keep collage books. They’ve given me a place in which I can try to figure myself out, because those kinds of ideas feel too personal to put out into the public or even discuss with anyone else. It allows me to get things out of my head and work them out in a way that feels safe, which is really helpful. I can kind of try things out and play around with things.”

She’s going back to Brown after taking a couple of years off: “I got famous very young, and [college] gave me a safe zone where I could figure things out without people projecting onto me their ideas of what they wanted me to be, or thought I should be. I really like the fact that [Brown] has a very open curriculum, that there aren’t any requirements. Really, I’ve kind of been in charge of my own education since I started out on Potter when I was 9 or 10, and I liked that I could design my own major if I wanted to, and I could take independent studies if I wanted to on subjects that weren’t necessarily in the curriculum. I did an independent study on the psychology and philosophy of how and why we fall in love, which was awesome.”

What she wants to do next: “In terms of my next project, I really want to do a romantic comedy. I’ve been looking for the perfect script. I’m getting to the point where I’m like, “I just need to write the damn thing myself,” because it’s so hard to find something that’s original and really funny. But I’d love to do something like that, just because the last two or three movies I did were kind of heavy.”

Director-chaser: “I’m a real director chaser. I really want to work with Danny Boyle or Ang Lee, I’d love to work with Lynne Ramsay, I’d love to work with Tom Hooper, David Fincher—I have this endless list. I’ll do whatever as long as I can be part of someone else’s creative vision, someone who isn’t just creating something as a piece of entertainment, but is genuinely creating a piece of art. Though it’s nice if it’s commercially successful at the same time. [Laughs] I’m big on directors, more than I am about working with particular actors.”

[From Rookie]

That bit about her diaries and journals is interesting – there’s something kind of “Beyonce’s 24-7 Archive” about it, only Emma’s version is still kind of cute. As for Emma returning to Brown… I kind of lost interest in her stop-go education after she took that second or third hiatus from school. She went to Oxford for a year, right? And she’ll be coming back to Brown next school year, like in the fall? We’ll see. I bet those plans change a few more times.

Emma Watson in Chanel at the Cannes premiere: lovely or disappointing?

Ugh, this is kind of a let-down from Emma Watson, isn’t it? These are pics from last night’s Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Bling Ring. Emma wore… Chanel. But I really didn’t think it was Chanel at all before a looked it up because… this just doesn’t read like Chanel, right? The fit is off (especially in the bust), the darting looks cheap, and this whole endeavor looks like some just-starting-out designer’s throw-away. What are you doing, Karl Lagerfeld?! The one thing I like: there are little pouch pockets on the skirt. They’re not flattering, but I like the idea.

I really liked Emma’s photocall look – she wore a cute jewel-toned dress by Christopher Kane – and I thought her styling for that look was right-on too. Ladies, you can wear less makeup during the day. In fact, you SHOULD wear less makeup for day looks. But when you’re going to an evening event, especially when it’s the red carpet for the Cannes Film Festival, you can and should do a darker evening look with your makeup. I’m struggling to see if Emma even changed up her makeup at all from day to night – her skin looks beautiful and dewy, but she seems very “undone” for the red carpet.

During the press conference for the film, Emma was asked how she prepared for her role in The Bling Ring and she admitted: “I watched a lot of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Hills, and I tried to understand the psychology of this kind of girl as much as possible. I didn’t want her to be just a parody. The accent was hard as it was a particular kind of dialect. I also thought a lot about what her parents must have been like.” Ha. She’s trying to be nice, isn’t she? She could have said, “I watching the Kardashian shows because they are the faces of vulgar famewhoring and materialism.”

Oh, and Sofia Coppola wore Louis Vuitton. I kind of love that Sofia wore a short(er) dress on the red carpet as opposed to some fancy gown. Sofia can pull it off.

Emma Watson, 23: ‘I’ve never been in a terrible rush to be seen as a woman’

I was all prepared to dislike Emma Watson’s W Magazine pictorial (photographs by Michael Thompson), but I actually think it works. Emma’s styled as an old-school screen siren, and while I would be rolling my eyes if the magazine tried to make her look like Marilyn Monroe, they succeeded in making her look sort of like Barbara Stanwyck or Jennifer Jones (two criminally underrated stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era). Anyway, Emma is promoting The Bling Ring (which she’s currently promoting in Cannes), and you can read her full W Mag piece here. Some highlights (this is most of the interview):

W: What is the first movie you remember seeing?
EW: Pretty Woman. I was 7, which was way, way too young. That was when I started loving Julia Roberts and American movies. As a child, I loved being onstage. I loved singing, I loved the lights, I loved the adrenaline. I even loved learning lines. I was completely obsessive. A friend of my mother’s found a tape of me auditioning for Hermione. I wanted to get really, really good at my lines. There was reel after reel, take after take, of me doing the same thing over and over again.

Did you ever feel the pressure of having to be a shining example to young girls worldwide?
I was always a very serious child. I remember being 13 and girls in my class saying, “So-and-so is going to kiss so-and-so on the school fields.” I said, “That’s stupid. They’re too young for it to matter—he doesn’t love her, and that’s just a waste of time.” It’s amazing that I had any friends! [Laughs] So I was the right child to get cast: I loved the responsibility.

Did you have your first kiss on camera?
Thankfully, no. I’ve always been fascinated by Elizabeth Taylor, and I had read that her first kiss happened on a film set, which actually made me a little sad. You need to have normal experiences of your own. I’ve never wanted to grow up too fast: I wanted to wear a sports bra until I was 22! The allure of being sexy never really held any excitement for me. I’ve never been in a terrible rush to be seen as a woman.

And yet, in The Bling Ring, you are a little bit of a bad girl.
With Nicki, I was really taking on a character. Some of her lines are so crazy and absurd—making sure she wasn’t a parody was a challenge.

Did her outfits help you get into character?
Who wouldn’t love to go to work in Uggs and very low-slung tracksuit bottoms? The iconic detail of Nicki is her tramp stamp. It’s a lotus flower, a Buddhist-like symbol just above her butt crack. Really classy! [Laughs] And at one point I told the costume designer, “You can see my bra strap in this top; shouldn’t we pin it?” And she said, “No, sweetie—Nicki is all about her bra strap showing.” I was like, Right, okay, different mind-set.

When did you realize you were famous?
I lived in denial for as long as I possibly could. Until the age of 18, I would take the Oxford Tube, which is a public bus. Then it got to the point where the fact that I was on the bus would spread from one end to the other. I’d think, Why am I doing this to myself? Ignoring fame was my rebellion, in a funny way. I was insistent on being normal and doing normal things. It probably wasn’t advisable to go to college in America and room with a complete stranger. And it probably wasn’t wise to share a bathroom with eight other people in a coed dorm. Looking back, that was crazy.

I’m surprised you chose to come to America.
I’ve always loved America. When we came here with Harry Potter, everyone was so warm. Eventually, all of my friends were American, and I think that’s why I was attracted to playing Americans, even extreme ones like Nicki. When I’m presented with a character, I think, Hmmm…I have not had this experience. I don’t really know what this would be like. I’ll have the experience through the character.

Do you have a Hollywood crush?
My cinematic crush has been pretty much the same since I was 12: Kevin Costner. I met him in an elevator the other day, and I couldn’t even speak. He said hello, because he is lovely like that, and I couldn’t say anything back.

Kevin Costner is so American.
Of course! Kevin Costner is forever. And America too!

[From W Magazine]

I think it’s sweet that she’s so enamored with America and American films. I feel like there are so many British and European actors like that, actors who dream of coming to Hollywood to work in big Hollywood movies.

I do wonder about this statement though – “I’ve never wanted to grow up too fast: I wanted to wear a sports bra until I was 22! The allure of being sexy never really held any excitement for me. I’ve never been in a terrible rush to be seen as a woman.” Do normal 23-year-olds speak like that? I think teenagers – teenage girls in particular – are always in a rush to be seen as older, to be considered women rather than girls. But maybe things have changed since I was a teenager. Sigh. Emma makes me feel like an old fart.

Emma Watson in Christopher Kane for Cannes ‘Bling Ring’ photocall: so cute?

Ah, I forgot that The Bling Ring is premiering at Cannes. And it’s happening today! These are some photos from The Bling Ring photocall just a short time ago. Sofia Coppola looks especially cute, I think, but doesn’t she live in France most of the time? So of course she knows how to dress for Cannes – I even think her outfit looks slightly nautical, which is totally in line with CFF.

Emma Watson, star of The Bling Ring, chose this maroon Christopher Kane Fall 2013 collection dress with some kind of feathery accents. At first I thought the accents were bejeweled something or other, and I’m pleased to see I was wrong. I think if it was glittery and bejeweled, it would have been wrong for the photocall, but with the feathers it’s just a really cute little dress. It looks great on her too! I love her minimalist styling here too – I don’t know if she’s got a really great makeup person or if she’s just wearing barely any makeup, but she looks so fresh and dewy. Good hair too – I always think she looks better with her hair slicked back or pulled back in some way, as opposed to loose with some bangs.

I’m excited to see what Emma wears for the premiere! I’m excited to see what Sofia pulls out too. Maybe some Marc Jacobs? Or is she over Marc?

Did we ever watch the full-length trailer for The Bling Ring? I actually think Emma is doing a bang-up job with the accent work, and she’s not someone I associate with “the ability to do an American accent”. But she does that bored, nasal Valley Girl accent really well.

Emma Watson in cutout Prabal Gurung at the Met Gala: boring or striking?

I love to see what Emma Watson wears on the red carpet because she loves contemporary fashion, she can rock some tiny micro minis, and she takes risks. So I thought that last night was a real missed opportunity for her. She wore this cutout Prabal Gurung wrap-look dress which just fell flat for me. For any other red carpet, for something like a movie premiere or an event, this would have worked well. It fits her like a dream, it highlights her great figure, and I love her sleek hair. This was supposed to be a punk night, and I would have loved to have seen her mix it up with some contrasting patterns or even some wild accessories like Sarah Jessica Parker. As it was, this was too safe. Her only nod to punk is an asymmetric earring. Still, she looks super cute.

Also, in some photos the dress looks navy blue, but I think that’s just due to the flash. It was probably black.

Uma Thurman baffled me in this green Zac Posen fishtail gown. She looked pretty, she really worked that dress, but this is in no way punk. These designers know the theme well ahead of time, they could have worked in a funky belt for her, but she just wore a dress more suited for the Oscars with glamorous styling and classic accessories. Very pretty, but staid and not mixing it up at all.

Julianne Hough at least tried a little in this reinterpretation of a strapless princess gown, from TopShop. Kaiser covered Nicole Richie’s TopShop gown, and both women did have punky looks. I like the geometric spider web-type print on the gown, the irregular hemline with a black tulle underskirt, her studded shoes and her black and white manicure. She even had some cool overdone eyelashes paired with nude makeup. Whoever styled Julianne did a great job. I think she’s wearing a spider ring too!

As we heard would happen, Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn made their red carpet debut as a couple. All I can do it smirk and shake my head. How is this plain white dress with gold drop earrings “punk”? Something nice: she toned down the raccoon eye makeup and her hair looks pretty.

Emma Watson in Maxime Simoens at the MTV Movie Awards: adorable, bizarre?

Emma Watson was the recipient of the “Trailblazer” award at the MTV Movie Awards last night, presented by a lovely Eddie Redmayne rocking the hell out of a leather jacket. His whole outfit was like catnip to me, but I digress. Emma was super cute in a short Maxine Simoens white and black contemporary gown with some cool architectural details along the neckline. When I saw this dress on camera last night I thought it was by Brood, as I covered it when Emma wore a similar dress by that designer last year. Emma loves contemporary, edgy kind of sci-fi little dresses and this is better than anything we’ve seen her in to date, in my opinion. It’s not as busy as her previous dresses but it still has plenty of eyecatching details.

Emma was so pretty last night and I especially liked her simple hair and understated makeup. Her shoes are by Proenza Schouler and they’re hot in my opinion. They could have overwhelmed the dress but instead they match the look without looking too “matchy”.

In terms of Emma’s speech, she was visibly moved that she had won an award for her career (at 22!) and I found myself rooting for her. She opened up a little bit, saying that she was more like Hermione than we might have known, admitting “I was completely the eager beaver in school. I was the girl in the front of the class who was the first person to put her hand up, and it’s often not cool… I’ve often gotten teased mercilessly, but I’ve found that ultimately if you truly pour your heart into what you believe in, even if it makes you vulnerable, amazing things can and will happen. I’m so honored to be receiving this and I promise to keep making the best work I can for all of you.” Here’s Emma’s speech. Oh and this clip doesn’t have Jonah Hill’s awesome intro for Emma, in which he claimed that they were going to costar in 50 Shades together and that his safeword was “tangerine.” Hilarious.

Also there we have Chloe Moretz in Louis Vuitton, surprisingly, although I guess I should have known since this denim dress looks like one of their fug patchwork purses. I was trying to figure out when Chloe, 16, went dark with her hair. She’s had dark hair for the past few months, and I think it’s so pretty. It’s very flattering and suits her coloring. I like her styling here.

Kylie Minogue looked bizarre in an alternating silver and blue stripe and see-through mess Paco Rabanne dress. It looks like Kylie gained a little much-needed weight, which suits her well, but that might just be the effect of this ugly dress. You can do better Kylie!

Melissa McCarthy is probably in David Meister here, he’s her go-to designer, (although I can’t confirm that) and I like that she went with a pantsuit instead of a dress. Those stacked necklaces are cool and standout well with the simple black outfit she’s wearing. I don’t like her shoes, though, they look a little “panto”. Her hair is so pretty. She surely has extensions, but they look natural.

And finally Alexis Knapp was there. She’s Ryan Phillippe’s random baby mama and she dated Seth MacFarlane for a hot minute. I didn’t know she was in Pitch Perfect, I have to see that! Kaiser is getting me excited for it. She wore this horrible pepto-pink dress with pagoda sleeves (I looked it up) and some kind of white Rorschach pattern across the front. Maybe with some different styling or shoes she could have made this dress work somewhat, but as it is it’s too childish looking. Just because people gush over a hairdo on Pinterest doesn’t mean you should wear it on the red carpet. Not cute.

Emma Watson covers GQ UK, styled as her ‘vain, amoral’ Bling Ring character

Before you start yelling about how trashy Emma Watson looks on the cover of the May issue of GQ UK, just know that she’s “in character” as Nikki from The Bling Ring. Meaning, she’s supposed to look trashy and she’s supposed to look like a sort of LA-escort/crack burglar. It’s actually a smart choice for styling, I think – many people believe that The Bling Ring will be Emma’s first big breakout, her “adult” role that changes her career from “Harry Potter child actress” into “sexy actress capable of playing adult roles.” Some highlights from the interview:

Deciding to do The Bling Ring: “When I read the script and I realized that essentially it was a meditation on fame and what it’s become to our society, I had to do it. The character is everything that I felt strongly against — she’s superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral. She’s all of these things and I realized that I hated her. How do you play someone you hate? But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job or my role as an actress could be.”

Emma doesn’t want to be typecast: “I was open-minded about doing anything but the one thing I didn’t want to do was get myself into a corset because I was worried I would never get out again. I knew it would be a really comfortable thing to do, but I felt… I had to dive into something really different. This has been a really big departure for me. It’s a really big character. That’s so exciting for me because it meant I was really acting.”

[From GQ UK]

Ha, I like the part about “getting into a corset”. That’s SO true when you’re talking about English actresses. Once they put on the corset, that’s it. They just get offered endless period pieces. Kate Winslet fought against The Corset Typecast, as did Helena Bonham-Carter and Emma Thompson, all of whom were able to eventually move past their early successes in corseted dramas to do more modern work. It’s interesting that Emma is so aware of it, and that she’s actively avoiding the corset. As for Emma’s thoughts on her “vain, amoral” character – judgy much? No, I get it. The real Bling Ring girls were completely awful people, but what struck me was that they were pretty stupid too.

Meanwhile, Emma makes an appearance in the new red-band trailer for This Is the End. It looks pretty funny but the real star (for me) is Mindy Kaling going off about how she wants to bang Michael Cera. Beware, the language is totally NSFW.
