Diane Kruger and the ladies in yellow: a little bit of summer or too much?

Strangely enough, there was plenty of yellow to be found last night at the Critics Choice Awards. It seems like an odd choice for January, and most of it was overdone to the max. First, we have Diane Kruger in a rare red carpet miss. Diane can usually wear anything and look like Aphrodite incarnate, but this yellowish Grecian Prada gown was just terrible. Overall, the dress would’ve looked better in a solid color instead of pairing a lighter yellow with darker painter stripes along the sides of the skirt. And the blue grey tone of the rest of the dress with the built-in bra cups? Oh, Diane. Then she chose to accessorize with hot pink lipstick and a matching Prada clutch. I’m really not sure what happened here, but it’s like Diane really went out of her way to look bad. Maybe she lost a bedroom-oriented bet with Joshua Jackson? I need to believe that to justify the existence of this dress.

Also, the purposely messy hair was a bit too messy and the hot pink color makes her lips look extremely tiny. Not good.

Elizabeth Olsen (nominated for Best Actress in Martha Marcy May Marlene) faired slightly better with a short Emilio Pucci dress. Lizzie has a bit of difficulty dressing to her body type, and this dress (like many of her other choices) makes her look slightly hippy. Yet she’s showing off great legs, and the hair is just right.

And of course, once Lizzie flashed her fabulous smile, all was forgiven.

Finally, Elle Fanning (who was up for Best Young Actor/Actress in Super 8) emphasized her youth with a whimsical Rodarte dress. Elle is still so young, so she gets a pass for wearing daisies (or are those sunflowers?) on the red carpet.

Still, Elle really should’ve put her hair in a messy updo instead of letting it hang all over the place. She’s got plenty of time to learn though.

Critics Choice Fashion: Michelle Williams is gorgeous in black-and-white Chanel

As I mentioned before, I recently saw My Week With Marilyn, and I really was impressed with Michelle Williams’ performance. I’m not fighting with you about her anymore, at least not about her talent. She’s talented, and her work as Marilyn Monroe was solid-to-great. I’ll be pleased if Michelle ends up with another Oscar nomination for Best Actress. But I’ll be kind of disappointed if she wins – I don’t think she should win. It was a good enough movie overall for her to win. But I’m happy to see her at all of the awards shows.

So here’s Michelle at last night’s Critics Choice Awards, where she lost to Viola Davis (who owned it). Michelle went with Chanel, from the 2012 Resort collection. Michelle memorably wore Chanel to last year’s Oscars too, and I absolutely loved her Oscar gown. I’m not completely in love with this gown, but it’s okay. It fits her beautifully and I like that she went for monochromatic black-and-white rather than a wispy, delicate, fragile pastel or barely-there metallic.

As for her styling – meh. I’m still happy that her hair is darker, but the cut is still too short, I think. She needs to grow out those itty-bitty bangs. She can still have short hair, she should just have it, like, a shaggy Mick Jagger cut. I’d like to see her with a different lipstick color too, I think. But one word about Michelle’s skin: PERFECTION. She has beautiful skin!! It looks flawless here, and it looked flawless in My Week With Marilyn too.

Also – I’m pretty sure Busy Phillips was just there as Michelle’s date. Busy is often Michelle’s date at these events, and I think their friendship and girly date nights are super-cute.

Evan Rachel Wood in black Valentino: stunning or washed out & busted?

I’ve really grown to love Evan Rachel Wood over the past year. I think she’s right up there with Carey Mulligan and Mia Wasikowska for “the best 20-something actresses” currently. But my ERW love has limits, and this hairstyle is definitely pushing them. Evan was at the Critics Choice Awards, likely to help represent The Ides of March. Evan wore this Valentino gown which… fine, I’ll just say it. I LOVE IT. Please don’t disregard all of the bad things I’ve said about lace and crochet dresses before. Lace and crochet is almost always horrible, I swear!!!! But for some reason, I’m in love with this dress, and I adore it on Evan. I think it works because it’s mostly solid, and the “lace” part isn’t really lace, maybe? It’s, like, perforated fabric? Whatever. I love it. Go ahead and yell at me.

But, as I said, I’m not loving her hair. From certain angles, the little peaks looked like horns. And from other angles, it looked like her hair was still done up in old-timey ribbon curls. I hate to say this too – but she needs to go a shade darker. Just do a honey blonde, maybe? It would make her look so washed out. Still, the makeup is fabulous.

Would you like a closeup of the engagement ring Jamie Bell gave her? Here you go – the ring is really pretty and much larger than I was expecting. Rin Tin Tin money, wazzup?

Tilda Swinton in black and white Yves Saint Laurent: perfect or too plain?

Tilda Swinton did her did her hair and makeup earlier this week for the NBR Awards, and while she looked lovely, she’d had enough of that muss and fuss, thank you very much. So Tilda (who was nominated for Best Actress in We Need To Talk About Kevin) decided to go back to her androgynous roots for the Critics Choice Awards. As such, she donned a Yves Saint Laurent three-piecer in black and white, which has the look of a tuxedo but the flow of a typical Tilda outfit. She also chose YSL platform heels to match and accessorized with a Pomellato opal ring and very little makeup. This outfit is classic Tilda, and I love it.

Jessica Chastain (nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The Help) seriously overdid the carnation pink on the red carpet last night. This was a Balenciaga column dress that looked like a too-sweet version of an Angelina sack dress. Further, it’s waaay too pink, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing with redheads, but this is just too much, especially when coupled with a bit of a Croydon facelift hairstyle. The blue sapphire earrings seemed really “off” too. Obviously, the actress who favors busted gift wrap is in dire need of a new stylist.

Looking at Jessica’s outfit was fairly painful, so I’m relieved to move on to Berenice Bejo, a.k.a., “The Chick from The Artist,” who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress as well. She went for a flapper look with a short, beaded blue Elle Saab dress and a (mostly) matching Edie Parker clutch along with Jimmy Choo sandals. The v-neck works for her and the slightly messy hair compliments the polished makeup. Most of all, those earrings just slay me. Berenice was one of the best dressed last night, which made for a stunning awards show-oriented, red carpet debut in America. She might not win the acting awards this season, but she’s going great in the fashion race.

Kelly Osbourne versus Jennifer Lawrence: whose stylist hated her more?

The only thing that joins Kelly Osbourne and Jennifer Lawrence in my mind is that they both looked super-rough at last night’s People’s Choice Awards. I mean, I get it. It’s JUST the People’s Choice. No one is bringing their style A-game. But when making an appearance on a red carpet, I would really love it if celebrities would dress is a way where I would never have to use the phrase “wrath of God.” That’s what I thought when I saw Jennifer Lawrence – who is ordinarily a beautiful, stunning young woman. She has a great, athletic body and a gorgeous face. I have no idea why she chose to present herself this way. The Viktor & Rolf dress is… well, maybe someone will like it, but I think it’s hideous, and it looks uncomfortable. But what’s worse is Jennifer’s styling and makeup. She looks like a half-dead zombie. Much, much too dark. It’s not “sophisticated” it’s just too dark.

Meanwhile, I have no idea what Kelly Osbourne was trying to do here. I don’t think she knows either, and she doesn’t look pleased with her result. The dress is Honor – color blocking can be cute, but not with off-white and orange, and not on Kelly Osbourne. The only nice thing I can say is that I like the fit of the dress – if it was all one color, and that color was lavender or red, it would have been really interesting. But the worst part might be Kelly’s hair? I think she was aiming for violet, but in photos, it just reads as old-lady grey. The length is good – imagine this cut and style, but in a shade of honey-brown with some red highlights. Wouldn’t she look so much better like that?

Madonna at the UK premiere of ‘W.E.’: she looks better than she has in years?

I have been staring at these photos of Madonna – at the London premiere of W.E. last night – and I think I’ve finally figured out all of the pieces. The base is a spaghetti-strapped black gown. Then Madonna added this fire-engine-red fingerless gloves, as some kind of weird homage to Michael Jackson, maybe? And then on top of that, she added the Dolce & Gabbana cape – which really is a CAPE, like Madge is a Couture Super-Hero or something. The cape is the thing on her neck – that’s not a separate ribbon necklace, that’s part of the cape’s tie. So, what do you think of the outfit as a whole? If she had taken off the gloves, I think it would have been interesting. With the gloves, it just looks… odd.

That being said, this is maybe the best Madonna has looked in a while. Her arms are exposed, and I don’t feel like I’m being assaulted by gristle – which just proves that dropping Tracy Anderson as your trainer greatly improves your overall look. Her hair is a good length, and it makes her face look longer, which is good because she was looking so chipmunky and jacked lately. As for her chicken cutlet cheek implants – everything has softened and relaxed, right? Her face looks almost normal!

By the way, Madonna is going to be all over the place this year. She’s going to be at the Globes on Sunday, and who knows? Maybe even at the Oscars if W.E. is up for anything. She’s also going to be releasing a new album in March – she’s already revealed the album name – M.D.N.A.

PS… I’m including a pic of James D’Arcy, the English actor I love. He plays Edward in W.E. He’s incredibly talented and strangely beautiful in that weird English way. I heart him.

Lea Michele versus Demi Lovato: who looked worse in busted, awful Marchesa?

Lea Michele won big at last night’s People’s Choice Awards. She took home “Favorite TV Comedy Actress” which she treated like an Oscar, she was so pleased with herself. Ugh. HER FACE. I know that’s so rude and I’m going to hell in hand basket already, so just let me say that whenever I see Lea Michele’s face, my immediate thought is “SMACK.” As for her dress – well, if you didn’t immediately recognize the ice skater hideousness, it’s totally Marchesa. It looks so much like that horrible Marchesa dress that Blake Lively wore a few months ago. WHAT IS WITH THE STRINGS? Why does every Marchesa dress have to involve so much g–damn fringe?

And since we’re talking about how awful Marchesa is, let’s talk about Demi Lovato’s dress too – it was Marchesa. Pageant dress. Except that it’s like a really budget, cheap pageant dress that a contestant for Miss America wouldn’t even touch. This is dress for Miss Orange County or something. Awful. It’s not even a good color on Demi! She needs something bolder, not a pastel. Also – I’ve never noticed Demi’s booty before. She’s got a cute butt, and a really nice, curvy shape.

Emma Stone in green & black Gucci: Sgt. Pepper fug or truly adorable?

There’s so much to love about Emma Stone, I can’t even start. I love her ginger. I love her voice. I love her talent. I love how low-key she seems. And I love that she seems to love clothes, and that she’s a young woman who is still finding her style, for better or for worse. I think she has made some big style mistakes over the past year, but she when she gets it right, she looks amazing. For last night’s People’s Choice Awards, Emma was one of the few ladies in a pantsuit. This suit is Gucci, and there’s definitely something costumey and Sgt. Pepper about it, but… it kind of works, right? Only on Emma. And only because it’s a very modern silhouette. Emma won last night too – she took home “Favorite Movie Actress” AND “Favorite Comedic Movie Actress”. She beat out ladies like Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Jennifer Aniston. Watch out world – there’s a new sassy, funny, A-list redhead on the loose.

Here’s Faith Hill – she performed during the People’s Choice, although we only have photos of her on the red carpet in this pretty red dress. It looks okay from the front, but there were issues with the fit that you could see from the side. Still, she’s a beautiful woman. I like her hair color these days.

Vanessa Hudgens in Jenny Packham, who is one of Duchess Kate’s favorite designers. You would never see Waity in this dress, though. Much too sexy. I think it looks rather cheap too, but I suspect that Vanessa just does that to any dress or outfit. I don’t want to waste the energy to actively hate V-Hud, but she’s really, really desperate for attention these days. Every single day, she paps herself with her new “boyfriend” and now she’s pouring herself into gowns for the People’s Choice Awards. This was probably the highlight of her year. She needs a job.

Just yesterday, I commented about how I really liked that Julianne Hough was a mostly conservative dresser. And then she shows up in this KaufmanFranco dress with the crazy back. Yeah, this isn’t conservative. And Julianne has a CRAZY body. Does anyone else think she looks like a young (un-jacked) Meg Ryan? Like, if Meg Ryan and Christina Applegate had a baby, it would be Julianne Hough.

Ashley Greene in leather and lace DKNY: pretty or very dated?

At last night’s People’s Choice Awards we saw the leather and lace trend rear its hideous head again. Several of you actually liked the ruffled leather and lace Valentino dress that Jessica Alba wore to a Globes party and said that it would have worked with different accessories and styling. I thought the dress was ugly in and of itself, but this is obviously a fashion trend that’s trying to stick.

Here we have Ashley Greene, in leather and lace DKNY that isn’t quite as ugly as Alba’s dress yesterday. It’s a more formfitting dress, and it also has a ridiculous ruffle at the hem. The lace neckline on this dress looks very similar to the dress I wore to my junior prom in 1990. It’s dated, it’s fug, but I’ll be damned in Ashley doesn’t look hot for the early 90s. She’s bringing back a lot of memories for me. Her hair and makeup are excellent and very polished, but would it kill her to try and hide the smug a little?

Here’s “Pretty Little Liars’” Lucy Hale, who didn’t get the memo that the flash-in-the-pan mullet dress trend is over. She’s wearing Cengiz Abazoglu with Sutra earrings and a Baccarat ring. She’s so pretty and this dress is so fug it’s distracting. Look at these ridiculous platform slingbacks. “Pretty Little Liars” won for favorite cable TV drama. (I saw a few episodes of the first season, but it just got too complicated for me.)

Also from “Pretty Little Liars” is Ashley Benson in a goofy, poofy white A-line dress with a black tulle underlay. The waist is too high, the dress looks very young, and the style does nothing for her. She looks so lovely on TV and really could have shone with some more adult styling. Her hair looks too young to me too. She’s 22, there’s no excuse for this.

I’m throwing in my girl Busy Phillips because I just love to see her. She usually doesn’t rock the red carpet, but she always looks thrilled to be there. I love the cut and style of this dress but the earrings and shoes are all wrong.

Update: here’s Kristen Bell, also in leather and lace but Valentino. I was originally going to add her to this post, but then I saw that she was at the premiere of The Grey last night in this same dress and I got confused. She actually wore it to both events. This look works for me. The skirt is A-line, not ruffled, the lace is subtle and hidden under a sheer overlay, and it’s sleeveless. Her hair is a little listless, but I like how understated her makeup is. I’m probably giving her a pass because she’s so nice.

Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth: one of the sexiest couples of Young Hollywood?

Here are some photos of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth at last night’s People’s Choice Awards. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but… Miley Cyrus and Liam are one of the sexiest young couples in Young Hollywood. Like, I buy that they’re boning like bunny rabbits. And I kind of want to see it. This is not a bearding situation, and it’s not a show-mance or a fauxmance. These two actually adore each other, and they can’t keep their hands off of each other. It’s hot.

I’ve always been rather meh on Liam’s attractiveness – he seems like a lug, honestly. But ever since Liam and Miley got back together for a second go-around, and ever since Miley seems more low-key and more grown-up, I’ve liked them both so much more. I want to think he’s a good influence on her. I like to think that they just spend their days having sex and doing bong hits and watching TV. I like to think Miley is learning that her whole life doesn’t have to lived in the public sphere.

Anyway, Miley was wearing this David Koma dress, which I’m not crazy about. At least her tatas are under wraps, I guess. And the white looks pretty on her, but the weirdness in the skirt is bugging me. Also: Miley’s face looks slightly tweaked to me. But other than that, Miley and Liam make a very attractive couple. Miley is completely balls-out in love with him too – look at the way she looks at him. It’s sweet, but I hope she doesn’t get her heart broken.
