Emmys fashion: Blake Lively, Drew Barrymore & what’s left of Jessica Lange

fp_3642666_rij_emmys_set1_0
Generally, Emmy fashion tends to be very hit-or-miss. Some people show up looking either very budget, or totally flawless. This year was neither the best nor the worst in Emmy fashion. There was no one who showed up that made me scream “Oh, God! Why, why, why? Get thee to a stylist, Budget!” On the other side, there wasn’t anyone who made me sit up and yell “Yes! Best Dressed, hands down!” And, yes, I talk to my television. Speaking of, I watched the red carpet show on E!, and I was pleased to see Nene from The Real Housewives of Atlanta doing some commentary. Nene uttered my favorite line of the night, in regards to Ryan Seacrest’s interview with Stephen Moyer of True Blood. She said, “Black girls aren’t into vampires. That’s a white girl thing.”

The fashion trends this year seemed to be a hodgepodge: lots of girls were wearing metallics; many chose either an extreme blue, like a navy-black or a bright turquoise-teal, or a very, very pale ice-blue, almost white. The other trend was the one that needs to dragged out into the street and shot, the beige-nude color that too many girls wear, and very few can pull off.

My best dressed of the evening:

*Surprise, surprise, my absolute favorite of the evening was a Gossip Girl. I loved Blake Lively’s dress and styling. She wore a provocative, deep-V-neck, red Versace that showed off her flawless figure. Some will say she looked trampy. But if you’ve got that figure, you can wear that kind of dress and just look sexy. She showed the most skin of any girl there, but I think she stayed on the right side of the “classy” line. I also loved that she had her hair/extensions in one massive braid – it was a surprising choice, but it worked.

*Tina Fey, for thinking she’s an average girl with an average figure, but in reality, she’s a brainy bombshell. She chose a simple black dress that didn’t show off much skin, but I still liked it. She looked like herself, only slightly dressed up.

*Julia Louis-Dreyfus, in her teal strapless Vera Wang. The fit was perfection, the color was perfect for her, and she kept her hair and makeup very simple.

*Drew Barrymore – one of only two women that I saw who effectively pulled off a shade of beige. Her strapless rose-beige dress (I think it was Oscar de la Renta) was lovely, and she looked very elegant and classy. Great upswept hair, and good makeup.

*Honorable mentions: Sandra Oh – (for best use of a metallic with a mustard-gold strapless with some kind of embroidery); Heidi Klum (for looking like she was ready to give birth on the carpet, poor girl); Kyra Sedgwick (just because I love her, and her pink L’Wren Scott was surprisingly cute, feminine and girly); and Jenna Fischer (for most improved – she usually screws up her look completely, but she looked very pretty in a simple black strapless, good jewelry and good makeup).

Worst Dressed:

*Jessica Lange – The dress wasn’t even that bad. But everything felt off with her, from her face to her hair, to her sort of drugged-out eyes. She just seemed like a total mess of a once-gorgeous woman.

*Hayden Panettiere – Dina Lohan called, and she wants her look back. Seriously, Hayden could teach a class with Ali Lohan on how to look like a 40-something Rockette who has lived hard.

*Vanessa Williams – Once again, it wasn’t even the worst dress, although it did look cheap. The styling messed her up big-time, though. She looked very “budget beauty pageant third runner up” rather than “Emmys”.

Weird (but not necessarily bad) Dressed:

*I can’t decide whether I like Leighton Meester’s dress. The shoulder appliqués were too big, the makeup was overdone, the hair was messy, and she looked very shiny. And yet in a weird way, it all kind of worked.

*Mila Kunis – once again, I can’t decide if I like it. It made her look very “blood-soaked ballerina”. I liked the color on her, I liked her makeup and hair, but I didn’t love the whole look.

*January Jones – I think January’s problem is that she’s become famous for playing a character that is always in corsets, housedresses and anything that will make her look like Grace Kelly. So January rebels, and tries to be edgy and high-fashion. When I saw her on the red carpet, she looked uncomfortable – a totally rigid bustier will do that to you. The white-silver color is okay, the skirt is fine, so I’m left with the idea that she was simply trying too hard.

As for the men, very few deviated from the standard classic tux or well-tailored black suit. Some guys looked better than others – like Jon Hamm, Jason Segel, Simon Baker and John Krasinski. Some guys just looked a little “meh” – like Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Moyer (but his accent is a panty-dropper). It wasn’t a stunning night for fashion, but there was some good stuff there.

Also shown in order are Ginnifer Goodwin, Kathy Griffin, Steve Carell, Elizabeth Perkins, Julie Benz, Sigourney Weaver, Lisa Edelstein, Padma Lakshmi, Holly Hunter, Sarah Silverman, Marcia Gay Harden, Jane Krakowski, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kate Walsh, Christina Hendricks, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Alyson Hannigan, Cat Deeley, Neil Patrick Harris, Jennifer Morrison and Amaury Nolasco, Debra Messing, Elisabeth Moss and Fred Armisen, Olivia Wilde, Sally Field, Toni Collette, Mariska Hargitay, Chloe Sevigny, and Christina Applegate

Emmys 2009: Winners, losers & highlights

emmy_press_room_62_wenn2582
Before I get into the winners and losers, I just want to say a word about the host of the ceremony, Neil Patrick Harris. He was a brilliant choice as the host of the 2009 Emmys. He was funny, he was old-school, he was respectful, yet he infused the ceremony with an edgy vein. During the opening song, and in his first introduction, his voice was shaking, and he seemed very nervous, but after that, he was very good. It seemed at times like he was improvising, especially when he lost the Best Supporting Actor Emmy to Jon Cryer. NPH riffed on losing, and they cut to Cryer in the press room, and NPH was able to mock Cryer live. It was hilarious. I also liked the Doctor Horrible “break-in” piece – I thought it was going to be cheesy, but it worked. It took me more than an hour to figure out the running gag of talking about actors’ weird credits, but it was funny. My other favorite NPH moment was in the opening song, when he mentioned Christina Hendricks’ curves (Joan on Mad Men), then got distracted by Jon Hamm. It was great. NPH should get the Oscars gig – but he won’t.

Onto the winners and losers:

Drama Series: “Mad Men,” AMC
Comedy Series: “30 Rock,” NBC
Reality Series: “The Amazing Race,” CBS
Miniseries: “Little Dorrit” PBS.
Made-for-TV Movie: “Grey Gardens,” HBO
Actor, Drama Series: Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad,”
Actress, Drama Series: Glenn Close, “Damages,” FX Networks
Supporting Actor, Drama Series: Michael Emerson, “Lost,” ABC
Supporting Actress, Drama Series: Cherry Jones, “24,” Fox.
Actor, Comedy Series: Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock,” NBC
Actress, Comedy Series: Toni Collette, “United States of Tara,” Showtime
Supporting Actor, Comedy Series: Jon Cryer, “Two and a Half Men,” CBS
Supporting Actress, Comedy Series: Kristin Chenoweth, “Pushing Daisies,” ABC
Actor, Miniseries or Movie: Brendan Gleeson, “Into the Storm,” HBO
Actress, Miniseries or Movie: Jessica Lange, “Grey Gardens,” HBO
Supporting Actor, Miniseries or Movie: Ken Howard, “Grey Gardens,” HBO
Supporting Actress, Miniseries or Movie: Shohreh Aghdashloo, “House of Saddam”
Host, Reality Series: Jeff Probst, “Survivor,” CBS
Best Writing, Comedy or Variety: The Daily Show
Best Music & Lyrics: opening song of the Oscars, sung by Hugh Jackman
Outstanding Variety Show: The Daily Show

My personal highlights included:

* The first winner of the night, Kristin Chenoweth, and her sweet, emotional speech. She’s such a cute little hobbit, and I loved when she used her speech to try to get work on Mad Men or 24.

*Jon Cryer’s win for Best Supporting Actor – he was an underdog, and the look of pride on Charlie Sheen’s face was surprisingly nice. Plus, NPH played up the fake anger so much at Cryer having beaten him, Cryer got extra press.

*Everything about Ricky Gervais. From his mocking of the general attractiveness of television actors, to the specific mocking of Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson, Ricky can do no wrong. Loved that Ricky presented the award to his friend Jon Stewart, who then noted in his speech that The Daily Show team was “better looking than Ricky Gervais”. Scratch what I said about NPH – Ricky Gervais should be the host of an awards show.

*This isn’t really a highlight, but what is going on with Jessica Lange’s face? It’s not just Botox, right? Botox wouldn’t make it look like that. I thought she was going to give herself a stroke trying to raise an eyebrow.

* I loved that Lost won something, and I loved that it was Michael Emerson (Ben). His little speech was prepared, but it was classy. I loved that he spoke about the role as “a character actor’s dream”. Sometimes I wonder if Americans ever make good character actors. Everyone wants to be the lead.

* It was great to see Michael J. Fox. He looks healthy. I wondered if he would show up, and it’s great to see him. I was surprised that he did not get a standing ovation.

* Dude, “Mother Lover” lost! Poor Justin Timberlake. Even I think “Mother Lover” was far superior to whatever the hell that Hugh Jackman Oscar thing was.

* Sarah McLaughlin singing “We Will Remember You” over the “In Memoriam” section. At first I was like “WTF?” But it worked. Better than Queen Latifah at the Oscars.

*MAD MEN!!! So happy they won. I’m sad that Jon Hamm, Elizabeth Moss and John Slattery didn’t pick up acting awards, but I’m glad the show picked up Best Drama and Best Writing. And Mad Men’s creator, Matt Weiner had one of the best lines of the night: “When you get something like this, it makes writing look fun, and it’s not.”

Tina Fey wins an Emmy for her Sarah Palin parody

wenn2570329
Tina Fey was the easy favorite for the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Emmy, and she ended up taking home the award Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmys. The Creative Arts Emmys are the award show for most of the “behind-the-scenes” people, like Make-up, Costuming, Editing, that sort of thing. But they always announce the Guest Star winners at the show, even though most of the big names don’t even bother showing up to support “the little people”. Not Tina Fey, though. Tina showed up to support Team 30 Rock, and for what ended up being her Emmy win for guest starring on Saturday Night Live as Gov. Sarah Palin. Tina looked cute at the show, too. She wore a simple single-breasted black suit (with unfortunate shoulder pads) and a low-cut pale grey blouse.

Tina was up against: Jennifer Aniston (30 Rock), Elaine Stritch (30 Rock), Gena Rowlands (Monk), Betty White (My Name Is Earl), and Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory). It’s funny that she was up against two women she probably had a big part in casting (Aniston and Stritch). In her acceptance speech, Fey thanked former governor Palin, saying “Mrs. Palin is an inspiration to working mothers everywhere because she bailed on her job right before Fourth of July weekend. You are living my dream. Thank you, Mrs. Palin.” The Huffington Post has more from the Creative Arts show:

Is Tina Fey an Emmy winner? You betcha. Fey received an Emmy Award on Saturday for her impersonation of Republican vice presidential contender Sarah Palin on “Saturday Night Live.”

Accepting her trophy for best guest actress in a comedy, Fey thanked “SNL” producer Lorne Michaels and her parents, “who are lifelong Republicans, for their patience.”

She was honored at the Creative Arts Primetime Emmys, which recognize technical and other achievements for the 2008-09 season and preceded next weekend’s main ceremony. Fey has the chance for more awards: She could repeat last year’s win as best actress in a comedy series for “30 Rock,” and the show also could again claim top comedy honors.

Justin Timberlake was another “SNL” winner Saturday, honored as best guest actor in a comedy series.

On the drama side, Michael J. Fox won the guest actor award for his turn on “Rescue Me,” and Ellen Burstyn was honored as best guest actress for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

“I always wanted one of these,” Burstyn said, winning her first Emmy after being nominated five times. Neither Timberlake nor Fox were on hand to accept.

Kathy Griffin was host of the nearly four-hour ceremony, her trademark outrageous humor intact with risque jokes and filmed bits.

An edited, shorter version of the ceremony will air Friday on E! at 1 p.m. EDT.

The top network winner was HBO with 16 trophies, followed by NBC with 11. Fox and ABC each won eight awards, with CBS, PBS and Cartoon Network each claiming six.

PBS’ “Little Dorrit,” an adaptation of the Dickens novel, was the most-honored program with four awards. Several shows, including the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and “American Idol,” received three creative arts trophies.

Next Sunday’s Emmy ceremony, with Neil Patrick Harris as host, will air on CBS.

[From the Huffington Post]

Oh, that’s nice about Ellen Burstyn. I remember that L&O: SVU episode she guest-starred in, it was devastating. Burstyn played Det. Eliot Stabler’s bipolar mother, who has never acknowledged her own mental illness. Burstyn has an Oscar and a Tony, so now she’s part of that elite club of people who have won the top awards in three acting forms – film, television and stage. There really are only a few people who have all three awards - there’s like Joel Grey, Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Mel Brooks and a few others. And now Ellen Burstyn, who totally belongs in that club, bless her heart. The big Emmy show comes on next Sunday!

Daytime Emmys: Rachel Ray, The View & Tyra Banks win big

wenn2556484
The Daytime Emmy Awards were held last night, and Ellen DeGeneres is no longer the Hollywood elite’s darling. Ellen lost to Rachel Ray for best “entertainment” talk show, and the ladies of The View won for best hostesses, ending Ellen’s four-year reign as undisputed champion. The ladies of The View missed out on their winning moment though – none of them showed up for the show. I guess they assumed they would lose, and although I could say something nasty about why they should have lost, all I can think about is how much it would suck to actually win something and you haven’t even shown up. Meanwhile, other winners included: Tyra Banks (for “informative” talk show), The Bold and The Beautiful (best drama), Christian LeBlanc (for his lead role in The Young and the Restless) and Susan Haskell (for her lead role in One Life To Live). Here’s more from Rachel Ray’s win:

Rachel Ray has taken the crown traditionally worn by Ellen DeGeneres: the TV chef won the Emmy for best talk show, an honor that for the three previous years has gone to DeGeneres.

“I’m just thankful to have a job in the recession and be working,” Ray said after her win at Sunday’s 36th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, held at downtown Los Angeles’s historic Orpheum Theater and aired on the CW network.

On the red carpet before her victory, Ray told PEOPLE that she lacked an acceptance speech. “You know, I’m so bad at memorization and our show is completely unscripted, so I’m just going to go up,” she said, “and if something nice happens like that then we’ll just go with our gut.”

“I love daytime television,” informative talk-show category winner Tyra Banks said at the podium. “I learned the birds and the bees from watching [General Hospital's] Luke and Laura. I learned my ABCs, 1-2-3 from Sesame Street. This [Emmy] is for the women out there that do not feel beautiful … that do not have time to do their makeup … This is for you guys.”

Backstage, Banks said, “I was a little fearful, honestly, that we wouldn’t necessarily win this year because last year was so huge – ‘Kiss My Fat Ass!’ was heard around the world.”

The View’s Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd were named best talk-show hosts, over such formidable competition as Ray, DeGeneres and Live! stars Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa.

Other winners included Who Wants to be a Millionaire emcee Meredith Vieira, for best game-show host, and the often-overlooked The Bold and the Beautiful, for best daytime drama.

While Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams hosted the show (and stopped it with an opening musical number), the best line of the night came from a familiar, if not very attractive, face. After a lifetime achievement award was presented to Sesame Street, which will soon turn 40, Cookie Monster said: “It’s not only a great honor, but it’s delicious … Wow, that tastes even better than a Latin Grammy.”

[From People]

How in the world is it possible for Rachel Ray to have this kind of fan base? I know I’m not the only one who wants to scream at the sound of her voice. But apparently people love her. Her and Tyra Banks. I just don’t get it. As for Ellen, her show did end up picking up four Emmys, just not in any of the big categories. Ellen had been predicted to sweep – so is this a harbinger for the primetime Emmy Awards, coming on September 20th? I hope so. Even though I love 30 Rock, it would be cool to see some new shows take home big prizes.

Shown at the daytime Emmy Awards are Ellen and Portia, Jennie Garth, Tyra Banks, and Thorsten Kaye with Susan Haskell. Credit: WENN.com. Rachel Ray is shown at a different event on 6/3/09

Katherine Heigl up for an Emmy – for real this time (spoilers for last Greys)

greysfinale
Katherine Heigl, who made a lot of people very pissed of last year by pulling her name from the list of Emmy nominees after deeming the “material” on Grey’s Anatomy not award-worthy, is up for another Emmy. This time the nomination comes after her character may or may not have died after undergoing surgery for a brain tumor.

Ladies and gentlemen, Katherine Heigl has just declared game on!

After a firestorm of controversy erupted around her decision to remove herself from Emmy consideration last go-’round, the Grey’s Anatomy heroine has reentered the gold derby this year, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Natch, cynics will snark that the 2007 Best Supporting Actress winner is back in the race because of the tensions that allegedly sprung up between her and series creator Shonda Rhimes after she took herself out of the running. (The movie starlet, you’ll recall, said at the time that she didn’t have material with which she could compete.) But I think — and I think you’ll agree — it’s likelier that even she knows that, whether viewers loved or loathed the Izzie’s-got-a-brain-tumor story, she played the frak out of it. She’s already earned one high profile endorsement…

“I think she did beautiful work,” Rhimes raved Thursday immediately following the season finale. “I think she always does beautiful work.”

[from Entertainment Weekly]

Katherine Heigl just keeps burning bridges. She was poised to be the next big thing with movies like Knocked Up and 27 Dresses, but she is generally regarded as a diva and no one wants to work with an entitled co-star. She’s now starring with Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth, but I can’t see her getting much farther in her career with thatr attitude.

Congrats to her on the Emmy nod, but no one is going to be able to talk about this without bringing up her de-nomination last year. What do you think? Does she deserve an Emmy nomination? Or does she deserve to get snubbed?

Tina Fey’s toddler thought Sarah Palin was her mom

Tina Fey and her awesome show 30 Rock scored some major Emmy victories last night. They took home seven awards including best comedy, best actor and actress for Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey. She also won a best writer award.

Family seemed to be on her mind a lot during the evening, as she thanked her parents but gave them a most unusual (and self-deprecating) compliment.

“I thank my parents for somehow raising me to have confidence that is disproportionate with my looks and abilities. Well done. That is what all parents should do,” said Fey, who also won for best actress and writing in a comedy series.

[From Yahoo News]

There’s a similar theme surrounding Fey’s character on 30 ROCK, who often seems hard to distinguish form Fey herself. Although she’s obviously being funny, that’s one of those jokes you can tell has a lot of truth behind it, especially because it’s a reoccurring theme. Nonetheless, it’s also a funny way of thanking her parents for always making her feel good about herself and feel like she had self-worth, so I bet she makes sure to be that kind of parent.

There were also a lot of questions about Tina’s Sarah Palin impersonation, which got rave reviews and became the number one most watched viral video on NBC.com. Fey said Palin is not a character she plans on playing again, and she was initially hesitant to even acknowledge the uncanny resemblance. However she gave in when her daughter was watching Palin on TV and thought she was Fey.

As it turns out, Fey would rather not see Palin become a regular character on “SNL.”

“I want to be done playing this lady November 5th,” Fey said when asked backstage about how she feels about the election. “So, if anyone can help me be done playing her on November 5th…”

Fey added that Palin “seems like a perfectly nice lady,” but that she had been reluctant at first to admit that they look alike.

“I was very resistant to acknowledge that there was a resemblance,” Fey said. “Then my kid saw Sarah Palin on TV and said ‘That’s Mommy.’”

Finally, Fey asked enlisted reporters’ help in finding her purse, which disappeared after she left it under her seat in L.A.’s Nokia theater. “If anyone sees a small purple purse with an iPhone in it with a picture of a naked toddler,” she said.

[From Reuters]

I really have a special love for Tina Fey. That came out wrong. But I think I do have a girl crush on her. There’s this great line in 30 Rock when her character Liz Lemmon meets her idol, who’s also a television writer, played by Carrie Fisher. She greets her by saying, “You are my heroine. And by heroine I mean lady hero; I don’t want to inject you and listen to jazz.” I’m pretty sure that line right there won her at least 2 Emmys. And made her my heroine. Though if I were ever to inject anything, it’d totally be Tina Fey.

“30 Rock” & “Mad Men” lead Emmy nominations

Two of the five best shows on television (in my prestigious opinion) have snagged an incredibly high number of Emmy nominations. NBC’S 30 Rock and AMC’s Mad Men garnered 17 and 16 nominations, respectively. 30 Rock was no surprise – it’s one of only a handful of sitcoms left on the air – and one of less than a dozen that aren’t of the ABC/Disney Channel “family friendly” bland variety. The writing is consistently solid, and the jokes are starting to filter into the lexicon. I love 30 Rock so much I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant.

Tina Fey’s 30 Rock is among the leaders at the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, earning 17 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress (Fey) and Outstanding Lead Actor (Alec Baldwin).

AMC’s buzzed-about drama Mad Men nabbed 16 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, while ABC newcomer Pushing Daisies earned 12 nominations. The HBO historical drama John Adams earned the most nominations (23).

Despite the hubbub made Katherine Heigl’s decision to withdraw her nomination, Grey’s Anatomy received just five nods (it is not up for Outstanding Drama Series). Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson each received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series.

Desperate Housewives took home four nominations. Meanwhile, American Idol will face off against Project Runway, The Amazing Race, Top Chef and Dancing With The Stars for Outstanding Reality-competition Program.

[From Us Weekly]

The Emmys will air on September 21st. The relative snub towards Grey’s Anatomy is no surprise. Though I thought it was really ungracious of Katherine Heigl to say the things she said about the writers when she withdrew her name from the Emmy list, she was right. The show was horrible last season. It was pretty much unwatchable. And it wasn’t just due to the WGA strike. Anytime a show starts the season off with some lame storyline involving Heigl’s character trying to save a wounded deer – and ranting on in some unnatural, clichéd speech about why it’s important – it reeks of desperation and a complete lack of ideas.

Mad Men however, has got to be the absolute best drama on television (again in my less than humble opinion). I am constantly telling Celebitchy that she needs to stop taking care of her young child and family and prioritize by watching it. It’s a shame that it’s only on as a summer show. It’s nice to have something great to watch when the only new material is a bunch of reality crap, but the downside is that each season is only 13 episodes long. I’ve never been a fan of a single show put out by a cable network, but Mad Men is absolutely phenomenal. And needs better ratings. So this is essentially my plug to give it a shot so I don’t have to come up with something else to do on my Sunday nights.

Here’s a complete list of the 2008 Emmy nominees.

Britney Spears could get an Emmy nomination

An honest-to-God Emmy might find it’s way to Spears’ cheesy little paws.

For her double-shot guest appearance as Abby on CBS hit How I Met Your Mother, Brit-Brit is one of 41 actresses on the official ballot released by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to its voters.

[OK! Magazine]

Come September we will know for sure whether or not a Britney Spears’ Emmy nomination will become a reality. She has a rather sizable line up when it comes to the competition bucking for the award. Alyssa Milano is up for her “My Name is Earl” stint. I love the show and Alyssa is seasoned. I mean when you have Tony Danza as your stage father, how can you go wrong?

The always funny Sarah Silverman is also a force to be reckoned with. Her one episode appearance on “Monk” is on the ballot. Mary-Kate Olsen was on “Weeds” and secured a spot in the running for an Emmy as well. Meanwhile, a contender for last year’s Emmy race has pulled her name. Katherine Heigl refuses to submit her work on “Grey’s Anatomy” for a nomination. Why? Because she feels she didn’t “earn” it thanks to the “material this season.”

How bitchy is Izzy being!? Sure the show has gone downhill, but come on snotty.

Britney Spears is shown shopping at Lisa Klein on 6/10/08, thanks to WENN.

Emmy Awards: Worst Dressed

There were some doozies last night at the Emmys, with Ellen Pompeo taking the crown for worst hair and makeup in a poofy updo with 60s eye makeup and pale lips. Her dress wasn’t that bad, but the gold braided accessories just added to her dated, goofy look. Hayden Panetteire of Heroes wore a peach Marc Bouwer dress made of yards of fabric. She could have smuggled a sibling into the event under that dress. The top featured a brassiere with swirled design accented by a giant broach. An apt commentor on Just Jared said it was “a bad pregnant prom dress.”

Jennifer Morrison of House tried too hard in a silver one-shoulder flapper dress slit to the upper thigh that had too many pieces accented by thick lines and somehow managed to make the slender actress look like she had a tummy. It was pretty from the waist up, but it was too complicated overall. She almost didn’t make this list, as it’s not a terrible dress. Update: After seeing more pictures of Morrison’s dress, she definitely wasn’t one of the worst dressed and doesn’t deserve to be on this list. It only looked poorly cut from certain angles.

America Fererra, Eva Longoria, and Mary Louise-Parker all made Yahoos! best dressed top ten, but I thought their dresses were unflattering. Ferrerra usually looks gorgeous, but her Monique Lhuillier dress wasn’t cut well for her figure and I don’t like the weird spangly belt. Eva Longoria looked arrogant without reason as usual in a beaded Kaufman Franco that made her boobs look like tennis balls. She paired the silver dress with weird plain tan flats heels that look suited to a day at a country club, not an awards show. Mary Louise-Parker wore a red strapless gown that was decent, but the piece at the bottom flared out oddly and it was too tight all over.

Poor newly single Jenna Fischer of The Office looked ridiculous in a gray dress with gold leaves all over it and a big ‘ol bow underneath a strange gold braided belt. Just Jared quotes her as saying “I had to wear something that wouldn’t hurt my back,” as if trying to excuse her awful choice.

Mark Wahlberg’s wife, Rhea Durham, wore a peach cap-sleeve dress with a beaded top in a nipple-look starburst pattern and long skirt. I’ve seen it before, I’m trying to remember on whom, in another color. (On Mischa Barton at the Dead Man’s Chest Pirate’s premiere, thanks Katie for the tip.) It wasn’t as unattractive in the other color from what I remember.

Edie Falco’s dress was too tight but would have been passable if it wasn’t for all the black and white beaded flowers scattered on it. The random pattern of the beading makes them look like mistakes that you want to pick off, as if she was hit by a wind filled with sticky little daisies.

Emmy Awards: Best Dressed

Last night’s Emmy awards were full of lovely gowns, with some notable hits and misses. We’ll have a “Worst Dressed” post coming up soon, and it was considerably easier to find ugly dresses at the event than it was to find ones that were spot on. The most beautiful gowns were just slightly risky with a touch of old Hollywood glamour. Simple shapes and bright colors were featured.

Thanks to JustJared for help with some of the dress designers. Yahoo! also has their top ten best and worst dressed last night, but I only agree with some of their choices.

Best Dressed: Heidi Klum in Dior by John Galliano, Portia DiRossi in Azzaro, Carrie Ann Inaba, a judge on Dancing with the Stars, in a lovely white satin and chiffon dress, and Kristen Bell of Veronica Mars in a beautiful blue strapless gown.

Beautiful runners up: Ali Larter of Heroes in red strapless Reem Acra, Kate Walsh of Grey’s in red satin, Teri Hatcher in Badgley Mischka, Minnie Driver in a canary v-neck dress with criss-cross front, Jennifer Love Hewitt in a strapless black dress with a gauzy skirt and subtle beading on the bodice.
