Taylor Swift in black Elie Saab & more BRIT Awards photos: lovely or unflattering?

Here are some assorted photos from last night’s BRIT Awards. I hope you’re not expecting me to cover some of the lesser known people! I just selected these photos based on my personal name-recognition of these celebrities, and by how awful or good the fashion was. There were a bunch of people there who I think are only famous in England and nowhere else. You can read the list of winners here. Let’s begin with Taylor Swift in this Elie Saab gown. I like the idea of it… showing off her legs through some well-placed sheer panels, etc. But the fit is really off on the bodice and bust of this dress. Like, her bolt-ons are struggling to fill up the extra fabric.

Gemma Arterton in Jonathan Saunders. She’s beautiful but I don’t understand the concept of a sequined cardigan and matching sequined skirt. Like she’s a secretary at a disco. OMG, look at it from behind!!!

ONE DIRECTION. OMG.

Justin Timberlake’s Suit & Tie looks especially nice. This is the best suit he’s worn in a while.

Jessie J in Versace. I like Jessie J and I think she has a killer voice. Her fashion leaves me cold. I just wish the V of this gown was pulled tighter – I feel like her tatas probably came out several times.

Berenice Mahlone in Donna Karan. Berenice is HOT. Like, really hot and sexy and sultry. She dresses like a bombshell most of the time too. It will be interesting to see if she can parlay that “sultry” quality into more work.

Rita Ora in Ulyana Sergeenko. Ugh. I just don’t “get” Rita Ora. She just seems like a really budget Rihanna (even in how she looks and styles herself).

I think I finally figured out Paloma Faith – she is what happened when Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey had a love child, and then they gave that love child lip injections and a horrible perm.

Speaking of Lana Del Rey, here she is in Chanel. She looks less duck-lippy than usual. Perhaps she donated some of her injections to Paloma?

Julianne Moore in one of Elizabeth Taylor’s most famous necklaces: lovely?

Ah, jewelry p0rn. Where have you been all my life? Last night, BVLGARI hosted a “celebration of Elizabeth Taylor’s collection of BVLGARI jewelry” and many stars came out to party. Only a choice few got to actually wear some of Elizabeth’s famous jewels though, so I’m including some close-up beauty shots of some of my favorite pieces. I should note something else too – while Elizabeth Taylor had some beautiful pieces from Bulgari, she had a beautiful and varied collection of pieces from many jewelry designers and some exquisite vintage and historical pieces too. I think it’s bizarre for Bulgari to basically claim ownership of Elizabeth’s jewel-encrusted memory. Still, I never say no to jewelry p0rn.

The best of the evening was probably Julianne Moore in Alexander McQueen. The dress is meh, but Julianne got to wear Elizabeth’s exquisite emerald necklace, purchased by Richard Burton in the first years of their romance. God, isn’t it beautiful?!

Here’s Naomi Watts in a terrific black Roland Mouret dress with what I believe is one of Elizabeth’s vintage/historical pieces.

Drew Barrymore in Max Mara, with a multi-colored gem necklace. Love it!

I guess Kate Walsh is showing off a ring, earrings and a bracelet. I’m enchanted by that huge cocktail ring on her right hand.

And here’s Kiki Dunst, who is one of the faces of Bulgari (that’s why she’s there, I guess), but I don’t think she’s wearing any of Elizabeth’s jewels…?

Anne Hathaway in Gucci at the Costume Designers Guild Awards: cute or fug?

Here are some photos from the 15th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton last night. The Costume Designers Guild got some good people to come out, but I swear, I think the Hair Guild and the Makeup Artists Guild might have been on strike last night. There were some cute outfits, but the styling was terrible in many cases. Anne Hathaway was one of the big “gets” at the event – maybe because she’s literally appeared at EVERY awards show this year – and she looked cute. Her sparkly dress is Gucci, and she’s giving me hope that she’ll be styled kind of mod/1960s for the Oscars. Her eye makeup is the one thing I hate – much too heavy.

Amy Poehler and her new breakup bangs (UGH) in Prada. Ever since Gwyneth Paltrow wore that amazing Tom Ford Super-GOOP cape, designers have been doing more capes and caplets. Although I love her, this cape isn’t flattering – it makes her look slumped and hunchbacked. And the satin just looks… bad.

I didn’t even recognize Cat Deeley now that she’s super-blonde. She looks good but I wish women would stop flat-ironing their hair. It’s such a dated look. Her dress is Monique Lhuillier.

Ginnifer Goodwin in Misha Nonoo – it looks like de la Renta, right? Except this dress fits better than most de la Renta gowns these days. I think this might be my favorite dress of the event.

Joel McHale was the host of the event. This photo is just for CB.

Kristen Wiig in… an unknown designer. I think this is a really cute look for her, I just would have changed her hair. Maybe a chignon.

Lily Collins in Paule Ka. Terrible. Just terrible. The worst look of the night.

Selena Gomez wears a black Atelier Versace suit in Germany: sexy and/or great?

Selena Gomez Vanessa Hudgens

Here are some photos of the German premiere of Spring Breakers, which is getting quite the fancy, worldwide rollout for a bikini exploitation flick. Just the mere sight of Harmony Korine is enough to make my skin crawl, so we won’t talk about him any more except to say that his wife, Rachel Korine (who also stars as one of the fab four bikini chicks) is suspiciously missing from this red carpet lineup. Oh wait, she’s out sick, so I guess there’s no real conspiracy there.

Likewise, James Franco was not present for this premiere either because he’s still promoting bigger and better (i.e., more expensive) things (Oz the Great and Powerful) instead of his gross turn as K-Fed squared, so we’ll just have to make do with Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Benson. Altogether, the three ladies look better and less prom-y than for the French premiere, so let’s do some fashion.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez went very mature while sporing a black Atelier Versace with a plunging neckline that reached almost all the way to her belly button and easily revealed she was most definitely not wearing anything underneath that blazer. This is a very hopeful-grown-up look for Selena, and I’m not crazy about all the gold and the weird plunging backline as well. All the same, she’s not really showing any controversial section of her body, and her boobs aren’t flopping out for all the world to see. So this look isn’t that bad although yesterday’s flirty Gucci dress was more enjoyable. I would have gone for more dramatic makup (or at least a pop of lip color) with this suit for sure.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens looked better than she did in Paris. She wore a very colorfully floral Naeem Khan dress that was covered in sequins, and the colors provided a very lovely contrast against her skin and dark hair with very effective makeup and understated hair. She looks cute and a little bit mature, but she’s obviously having a lot of fun in this dress. Those earrings are way too much though.

Vanessa Hudgens

Ashley Benson

Ashley Benson looked — sorry to say this — like a decorative addition to a Vegas casino party. This gold monstrosity did her no favors at all. Such a poor choice for a premiere dress, but hey, this is Spring Breakers we’re talking about, so maybe Ashley wins for most appropriate attire.

Duchess Kate shows off her bump in a MaxMara wrap dress: pretty?

As promised, here is Duchess Kate in London today, making an appearance at Hope House, a residential facility which works with Action on Addiction (one of Kate’s few patronages). This is Kate’s third public appearance since announcing her pregnancy early in her first trimester. The first two appearances were an award presentation for the Sports Personality of the Year, and then she made an appearance at the unveiling of her first portrait. So… no charity work in MONTHS. And her next appearance won’t be until March 5, so we have to savor what few appearances she deigns to make.

For today’s appearance, Kate wore a Max Mara wrap dress, which is fine. It’s not super-pretty or anything or groundbreaking maternity-wear. It looks a lot like the silk jersey Issa dresses Kate loved when she was waiting for William to propose. The only change? Kate seems to be more self-conscious of her larger pregnancy boobs, because she actually seems to be wearing some kind of tank underneath the dress. As for her bump… Kate is apparently about four and half months along. I think she seems to be carrying small, but I’m very pleased to see her “flaunting” her bump. The habit among royal women is to “hide” the bump under baggy clothes, so I was hoping that Kate would show everything off. Here’s some stuff from The Mail (they sound shade-throwing to me):

The Duchess of Cambridge looked the picture of health this morning as she attended an official engagement in the London borough of Clapham this morning.

Appearing in public for the first time since her Mustique holiday last week, the Duchess, who sported a light tan, had dressed her blossoming bump in a flattering black and white wrap dress.

The Duchess, who was reported to be dismayed after photos of her on the beach in a bikini were publised in an Australian magazine earlier this month, looked happy and relaxed as she chatted to staff at Hope House, a residential centre set up to help recovering addicts.

At four and a half months pregnant, she is still remarkably slender apart from her tiny bump – clearly Kate hasn’t been eating for two.

Kate spent the morning meeting clients and staff at Hope House, a 23-bed residential treatment centre in South West London that offers an Action on Addiction programme, providing a safe, comfortable place for women to recover from substance dependence and receive support for other compulsive disorders.

[From The Mail]

Usually, The Mail is firmly ensconced within Duchess Kate’s duchess-y bum, so the “clearly Kate hasn’t been eating for two” aside feels particularly harsh. I don’t know… I guess I have to defend her. I think she looks small, for sure, but she looks healthy enough to me. As a matter of fact, I think she looks like she hasn’t barfed in a while, so please don’t even bring up the whole morning sickness thing.

Also: HER HAIR!!! You know what? I think her hair has gotten thicker with her pregnancy hormones and she’s decided to go without her crazy duchess weave. And NO SAUSAGE CURLS!!!!!! Amazing.

Selena Gomez wears Gucci in Paris for ‘Spring Breakers’: cute or too grown up?

Selena Gomez Vanessa Hudgens

Here are some photos from the Paris premiere of Spring Breakers. Unfortunately, the insufferable James Franco was not present to show off his mad skills of deep-throating pistols because James is promoting Oz the Great and Powerful at the moment. But the girls — Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine — were on the scene and fully decked out to impress (unlike the movie, probably). Selena recently told MTV that she didn’t mind wearing a bikini throughout her role: “It was so funny. The rest of the girls were in the trailer doing crunches. I didn’t mind. I didn’t care.” She really wants this to be her breakout role, but Vanessa Hudgens has been trying to do the same thing ever since High School Musical 3 came out in 2008. We’ll see how it goes. I don’t think that Harmony Korine does Disney is going to be as successful in obliterating good girl images as Vanessa and especially Selena would hope, but let’s talk about fashion.

Selena Gomez

Selena went with a spangly blue Gucci dress that she paired with Jimmy Choo heels. The look is slightly more grown-up than we’re used to seeing Selena appearing, but the amount of skin shown is quite deceptive. Selena’s highlighting her long, lean legs and flashing a little bit of side boob, which isn’t so bad. I actually like this dress on her. Selena’s 20 years old now, so I guess coddling her (stylewise) is getting a bit old as at this point. She’s got a baby face, but maybe that will eventually disappear.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

Vanessa went with a full-on ball gown in this Rafael Cennamo dress. Why so formal? This is a movie where she shows off her cute butt in a bikini for most of her screen time. I’m thinking that Vanessa’s booty is probably the highlight of all of Spring Breakers, but that doesn’t mean this Harmony Korine exploitation flick will do anything for her career. She should have taken it down a notch and gone with a cocktail dress.

Rihanna debuts new clothing line: high fashion or not as trashy as expected?

Rihanna

Here are some photos of Rihanna in London immediately prior to the Saturday debut of her fashion line for River Island at Fashion Week. She’s wearing a hat that says “high fashion advisory” and is wearing one of Chris Brown’s jackets (which is covered with tacky-looking hearts) because who the hell knows. Maybe they didn’t break up after all, or maybe they broke up and got back together, or maybe she’s just unhealthily addicted to a majorly violent douche. Or all three of the above.

Rihanna

After the show, Rihanna hit the clubs (of course), and she was reportedly assaulted” by “a crazed fan who, ironically, yelled at her for getting back with Chris Brown. The fan reportedly threw a bottle of Lucozade in RiRi’s direction, and she (trying to duck, I guess) fell against a metal grating and scraped her knee. Hollywood Life has spoken to a Breezy insider who says Chris was very concerned about the incident and also adds, “It’s f–ked up someone would do that to Rihanna, and mention Chris in the same sentence. He’s hurt over stuff like that.” Yeah, Chris is upset about Rihanna when someone else hurts her. When he hurts her, we’re supposed to just forget about it.

Here’s a bit of fashion-related oddness related to Rihanna’s fashion show. The Fashion director of Elle, Anne-Marie Curtis, has delivered her unexpected verdict of Rihanna’s clothing line. High fashion, really?

Rihanna

“My perception of her style was squarely rooted in the raunchy stage wear and street style that are synonymous with her image, (but) aside from a nod to street style in the denim section, the collection is an ode to all things high fashion.

“Think Eighties Norma Kamali meets Alexander Wang luxe sportswear. From fluid jersey dresses to sweatshirts to all-in-ones and varying length skirts almost exclusively in a navy, black and white palette, there are myriad options here for even the most discerning fashion eye. Stand-out items include a black jersey column evening dress, a brilliantly cut bra top, a navy cropped sweatshirt, and a properly fabulous denim jumpsuit.”

[From Elle UK]

I’m including some photos from Rihanna’s runway show so that you can make up your own minds on this pressing issue, but honestly, I think the overriding expectations for the Rihanna clothing line were that the outfits would be completely obnoxious with pot leaves and butt flashes everywhere. Instead, we’re getting some stuff that Rihanna would probably wear while doing late-night talk show interviews. So the natural reaction is probably a positive one merely because Rihanna hasn’t plastered her favorite term, “Thug Life” all over the fabric of every outfit. Overall, this clothing line is not completely tasteless stuff, but it’s definitely not something that the everyday person would feel comfortable wearing while walking down the street. And it’s definitely not high fashion.

Jessica Chastain in pale, lumpy Dior at the WGA Awards: pretty or ridiculous?

Here are some photos from the Writers Guild Awards, which were held last night in NYC and LA. Winners included Mark Boal’s original screenplay for Zero Dark Thirty, with the Argo script winning adapted screenplay. The TV winners included Lena Dunham, Louis CK, and scripts for episodes of Mad Men and Modern Family (which are two of the arguably best-written shows on television today). Shall we talk about fashion? Let’s talk about fashion. Jessica Chastain was there to celebrate Mark Boal, and she wore this Christian Dior dress which… I don’t like. What is Jessica’s issue with tailoring?! This bustier thing looks flat-out LUMPY. And it’s the wrong color for a pale ginger too.

Here’s some Walton Goggins, just for Bedhead (and no one else!).

Nathan Fillion, because bitches be all up on some Fillion.

I love Mindy Kaling. I LOVE The Mindy Project, which… if you haven’t watched it and you’re one of these people throwing fits about Girls and Lena Dunham, you really should watch The Mindy Project. Mindy is hilarious, it’s an exceptionally well-written romance-comedy show, and it has a great supporting cast. So, even though I love Mindy, I just CANNOT START with this outfit. The dress looks cheap and the booties are terrible.

Bad news, y’all. Amy Poehler got breakup bangs. NOOOOOoooooo.

And here’s Lena Dunham in Reed Krakoff. Can I just say? I think this is the cutest she’s looked all awards season. No joke.

Nicole Kidman in turtlenecked L’Wren Scott in London: unflattering or great?

These are some photos from last night’s London screening of Nicole Kidman’s new movie, Stoker. I previewed the film last year when the first trailer came out – Nicole seems to be doing a character role as “the unstable mother” in a creepy horror/suspense film starring Mia Wasikowska in the lead role (Mia plays Nicole’s daughter). Matthew Goode is also in the film, and all three actors showed up for the first screening, which is evidence that they’re all proud of the film I think. Here’s the latest trailer… God, this looks so creepy.

First, let’s talk about Nicole. She wore L’Wren Scott, one of her favorite designers (and mine), and I kind of hate it. No, that’s a strong word. I don’t hate it. I just don’t like it on Nicole. The gold turtleneck part is weird/confusing. And I’m not sure about the shade of blue. But, like all L’Wren pieces, at least the tailoring is stellar, right?

Meanwhile, we need to have a conversation about Mia. We rarely talk about her because really I don’t have much to say other than… she’s incredibly talented and she doesn’t seem to do anything scandalous or gossip-worthy. She’s not campaigning for anything, she’s not partying like crazy, she’s not boning every costar (that we know of). She keeps her nose clean and she’s adorable and talented. But… BANGS. Itty-bitty bangs trauma is the worse. Believe it or not, I don’t believe “bangs trauma” is a binary state. There are stages of bangs trauma, and this movement for itty-bitty, too-high bangs is one of the WORST. For me, it’s worse than the shaggy-dog, too-long, covering-the-eyes bangs trauma. I think girls who do these bangs look like alien Spocks. Mia’s dress is Christopher Kane, by the way. It’s blah. Also: Bonus Matthew Goode! He’s so handsome, but he’s such a douche.

Emma Stone in black hexagonal-fishnet Gucci in Berlin: tragic or stunning?

I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news? Emma Stone did a film with The Wax Figure Formerly Known As Nicolas Cage. The good news? It’s an animated film called The Croods so it’s not like Emma actually had to act against Nic Cage’s hairplug situation. Still, there’s more bad news: Emma wore a really horrible dress to the Berlin Film Festival premiere. I’m taking about this black thing, which is Gucci. WHY? I mean, I get that Emma is totally a Fashion Girl nowadays and she’s all about pulling off the avant-garde looks, but the sleeves on this thing are just… BAD. And I don’t get the hexagon-printed fishnet at the neck either. What crackhead designed this thing?

More bad news… Emma’s styling at the premiere was kind of terrible too. She was shiny, her hair made her look like a Mad Men extra, and I swear there’s something different about her brow situation. Also terrible? Her premiere appearance made me like her photocall appearance in Stella McCartney even more. And you know I rarely have anything nice to say about Stella’s designs! But this yellow shift dress is kind of cute. OK, it’s not the best but Emma pulls it off.

Here’s some good news too: Nic Cage is still with his wife, Alice Kim. I thought they broke up? I guess not. But I think he did buy her some new boobs.
