“30 Rock” & “Mad Men” lead Emmy nominations

Two of the five best shows on television (in my prestigious opinion) have snagged an incredibly high number of Emmy nominations. NBC’S 30 Rock and AMC’s Mad Men garnered 17 and 16 nominations, respectively. 30 Rock was no surprise – it’s one of only a handful of sitcoms left on the air – and one of less than a dozen that aren’t of the ABC/Disney Channel “family friendly” bland variety. The writing is consistently solid, and the jokes are starting to filter into the lexicon. I love 30 Rock so much I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant.

Tina Fey’s 30 Rock is among the leaders at the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, earning 17 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress (Fey) and Outstanding Lead Actor (Alec Baldwin).

AMC’s buzzed-about drama Mad Men nabbed 16 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, while ABC newcomer Pushing Daisies earned 12 nominations. The HBO historical drama John Adams earned the most nominations (23).

Despite the hubbub made Katherine Heigl’s decision to withdraw her nomination, Grey’s Anatomy received just five nods (it is not up for Outstanding Drama Series). Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson each received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series.

Desperate Housewives took home four nominations. Meanwhile, American Idol will face off against Project Runway, The Amazing Race, Top Chef and Dancing With The Stars for Outstanding Reality-competition Program.

[From Us Weekly]

The Emmys will air on September 21st. The relative snub towards Grey’s Anatomy is no surprise. Though I thought it was really ungracious of Katherine Heigl to say the things she said about the writers when she withdrew her name from the Emmy list, she was right. The show was horrible last season. It was pretty much unwatchable. And it wasn’t just due to the WGA strike. Anytime a show starts the season off with some lame storyline involving Heigl’s character trying to save a wounded deer – and ranting on in some unnatural, clichéd speech about why it’s important – it reeks of desperation and a complete lack of ideas.

Mad Men however, has got to be the absolute best drama on television (again in my less than humble opinion). I am constantly telling Celebitchy that she needs to stop taking care of her young child and family and prioritize by watching it. It’s a shame that it’s only on as a summer show. It’s nice to have something great to watch when the only new material is a bunch of reality crap, but the downside is that each season is only 13 episodes long. I’ve never been a fan of a single show put out by a cable network, but Mad Men is absolutely phenomenal. And needs better ratings. So this is essentially my plug to give it a shot so I don’t have to come up with something else to do on my Sunday nights.

Here’s a complete list of the 2008 Emmy nominees.

Britney Spears could get an Emmy nomination

An honest-to-God Emmy might find it’s way to Spears’ cheesy little paws.

For her double-shot guest appearance as Abby on CBS hit How I Met Your Mother, Brit-Brit is one of 41 actresses on the official ballot released by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to its voters.

[OK! Magazine]

Come September we will know for sure whether or not a Britney Spears’ Emmy nomination will become a reality. She has a rather sizable line up when it comes to the competition bucking for the award. Alyssa Milano is up for her “My Name is Earl” stint. I love the show and Alyssa is seasoned. I mean when you have Tony Danza as your stage father, how can you go wrong?

The always funny Sarah Silverman is also a force to be reckoned with. Her one episode appearance on “Monk” is on the ballot. Mary-Kate Olsen was on “Weeds” and secured a spot in the running for an Emmy as well. Meanwhile, a contender for last year’s Emmy race has pulled her name. Katherine Heigl refuses to submit her work on “Grey’s Anatomy” for a nomination. Why? Because she feels she didn’t “earn” it thanks to the “material this season.”

How bitchy is Izzy being!? Sure the show has gone downhill, but come on snotty.

Britney Spears is shown shopping at Lisa Klein on 6/10/08, thanks to WENN.

Emmy Awards: Worst Dressed

There were some doozies last night at the Emmys, with Ellen Pompeo taking the crown for worst hair and makeup in a poofy updo with 60s eye makeup and pale lips. Her dress wasn’t that bad, but the gold braided accessories just added to her dated, goofy look. Hayden Panetteire of Heroes wore a peach Marc Bouwer dress made of yards of fabric. She could have smuggled a sibling into the event under that dress. The top featured a brassiere with swirled design accented by a giant broach. An apt commentor on Just Jared said it was “a bad pregnant prom dress.”

Jennifer Morrison of House tried too hard in a silver one-shoulder flapper dress slit to the upper thigh that had too many pieces accented by thick lines and somehow managed to make the slender actress look like she had a tummy. It was pretty from the waist up, but it was too complicated overall. She almost didn’t make this list, as it’s not a terrible dress. Update: After seeing more pictures of Morrison’s dress, she definitely wasn’t one of the worst dressed and doesn’t deserve to be on this list. It only looked poorly cut from certain angles.

America Fererra, Eva Longoria, and Mary Louise-Parker all made Yahoos! best dressed top ten, but I thought their dresses were unflattering. Ferrerra usually looks gorgeous, but her Monique Lhuillier dress wasn’t cut well for her figure and I don’t like the weird spangly belt. Eva Longoria looked arrogant without reason as usual in a beaded Kaufman Franco that made her boobs look like tennis balls. She paired the silver dress with weird plain tan flats heels that look suited to a day at a country club, not an awards show. Mary Louise-Parker wore a red strapless gown that was decent, but the piece at the bottom flared out oddly and it was too tight all over.

Poor newly single Jenna Fischer of The Office looked ridiculous in a gray dress with gold leaves all over it and a big ‘ol bow underneath a strange gold braided belt. Just Jared quotes her as saying “I had to wear something that wouldn’t hurt my back,” as if trying to excuse her awful choice.

Mark Wahlberg’s wife, Rhea Durham, wore a peach cap-sleeve dress with a beaded top in a nipple-look starburst pattern and long skirt. I’ve seen it before, I’m trying to remember on whom, in another color. (On Mischa Barton at the Dead Man’s Chest Pirate’s premiere, thanks Katie for the tip.) It wasn’t as unattractive in the other color from what I remember.

Edie Falco’s dress was too tight but would have been passable if it wasn’t for all the black and white beaded flowers scattered on it. The random pattern of the beading makes them look like mistakes that you want to pick off, as if she was hit by a wind filled with sticky little daisies.

Emmy Awards: Best Dressed

Last night’s Emmy awards were full of lovely gowns, with some notable hits and misses. We’ll have a “Worst Dressed” post coming up soon, and it was considerably easier to find ugly dresses at the event than it was to find ones that were spot on. The most beautiful gowns were just slightly risky with a touch of old Hollywood glamour. Simple shapes and bright colors were featured.

Thanks to JustJared for help with some of the dress designers. Yahoo! also has their top ten best and worst dressed last night, but I only agree with some of their choices.

Best Dressed: Heidi Klum in Dior by John Galliano, Portia DiRossi in Azzaro, Carrie Ann Inaba, a judge on Dancing with the Stars, in a lovely white satin and chiffon dress, and Kristen Bell of Veronica Mars in a beautiful blue strapless gown.

Beautiful runners up: Ali Larter of Heroes in red strapless Reem Acra, Kate Walsh of Grey’s in red satin, Teri Hatcher in Badgley Mischka, Minnie Driver in a canary v-neck dress with criss-cross front, Jennifer Love Hewitt in a strapless black dress with a gauzy skirt and subtle beading on the bodice.
