Michelle Williams in white Dior at the ‘Marilyn’ premiere: sexy, pretty or blah?

my_week_with_marylin_01_wenn3552054

Last night was the New York Film Festival premiere of My Week With Marilyn, the film that I’m not looking forward to. I mean, I’ll probably see it, but I’m not expecting Michelle Williams to blow me away as Marilyn Monroe, at all. Michelle’s dress was Christian Dior, and although I’m not crazy about a white dress on a pale-skinned blonde girl, I am thankful that Michelle wore something relatively sexy. I got tired of her style during the last awards season, when Michelle was mostly covered up in a series of vintage-y looking dresses that looked more appropriate for young girls. It’s nice to see her looking like an adult woman, and yes, this is a very Mia Farrow style from the neck up. It’s not just the haircut, either. Michelle really does look like Mia, right?

I’ve also included some photos of Michelle’s costar Eddie Redmayne, who I still think has a serial killer face. It’s something about the eyes and the too-high cheekbones – he looks “off” (to me). Jake Gyllenhaal also came out to support Michelle, but we don’t have any photos of it – you can see them together here.

Here’s the trailer again. Michelle’s Marilyn voice bugs even more the second time around.

Kim Kardashian’s 1970s-inspired all-white ensemble: tragic or cute?

fp_7982518_kardashianjenner_whiteout_aar_01_35

Before I forget, let me thank all of you for your support on that Eva Green-Ewan McGregor post. I too think they (and actors of their caliber) should be featured more and more, and I promise to continue bringing those kinds of people to you. That being said, it’s kind of hard to proclaim that we’ll never cover Kardashian news ever again. Especially not when Kim Kardashian walks the NYC streets looking like she’s about to join Mick Jagger at Studio 54. WTF? Did Evan Rachel Wood send out a memo about these dumb floppy hats?!?

fp_7982802_kardashianjenner_whiteout_aar_05_35

The Daily Mail points out that back in the 1970s, Cher wore a famous all-white ensemble with a floppy hat too. It’s especially funny because just this week, Cher might have said that the Kardashians need to be drop-kicked down a freeway. That’s what it seemed like on Cher’s Twitter, although Cher did try to backtrack and claim that she meant Bridezillas or something. The Kim K.-Cher thing is also funny because if Kim tweaks herself any more, she’s going to have Cher’s current cat-face. Sad.

Did you hear about Kim’s new purchase? She just bought herself a $325,000 Ferrari – in white. Because she’s a bride, I think, and everything has to be WHITE. White for purity. For innocence. For youth and virginity. Anyway, you can see Kim’s new 458 Italia Ferrari here – it’s pretty and completely unnecessary.

Last piece of Kim news (because I don’t want to write about her again today): she’s being accused of stealing her jewelry designs for her new line, Belle Noel. Jeweler Alexis Bittar claims Kim’s line looks “very similar” to his, and “They [the Kardashians] are not designers and they are just stealing. I passed the Dash pop up store on Broadway, and I saw that Kim’s pieces were very similar to mine, and she definitely has been taking note (of my designs). The tricky thing is that we have sent pieces to Kim in the past to wear, so now I have told my staff we cannot send anything to her.” Wow, who would have guessed it? The Kardashians can’t do ANYTHING.

The Olsen Twins’ $39,000 fug alligator backpack sells out

wenn3541966
Ashley Olsen carrying the $39k backpack in March

It was back in 2007 that we saw what could have been the ugliest, most expensive bag in history, except of course there are uglier and even more expensive bags. It was this Louis Vuitton monstrosity, the “patchwork bag,” and it was so fug that I thought it was a joke at first. It’s a real bag produced in limited edition and it cost a whopping $45,352 for this monstrosity that looks like the result of an ogre eating several overpriced bags and puking them up as one congealed solid. You know who carried one? Beyonce. I hope they comped her this bag.

The $45,000 Louis Vuitton patchwork bag:
louis-vuitton-tribute-patchwork-bag-1

Well the Olsen Twins have a backpack as part of their fashion line that’s rather tame-looking in comparison, but almost as expensive as this. It’s this crocodile looking thing that Ashley Olsen is carrying in the photo above while she’s trying to hide her face. It’s like something your mom would carry that’s both utilitarian and only moderately stylish. I mean the skin looks fierce, but I would feel awful wearing it. Alligator skin strikes me as not as bad as fur (which the Olsens use liberally in their lines) but worse than leather. (I don’t know much about any of that, though, and it’s not like PETA is going to enlighten me.)

olsenbackpack

This backpack, with a price tag that costs way more than my car, is sold out at Barney’s. Maybe they only had five of them anyway. Here’s more:

What recession? A $39,000 backpack designed by the Olsen twins’ designer brand The Row is selling out.

Former child actress turned high-end fashion designer Ashley Olsen told Women’s Wear Daily that The Row was scrambling to keep up with demand for the luxury car-priced accessory.

“It was the first thing that sold off the shelf,” she said.

Barneys New York began carrying the crocodile-skin [sic: it's alligator] bags in July, in an effort to compete with other ludicrously-priced handbags.

Now, it seems the gamble has paid off.

Amanda Brooks, the fashion director for Barneys New York, told Fashionista this summer that the line of super-pricy bags was a surefire attempt appeal to a younger crowd.

“Obviously we don’t carry Hermes bags in the store so we were trying to find something that appeals to that customer who is willing to spend a lot of money on a bag that’s going to last a long time and has a classic design,” she said.

Brooks also touted another benefit to the bag.

“You also might be the only one who has it,” she said.

Not if the bag keeps flying off the shelves, you won’t.

[From The NY Daily News via ONTD]

Note that Women’s Wear Daily calls the backpack “alligator” while The NY Daily News is calling it “crocodile.” It’s alligator, according to their website. Anyone who wants to carry an insanely overpriced bag designed by the little urchins who used to be child actresses and have the style sense of an elderly nursing home resident off her meds, can rest assured. There are plenty of bags left from their line The Row at Barneys and on their website. Prices start at $3,700. You can nab some sunglasses for a relative bargain at $410. Like this lovely example:

Evan Rachel Wood in leather Gucci: overworked or totally chic?

the_ides_of_march_004_wenn5734067

These are some new photos from last night’s NYC premiere of The Ides of March. For whatever reason, Ryan Gosling wasn’t there. Neither was George Clooney’s official girlfriend Stacy Keibler. Coincidence?!? Are the Gosling and the Keibler off somewhere, laughing about poor, sad Clooney? Probably not. Anyway, Clooney looked nice. Whatever, talking about dudes’ fashion is usually pretty boring. I will say this, though – I LOVE the navy background that they’ve been using for the ‘Ides’ premieres. Everybody looks so sharp and awesome against that navy background. Anyway…

Evan Rachel Wood made the biggest impact, style-wise, last night. Her leather dress is Gucci. I don’t know who did the hat. Thoughts? I… don’t like it. I think I understand the look ERW is trying to achieve – like, a modernized version of some kind of mid-to-late-1970s Annie Hall-inspired boho, right? Tailored but fluid, vintagey but new. I think the dress would be more interesting without the neck bustle/bow, and I think the look in total might be better served without the hat. Plus, Evan’s makeup is WAY overdone. Much too much, especially for someone so young and fresh.

Marisa Tomei in navy (I don’t have the designer ID). I like her dress a lot, and I really like it on her. Her style has been faltering throughout this publicity tour, but this looks really great on her.

And here’s just a touch of Philip Seymour Hoffman. That’s his baby-mama/girlfriend Mimi.

Emma Stone in polka-dotted Luca Luca: terrible or adorable?

uk_the_help_premiere_05_wenn5733854

These are new photos of the UK premiere of The Help. Now… before I throw a hissy fit about Emma Stone’s style, let me take a deep breath and say something nice. I like that 22-year-old girl dresses like a 22-year-old girl who is still experimenting with her style. I like that Emma isn’t wandering around with her biscuits hanging out. I like that her default style position seems to be set on “demure”.

uk_the_help_premiere_11_wenn5733860

Now, for the hissy fit: she wears some of the ugliest crap I’ve ever seen. Remember the beginning of the year, when she appeared at the Golden Globes and she looked so elegant and classic in that peach-pink Calvin Klein? What happened over the course of this year that Emma is now just throwing on whatever horned monstrosity or vagina dust ruffle she can find. This Luca Luca dress has no redeeming qualities. I was going to just ignore the polka dots (I’m not a polka dot person – I don’t see the point in polka dots, honestly) and focus on the cut of the dress, but the cut sucks too! Look at the awkward way it drapes on Emma’s body. Look at that unsexy slit down the front that she’s about trip over. It’s just a hideous dress from start to finish. Please, Emma. Figure out your style. Enough with this crap.

uk_the_help_premiere_07_wenn5733856

More photos: Viola Davis looking gorgeous (that shade of purple is great on her) and Octavia Spencer looking slightly unhinged – but Octavia is still better-dressed than Emma.

Ewan McGregor & Eva Green are perfectly hot at the ‘Perfect Sense’ premiere

ewan_eva_1_wenn3543564

I was drawn in to these UK premiere photos just because I love both Eva Green and Ewan McGregor. I don’t expect you to enjoy these photos as much as I do, but for the love of God, please comment on this post if you’d like me to write more about Eva and Ewan and less about the Kardashians.

Eva and Ewan are just so beautiful to me – Eva, much like Helena Bonham Carter, hides her classic beauty behind profoundly odd styles and makeup choices. Ewan is just pretty, traditionally handsome, with some edge. And they’re made a movie together called Perfect Sense. It’s a love story. They make love on film, together. And weird stuff happens, because it’s a love story mixed with sci-fi. The basic plot is: “A chef and a scientist fall in love as an epidemic begins to rob people of their sensory perceptions.” Ewan is the chef, Eva is the scientist. Here’s the trailer:

Eva’s voiceover is meh – it still would have been haunting and erotic without the voiceover. All I really need to see is Eva and Ewan kissing, and his hand grazing her boob. And is it just me, or does this film look kind of interesting? Like… I’m not sure about the story, but Eva and Ewan look deliciously overwrought here, and I’ll probably watch it just to see them act opposite each other.

So… the premiere photos. Eva always wears these kinds of dresses, and her makeup is always overdone, so my only complaint is about the shoes. They suck, and it looks like she’s about to lose her balance. Ewan just looks gorgeous, though. Sigh… aren’t they better than Kardashians?

Lea Michele in ASOS, Chanel: overworked, fussy or fierce?

wenn3542802

I’ve been meaning to devote a post to Lea Michele for more than a week now, so here are two sets of Lea photos for you. The photos where Lea is in the super-short navy ASOS dress are from the LA premiere of the new FX show, American Horror Story. The photos where Lea is in the long black dress are from Paris, where Lea attended the Karl Lagerfeld ready-to-wear show (or maybe it was a party or something – whatever, it involved Lagerfeld). Lea is obviously posing her ass off in all of the photos. Lea knows where the camera is. She loves the camera, although I’m not sure we can say the camera always loves her. I think Lea is a pretty girl, but in still photos, there’s often a drag queen element at play. I think it’s her jawline, plus unflattering hair styles, plus too much makeup, plus… I don’t know, maybe the way she strains her neck and shoulders as she’s posing? There’s a lot of “drag” happening here.

Lea also gave this totally bring interview about what colors she likes to wear:

‘Glee’ actress Lea Michele never listens to fashion advice as she choose what she likes.
Lea Michele never listens to fashion advice. The ‘Glee’ actress says she was told by the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, not to wear black for her first Golden Globe Awards but decided against his tip.

She told InStyle.com: “Ryan Murphy had told me, ‘Don’t wear black. You should never wear black. So my stylist pulled floral, beautiful colours. As I’m walking to the bathroom to try them on, I see the Oscar [de la Renta] dress hanging up in her closet. I said ‘I’m wearing that.’ And I called Ryan, and said ‘Ryan, I’m wearing black!’”

However, it seems Ryan wasn’t upset about Lea not taking his advice as he recently praised her fashion choices.

He said: “When I met Lea, she was only sort of interested in clothes- but in the last two years she’s become a red-carpet star. I think what happened is Lea went to an event, and someone said, ‘Oh, you look pretty.’ It was an interesting moment for her.”

[From Contact Music]

Please, she’s only a red carpet star in her own mind. In her own mind, she’s a legend already. Lea’s style is like her personality: overworked, trying too hard, and fussy.

Oh, and Ryan Murphy was right – she should be wearing bright colors or light colors. The blacks and the navys really weigh her down, but when she does softer florals, she looks really awesome.

I love her pose-faces. In her mind, she’s all “SEXY-FACE. WORK IT. FIERCE BITCH.” And her face is all “Wonk-eye. Mouth-breather. Drag queen.” Oh, and her bangs trauma is crooked, right? Or does the bitch just need to fix her wiglet?

Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman at Paris Fashion Week: who looked better?

fp_7970017_chp_celebs_chanel_02_12

This year’s Paris Fashion Week seems like it’s under-attended. Maybe that’s my American bias speaking – usually, there are lots of American “fashion girls” who end up doing the rounds all week, but there has only been a handful of Americans this year. Maybe it’s because Linnocent is haunting the City of Lights like the Crackhead of Notre Dame. Maybe it’s because French designers just invited more European celebrities this year. I don’t know.

fp_7970466_chp_celebs_chanel_11_12

Anyway, these are some photos of a few of the Americans fashion girls who did make it to Paris. There’s Jessica Biel making her way into the Valentino show, and Uma Thurman going into the Chanel show. Biel was out and about in Paris yesterday, wearing Giambattista Valli and looking puffy and slightly pregnant. So Biel must be relieved to be wearing this figure-hugging dress, showing off her distinct lack of baby bump. Sidenote: I really, really hate Biel’s shoes. As for Uma… she always looks pregnant to me these days, but beyond that, she looks gorgeous in Chanel. If you’d like to see a slideshow of Chanel’s show, go here.

So, which one of these girls worked Paris Fashion Week harder? Uma looks gorgeous, and she got to sit front-row at Chanel, the must-have position for any “fashion girl” worth her salt. But Jessica Biel achieved something too – she’s still got a career, she’s still considered a fashion girl, and she still gets invited to these events, all with little to no talent as a clothes hanger or as an actress. I don’t know who to choose!

Alex Skarsgard in a shiny blue suit at Melancholia premiere: always hot?

fp_7969250_melancholia_nyc_
Here’s Alexander Skarsgard in a shiny blue suit paired with a brown shirt and matchy blue tie at the Melancholia premiere in New York last night. He’s dressed like Ryan Reynolds here, but I don’t hate his look. This dude could make a muumuu look hot, primarily because we know what’s underneath.

fp_7969247_melancholia_nyc_

fp_7969244_melancholia_nyc_

fp_7969242_melancholia_nyc_

Alex’s co-star Kirsten Dunst was also there looking overdressed in a floor length loose black v-neck gown paired with a black fabric choker. I like the simple cut of the dress and her hair and makeup were so pretty. As far as Dunst’s looks go this was a win for her. She’s had some disastrous fashion in the past. She’s really pulled it together lately and has shown a lot of improvement with a kind of conservative covered-up but feminine style.

fp_7969256_melancholia_nyc_

fp_7969255_melancholia_nyc_

Also there was Charlotte Gainsbourg putting our minor criticisms about Alex and Kiki’s looks to shame. She had major shaggy dog bangs trauma, heavily black rimmed eyes, and ridiculous too-long loose trousers festooned with sparkly silver front panels and an oversize belt. This is the chick who was pregnant during the Cannes promotion for Melancholia and who wore a see through wrap dress over her bump. It looked like she had on a robe, no joke. Maybe she felt uncomfortable with her post-baby body and wanted to cover up. Kristen shows how you do it well and without looking clownish.

Melancholia is a movie about the pending end of the world, as seen through a new bride’s eyes. It’s out in the US in limited release on November 11. It was directed by Nazi-loving Lars Von Trier, and I keep thinking of what Paul Bettany just said about how terrible it was to work with Von Trier after Alex Skarsgard’s dad, actor Stellan, convinced him to do it. “[Von Trier] has no interest in you being any part of the cerebral process with him. You’re absolutely his puppet. But no, I don’t want to be too down on Lars. He is extraordinary and he is a sensation.” You know that Alex isn’t going to trash talk Von Trier, though, he’s going to be gracious about him because he’s not about to jeopardize his career. Plus, that’s just the type of guy he is.

Aren’t these stills from Melancholia so pretty? Here’s a link to the trailer. It’s so weird looking.

Katie Holmes’s casual look involves overalls & high-heeled booties

fp_7966643_holmeskatie_suriout_fp7_12_71

While Tom Cruise is in Pittsburgh, shooting One Shot (the film that has him playing a character who is six-and-a-half feet tall), Tom’s wife and daughter have joined him. Katie Holmes and Suri were photographed yesterday, out and about in Pittsburgh, coming out of the Children’s Museum and getting some ice cream at The Milkshake Factory. It looks like fun, although I guess we should mention that Suri is once again missing school – she was enrolled in a special Xenu school, but Katie pulled her out so that they could go to New York Fashion Week, and now Suri is in Pittsburgh. Perhaps Suri is enrolled in a Pennsylvania school now?

But let’s really talk about what’s happening in these photos. Look at Katie’s overalls! No, look at the outfit in its entirety. I’m not flat-out opposed to overalls as a casual look – some women find them comfortable, and yes, IMO those women tend to like looks that are too “young” (baby doll dress, etc), but it’s fine. If Katie was wearing overalls and flip-flops while she ran errands, this wouldn’t be an issue. But look at how Katie has tried to “dress up” her (truly ugly) overalls – like this is a “pulled together” look. The booties! Ugh. Maybe I’m wrong – maybe this is just Katie’s casual look, and she didn’t put any thought into it. Or maybe Katie thinks she’s a fashion icon and she’s going to make overalls “happen” in a big way.

Also – I love the faces Katie’s making. She hasn’t looked like a zombie lately, and it’s like her face is remembering how to emote like a human being.
