Duchess Kate wears grey to preview a Lucien Freud exhibit: lovely & appropriate?

Here are some new photos of the Duchess of Cambridge in London last night. She wore a “a double-breasted, 1950s-style dress by the high street clothing label Jesire” for her first solo public appearance as a royal – I like the outfit. She looks good in grey, and I think it was suitable for the occasion and the season. While she still needs to STOP with the eyeliner, her salon-fresh hair did seem more subdued, right? It’s not so “college girl sausage curls”. Or maybe I’m just getting used to it.

Anyway, the occasion was a preview of the Lucian Freud exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. You might remember, the National Portrait Gallery is one of Kate’s five patronages (which took her more than a year to organize). The tour of Freud’s work took an hour, and I’m happy to report that Kate handled herself with grace. She didn’t mess up, she didn’t trip or scratch one of the Freuds. Incidentally, did anyone else read that fantastic article about Freud in Vanity Fair last month? Go here to read it – it’s a great piece about one of the great artists of the modern age.

Us Weekly has an article this week about how depressed Kate is now that William has left her for his Falklands military training. Here are some highlights from the piece:

William left on February 1, and “Kate misses him,” says a Kate source. “It’s difficult for any officer’s wife to have her husband away on duty.”

William’s absence comes as Kate, 30, begins an intensive round of princess boot camp. “Kate’s a working royal, and her first work will happen while William isn’t around,” says the Kate pal. “It’s the toughest time for her to be alone.”

While William is away, the Queen is advising Kate. A palace aide says, “They’ve become close. Her Majesty has done it all. There isn’t anyone who can give better advice. Her Majesty has helped Catherine learn the importance of engagements, and what’s expected of her when she starts to go out and meet the public by herself.”

“While William is away, Kate plans to do nothing but work,” says a palace source.

[From Us Weekly, print edition]

Sure. I’m sure she “plans to do nothing but work” especially considering the palace has been trying to convince us she’s actually been working “hard” this whole time. In between shopping and hair appointments, of course. And sitting around, waiting for William to come home. And I really, really hope the whole “this is the toughest thing EVER” part of these stories is just editorial BS, made up out of whole cloth, and Kate isn’t really sitting around thinking about how tough she has it.

Reese Witherspoon in Miu Miu at ‘This Means War’ premiere: unkempt or sexy?

Last night was the LA premiere of This Means War. Reese Witherspoon really, really needs this to be a hit film. Will you see it? I won’t. It just looks awful to me, but I suspect the film will do well. Anyway, Reese is really trying this sexy-bombshell image with yet another too-tight strapless dress. The cut of this Miu Miu dress reminds me of Reese’s Jessica Rabbit look at the Globes. We get it, Reese. You have boobs. Also: I hate her hair these days. She said she got bangs to cover up a forehead scar, and while I understand the idea behind it, the execution leaves something to be desired. The length of the bangs and the length of the rest of her hair, how forcibly “unkempt” it looks these days… it’s not my favorite thing.

And here’s Chelsea Handler at the premiere. Her dress is Elizabeth and James, and it’s not really that flattering on her. I don’t care for mullet dresses or horizontal stripes, though, so maybe that’s throwing me off. I love how busted Chelsea looks even when she’s TRYING.

Here’s Chris Pine. Meh. He’s boringly handsome.

And here’s Tom Hardy and his back-on girlfriend Charlotte Riley. Methinks Charlotte put the Hardy dong on lojack, you know? I would too. That man may have Alfalfa hair and a crazy-man beard, but he is FINE.

Sarah Jessica Parker at the amFAR gala: trying too hard to be Carrie Bradshaw?

More photos from last night’s amFAR gala in New York City. We’ve already covered Lindsay Lohan’s crack-monster face and all of the ladies in (busted) Roberto Cavalli. To start this post, let’s talk about how awful Sarah Jessica Parker looks and how she thinks she’s still Carrie Bradshaw. This is the kind of outfit that Carrie Bradshaw would try to pull off (and end up looking like a four-year-old on a sugar high). On SJP, it just looks dated and confused. The pink dress is Oscar de la Renta, and she paired it with an Oliver Theyskens leather jacket, which does not work. And then she did glove-lets too. Awful.

Leighton Meester in Louis Vuitton. Love the little cocktail dress – it’s great on someone so young and so pretty. The fur panels are… odd. But they kind of work, right? I’m not loving her hair, though.

Here’s Rose Byrne in Alexander McQueen. I like the dress a lot, but I dislike the way Rose is styled. It’s not even just my knee-jerk hatred of bangs – this hair style in TOTAL does awful things to a beautiful woman.

Heidi Klum makes her first post-split red carpet appearance: busted or pretty?

I suspect that Lindsay Lohan’s crack-monster-face will completely eclipse all of the other fashion moments from the amFAR gala last night in NYC. To be fair to LL, she looked like such disastrous hell, everyone wants to talk about it. But to be fair to everyone else, there were some interesting fashion moments that weren’t related to Lohan. Let’s start with Heidi Klum in Roberto Cavalli. Cavalli was very popular last night – this post is devoted to ladies in Cavalli. I like this dress okay on Heidi – it seems subdued and mature on her, which isn’t bad at all. She usually errs on the side of “drag queen” so it’s nice to see her styled in a more mature way. I don’t think the dress is super-flattering on her, but it’s a nice choice for her first red carpet since her split.

Here’s Elizabeth Hurley and her man, Shane Warne. I’ve been ignoring Shane and Liz for a while, mostly because there haven’t been new photos of them, and because they’ve been more low-key lately. Liz wore Cavalli – it’s boring on her. I also think she looks like she’s gained some weight? She’s in love with a Ken doll, and she’s happy, so good for her. Shane’s face looks more “settled in” though, right? He looks almost human.

Next up: Jennifer Hudson, also in Cavalli. I think the dress is just awful by itself, and on Jennifer, it’s not good. It does bad things to her bust. But! Her makeup looks good, and I like the big hair on her.

Here’s Cindy Crawford in Cavalli. This dress looks so cheap on her. And her face really looks crazy to me.

Also in Cavalli – Julianne Moore. Great color on her, and great styling. This is the best she’s looked in a long time, I think. My only complaint is that the dress’s tailoring seems off.

Rachel McAdams, bangsy at ‘The Vow’ premiere: the worst she’s ever looked?

I’ve always thought that Rachel McAdams was adorable. She’s super-cute, and she’s one of those girl-women that will easily be able to play young(er) characters because of her inherent “cuteness”. When she’s 40, people will still think she’s in her 20s, and she’ll always have fans because she seems so “real” and like the cool girl who could be your neighbor. So it pains me to say this – Rachel McAdams doesn’t know her own strengths, and she just torpedoed herself by styling herself like a 50-something Real Housewife. With that adorable, dimply face, with that great bone structure and that girl-next-door sex appeal, WHY in God’s name did Rachel do this to her hair? It’s not just the too-thick, too-long BANGS TRAUMA (full-on), it’s also the cheap looking dye job, the horrible makeup, and the budget-looking Vivienne Westwood dress (that washes her out). Jesus, Rachel. Why did you do this to yourself?

So these are photos of The Vow premiere in LA last night. Maybe The Vow will be a hit movie for Rachel – even though it looks sappy and terrible, I suspect lots of women want to see it. Rachel’s career choices are weird/bad enough – but does she have to do this to her personal, celebrity image too? God, she just looks like hell. She never really “wows” me on the red carpet, but some really good stylists need to offer Rachel their services.

Meanwhile, Channing Tatum looked fine. His wife Jenna was at his side too – I didn’t care for her dress either (it looks like a reconfigured Victoria’s Secret baby doll), but at least her styling doesn’t make me want to cry and scream to the heavens.

Michelle Williams at the Oscar nominees luncheon: adorable or too precious?

Here are more photos from yesterday’s Oscar nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills. I always think this must be one of the best events during the awards season – you don’t have to wear a gown, you don’t have to pose on a red carpet, you get to eat lunch with friends and other talented people, and you pose for a big “class photo” at the end. It seems more low-key, and as such, it’s never a big fashion event. Still, it’s nice to look at the photos. First off, here’s Michelle Williams, back to her beloved pale colors and Mia Farrow-in-1973-styling. Michelle is actually wearing a Victoria Beckham dress! Eh, I still don’t like it on Michelle.

I love Glenn Close’s face, and I love her talent. I’m happy she was nominated for an Oscar this year. But dear God, that is one ugly coat.

I love this color on Melissa McCarthy.

Can we talk about how great Meryl Streep looks? She’s so beautiful. I love her hair these days, and Meryl isn’t a hair person. This look is perfection except for the panty hose-with-open-toe shoes thing.

I actually like Rooney Mara’s outfit here. The blazer is Thierry Mugler and the jumpsuit is Asos. The pants need to lose an inch or two, though.

Viola in too-bright Juan Carlos Obando. I love her in bright colors, but this is just too “look at me!” for my tastes.

Octavia Spencer looks great here. I love her hairstyle!

And here’s a little Demian Bichir, because I haven’t been paying enough attention to him. He’s fine, isn’t he?

Sharon Stone attempts low-slung leather pants: how awful does she look?

You know I think highly of Sharon Stone’s looks, right? It’s debatable as to whether she’s been tweaked or not, but whatever she’s doing, her face looks good. She’s a mature woman who looks great for her age. And normally, she’s a good casual dresser too. But this is maybe the worst she’s looked in YEARS. And it’s all about the outfit. This outfit would be fug on someone half Sharon’s age, and on her it’s just a catastrophe. What is the cut-off point for leather pants? And why would you pair low-slung leather pants with loafers and a cropped turtleneck? What’s especially disturbing is that this isn’t just some casual look Sharon threw on at the last minute – she was at a business lunch or something. Terrible.

Meanwhile, Sharon appears on the cover of this month’s AARP Magazine, and she talks in detail about her past health issues, including her brain hemorrhage and her miscarriages:

On her brain hemorrhage, the 53-year-old Stone explained, “I came out of the hospital with short- and long-term memory loss. My lower left leg was numb. I couldn’t hear out of my right ear. The side of my face was falling down. I thought, ‘I’ll never be pretty again. Who’s going to want to be around me?’”

Over the past dozen years, she also suffered two miscarriages, which led her and Bronstein to adopt Roan, now 11. “The last time I lost the baby, I went into 36 hours of labor. While we were at the hospital, our adoption attorney called. I thought, ‘This is such a godsend. This is so right.’ I always thought I would adopt. Even when I was young, I used to look up how to adopt.”

A bitter divorce from Bronstein in 2004, however, delivered another blow when Stone lost a custody battle for Roan.

But out of it came her choice to adopt her two more boys; Laird, 6, and Quinn, 5. Stone gushed, “I’m loving raising my kids. Quinn is in junior kindergarten, and he’s very exclamatory! Like a little FBI agent, he tells you everything that’s happening, so I call him Agent Quinn. ‘Mom! Toots pooped in the yard!’ ‘Thank you, Agent Quinn.’ I’ve made humanitarian causes and my children much more my priority than the Hollywood scene, being liked and getting movie parts.”

[From Extra]

I had totally forgotten that Sharon lost custody of her oldest son. That’s sad.

Oh, and Sharon just signed on for a new movie called Attachment. She plays a mother of a teenager – the mother has an affair with a college student (a boy) and the boy starts dating the daughter and then terrorizing the family. I don’t even know. It sounds like a gender-reversed version of the Alicia Silverstone movie, The Crush. I LOVE that movie.

Rooney Mara in green Louis Vuitton: lovely or underwhelming?

These are some new photos of Rooney Mara at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival over the weekend, where she won the “Virtuoso” Award for her work in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Rooney wore this lovely green Louis Vuitton dress and matching coat for the occasion. I whole-heartedly approve of this look on her, and I can finally see why she gets (too many) comparisons to Audrey Hepburn. This is the kind of look that petite, small-chested girls can really pull off beautifully – the fitted, high-necked top with the architectural, puffy skirt. Plus, Rooney finally found a color that looks beautiful on her – some people look sickly in green, but Rooney finally “pops”.

Rooney is still out and about, promoting The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo internationally – she was just in Japan last week. Part of her recent appearances could be construed as an effort towards her Oscar campaign – remember, she’s up for Best Actress along with Meryl Streep and Viola Davis. Most critics/Oscar watchers think Best Actress is just that two-woman race between Meryl and Viola, with Glenn Close, Rooney and Michelle Williams not even figuring into it that much. But if there was going to be a spoiler, would it be Rooney? Or would it be Michelle? I suspect Michelle has the better shot. I also suspect that Rooney isn’t going to have a full-blown Oscar campaign. Partly because she’s so “over” the Hollywood thing (FOR REAL, she’s so hardcore, y’all) and partly because I’m guessing the studio doesn’t want to spend the money, maybe.

Maybe I would feel differently about Rooney’s Oscar nomination if I didn’t think she was such a brat. Maybe I feel differently about her as a person if she was really wowing me with her style. But isn’t she just an underwhelming person in total? Still, I love this Louis Vuitton on her. I hope she wears a good color for the Oscars.

Scarlett Johansson in Calvin Klein in Germany: pretty, thin and tweaked?

Here are some new photos of Scarlett Johansson at the Golden Camera Awards in Germany over the weekend. She looks weird, right? Her face looks different to me, but I’m thinking it’s just a makeup change and weight loss rather than tweaking. Scarlett does look like she’s lost weight all over, although she’s being helped along by the built-in corset in this Calvin Klein dress. She looks good – well, she looks BETTER. She’s looked like hell for most of the last year, like Sean Penn sucked the pretty right out of her. It’s good to see her go back to a lighter hair color and really try to look sexy and va-va-voom.

Maybe she looks better because she has a new dude in her life? She’s allegedly been dating New York ad man Nate Naylor for the past six months… which I don’t believe. I don’t think she’s been with someone for six months and we’ve only heard about him this past week. But that’s their story, so whatever. At first I was really happy that Scarlett went for a non-celebrity guy with an actual career, but as more is written about this Naylor guy, the more suspicious I am. It seems like he’s really trying to use Scarlett to launch himself as… something. Here’s the suspicious People Mag article about him:

Scarlett Johansson has been linked to many celebrities, but her new beau Nate Naylor isn’t a household name. So who is the New York City-based advertising executive, who’s seeing the 27-year-old actress? Here’s what you need to know:

1. He has an eye for risqué art
Virgin eyes should steer clear from Naylor’s Tumblr. The blog, which he calls Up in Guts, is filled with provocative paintings and photographs of scantily clad women, skeletons, grizzly bears and more.

2. He gets high praise from friends – for his work and looks
Naylor “is the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen in person,” says fellow freelance creative director Lawson Clarke, who is known in the ad world as Male Copywriter. “He basically looks like Morrissey in his prime.” But Naylor’s not just another pretty face. “Bottom line is Nate’s a great guy and really respected in the industry,” adds Clarke, who has worked with Naylor multiple times. “Scarlett should be so lucky.”

3. Johansson isn’t the first celebrity he’s been linked to
Though it didn’t appear to be anything serious, Naylor spent time with former 3rd Rock from the Sun star Kristen Johnston. He accompanied the actress to the Atlantic Theater Company’s spring gala in 2008, where the pair was photographed together.

4. He’s worked all over the country
Naylor is an Arizona native, but he didn’t stay put in his hometown. He’s worked for various ad agencies in Amsterdam, as well as in San Diego, Boston and San Francisco. His boast-worthy list of top-tier clients over the years includes: Disney, Sega, Taco Bell, MTV, U2 and Cadillac.

5. He likes to go out on the town
Johansson and Naylor have been keeping their romance under the radar, but the pair have been spotted out and about together several times. Earlier this month, they had a night out with friends at New York City club Sway where the actress was “smiling a ton,” according to an onlooker. The couple “sat together at the booth and were talking and laughing,” added the source. Naylor and Johansson were also seen dining at Bowery Hotel restaurant Gemma over the weekend and attended the opening of Le Baron on Jan. 27.

[From People]

Nate “is the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen in person… He basically looks like Morrissey in his prime.” For the love of God. Well, we know one thing for sure: Nate Naylor hangs out with a lot of gay guys who think he’s hot. Nate also managed to get a story in Life & Style (photo below), all about how Nate is a great boyfriend because he shares his food with Scarlett.

Stacy Keibler’s leggy Las Vegas appearance: busted or cute?

Here are some new photos of Stacy Keibler in Las Vegas last night. She was hostessing “the Big Game Eve” at the Bellagio. I wonder how much she charged? She makes five-figures for red carpet appearances now that she’s “George Clooney’s girlfriend” but I’m guessing she makes low six-figures for party hostessing, especially for a big Las Vegas event. I still don’t really get why anyone would pay Stacy that kind of money just to attend an event solo. It would be one thing if her presence guaranteed George Clooney’s presence too, but he never comes to her events. Anyway, she looks pretty decent here. I like the mini-dress and leather jacket combo – her legs are so great, it’s nice to see her styled to look sexy and rock n’ roll, rather than aged and conservative, which is how she’s looked on the red carpet for all of Clooney’s awards shows.

Also, Page Six had another interesting item about Stacy and her money-making skills – apparently, she’s going to be everywhere during New York Fashion Week, and all of the big designers want her front row center during their shows:

Stacy Keibler may be coming soon to a front row near you. We hear George Clooney’s gal pal, a former pro wrestler not known as a fashion muse, is being offered $5,000-plus to wear jeans and other branded duds during Fashion Week, which begins Thursday. “She’s an all-American girl. She’s hot in the press right now,” a fashion marketer told us. Keibler recently signed with William Morris Endeavor, and sources say she’s upped her personal appearance fee to $25,000.

[From Page Six]

Fine, I’ll admit it. I’m jealous. This seems like a really sweet gig, and I would love to know how the business side of this goes down. Does Stacy have, like, dozens of offers from various companies, “Please wear these free jeans, and carry this Gucci handbag, we’ll pay you $10,000.” I wish I could get paid for wearing certain things. Hanes Her Way never calls, though.
