Shakira asks for thousands of teachers, not soldiers
Shakira attends Oxford Union

Shakira has been all over the place these week, doing some extraordinary good deeds. Her main focus is education – but it’s not some vague interest or just some celebrity getting a quick press hit. Shakira is focused on the UN Millennium development goals, which have been a moving target for the past decade. Initially, the goals were basically some dreams for how the UN wanted to focus money in the developing world. Over the past decade, they’ve taken on more meaning, and they’ve become at once broader, and more focused. Just one example – someone like Jeffrey Saks began working with the UN development goals program to create UN Millennium Villages, and they’ve become a model of efficiency and self-sustaining localized economies.

Anyway, Shakira’s focus is with the UN Millennium education goals – namely, to ensure that every child in the world has access to primary school education by the year 2015. Shakira penned an interesting essay in The Economist about the subject:

Nine years ago, at the Millennium Summit at the United Nations headquarters in New York, heads of state from around the world agreed on the Millennium Development Goals to reduce global poverty. One of the key goals was to ensure that by 2015 every child, boys and girls alike, would be able to complete primary school. This means that all those finishing primary school in 2015 will be entering school in 2010. It’s a daunting challenge, but if the G8, the G20 and other nations join together to establish a Global Fund for Education, we can make real progress towards this deadline.

Barack Obama promised America’s support for creating this $2 billion new fund just over a year ago. A similar model already exists. The fund will be an independent and innovative institution similar to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It will include representatives of civil society and developing countries as equal partners alongside donor nations in its governance structure. It will link funding to results—ensuring accountability in the way that funds are spent.

A lot is at stake. In the past two years over 600 schools in Afghanistan have been bombed, burned or shut down by extremists. Eighty percent of these have been schools for girls. Why? Because the education of a child is the most powerful form of national security—and that’s why it is such a threat to militants everywhere.

This isn’t theoretical to me. Growing up in Colombia after decades of conflict I saw that the people who are born poor, die poor. With rare exceptions, they never have the chance to improve their lives.

These people have difficulties finding decent jobs and making a decent life—and they often end up involved in doing things they never imagined. No child dreams of becoming a militant or a drug trafficker. But in developing countries sometimes life doesn’t give you any other option.

Education is the only way to break this cycle. But in today’s world there are still 72m children who are denied the opportunity to go to school and 226m adolescents who don’t attend secondary school.

My foundation in Colombia, Pies Descalzos (“Barefoot”), has proved that the poorest children can be educated. For less than $2 a day per child, our schools provide food, education and counselling services to thousands of students. Our schools help underprivileged children grow in sustainable ways and provide them with the tools they need to break out of the cycle of poverty.

Many people don’t realise that Colombia has one of the largest internally displaced populations in the world. Over 3m people in the country (out of a population of 49m) have fled their homes because of conflict. For this reason we decided that our programmes in Colombia should specifically focus on serving displaced children.

Our work in Colombia combines high-quality academic instruction with recreation, health care and psychological support. We operate six schools in three diverse regions of Colombia: Barranquilla, Quibdó and Altos de Cazucá. Over 5,000 students are directly served in our schools—but approximately 30,000 people benefit from our programmes. For example, in working to combat malnutrition we not only provide students with nourishing meals and evaluate their nutritional status, but we also provide their parents with critical information on health and nutrition.

In addition to physical-health services, the foundation’s programmes support emotional health through counselling and exposure to the arts as well as through advice for families and parenting classes.

We also support the broader community. On any given day our school buildings are hubs of activity—providing a range of services, including adult-literacy classes, youth-leadership development, access to libraries and computer training. Perhaps most importantly, we have also begun to form parent co-operatives focused on teaching parents and on income-generating activities aimed at ensuring that families are financially secure.

We are now in the process of taking this success story to other parts of the world through our non-profit Barefoot Foundation, based in the United States.

If our foundation can bring quality education to some of the poorest children in the world there is no reason why governments can’t do the same thing. Our schools in Colombia are proving each and every day that no matter where a child is from, no matter how poor children are, they can thrive if given the chance.

I refuse to believe that it isn’t possible to educate every child. By establishing a Global Fund for Education in 2010 we will invest in these children’s future—and help to secure our own.

[From Shakira’s essay in The Economist]

In addition to the essay, Shakira gave a speech at Oxford University on Monday, and made a call to “send 30,000 educators to Afghanistan, not 30,000 soldiers.” She also set her own goal: “That in 2010, world education became more important than world domination.” Um… Shakira, we’re not interested in world domination anymore. We’re just trying to get by at this point. But bless your heart. Though her goals are lofty, her heart, mind and wallet are in the right place!

Lindsay Lohan will be cracked-out in India, for the children

wenn2677992

Fresh off her dual headline-making stunts, one in a magazine pictorial threesome, and secondly, for probably hooking up with Jason Segel (and his puppet), Lindsay Lohan wants the world to know that she’s more than just some sketchy, strung-out, washed-up fading celebrity. Time for a world-class stunt! According to Page Six, Lindsay is heading to India to “work with children.” Seriously. She‘s allegedly going to be working on a BBC documentary – oh, wait. This was the trip she announced a month and a half ago. Anyway, “sources” said Lindsay “is excited about escaping the drama of LA and doing something real.” Bitch, please.

It looks like Lindsay Lohan is finally getting her priorities in order (at least we hope!).

According to Page Six, Lindsay is hopping on a flight to India to film a documentary with the BBC to help impoverished children, and “is excited about escaping the drama of LA and doing something real.”

Lindsay’s wild-child reputation has always been at the forefront of her career, and sources say this trip could help change that. “Lindsay is trying to better herself and get away from her party-girl image. She wants to be taken more seriously,” an insider tells Life & Style magazine.

The drama in Lindsay’s life over the past few years seems to continue to escalate. Between her on-again off-again relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson, to the public feuding with her father, Michael Lohan, Lindsay has not had a break from the spotlight. Hopefully this trip will bring a positive focus to the actress and allow her to shake some of that bad press.

The details of the documentary are vague, but it seems like it will be about the trafficking of women and children in India. Lindsay returns to LA on December 12th, and will continue her charity work by donating toys to LA children’s hospitals.

[From MTV]

Okay, India better prepare itself. Because Hurricane Crackhead is coming to town, and she’s not going to leave until she snorts, shoots or licks every drug available. Also, I don’t buy that Lindsay is going to be working on a documentary about missing and exploited children, although she probably knows a thing or two about being exploited by her famewh-re parents. I don’t see how a respectable international organization associates itself with Lindsay. I also don’t see how the BBC can fund a documentary featuring Lindsay… unless this is some kind of elaborate ruse to film Lindsay being a crackhead… in which case, it’s kind of brilliant. I would watch it.

Angelina Jolie has a “secret family” in Jordan

angelinasos1

Back in October, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt visited the Middle East. Specifically, Jordan and Syria. Part of the trip was for Angelina’s work with the UNHCR – she and Brad visited several Iraqi refugees living in Syria. For the other part, Brangelina visited Jordan to chill out with Queen Noor or Rania (or both), and to visit the Queens’ favorite projects, the SOS Children’s Villages. The basic gist of the SOS Children’s Village concept is that orphans – from every walk of life – all live together in one home, and help raise each other, with adult supervisors at every step. The program does a lot more too – they help with vocational training to the older kids, and teach the basics of organizing a home. Here is the donation page for the SOS-USA program.

Anyway, CB told me at the time that Angelina had visited an SOS Village before, but I couldn’t really remember. Now the Enquirer is reporting that Angelina has been visiting Jordan’s SOS Villages for many years – so much so that she has a “secret family” of children that she’s supporting:

Angelina Jolie has a secret family that she’s kept hidden for six years!

While her recent visit to an orphanage in the Middle East with Brad Pitt sparked speculation the couple planned to adopt another child, The ENQUIRER can reveal the Tomb Raider star has had a family in the region since 2003.

The 34-year-old actress has been paying to support seven orphans – three girls and four boys – at the SOS Children’s Village in Amman, Jordan.

“Angelina considers the orphans as her own family. She stays in touch with them and really cares about how they are doing,” said an insider. “That’s why she was so excited about taking Brad to see them. They both feel this is a way they can help so many more children.”

The children Angelina has taken under her wing live together in one house with a surrogate mother. Her contributions help pay for the children’s food, clothing, education and other expenses.

“On her visit, Angelina just wanted to play with the kids and have fun,” orphanage employee Aysha Shahin told a reporter.

“She spent time with the family and spoke with the mother, Fatima. Some of the teenagers had come back from university to see her and she was giving them advice about life and school.

“It was Brad’s first visit to the SOS Village and he was amazed by everything.”

The star couple already has six children – adopted sons Maddox, 8, from Cambodia, and Pax, 6, from Vietnam, adopted daughter Zahara, 4, from Ethiopia, and their own biological kids Shiloh, 3, and 16-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

Angelina has said in the past that she hopes to adopt more kids with Brad, 45, although officials confirmed the SOS Village does not offer children for adoption. Angelina was first introduced to the facility by Jordan’s Queen Noor Al Hussein, who is an ambassador for the charity.

“Angelina will definitely support us by visiting again, by marketing us to other people and sponsoring a house which will pay the children’s expenses,” said Aysha.

“She IS a sweetheart, and one of our greatest supporters.”

[From The National Enquirer]

Well… that’s really cool. I’m not sure if Angelina has been supporting these kids for as long as the Enquirer claims, but I bet she’s been donating for at least the past three years or so. My guess is that Angelina simply donated to the organization for several years, then made a visit to Jordan and saw first-hand how the operation was going, and spent time with some kids that she decided to specifically sponsor.

Gordon Brown confuses Reese Witherspoon with Renee Zellweger
Reese Witherspoon Reveals Wall Of Silence Around Domestic Violence

First of all, doesn’t Reese Witherspoon look pretty in these photos? Not the ones where she’s making a grumpy face, of course, but I’m just talking about her skin, hair and her figure. Whatever is happening in her personal life and her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, it’s working for her. Anyway, Reese is in London, giving testimony and interviews about her work on behalf of ending domestic violence, part of her work with Avon. These photos – of Reese wearing a really great red shift dress – are from Reese’s photocall before she gave the keynote speech at The House Of Commons conference on Domestic violence at the House of Commons today. It’s a great cause, and it’s wonderful that Reese is taking her advocacy work so seriously.

Unfortunately, her commitment has been overshadowed by a minor yet hilarious flub by the Prime Minister. Gordon Brown was asked about Reese’s work today, and he replied that he was “grateful that Renee Witherspoon is leading this campaign.” Mr. Brown met Renee Zellweger last year, when they attended director Anthony Minghella’s funeral. And I guess he thought he was meeting Renee again for the second time? I mean, I guess how a simple mix-up happened. They’re both blond, they both make romantic comedies and dramas, they’re both Oscar winners. Let me write Mr. Brown a memo: Renee = squinty, Reese = pointy chin. That should clear it up.

Leaving behind the chatter about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon tackled the topic of domestic violence in the U.K. this week.

Petitioning Members of Parliament and appearing on morning shows she asked people to speak out on an issue that affects one in three around the world.

“We are talking about everyone’s lives are touched by this issue, whether it be our children, or our mothers or our sisters. So many women. The most important thing I can do here today is start this dialogue that we’re having,” Witherspoon, 33, told the show GMTV.

Later, Witherspoon went to the historic Houses of Parliament, where she made a brief address and listened to testimonies of abuse.

“She looked quite emotional, she kept looking to the floor whilst she was listening to the other speakers,” an onlooker said “She seemed almost tearful.”

Witherspoon said she felt “more than a little overwhelmed to be here today.”

[From People]

Yea for Reese! It’s funny, I’ve never, ever had a problem with Reese’s name, and now that Gordon Brown has made that mistake, I keep wanting to type “Renee”. Maybe Renee and Reese should join forces and become “Renese”. With that squint and that chin, no romantic comedy would be safe! Seriously, though, I love Reese. I can’t get over how gorgeous she looks in these photos.

Katie Holmes attends charity event solo, looks really young & happy

wenn2674959

These are photos of Katie Holmes attending the Dizzy Feet Foundation’s Inaugural Celebration of Dance at The Kodak Theater in Hollywood last night. Katie wore a really cute outfit to the event. “Cute” being relative, of course, but the look still surprises me. A short dress paired with a cute motorcycle jacket. Her color is great, she’s smiling and animated in almost every picture. There is no hint of zombie. There is also no hint of Tom Cruise. Katie went to the even solo, which I’m sure will be the main point of several tabloid stories this week.

Katie’s been involved with the Dizzy Feet Foundation since this summer, when she danced on So You Think You Can Dance? The Dizzy Feet Foundation is a nonprofit that “provides assistance to talented underprivileged youth.” It’s a nice cause for Katie to be involved with, and you can tell she really cares about it. She cares so much she left her film in New York to fly to Hollywood for a night, just for a charity event. Of course, Katie is also a producer on her film, so she probably got people to work around her.

Katie Holmes has been hanging out with her dancing pals in Hollywood. She hit the red carpet outside of the legendary Kodak Theatre ahead of a special dance gala for the Dizzy Feet Foundation, an organisation the actress has helped found alongside So You Think You Can Dance judge Nigel Lythgoe, director Adam Shankman and Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba.

“It’s so good for kids to have this outlet and to have this opportunity,” Katie told local news channel ABC 7. “There are so many deserving kids out there that need the help, and it’s really rewarding to be a part of something that can give it to them.”

Nigel explained how they’d already awarded scholarships to underprivileged students to attend the Juilliard School, the American Ballet Theatre and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy.

“It means so much to all of us, today is going to produce scholarships for at least 10 new dancers next season, plus we’ll be able to back the nine dancers we’ve given scholarships to this season,” he said. “We’re just growing and this is our first show, it’s just so exciting at the moment.”

A host of famous dancing names came out to either their lend support or perform, including Dancing With the Stars’ Lance Bass, Lacey Schwimmer, Dmitry Chaplin, Cheryl Burke, Derek Hough and Mark Ballas. So You Think You Can Dance’s Cat Deeley was also there to give her backing, along with Nigel’s fellow dancing panel friend Mary Murphy.

DWTS judge Carrie Ann Inaba said she and her fellow co-founders have some clear goals they’re determined to achieve.

“Dizzy Feet is all about giving that opportunity back to future generations… We’re going to create more and more baby dancers!”

[From The Press Association]

I’m sure people will criticize Katie for her solo appearance, and for wearing such a low-key outfit to the event (Entertainmentwise is already calling her “disheveled”) but I think she looks cute as hell. She looks her age for once! I hate when she works that older, zombie-trophy-wife look. By putting on a miniskirt (sort of) and a cute jacket, she seems to be telling us “Xenu who?” Epic.

Ali Lohan dresses like a kid, helps her mom at a charity luncheon

wenn5397121

Do you even recognize her? Here’s 15-year-old Ali Lohan with her mom, Dina, helping out at a charity luncheon in Long Island. Ali is wearing a holiday sweater! And she isn’t wearing hooker makeup, or hooker heels. Praise the Long Island Lord. The luncheon was for 200 people “suffering from autism and other disabilities.” It’s a really, really nice thing to do, so I’m not going to snark on it.

Alright… one small snarky thing: Dina looks totally over it in these photos. Ali looks like she’s having a good time (she’s probably really comfortable in those clothes as opposed to her nighttime hooker-wear that Lindsay makes her put on), but Dina looks like “get me out of here and into a Shoe-han store.”

LINDSAY LOHAN’s mother, sister and grandmother spread a little Thanksgiving cheer on Tuesday (24Nov09) by helping to serve food at a charity luncheon in New York.

Dina Lohan, her youngest daughter Ali and her mother Ann joined volunteers at the Harbor Links Club and Grill on Long Island to dish up a pre-Thanksgiving meal to over 200 people suffering from autism and other disabilities.

The event took place two days before the U.S. celebrates the annual holiday on Thursday.

[From Contact Music]

I’m struggling to find the angle on this one, honestly. I mean, I know some people will bitch about “oh, there were cameras there, they weren’t doing it out of the goodness of their hearts” but I doubt the cameras bothered the 200 people they were feeding, you know? I’ve come to the conclusion that Ali and Dina might have sincerely done this to be… good people. To spend a few hours being nice. Granted, it’s after years of being crazy (for Dina) and years of wanting to be just like her crackhead sister (for Ali). But still… good work.

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’s 2008 charitable giving excedes $6 million
MOCA NEW 30th Anniversary Gala - Cocktails

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie founded their joint charity project, The Jolie-Pitt Foundation (JPF) back in 2006. From what I remember, both Brad and Angelina both made initial multi-million dollar investments in the foundation, and then donated the money People Magazine and Hello gave them for Shiloh’s first pictures. And then came the twins – Brad and Angelina have never come right out and said how much they got for the twins’ first pictures in 2008, but most estimates have it in the $10-15 million range. Along the way, I’m sure Angelina and Brad have put in more of their own money into the Foundation, and E! even contributed $250,000 in 2007 – either as a general apology for Ryan Seacrest, or something involving E! cameramen breaking and entering on Brad’s property or something.

My point? By my estimates, the Jolie-Pitt Foundation has received something in the neighborhood of $20-25 million in its nearly four years. The foundation doesn’t really serve any purpose (to me) other than to legitimize Angelina and Brad’s charitable giving, giving it a professional and less personal veneer. The JPF is run separately from their other charity work – it’s not a part of Make It Right NOLA, or the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project in Cambodia, or Angelina’s Global Action for Children, or her work with the UNHCR, although they contribute to those charities through the JPF. With some-odd eight digits in the bank, Brad and Angelina spent 2008 donating like crazy, according to recent tax filings that the Hollywood Reporter just got:

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk. According to the 2008 tax return for the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, the Hollywood couple sent over $6 million to charities last year.

Indeed, they more than doubled what they gave in 2007, which is pretty impressive.

In 2008, the pair parked just over $13 million in their foundation, and gave away half of it.

The biggest recipients of their largesse were: Global Health ($2 million), Human Rights Watch ($1 million), Brad’s Make it Right Foundation ($1 million).

Some other notable contributions: $500,000 to the Armed Services YMCA of the U.S. Army; $50,000 to the Springfield, Missouri Public Schools (Brad’s hometown); and roughly a million dollars to projects in Cambodia, the country from which they adopted their first child.

The nice thing about Brad and Angelina’s donations: there are no cults, no crazy projects, private religions, nothing untoward or wacky. It’s all about human rights initiatives and helping people. They’ve also kept their promises to places like Cambodia and Iraq. All together, the fair market value of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation is just over $12 million.

No scandals here. Just a nice story. By the way, Brad and Angie each put about $6 million into the foundation last year. Their lawyer, Robert Offer, added $10,000 out of his own pocket. And all they paid in expenses was $224,564 for grant management to Global Philanthropy Group. No one’s aunt or cousin got a salary, and there were no expenses laid off to “travel,” “conferences,” or “other.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

One of my favorite parts about the evolution of the JPF is that Brad and Angelina are not just giving globally, to larger charities doing broad work internationally, they’re also giving locally to smaller charities that may be overlooked. Over the past year, they’ve begun to give extensively to Brad’s home state of Missouri, donating to a Missouri university in Brad’s dad’s name, and to a Missouri hospital in his mom’s name. I know people will still have negative stuff to say about this, but I will join with the Hollywood Reporter in being thankful this money didn’t go to the Church of Scientology or to fund some new XenuMobile. It’s nice.

John Travolta thanks neighbors at hometown opening of ‘Old Dogs’

travolta1

John Travolta, wife Kelly Preston, and their daughter Ella went to a special premiere of their new film “Old Dogs” in their adopted hometown of Ocala, Florida on Friday. This is their first public appearance in Ocala since their son Jett passed away last January. By all accounts it was a very emotional premiere, and the Travoltas were nothing but gracious and appreciative. They thanked the community for all the support and love they’ve received over the last year, and Ella even got a street named after her.

In an emotional appearance in his adopted hometown, John Travolta and his family thanked their Florida neighbors for their support after the death of son Jett.

“It’s meant the world to us,” Travolta, 55, told the crowd Friday night at the Ocala, Fla., premiere of his film Old Dogs, according to the Ocala Star-Banner. “We know that we have a community. We know that we have friends. And we know that we are loved. We appreciate it. Jett appreciates it. We love you, Ocala.”

Joining the actor at the premiere were wife Kelly Preston and 9-year-old daughter Ella Bleu, who appears in the film along with her parents.

The Travoltas, who live just north of Ocala, also appeared at a private fundraising gala for local charities, including the Jett Travolta Foundation.

[From People]

The other charities that benefited from the Travolta’s private gala at the premiere are the Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council, Project Hope, the Marion County Public Safety Assistance Trust and the Humane Society of Marion County. All of them were personally chosen by John. He also has a history of premiering his films in Ocala as a benefit for non-profits. According to Ocala.com, Travolta did the same thing in 2007 for “Wild Hogs” and 2008 for “Bolt.” And though they haven’t released any official numbers on how much money was raised, it was at least $37,500 just from the gala ticket sales.

It’s pretty amazing that John and Kelly were still able to hold a charity premiere in their hometown, given everything they’ve gone through this year. It certainly would have been understandable if they’d passed. Clearly they wanted to thank their community for the kindness and support they’ve been given, and it sounds like the whole event was a success.

Sharon Stone, AIDS activist honoree, is a tranny hot mess
8th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundations "An Enduring Vision" - Arrivals

Sharon Stone is killing me! I love this picture so, so much. I love the fug, ridiculous dress, I love that Sharon is mid-cackle in the photo, I love that she accessorized with a leather jacket and a top hat. This bitch is so crazy, this outfit barely scratches the damn surface. Oops… correction: the fug, sheer bottom is actually a pair of pants, not a skirt. Who the fug makes this junk?

Apparently, the dress is Dior Haute Couture – which, you know, sucks for Dior. You want Crazy McCackle to show off your designs? Uh, no. Sharon wore this get-up to the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s “An Enduring Vision” benefit in New York City on Monday night. On the red carpet, there is picture after picture of Sharon with the leather jacket covering her up. There’s only one picture of this – which I guess means that Sharon knew the outfit was fug, and she just decided to laugh about it.

Okay, now I’ll be nice to Crazy Pants. Sharon was being honored at the event for her tireless work with HIV/AIDS charities. She really does believe in her AIDS work, and I applaud her for it. It’s not some flash in the pan involvement – she’s been deeply commited to a wide range of AIDS charities for decades now. She and President Bill Clinton were both honorees last night, and Elton John didn’t cancel his appearance at the event either, even though he’s been very sick with an E. coli infection. Anderson Cooper was the M.C. of the event, and you know he cracked a joke or two about the Crazy Pants.

Christie Brinkley endorses ‘tea party angels’ for tweens to learn about charity

wenn2647184
This story really touched me, and I wanted to share it here. Christie Brinkley is endorsing a new project meant to help young girls learn about charity and do their part. Through selling kits for charity-based tea parties for tween girls, Tea Party Angels hopes to educate them about the situation of girls and women in the third world along with raising money for worthy causes. The group supports charities throughout the world, with a focus on girls’ education. Christie explains in a video on the website for Tea Party Angels (link has automatic video) that “Just one party could buy tuition, a uniform, books, a bike for one girl so she can go to school.”

Brinkley and Tea Party Angels founder Cheryl Beck explained the project to MomLogic. Beck calls Tea Party Angels “a tribute to the memory of my grandmothers Beck and Jackson. Two completely different yet amazing women whose tea cups I keep visible to me every day for inspiration.” She has a background in marketing and wanted to do something to raise awareness and money for charity:

Momlogic: Cheryl, how did you come up with the tea party idea?
Cheryl: There’s so much movement around helping girls’ education around the world. I really feel passionate about it — and I wanted to use my creativity and marketing talent to put something together and give back. I tried to come up with something that would be like a party in a box — something really easy in terms of a fund-raising opportunity.

ML: Christie, aside from being here today, you and your daughter host the Tea Party Angels video. How did you get involved?
Christie: They tracked me down and I’m so thrilled and honored that they did. I really feel that our kids should be giving back, and that girls are overlooked. They really don’t understand the power that they have. Girls and women are naturally nurturing, and so to actually tap into that power and give them a way that they can literally change the world is so amazing. It’s wonderful for our daughters to come to understand that they can make a difference.

ML: A girls-helping-girls-by-doing-something-girly concept? What a win-win!
Cheryl: I thought if there are girls that need help around the world, then what better opportunity than to have girls in the U.S. helping them and really learning that all girls don’t have the same privileges that we have. There are so many girls that don’t even know that girls in other countries don’t have schools. So, part of our mission is to spread awareness, and that will foster the spirit of wanting to give back in charity. But it has to start with an understanding that these girls don’t have the same basic necessities.

Christie: The event actually illustrates to them how they can help people. It’s not just an abstract concept. They can learn about the chain of events that happen when they get involved. They learn that they can either stay in front of a computer or TV set, or go out to an event and raise some money — which in a third-world nation is a ton of money — and they can see what happens when a girl their age is exposed to a book, a school, a library … it opens up an entire world of opportunity and possibilities.

I just think it’s so wonderful. I was shocked to learn that no one else has empowered young girls. It’s amazing how many kids really want to help. We just need to provide them with a formula. The tea parties are a really fun formula — they can see their friends while giving back and making a difference.

ML: What are your goals for Tea Party Angels?
Christie: I want thousands and thousands of mothers and daughters hosting tea parties across the country. Even if the tea party raises a little bit of money, it’ll add up to millions and really make a difference.

[From MomLogic]

You can learn more on their website, and order kits for a charity tea party for $35, which includes cups and saucers for six girls, a teapot, and an educational DVD. This is such a great concept and good for Brinkley for lending her star power to such a worthy cause!
