Ricky Martin’s new mustache & soul-patch: dodgy or charming?

Here are some new photos of Ricky Martin rocking some new facial hair at a Mac Viva Glam event in NYC last night. Nicki Minaj was there too, but I prefer to cover Ricky’s appearance. At first, I thought Ricky’s facial hair was kind of gross (especially that soul patch under his bottom lip), but as I was looking through the photos… he’s giving me an old-school Rudolph Valentino vibe. Or maybe Errol Flynn? He just needs to lose the soul patch. I suspect Ricky’s facial hair is for work, though – previews begin next month on the Broadway revival of Evita. Ricky has been cast as Che Guevara, a role originally played (on Broadway) by Mandy Patinkin. Have you ever heard the original Broadway recording with Mandy and Patti LaPone? It’s a revelation – and it makes you realize what a joke Madonna was in that role. She simply didn’t have the voice for it. Anyway, I like the idea of Ricky as Che. You can read more about the revival here.

In additional Ricky news, he has a new interview in Details Mag – you can read the full thing here. Here are some highlights:

What Ricky would do for love: “I canceled a show once to be with someone that I loved. I had one day. I thought, “You live in another country. I live in another country. This is incredible and I feel amazing.” My manager came up with some excuse. It was the most expensive date I’ve ever been on. But hey, that was a very beautiful day.”

Coming out later in life: “You know, when I hear about a boy or girl that comes out when they’re 15, I’m like, “You’re so lucky! Kudos.” I will give you a standing ovation. But there’s nothing you can do about it. You have to go through yesterday to be who you are today.”

Feeling “blessed to be who I am.”: “Well, I don’t know who your God is, but my God doesn’t make mistakes.”

Ricky sang at George W. Bush’s inauguration in 2001, but later at a concert flipped the bird while singing about him: “They gave me the opportunity to represent the Latin community in the inauguration. It was beyond politics. The next day I was in 85 newspapers around the world—front page. A lot of people said, “Would you take a picture with him again?” I said, “Well, he has to do a lot about human trafficking in order for that to happen.” Now I’d say he has to do a lot about human trafficking and the LGBT community.”

Ricky on marriage equality: “I don’t want to blame the government. I think there’s a stolen faith—an interpretation of what God “says.” That’s your God—I have my God. It’s about civil rights. I’m not telling you what to believe. I wish people understood that love manifests in different ways. Allow me to have my life and I won’t mess with yours. That’s when I struggle and get angry and punch the table. And then I talk. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.””

The rumor that he’s renting a $32,000-a-month apartment: “Well, I don’t need anything to live, to be honest. Give me a mattress or a futon on the floor and I’ll be the happiest camper. But then all of a sudden, from one futon I need five bedrooms. There’s me. My kids have a room. The nanny has a room. I’m very lucky to say that my mom, she’s traveling with me and she’s helping me to raise my kids. And then the kids start going to school next week.”

Getting his kids into pre-K in Manhattan: “You have no idea. A lot of people told me about this, and I didn’t know until I actually embarked on the mission. There are documentaries on this. I had to write an essay about my kids. This is pre-K. This is not college. But I understand that’s how it goes. I sat in front of my computer and I opened my heart. Apparently we’re in.”

[From Details]

There’s a lot more in that interview, Ricky talks about his partner of four years and his workouts and stuff. He even talks about Menudo! Oh, well. I wish I could see him play Che! I bet he’ll be really great in that role.

Thandie Newton at the ‘Good Deeds’ premiere: high-fashion or busted?

Thandie Newton thinks she’s got this. And she couldn’t be more wrong. These are some photos from last night’s premiere of Good Deeds, Tyler Perry’s latest film. Tyler stars in the film about a businessman who befriends a single mother (Thandie Newton) who works in his office’s cleaning crew. And I think Tyler’s character is married to Gabrielle Union. It doesn’t seem like a “Madea” type affair, and it’s probably one of Tyler’s attempts at a more straight-laced drama (like The Family That Preys). Here’s the trailer:

(Eddie Cibrian is in it?!!?)

Anyway, Thandie wore Temperley London – I actually like the dress. It’s the hair that I don’t understand. Is this high-fashion? Am I too much of a peasant to “understand” this hairstyle? That’s what it feels like. That’s Thandie’s vibe – the way she walks the red carpet, the way she carries herself – she reminds me of Goop. But I’m biased. I’ve never liked her. And I can’t believe Tyler Perry cast her as a working-class single mother either – that would be like casting Gwyneth Paltrow in that kind of role, right? Some actresses simply can’t play anything but elitist bitches.

I’m also including photos of Gabrielle Union and Tyler. Gaby looks AWESOME. That girl is ageless.

Kelly Osbourne tried gray hair because when she’s 30 she’ll be too old for it

I started going gray when I was in my early 20s. That’s when I discovered the many wonderful products Clairol puts out, some of which have since been retired, with my red-blonde shades the first to go. (Damn you, Clairol, for discontinuing Hydrience! Nice ‘N Easy lives up to its name, though.) I understand why women chose not to dye their hair, and to embrace their natural color. My mom is completely gray and she rocks it. It makes no sense to me that a younger woman would purposely dye their hair gray, though, but Kelly Osbourne seems to have done it. Her purplish gray and then all gray color looked like a home dye fail and correction rather than a deliberate attempt at avant garde color. She gave some convoluted reasoning on The Talk about how she’ll be too old at 30 to try different hair colors.

Kelly recently appeared on The Talk with her grey hair, and was naturally asked why she’d chosen to dye her hair such an “unfavorable” color.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I’ve always wanted to be young and have grey hair. To me, I’m 27, I’ve got three years left, the way I look at it, to have fun with it, because once you’re 30, you look like a right idiot walking around with like rainbow, bright color hair and all different things like that.”

[Quotes from The Talk via Evil Beet]

Kelly just manages to insult people whenever she opens her mouth. I find her almost as annoying as her mom, who by the way has been trying to work a Ronald McDonald haircolor for at least the past 10 years. Was that quip about being too old for rainbow hair a subtle dig at her mom? I doubt it, but I’m secretly hoping Sharon takes it the wrong way and starts feuding with Kelly. As bitchy as it sounds, it would be fun to see them start fighting with each other instead of turning their forces outward on whomever dares to speak out against either of them.

Somewhere, Christina Aguilera is stumbling hungover out of bed and slurring about how she never had such ugly hair as Kelly.

Willow Smith, 11, shaved her head and put photos online: did she get permission?

My son is in first grade and his best friend is trying to get him to join Facebook so they can play games together. I said “no” and I plan to continue to keep saying that until he’s in junior high at least, at which point there will probably be a ton more social networking apps and sites to freak me out. This is what comes to mind for me when I saw this self portrait of Willow Smith that she posted to “Who Say” after she shaved her head. Does someone oversee her online activities, and did they ok her posting this? She seems to be taking pictures of herself and putting them up without asking an adult, but I don’t know that for sure.

I think kids should be able to pick out their clothes and hairstyles, within reason, although we’ve heard that Willow has a stylist. When I was in seventh grade, only slightly older than Willow, I shaved half my head and to my parents’ credit they didn’t freak out and just went with it. I don’t think kids should be able to independently use social networking apps without supervision, though. This is very young to be posting photos online, but I keep telling my kid that the Internet was only just coming out when I was in college. It’s a different world out there, plus Willow’s very privileged jet-setting world is much different than other little kids. She’s a pop star! Here’s more on her new look. She can’t “whip her hair” anymore.

Goodness knows what her superstar father Will Smith will make of his daughters outrageous new look.

But without her long locks she certainly looks more like her father Will than her mother Jada Pinkett Smith.

The youngster also decided to show off her love of ballet by posting further pictures on WhoSay, which styles itself as a social network service for VIPs and celebrities.

She posed for a picture where she sat on a chair in a dance studio, while in another she shows off her golden ballet shoes.

[From Daily Mail]

As a side note, please don’t make any mean comments about Willow’s appearance. She may look a lot like her dad that’s true, but try to remember that she’s 11.

In other news about Willow that’s kind of sad, Star Magazine has a cover story this week that her parents Will and Jada have split up and are on separate coasts with each of their kids. This is right on the cover, so chances are high that the kids have seen it. We’ve heard for some time that Will and Jada are having trouble:

With Jaden, 13, currently living in Philadelphia with Will and Willow, 11, living mainly in L.A. with Jada – almost 3,000 miles apart – it’s only a matter of time until the split is official. And sources say the children are already devastated about being a family divided.

“It’s always a shame when divorce splits up families,” Jada’s great aunt Estelle Pinkett tells Star. Indeed, as Will and Jada divide their assets and get used to living apart, one source says, “the kids are really suffering.

“They haven’t spent any time as a whole family in months,” the source continues, “and it’s not going to happen anytime soon – if ever again.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition, February 13, 2012]

Will is in Philadelphia to shoot a movie, After Earth directed by M. Night Shamalan, and Star reminds us that Willow is going on tour in May. So it sounds Will and Jada are necessarily apart for work and are each trying to single parent one of their kids. Still, maybe Willow is acting out by shaving her head. It seems pretty normal to me. Going on tour at 11 isn’t normal though. I wish Will and Jada would try and shield their kids from fame instead of putting them in the family business.

Here’s Willow at a BET event on 1-14-12. She looks so pretty in that yellow dress. She’s also shown on 12-13-11. Credit: WENN.com

Rihanna bleaches her hair, adds a blonde weave: busted or cute?

It’s been a while since Rihanna has been blonde, right? I can’t keep up with this stuff. I think she was last blonde when she wore an unfortunate wiglet for her Armani campaign. Well, she’s done it again, only this time she’s doing some kind of 1980s hair-band style. Rihanna began tweeting behind-the-scenes photos of her Elle Magazine shoot (she’s getting an Elle cover? Meh.) in which they bleached her hair and gave her extensions. After the Elle shoot, Rihanna went to the Roxbury – I’m including a few photos from her outing, in which she wore that fug orange sweater and thigh-high leather boots.

Rihanna claimed her new look is “stripperish” but I just think it’s flat-out ugly. I never understand why Rihanna does this to herself, or why she allows this to be done to her. I mean, I guess I understand the idea of “She’s 23, she’s experimenting with her look, she’s having fun.” But most of this stuff simply doesn’t look GOOD. I hated the pink-Kool-Aid phase, and this blonde-rocker look might be even worse. Dear Rihanna: You’re very pretty but please STOP.

Life & Style: Brad Pitt is concerned Shiloh will be bullied for her short haircut

I don’t even know. Life & Style has a sketchy history with their cover stories about Angelina Jolie and Shiloh. It began in 2010, when Shiloh got her little bob haircut and everyone freaked out because bob haircuts = lesbianism, obviously. And God knows, little girls should ONLY have long hair. There was significant backlash against Life & Style for basically declaring that Shiloh was a lesbian (because of her hair), but that didn’t stop the tabloid from running several more covers in the same vein, meaning that Shiloh has been “manipulated” into her tomboy lifestyle by her EVIL, horrible mother, Angelina. And now this – photos came out a few days ago of Angelina and the kids at the Farmer’s Market – see them here. Shiloh was working a new, shorter haircut. Which, obviously, is the direct result of Angelina’s awful parenting, which has obviously caused Shiloh’s lesbianism. Of course.

Shiloh shows no signs of changing her obsession with being a little boy and while Angeline thinks it’s great, is Brad worried about bullying?

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt showed off the cut while out with her siblings and mother, Angelina Jolie, on January 22. In the August issue of Vanity Fair, Angelina explains the short style, saying, “She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.”

While Angelina seems all for the look, Life & Style reports that sources say Brad Pitt is concerned that other children will tease Shiloh. Poor Brad, it must be so hard for a parent to have to be concerned about his child being bullied!

[From Hollywood Life]

Yes, Brad is so concerned! He’s the good parent, you see. And when he finally leaves Angelina, he’ll bring Shiloh to Jennifer Aniston, and Aniston will magically convince Shiloh to wear her hair longer, and instantly, Shiloh will no longer be a lesbian! HUZZAH.

Seriously, though – LEAVE SHAX ALONE. She’s doing her own thing, Montenegro Style. The kid has an excess of personality, which speaks to her parents creating an environment in which their kids’ individuality can flourish.

Cameron Diaz’s pinned back look: elegant and tweaked or naturally lovely? (update)

I’m excited that we have new photos of lap-hopping Cameron Diaz, as I’ve been waiting to comment on her new look. (Kaiser is sick today or she would definitely be covering this.) We saw Cameron premiere her new shaggy crop-cut hair at the Golden Globes parties, where she was seen macking all over attached Diddy and generally looking a mess. I didn’t like her new look, which also seemed to include some new boobies. It’s like she got a new hairstyle to try to distract us from her recent implants, which are tasteful and not too big but still noticeable. (It’s also possible she had fat transfer done to her breasts. I’ve been hearing about that a lot lately and the result is the same kind of subtle difference that we’ve seen in Cameron.)

Cameron was spotted at Paris Fashion Week this morning in this stunning A-line black checked dress paired with a simple skinny belt and elegant jacket. I love her gladiator shoes too. Cameron looks amazing with her hair pulled back and pinned up like that. She looks a little “refreshed” too, as if she’s had a smidgen of something done but not too much. (Just like her new boobs.) It could just be her perfectly applied makeup though. She looks lovely I have to say. The shape of that dress is slightly unflattering, but the belt cinches it in. I really love this look on her. Cameron looks good and she knows it. (Update: Cam wore this to the Dior show, so it’s safe to assume she’s in Dior.)

Yesterday Cameron was at the Versace show with Diane Kruger. (Photos are below.) She wore her hair in a kind of poof style that isn’t as pretty as it is here. This style is more softening for her.

Can you imagine getting paid and having clothes lent to you to show up at events like this? You would have people like us picking apart your every move, but Cameron doesn’t seem to care. I admire that about her. The downside is that she ends up with guys like A-Rod and Diddy.

Update: Oh we do have those photos of Cameron outside the Versace show yesterday. Compare her slightly trashy but fashion-forward look in Versace to how classic and pretty she looks above. She’s also looking tweaked to me in these photos. Her legs are so killer.

Miley Cyrus’ new cropped haircut: cute or unflattering?

Miley Cyrus stepped out over the weekend with a new cropped hairdo. She was also wearing a white t-shirt without a bra, which is all too common for her. Miley should invest in some cami tops with built in bras if it’s such a problem for her to harness her girls. At least she had on a flannel shirt for coverage. Anyway Miley tweeted that she got a hair cut and had about five inches chopped off. It looks like she’s freshened up the color too, but that might just be the effect of the haircut, as I’ve heard hairdressers talk about how shorter hair can make your haircolor look different.

Miley Cyrus may have left her bra at home, but there was a good reason for it — she was preoccupied with her brand-new haircut!

On Friday, the underwear-less star, who sported a white T-shirt underneath an unbuttoned flannel and denim cut-off shorts, met up with some friends at the Los Angeles eatery Wokcano, while debuting her freshly cropped off hair.

“Just got a hurrrr cut,” the 19-year-old tweeted that day.

“I didn’t do anything to crazy. But I did take 5 inches off!” she later added, responding to a fan via Twitter.

Cyrus was last spotted with her longer locks when she stepped out with her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards, where she wowed in a David Koma dress, Neil Lane jewelry, Jimmu Choo heels and a Marchesa clutch.

Hemsworth, who turned 22 on January 13, is the proud owner of a new puppy, a gift from Cyrus herself.

“Meet Ziggy,” the former Disney starlet wrote beneath an adorable snapshot of her man’s pet, which she shared via Twitter January 12.

[From US Weekly]

I’m thinking that Miley also removed some hair extensions, similar to how Aniston copped to getting extensions taken out for her crop cut. I heard Miley admit in an interview a couple of years ago that she had hair extensions, but back then she was sporting much longer, curlier (and darker) hair. So does she look cute with her new hair? She definitely does if you ignore her fug 90s outfit completely, and she probably feels great after losing a little weight recently. (That she didn’t need to lose.) I have to say that I liked her hair longer, similar to how I liked Aniston’s hair best when it was long and blown out. It’s easier to style short hair, but I find longer hair prettier and more flattering. I hate getting mine cut, though, so I’m biased.

Also, I have to say something about the new puppy that Miley gifted her on-again boyfriend, Liam. Here he is, completely adorable and sweet. [via Miley's Twitter] I don’t know about dog breeds and just spent too much time trying to figure out what kind of pup this is. (Is he/she a Boxer or a mixed breed?) It seems like Miley gets puppies often though. In August of last year she just got two huskies and earlier in the year she was seen toting around another tiny dog. She clearly loves dogs and it shows.

Jude Law is finally owning his receding hairline/baldness: sexy or busted?

I’ve been following and covering Jude Law’s mysterious hairline for several years now. I feel bad for the guy, because when he was in his 20s, he was so impossibly beautiful, and I think his hair situation bothers him. His hairline really started to go wonky… oh, maybe five or six years ago? And that’s when some speculate that Jude began trying out hairplugs, with some mixed results that we detailed over the years. Maybe the plugs didn’t take in the long run, or maybe Jude was just tired of living with his hair sham, because these are new photos of a newly balding Jude in Paris yesterday, where he was promoting Sherlock Holmes with Guy Richie. I’m completely in favor of dudes shaving their heads when they start to go bald, so I approve of this look for Jude. It makes him look older, sure. But I’d rather see a (formerly pretty) dude own his hairline.

He’s been covering up with his trademark beanie cap for months. And finally, we are able to see why. Jude Law showed up for the Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows premiere in Paris last night displaying what looked like drastic hair loss.

Having refused to bare his head for months, even when pressed during interviews, Jude looked perfectly relaxed doing so last night, grinning alongside Sherlock director Guy Ritchie.

Jude meanwhile was only too happy to mingle with the throng of excited fans who turned up to see him, even appearing to suggest a photo opportunity with some. The 38-year-old has not been seen without a cap, beanie or smart hat since October, even sporting the look on the red carpet.

The award winning actor was quizzed on his unusual headgear on Graham Norton’s chat show in December. Despite audience chants of ‘off, off’ the father-of-four refused to remove his woolly hat, claiming he had a terrible hairstyle which he has to keep for his latest film role.

‘I’ve been scalped for my new film and I’ve got had the most heinous hair cut you have ever seen,’ he explained. ‘You’ll see it in a cinema next year.’

The actor has previously denied ever taking measures to tackle his receding hairline, following speculation that he has resorted to implants.

[From The Mail]

Yeah, I would still hit it. I can feel Jude impregnating me with his eyes as we speak. Sure, he was beautiful when he was 25 – WHO WASN’T?!?! I’d much rather knock boots with a dude who is in a place in his life where he just accepts that he’s not longer “the pretty boy.”

Beyonce had an extra-special birthin’ weave made for the delivery of her baby

I really am surprised that Beyonce hasn’t given birth (“given birth”) this week. Of course, the day isn’t over, and she could totally pull a Perry-Brand and announce the miraculous birth late today, a Friday afternoon or evening. Is that Bey’s style though? No, she wants to dominate the news, and announcing something late on a Friday just doesn’t feel domination-worthy. I also have a theory that we haven’t heard anything about Bey this week because there’s only so much magic that can be done with pillows, you know? If Beyonce is seen, she needs to look ready to pop at any moment. And that ain’t happening.

In Touch has a great/hilarious/ridiculous story about Beyonce’s other preparations for the birth. She and Jay have apparently booked a special “luxury birthing suite” which includes a private kitchen. Which I think it gross. Why are you thinking about food when you’re supposed to be birthin’ a baby? Placenta and paella don’t mix. But the best part of the story is totally the bit about the birthin’ weave.

Leave it to Beyonce to put the glamour in giving birth. In preparation for the arrival of her first child, Beyonce and Jay-Z have booked a private luxury birthing suite at New York’s St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, complete with a flat-screen TV and a private kitchen where gourmet meals can be prepared for the picky pair.

According to an insider, Beyonce meticulously planned out every detail just as she would one of her onstage spectaculars – even having a hairpiece designed just for the delivery!

“She wanted to look spectacular for her biggest performance ever,” the insider says.

[From In Touch Weekly, print edition]

Is it wrong that I totally believe that? Yes, I believe that Beyonce had a special weave made just for the birth of her child. She will wear this special weave when she picks the baby up from the surrogate, I guess. Anyway, I have my fingers crossed that Bey keeps her legs crossed (and the surrogate does the same) until Monday. Gift us with a baby during regular business hours, Oh Great and Powerful Beysus!
