Charlize Theron shows off her newly buzzed hair during an outing with baby Jackson

These are some new photos of Charlize Theron and her son Jackson in LA yesterday. Fame/Flynet says she was taking Jackson to the doctor for a checkup – I always wonder how photo agencies get those details, or whether they’re just making the assumption, “Oh, she’s walking into a pediatrician’s office – it must be time for Jackson’s checkup!” Anyway, I just wanted to talk about these photos because there’s a lot to discuss:

*OMG Jackson is so cute. OMG. He has a beautiful little face. And he’s so tiny and alert! BABIES! I love his green pants. I love his itty-bitty kicks. And I especially love his hat.

*Is Charlize carrying a diaper bag? Is that fabulous black suede bag her diaper bag? Or is it just a tote bag that she repurposed as a diaper bag? My guesstimate for the cost of that “diaper bag”: $2000.

*I kind of love Charlize’s outfit. It’s the kind of outfit that only really works on someone like Charlize, though. I couldn’t work those Capri pants. And horizontal stripes make me look like a circus tent. Also: LOOK! She’s wearing flats. Hallelujah.

*As Lainey pointed out, it really looks like Charlize buzzed her hair. Is it all gone? Is Charlize copying Anne Hathaway? Did Charlize just get tired of her sometimes unflattering weaves and hairpieces, and in a fit of pique, she just shaved her head? Or did Charlize get a buzz cut for her role in Mad Max: Fury Road? Charlize is supposed to do that film at some point (IMDB says July) with Tom Hardy, Zoe Kravitz and Nicolas Hoult.

*Re: the buzz cut – if it is for Mad Max (probably), do you think more or less of Charlize for undergoing a drastic style change for the sake of a film which will definitely not score her an Oscar nomination? Do you get what I’m asking? Like, Anne Hathaway cut off her hair for Les Miserables, and that transformation will be the centerpiece of her Oscar campaign. Do you think Anne’s transformation-for-awards is better or worse than Charlize’s transformation-for-badassery?

Zoe Kravitz shows off her new choppy haircut at a Chanel event: lovely & adorable?

I don’t have any hard and fast rules for ladies chopping off all of their hair. For some women, short, choppy haircuts are a great, sophisticated look, and with a new haircut, you suddenly see the women in a completely new (and better) way. But on some women, short haircuts are a total disaster. Really short hair tends to make me nervous, regardless of whether or not I think the cut suits the lady. Why nervous? Because I have sympathy pains for how difficult and awkward it will be for a woman to grow it out. Even in the age of weaves, lace-fronts, extensions and wigs, most women do tend to just stick it out the old-fashioned way and just grow out their real hair. And it gets awkward. Like, remember how everyone was crazy about Emma Watson’s little pixie cut? And then she grew it out just a tad and suddenly she looked like Justin Bieber? That’s what makes me nervous.

Anyway, these are some new photos of Zoe Kravitz and her mom at last night’s Chanel event, “The Little Black Jacket”. Zoe was showing off her new haircut. Thoughts? Anything and everything is an improvement over her (honest to God) itty-bitty bangs trauma. I think she’s been growing out her bangs over the past several months, and she decided to chop everything off and let it all grow out together. I have to admit… I think this suits her lovely face. It’s cute and rock and roll, and it’s also going to be a bitch to grow out.

Zoe’s boyfriend Penn Badgley was also at the event. I don’t get what he’s doing with his facial hair lately.

More photos from the event – Crystal Renn finally dyeing her eyebrows back to a normal color, Linda Evangelista looking like a Botox-monster with Karl Lagerfeld, and Lily Collins still not realizing that she should be wearing dark, rich colors.

Cate Blanchett: “Shaving off my hair is so liberating… I’m thinking about doing it again”

These are some new photos of Cate Blanchett arriving at LAX yesterday. Thoughts on her outfit? Only Cate could pull this off, and even then… just barely. I’m not big into plaids, and I really don’t “get” why anyone would want to wear a plaid suit, but sure. On Cate, it works. It could also work on Tilda Swinton and Alan Cumming. And that’s about it.

Cate also covers the Summer issue of Gotham, but from what I can see from the interview, it’s all about her theater in Sydney. While I’m happy for Cate and her husband and their commitment to bringing quality theater to Australia, I find all of that stuff kind of tedious. Maybe I’m just sad because I miss seeing Cate in movies. In any case, you can read some excerpts of her Gotham piece here.

In addition to the Gotham article, Cate recently spoke to an Australian newspaper, and these quotes were much more interesting. I didn’t know she was just cast in Woody Allen’s new movie! That’s something. Also, she’s considering shaving her head again! She says, “Shaving off my hair is so liberating. I had to do it once for a film role, but I’ve done it periodically too. At school it was probably to rebel, but I cut my hair short a few years ago and I’m thinking about doing it again.” Have you ever seen Cate with a shaved head? She looks amazing.

Cate also says she hates working out: “I try to be healthy but I find exercise deathly dull. It tends to be easier to get outside in Australia, but the rain and floods have been atrocious in the past few years which limits things… Luckily, work keeps me fit and I’ve just been on stage with a show that’s very physical, which staves off the gym for a bit longer.” Eh… I believe her. I think she keeps active without being a gym rat. She seems like she has a really awesome metabolism too.

Oh, and she’s 43 years old. This is why she should be the poster girl for good skin care.

Gwyneth Paltrow forgets to flat-iron, goes wavy: doesn’t she look much better?

Gwyneth Paltrow did an event in London two days ago for the Clinton Foundation, and I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to get to the photos yesterday. There good pics – Gwyneth actually stopped for a moment outside the venue to smile and pose for the waiting paparazzi, which she rarely does. I do like her outfit – white slacks and some kind of intricate, lacy shell. Gwyneth does white and cream a lot, and sometimes the paleness washes her out, but not here. She looks toned and fit and tan.

But really, let’s talk what’s important. HER HAIR. I’ve been on a tear over the past year or so about Gwyneth’s hair. In my defense, Goop is kind of stuck in the 1990s, her hey-day. She still believes her go-to red carpet look should be “long blonde hair, flat-ironed, with a strict center part.” It no longer suits her face, and I think the style ages her and dates her. Look at how much better and younger she looks with her hair all wavy and fluffy and teased out a bit? Isn’t this such an improvement? She needs to adopt this style more often.

As for the event – President Clinton was there. Don’t worry. Goop is SO not his type. Let’s face it – you could show Bubba a dozen slim, elegant, icy blondes and he’s always going to go for the zaftig, bubbly brunette. I kind of want Bubba to meet Christina Hendricks. RIGHT? That needs to happen. Here’s more about the London event:

It was certainly an eclectic crowd at the Millennium Network Event held held in London last night. Gwyneth Paltrow brought Hollywood glamour to the bash and turned up in an all white outfit and a winning smile. The 39-year-old star donned a bright ensemble held at The Old Vic Tunnels in Waterloo. Gwyneth was seen waving to fans and photographers as she arrived at the event, showing off her trim figure in a white top with embroidery detail and a pair of tuxedo trousers. The mother-of-two had her hair teased into loose beach waves and had heavy eyeliner for the occasion.

Gwyneth was co-host of the event which was attended by Princess Beatrice and her boyfriend Dave Clark, Joan Collins and Lily Cole. The Millennium Network is part of the Clinton Foundation and former President Bill and his daughter Chelsea were there to support the event.

The fundraiser was arranged to help raise funds for the organisation which aims to improve global health, strengthen economies, promote healthier childhoods, and protect the environment. Guests, who paid upwards of £120 a ticket were treated to music, speeches and drinks as well as the chance to mingle with the familiar faces in attendance.

[From The Mail]

So she co-hosted! Good for Goop, deigning to mingle with the charitable peasantry. Oh, but she got to have some face time with Pres. Clinton and Princess Beatrice, I’m sure. I really want this week’s Goop newsletter to be all about Gwyneth finding a way to name-drop “Mr. William Jefferson Clinton.” Please, like Gwyneth would ever stoop to call him “Bill”. As if.

UPDATE: Hahaha, funny story – this event that Goop co-hosted is being called the “WORST PARTY EVER”.

Bill Clinton hasn’t had much luck on the party circuit. Another exclusive bash he’d hosted in London recently with tickets costing up to $1,600 was blasted as “the worst party ever” by guests who lined up for hours to get in. Marie Phillips, author of “Gods Behaving Badly,” wrote on Twitter, “WORST. PARTY. EVER. The queue was the highlight.” She described how celebrity guests including Gwyneth Paltrow and Will.i.am were led in while hundreds of others who paid for tickets waited outside near Waterloo Station. She added, “I haven’t seen so many posh angry people in a line since the shrimp ran out at Kate and Wills’ wedding.”

[Via Page Six]

Go ahead and just blame it all on Gwyneth. PEASANT REVOLT!!!

Nicole Kidman arrives in France, debuts new bangsy hairstyle: cute or awful?

These are photos of Nicole Kidman arriving in the South of France yesterday. Her new film, The Paperboy, debuts at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, and I’m expecting more photos of Nicole throughout the next few days. The Paperboy also stars Zac Efron, which… I mean… really? Nicole the Botox-Monster and Zac Efron, Permanent Jailbait (yes, I know he’s of age but his face always says “jailbait” to me). The film is being described in some quarters as an “explosive sexual thriller”. I tried reading the (spoiler-ridden) Wiki synopsis of the book, but I got kind of confused as to who does what. Oh, and the film also stars Matthew McConaughey and John Cusack. Maybe Nicole gets it on with one of them (hopefully?).

But for now, let’s talk about Nicole’s new look. And by that I mean BANGS. I’ve been confused before with some ladies’ bangs – I have a hard time figuring out if some women are wearing clip-on bangs or if they actually chopped their hair into some kind of traumatic situation. I don’t know what Nicole is doing, but I suspect this is her real hair and she really did give herself bangs. Now, Nicole has done bangs to varying degrees of success in the past – the best of which (in my opinion) was back when she was styling herself like Brigitte Bardot, and the bangs added to her kittenishness.

This current look, however, is kind of… not all that. I realize that she probably just got off the plane, etc. But how are these limp, flat-ironed-looking bangs somehow preferable to a simple bun or ponytail? And I don’t even want to talk about her lips anymore. Those slugs are so depressing. I swear, they are as bad as Lindsay Lohan’s.

Duchess Kate “styles herself single-handedly,” does her own shopping, hair & makeup

I’ve discussed this before, or maybe alluded to it in previous posts, but I really, really wonder what Duchess Kate and Prince William’s sex life is like. As much as I’d like to think they have a great physical bond, I tend to think both of them have the “sexiness” of wet noodles. William seems rather stiff (not in a good way) and more and more like his “prim” father. As for Kate… well, I do think she’s very pretty, and she’s good at working her assets (her hair, her legs, her buttons, her raccoon eyes). But does she really have any sex appeal? Not really. So I’m not really sure how People Magazine got to their “Sexy New Kate!” headline. Still, isn’t it kind of hilarious that Kate got a People Magazine cover simply because she – at long last – pulled her hair out of her face? That’s basically what just happened. Anyway, here’s People’s online excerpt.

Sure she’s still shopping at her favorite King’s Road boutiques, but the Duchess of Cambridge is making a marked move toward a sexier, more daring style – and she’s leaving quite an impression.

“High-level glamour is becoming more of the norm for Kate due to her role,” her stylist pal Nikki Pennie, editor-at-large of StyleHaul, says in the new issue of PEOPLE. “She is becoming more playful, putting her hair in gorgeous updos to complement certain dresses. She is clearly enjoying the process and becoming more confident.”

She’s doing it single-handedly, too. Kate does her own makeup and doesn’t have an official stylist, according to palace sources. She also doesn’t accept free gifts from designers and chooses her outfits herself.

“She is becoming more and more confident, which I think is exciting to see,” says Stewart Parvin, a couturier to the Queen. “They way she does her hair, the way she does her makeup is getting better and better and she has this new inner glow.”

For more on Kate’s sexy new styles, why she’s making bolder choices and photos of Princess Diana’s own fashion evolution, pick up this week’s PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

[From People]

“She’s doing it single-handedly, too. Kate does her own makeup and doesn’t have an official stylist, according to palace sources.” Bullsh-t, palace sources. Yes, I think Kate does her own makeup most of the time – which explains the eyeliner problem, which she’s obviously still in denial about. But she’s not styling herself alone. She has dressers and hair people. It’s not wrong for her to have those people, as I’ve always said. She’s a duchess/princess. She needs people around her, helping her. But don’t lie to us and promote this royal propaganda that she’s doing this all by herself because she’s so accessible.

Oh, and I still think that Kate only wore her hair up last Friday because The Mail – a long favorite for Middleton “exclusives” – called her out on the continuous college-girl sausage curls. But sure – wearing an elegant up-do for formal, evening occasions is now “sexy” and “new” (rather than completely reasonable and expected).

Duchess Kate wears teal Jenny Packham, actually pulls back her hair: amazing?

These are new photos of Duchess Kate and Prince William today (tonight) in London for the British Olympic Association Concert. Kate is wearing this Jenny Packham number which… hm… I don’t really dislike. I can’t say I’m in love with it, but I do think it’s mostly good. Great color, love the pleated skirt, love the fit. I feel like Kate didn’t want to show too much skin, and seeing as how Kate LOVES LACE (along with buttons), she asked Packham to cover the back in both lace and buttons. I wish we had access to photos of the back, but we don’t – go here to see it from behind. There are literally two dozen buttons on Kate’s back. Girl, sit down. This is a button intervention. UPDATE: BAM!! Buttons.

What else? The shoes are Jimmy Choo – I think they’re the same ones from earlier this week, when Kate wore the white Roland Mouret. Once again, the Duchess is without pantyhose!! OMG.

But really, we just need to talk about her hair. Can you even believe your eyes? Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, in an evening gown with a completely appropriate and elegant chignon?!?!?!? WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE REAL WAITY?!?!!? As I’ve said before, THIS is what she should be doing more of. Look at how beautiful she looks! I feel like we’re seeing her for the first time, this tall, elegant, regal duchess. And you know we have to praise her whenever she does something right – good job, girl. Keep it up. Literally! Keep your hair up and out of your face. You’re 30 years old, you don’t need a hairy security blanket.

Should Duchess Kate chop off her hair, or just learn how to style it?

The Daily Mail has an extensive article/opinion/essay today about Duchess Kate’s epic hair. The thesis seems to be “Kate should cut her hair and find a more mature, professional and elegant hairstyle.” Which is a bit rich, because The Mail – and several other UK papers and tabloids – have treated Kate’s hair like “The Curls That Saved A Nation” ever since Kate and William got engaged. You can read The Mail’s piece here, and here are some highlights:

No one can be in doubt that The Duchess of Cambridge has behaved impeccably in her first year of marriage to Prince William. Middle-class Middleton has crossed the class divide with grace — she’s courteous, elegant and never stops smiling, especially when her beloved husband is at her side. But is it just me or has something rather strange happened to Kate recently? It’s not her whittled-down waist. Nor is it her fashion sense, the love of High Street brands such as Reiss and LK Bennett, which earns her brownie points with the public and is turning her into a fashion icon.

No, it’s those famous locks, which seem to be getting longer by the day. Her Royal Highness is turning into her Royal Hairness with that dark, glossy mane. And I’m wondering if now, a year on from her wedding, it might just be time for the chop.

Now I’m not suggesting for a moment that Kate should be sporting a Mia Farrow crop or middle-aged bob. But the blanket of hair which arrives five minutes before she does has to go. Take last week, when Kate was greeting children at a charity event. Dressed in a dark blue tweed skirt and jacket, she looked stylish, professional and charmed everyone. Yet every time she bobbed down to talk to one of the youngsters, her face was completely obliterated by a cascade of dark curls. She would flick it out of the way, fondle and fiddle with it and I lost count of the number of times she had to tuck it behind her ear. At one point she looked like Cousin It from the Addams Family — all hair, no person. It was so distracting.

Even Princess Diana realised early on in public life that people wanted to see her face. She cut her droopy bangs and settled for a much more sophisticated short style. It worked, showcasing her enormous blue eyes and strong features.

So why is Kate clinging to her own over-long mane? Even she must have been infuriated by being overshadowed by her hair, because at her very next event she attended at the Imperial War Museum she’d put it in a back-teased half-up, half-down style. But even that style was more WAG than HRH. For goodness sake, she’s a member of the Royal Household now, not Cheryl Cole. Every time I see her fondling her hair I’m waiting for her to look into the cameras and coo: ‘Because I’m worth it.’

Kate’s mane has none of the elegance of Mary, the Crown Princess of Denmark, also a young woman of ordinary birth who has risen to the highest position in the land. On Kate and William’s trip to Copenhagen in the autumn, Mary’s shiny, shoulder-length brown hair looked far more elegant than the Duchess’s tumbling curls.

Surely an image-conscious young woman like Kate can’t be oblivious to this? Yet there are probably a number things stopping her cutting her hair. First there is a long Royal tradition of establishing a look, then keeping it. The Queen is the perfect example. Apart from the colour, her hair has hardly changed since she took the throne six decades ago. Less successfully, Princess Anne revels in the same unflattering hairstyle (and the same frocks) she wore half a century ago. It’s widely known that Camilla’s hair-stylers have tried for years to tease her out of the rather dated 1970s Farrah Fawcett flick she’s been sporting since she was a girl. Yet she always responds: ‘Charles loves my hair this way.’

[From The Mail]

The piece goes on to say that Kate might be clinging to her long hair and sausage curls because that’s how she looked when she met William, and he may prefer her hair like that too. Another theory: Kate is clinging to the youthful long hair as a way to cling to her youth. The writer goes on to admit that she wore long hair for years, and she recently got four inches taken off (it now comes to her shoulders) and now she loves it and feels and looks younger. Which is always what the short-hair brigade says!!!

Look, I have long hair too. My hair is probably about at Kate’s length. I love long hair. It suits me. I barely do anything to it (Indian genes!) and it looks fine. I don’t have an issue with Kate having long hair – at all. She had long hair in college and throughout her 20s, and this is the length that makes her comfortable, and so be it.

My problem isn’t with the length – it’s how she styles it. In her 20s, before the engagement, Kate wore her hair in a much simpler fashion – like, she probably just gave herself a blow-out, and her hair had a natural wave, and it was fine. But since she’s become a royal, Kate is obsessed with the giant, time-consuming sausage curls, and the look is pretty tired. I’m exhausted just thinking about how long it takes her to get ready. The Mail is right on that count – her hair is simply “too big” in general, and “too big” specifically for public functions. Plus, she does spend so much of her time in front of the cameras fiddling with her hair, stroking it like a security blanket in outing after outing. My thesis: Kate just needs to learn how to style her hair and mix it up according to the occasion. For black tie events, her hair should be up. For professional day outings, do it half-up so it’s not in her face. Try French twists and chignons. And don’t fall back into the “sausage curl” comfort zone every single day.

Princess Charlene of Monaco chopped off her hair: lovely or terrible?

Sometimes a haircut is just a haircut. Sometimes a haircut is about being dissatisfied with everything – your life, your marriage, your style, your own personal prison. Sometimes a haircut is about a trend, a season of shorter hair, the new must-have chop. Sometimes a haircut is about freedom, a way to say to the world, “I’m not the same girl I once was. Watch out, because I’m coming.” I don’t know what kind of haircut Princess Charlene of Monaco just got. Meaning, I don’t know what it says about her and her state of mind. Charlene debuted her new ‘do over the weekend, during the Monte Carlo Masters Tennis Tournament (Nadal was there – he won!).

I will say this – I don’t think Charlene has ever been a hair person. Over the years, as Albert’s girlfriend and then his wife, Charlene’s makeover have been gradual, but you got the feeling that no one really knew what to do with her hair. She usually kept it around her shoulders, and for some public appearances over the past year, her hair looked really ragged and unkempt. I tend to think her hair was probably pretty thin and fine and over-processed when everything started, and sometimes it’s just looked awful.

So… I actually like this cut. It’s boyish and sleek and very summery. It’s very Princess Diana circa 1996 – and that was a good year in Diana’s Hair. It feels lighter. And Charlene LOOKS lighter and happier with shorter hair too. I’ve said it before – for all of the fussing over Duchess Kate, trying to make her into the next Princess Diana, Charlene is a natural for the role. She’s depressed, she’s stuck in a rotten marriage, and she loves clothes. And now, more than ever, she really looks like Diana. Watch this space!

Halle Berry gets new curly extensions: cute or crazy looking?

Halle Berry's new hair
My first thought on seeing Halle Berry’s new curly wig/weave was that she must be wearing it for a role. I vaguely remembered that she had on a very frizzy, curly wig for a movie she was filming at some point, and assumed she might be doing reshoots. That was a film called Frankie & Alice, which premiered at the Cannes film festival and was only out in very limited release in late 2010, earning less than $11k at the box office. So I doubt this hair is for that specific long-over, almost forgotten, role. It could be for another film, but if so there’s not word yet. Halle has actually rocked two versions of this new hair in recent paparazzi photos, a longer two-tone look during the school pickup photo op on Friday, and a shorter darker style during a beach outing with “bonus dad” (my words, Halle probably just calls him Nahla’s dad), Oliver Martinez, and Nahla on Saturday. Here’s more on Halle’s new hair, thanks to E!, which reminds us she had this style before:

Halle Berry's new hair

C’mon, we all know that whether Halle Berry’s hair is long, short, straight or curly, she looks darn good because she’s Halle Berry.

But we did enjoy seeing a somewhat fresh new look from the gorgeous actress, who sported some tight-curl extensions while picking up daughter Nahla from school.

What do we mean by somewhat?

Berry debuted the new ‘do last night after a dinner date with fiancé Olivier Martinez at Italian restaurant II Piccolino in West Hollywood, but that’s not what we’re referring to.

The 45-year-old actress actually worked a similar hairstyle back in 2008, but it was slightly different, with a little more poof and no two-tone coloring.

We loved it then and we love it now.

[From E! Online]

Which version of Halle’s hair is your favorite? I think she looks best with the mid-level curls, in the beach photos. Maybe I’m getting confused because the wind is blowing it back, and/or humidity is making her hair curl up tighter. She possibly has the same hair in both of those photosets, but I doubt it. I like her with the short spiky hair too, it really highlights her face. She’s looking a little Botoxy lately, so perhaps a softer longer style is a better choice. Her hair reminds me of Rihanna’s two-tone curly hair, the style she had during her raucous Hawaiian vacation. If all I saw in those photos of Halle picking up Nahla were her hair and outfit I would have assumed she was Rihanna. Check out this picture in particular:

This is one way to get attention after her big admission that she’s engaged. It’s not a bad strategy, actually. At least she didn’t dip dye it.
