Jude Law makes humanitarian trip to Afghanistan

Jude Law is really turning out to be an alright guy. Despite having cheated on his now-ex-wife Sadie Frost with Sienna Miller (pretty much the lowest of all people with whom you can cheat) several years ago, Law seems to have quietly turned a page. Law is heading to Kabul for the second time as part of the United Nation’s annual International Day of Peace on September 21st.

“Please mark the day,” Law, an ambassador for Peace One Day, said at a news conference Monday. “The need now is greater than ever before.” Law arrived in Kabul along with film producer Jeremy Gilley, bringing with them The Day After Peace, their documentary on Afghanistan that culminates in last year’s ceasefire event, to further promote the nonviolent effort. Law went on to say he was not expecting the war to end on his count, but that they were hoping, as before, to take advantage of a “pause” in the fighting.

“And if that pause is simply to allow, as we did in last year’s call for action here, vaccinating children or bringing in food…then let’s use that… What we hope to do…is remind all parties that it is happening and see then what happens through negotiations.” According to the Peace One Day organization, last year’s Day of Peace resulted in roughly 1.4 million children receiving inoculations and helped establish a mass polio vaccination program in Afghanistan, reaching children they otherwise would not have been able to as they are living in Taliban-controlled areas.

Law and Gilley premiered The Day After Peace, a 10 years in the making documentary on the nation culminating in last year’s Day of Peace, at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The film features appearances by Angelina Jolie, Jonny Lee Miller, Annie Lennox, Kofi Annan and the Dalai Lama.

Pretty hard to argue with that. I’m a really big fan of celebrities who use their fame to bring about some sort of good. It doesn’t really matter how big or small or what their reasons are. If it in some way helps the less fortunate, more power to anyone who does something.

David Spade saves Arizona animal shelter with $10,000 donation

He’s built a career playing snotty little know-it-all guys. He dates Playboy bunnies. But actor David Spade also has a humanitarian side, which he recently showed with a $10,000 donation to an animal shelter located in his hometown of Lakeside, Arizona, where Spade’s mother still lives.

David Spade has donated $10,000 to save the Humane Society of the White Mountains in his mother’s town of Lakeside, Arizona, a source tells Usmagazine.com.

“The shelter was falling apart, and they were going to shut it down, so he stepped in,” says the source. “It was far and above what they needed and ever received.”

[From Us Weekly]

According to the shelter’s web site, the facility specializes in rescuing animals who have been abandoned in the surrounding mountains. The shelter neuters, immunizes and cares for more than 3,500 animals a year until they can be adopted. Usually, I think David Spade is a snarky little jerk, but he gets points from this animal lover. I especially like that he did it under the radar without issuing a press statement or inviting a bunch of photographers along. Yes, I’m looking at you, Paris.

Kanye West teams up with MTV for veteran documentary

I have given Kanye West a pretty hard time in the past. So I think it’s important to be just as effusive when he does something praiseworthy. Kanye started a foundation in his mother’s honor after she died. Along with the foundation, Kanye has joined up with MTV to produce an episode of the Choose or Lose documentary in which he visits veterans returning home, and highlights the issues and hardships they face.

In this next installment of “Choose or Lose,” MTV’s ongoing campaign to bring awareness to young veterans issues, MTV News and Kanye West have teamed up to tell the stories of returning veterans in the powerful documentary “Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming” set to air on Monday, July 28 at 10pm ET/PT.

In this one hour special, Kanye, along with Sway Calloway, give recently returned Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans the surprise of their lives by unexpectedly visiting their homes. Viewers will see first-hand the difficult and often painful challenges young vets face when they return home.

“There are hundreds of veterans out there who are falling through the cracks. They make the ultimate sacrifices for us by laying down their lives, but it seems like a lot of them just get forgotten about,” West said. “I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people, but you can always do more. I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories. I went to their homes to listen and get their firsthand experiences. I wanted to hear their stories.”

[From Concrete Loop]

The best part about this – aside from bringing the important issue of young veterans to the attention of the public – is that the Dr. Donda West Foundation gave each veteran some kind of major, life-altering gift – like full tuition for college, rent, or paying off their debts. From the synopsis, it sounds like they’re talking about something truly substantial – not a month or two of rent or partial assistance paying for school books. I can’t imagine what a powerful and wonderful gift that must have been for all involved. It’s great to bring attention to an issue, but even greater when you can do something like improve someone’s life in a better way. Big congrats to Kanye for working on this.

Prince Harry helps rebuild school in poverty-stricken Lesotho

Prince Harry has been carrying on his mother’s good work by spending time rebuilding schools in Lesotho, a small, landlocked African nation of 1.8 million people. One out of three people in the country has HIV or AIDS. Harry first visited the country during his gap year between high school and college. After being moved by the experience, he set up a charity he named Sentebale – which means Forget Me Not in the local language – which focuses on helping the country build important infrastructure and deal with the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Prince Harry is once again raising a hand to help the AIDS-stricken African nation of Lesotho, this time building a special-needs school with his army buddies from the Household Cavalry’s Blues and Royals regiment. Harry, 23, says he hopes the facility in the northern town of Butha Buthe will be the first of many that can be provided by his Sentebale charitable foundation, reports Britain’s Telegraph.

“At Sentebale, as long as we can keep funding the projects, we can make a massive, massive difference,” the newspaper quotes Harry as saying – as he was building a ramp to help disabled students get to school. Once completed, the Thuso Centre will welcome more than 40 children with severe physical and mental disabilities – the first such school of its kind in the small kingdom.

“Everything here is just so positive and fantastic,” says the royal. “Once the project is finished, we hope to make another in the center [of the nation] and one in the south. The children of Lesotho, the vulnerable children of Lesotho, that’s what we’re working towards.”

[From People]

Prince Harry also mentioned that his trip to Lesotho was not a photo op, but that he hoped his presence would bring more attention to the country. He said that many NGOs have left, believing the country too small and it’s problems too great to be solved. Which is incredibly sad to hear. Harry has been to the country several times to help build and oversee Sentebale.

Jennifer Lopez performs at autistic kids’ graduation

Jennifer Lopez gets a lot of crap for being a diva. To be fair, 96% of it probably comes from me. That’s right, I control the media. Regardless, it’s only fair to point out when she does something good, too. To be fair, Lopez isn’t exactly known as the next in line to steal Angelina Jolie’s humanitarian of Hollywood title. But she did something pretty awesome yesterday, by surprising some 10-to-12 year olds by showing up to their graduation.

Students at a Staten Island, New York, elementary school for autistic children sure like the way Jennifer Lopez moves.

Teacher Kathy Amati and a paraprofessional showed the video for Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud” to the students at P.S. 37. The children liked it so much, they wanted to watch it every day.

They learned the lyrics and the dance moves from the video.

With their teacher’s encouragement, they wrote to Lopez, hoping for pictures or an autograph. Instead, she asked to come to their graduation.

On Tuesday, the singer-actress performed “Let’s Get Loud” for a group of eight 10- and 11-year-olds at their graduation ceremony.

How very Johnny Depp of her. I love it when celebrities do something nice, but what I really love is when they go above and beyond what was asked of them. And let’s face it, anyone willing to make the trek to Staten Island on that garish orange ferry is a good person just for that. While her motivations may just be to get some good PR, who the hell cares? Lopez did something really nice and I’m guessing it made the kids’ year. So kudos to her, and congrats to the grads.

David Beckham visits Sierra Leone

beckhamfood1.jpg

Apparently David Beckham is quite the humanitarian. Though he’s most famous for being married to Posh… and something about football… he’s actually been a UNICEF ambassador for seven years. Who knew? He and Posh also have their own charity, but supposedly they don’t do it for publicity, which is why the rest of us haven’t heard much about it. Beckham hasn’t done a lot of UNICEF stuff lately, so he decided to go to Sierra Leone to draw attention to the impoverished country, which has the highest rate of child deaths in the world.

“We can’t turn a blind eye to the tens of thousands of young children who die every day in the developing world mostly from causes that are preventable,” added the father-of-three. “In Sierra Leone, one in four children dies before reaching their fifth birthday — it’s shocking and tragic especially when the solutions are simple,” said Beckham.

Measures that could be taken to tackle the problem include vaccinating against measles or using a mosquito net to reduce the chances of getting malaria. “Saving these children’s lives is a top priority for UNICEF and as an ambassador I hope I can help to draw attention to this issue across the world,” said the LA Galaxy star, who spent four days in Sierra Leone.

[From the Agence France-Presse]

Though I’m always a little skeptical when celebrities suddenly become do-gooders, it appears David Beckham has being one for quite some time. He’s just been fairly quiet about it, and actually focuses on the cause, and not attaching his name to it. Beckham said the only reason he’s doing so much publicity for UNICEF and Sierra Leone is because his role for the agency is to bring attention and publicity to the problem.

In absolutely ridiculous David Beckham gossip, supposedly he will be joining good friend Snoop Dogg and rapping on one of Snoop’s upcoming tracks. David Beckham might be rapping with Snoop Dogg on a new track if rumours are anything to go by. The BFFs have so far designed a slipper together. So the next logical step is rap.

The source says: “Snoop thought it’d be a laugh and David is going to give it a real go. They are huge names so the song’s bound to be a hit – even if it’s no good.”

[From Angry Ape]

Even if it’s no good? Well at least they’re keeping their expectations low. Expect an update with a complete denial by one of their reps in the next three hours.

Kid Rock gave busboy $1,000

91814111.jpg

Never let it be said that Kid Rock is not a gentleman. Sure he may randomly attack you at an awards show, and he and his crew may beat you up at 5 a.m. at a waffle house, but if you return expensive stuff to him, he will take care of you handsomely. Kid Rock was eating at Justin Timberlake’s Upper East Side restaurant Southern Hospitality the other day when a busboy spotted a watch on the floor. He returned it to Kid Rock, and what ensued is the stuff service worker legends are made of.

Looking out for Kid Rock sure is rewarding. When a busboy at Southern Hospitality found a $200,000 watch on the floor and returned it to Kid, the rocker gave him $1,000 cash. “The watch wasn’t even his; it belonged to one of Kid’s friends,” said our source. Rock was also throwing cash at members of his raucous crew. “He was daring his friends to drink bottles of tabasco and barbecue sauce. Two of his friends won $500 each” for stepping up to the challenge, said our source.

[From Page Six]

Alright, new life plan: quit job and follow Kid Rock and his entourage around wherever they go. Hand them back whatever random crap they drop on the ground. Reap insane rewards.

I always enjoy stories of celebrities being exceptionally cool to the rest of us “little people.” Especially when it’s people like Kid Rock, who is generally known for his excessive rowdiness/debauchery/quasi-douchebaggery. In other Kid Rock-related news, his arraignment for October’s waffle house battery incident has been postponed to February 4th. It also appears he may get out of the charges completely, pending a review of the evidence. Kid Rock also escaped charges in the beating up Tommy Lee at the VMA’s incident. I’m going to assume that none of this legal luck was influenced by $1000 bills. But it could likely have something to do with tabasco drinking competitions.

Picture note by Jaybird: The sexiness that is Kid Rock, shown as he kicked off the Detroit Auto Show with a concert and fashion show featuring celeb designers and GM cars on January 13th. Images thanks to Splash Photos.

Paris Hilton is a great environmentalist

Paris Hilton just becomes a better and better person. Clearly her jail time really did change her, and her statements that she would contribute more to the world were not just empty promises. Sure she flaked on that humanitarian mission to Africa, and has spent a good deal of her time drunkenly counting the pennies in fountains, but she’s changed, damn it. Case in point: last weekend, Paris saved an Oompa-Loompa’s life. She also gave Britney Spears career advice. And now Paris is publicly bragging about what an incredibly environmentalist she is. And because it’s Paris, you know it’s true, and she’s not just inflating one tiny little thing to make it look like she’s Mother Theresa.

Paris Hilton is making a personal contribution to protecting the environment. “I changed all the light bulbs to energy-safe light bulbs and I’m buying a hybrid car right now,” the 26-year-old celebrity heiress said Wednesday. Hilton said she turns off the lights, doesn’t leave the TV on or the water running when she leaves her house. “Little things that people can do every day to make a huge difference,” she said.

She was in Berlin to take part in an advertising campaign for Rich Prosecco, a sparkling wine sold in cans. Hilton told reporters she’s looking for a boyfriend and knows exactly what qualities Mr. Right should possess. “Right now I’m single but I am looking for a nice boy,” she said. “He should be funny, smart and loyal.”

Hilton said she was planning to visit one of Berlin’s Christmas markets, the city’s famous museums, and had already been partying at the city’s trendy Cookies club.

[From Yahoo News]

Blech. I hate that I can’t actually call her out on her comments, because they’re true. All the little things add up and matter. Somehow putting that under the heading “Paris Hilton helping protect the environment” seems a bit much, but that’s probably Yahoo’s fault. Still, who goes to Berlin to promote sparking wine in a can and then talks about what a great environmentalist they are? Paris Hilton. She’ll say whatever she thinks makes her look good, regardless of the truth behind it. And while I’m glad she has energy efficient lights and turns them off when she’s not in the room, something tells me she actually has an assistant, or maybe her illegal pet kinkajou Baby Luv, follow her around and turn off all her lava lamps. And not leaving the water running when you’re not home is generally a good idea regardless of the environment. It keeps your home from flooding. That’s probably why people have been turning their faucets off long before people paid attention to conservation.

Note by Celebitchy: The BZ, Berlin’s version of The Sun, has a cover story about Paris today in which they call her “Princess Trash.” They say she was 50 minutes late to her press conference and point out that she brought multiple bodyguards with her.

Here’s Paris out in Maxim Night Club last night in Berlin trying to feel up the DJ. Note how the other club-goers don’t even glance at her. Thanks to WENN.
