Patrick Dempsey in yet another medical hero scene

This is the second story from The National Enquirer’s Mike Walker in which Patrick Dempsey stars at the hero of a supposed real-life medical drama, so take it for what it is. In October he was said to have saved a Grey’s Anatomy crewmember who was suffering from a blood clot by calling 911 after he noticed that the guy looked sick.

Supposedly some kids were engaging in a bizarre practice I’ve never heard of, in which they let the car roll while dancing beside or on it. (I doubted anyone would actually do this, but there’s a clip on YouTube so at least some idiot has tried it.) A kid predictably had his foot run over, and Depsey, who was randomly driving by and witnessed the dumbass scene, stayed with him and called 911.

Shocking moment for PATRICK DEMPSEY, who slowed down on a Hollywood street when he spotted teenagers playing that exciting new game, Ghost Riding the Whip – in which driver and passengers get out of a car while it’s still idling slowly down the street and dance beside it. Suddenly … YEEEOW!…one dancing punk got too close to the tires – and the car ran over his foot! The “Grey’s Anatomy” doc pulled over to help, and made a medical decision by calling 911…STAT! The teens were stunned to find Dr. McDreamy suddenly in their midst, but he told them he’s not a doctor – he just plays one on TV. He stayed with the kid until the ambulance arrived – and real medics diagnosed a broken foot.

If I saw this in a regular newspaper I might believe it, but since it’s the second hero story from Mike Walker about Patrick Dempsey I’m thinking it’s either fabricated PR or grossly exaggerated. How often do people pull this stupid Ghostriding the Whip stunt and have you guys ever heard of it before?

Leonardo DiCaprio saves his costar from a real gunman!

Leonardo DiCaprio was out to lunch in Africa with Djimon Hounsou, his costar in the upcoming film “Blood Diamond.” Djimon Hounsou is the hot guy who starred in “Amistad” and played the tormented artist in “In America.” A man approached Hounsou with a gun and seemed to want to shoot him for no reason. Dicaprio stepped in front of the shooter, causing him to run away! Leo earns even more points by refusing to talk about the incident, which only adds to the mystique:

Hounsou remains puzzled as to why the gunman took exception to him while he was filming the new action film in Mozambique, but he’s sure he’d be wounded or dead if it wasn’t for the heroics of DiCaprio.

He explains, “He stood in the way of somebody who was trying to shoot me.”

“We went to eat somewhere and apparently somebody was threatening to kill me there. Leo said, ‘Well, you’re gonna have to go through me.’”

That was enough to make the gunman think twice and he fled the scene, leading a grateful Hounsou pouring praise on his pal.

Modest DiCaprio has refused to even discuss the matter during promotional interviews for the new film. He will only talk about his great friendship with Hounsou.

He explains, “We became like brothers on this movie… We were together for six months.”

Leo, one of People’s sexiest men alive, is also donating to help a South African orphanage where he met a girl who touched his heart. He says he wants to help her and the other orphans but that “he’s not married” and does not intend to have children of his own at this point.

Thanks to Viv for sending me this article.

Dr. McDreamy Patrick Dempsey saves a guy’s life IRL

Patrick Dempsey noticed that a Grey’s Anatomy crewmember looked pale, and he asked him what was wrong. The man said that he felt dizzy, but that he would be ok shortly. Dempsey told him that he was calling an ambulance right away, and it’s a good thing, because the guy had a life-threatening blood clot in his leg!

CALLING DR. McDREAMY! Just days before PATRICK DEMPSEY got attacked and choked by costar ISAIAH “Dr. McJealous” WASHINGTON on the “Grey’s Anatomy” set, Dempsey spotted a crewmember hanging onto a pole, looking white as a doc’s smock! “What’s wrong?” he asked – and when the guy admitted he was dizzy and couldn’t feel his legs, the star yelled to a staffer: “Call an ambulance… NOW!” The stricken guy protested, but Dempsey and a crewmember carried him to a lounge chair. Paramedics arrived swiftly, took vital signs… and hustled him to Emergency. Turns out he was seriously ill, suffering from a blood clot in his leg that could have traveled and killed him if he hadn’t gotten fast treatment. (Good work, McDreamy! And McJealous, remember your physicians’ oath: “First… do no harm, dammit!”)

That must be the “deep vein thrombosis” that you hear so much about when you’re dealing with all the other crap that goes along with flying commercial.

Not only does Dempsey come to the defense of his costars - he saves lives with his quick thinking!

Dempsey’s costar T.R. Knight has come out as a proud gay man, much to the dismay of women everywhere. It is thought that the of story Isaiah Washington choking Dempsey and calling another cast member a “faggot” prompted him to come out.

Matt Damon and his wife Luciana enjoy a rare night out

Matt Damon and his wife, former bartender Luciana Barroso, enjoyed a rare date night out at celebrity hotspot Hyde last week. They were photographed entering and leaving the club, and Matt looks like he’s enjoying himself. The two have been photographed only occasionally since the birth of their daughter, Isabella, three months ago. Luciana also has an eight year-old daughter, Alexia, from her last marriage.

The International Herald Tribune has an excellent article about Damon’s career. They say he’s a quiet, unassuming actor who blends so well into a film that it’s hard to tell he’s acting. That sounds like a high compliment to me. They also say he challenged Harvey Weinstein over his choice of a director for “Good Will Hunting,” most likely saving the gem of a film:

Matt Damon does what few stars with his kind of billing do: he disappears. A character actor who rates multimillion-dollar paychecks, he has an Oscar, a lucrative blockbuster franchise, a wife you have probably never heard of and a résumé that includes Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Soderbergh. This autumn he stars in films from Martin Scorsese (”The Departed”) and Robert De Niro (”The Good Shepherd”), for a reunion by proxy for the two directors. In the first Damon plays a gangster who goes under cover as a cop; in the second he plays a Yale graduate present at the birth of the CIA.

Damon tends to win respect, not swoons, from film critics, but great directors can’t stay away. His boyish looks have certainly helped him land roles, and remain essential to his appeal even at 35. But it is his ability to recede into a film while also being fully present, a recessed intensity, that distinguishes how he holds the screen. When Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, two other character actors masquerading as stars, take the screen, they tend to make noise. Their beauty creates its own distractions, and their forays into brooding intensity set off flares. Damon eases into roles so quietly you rarely see him acting.

It’s the type of quiet that can be mistaken for no acting at all and that, much like his trademark smile, can prove deceptive…

It’s this Janus-like quality - the boy next door who turns out to be the killer, the thief and the spy among us - that makes Damon a consistently surprising screen presence…

There’s a juicy story about the making of “Good Will Hunting” in Peter Biskind’s history of American independent film, “Down and Dirty Pictures.” In their attempt to make the film and in their dealings with Miramax’s Harvey Weinstein, who finally got the project off the page and into theaters, Damon comes across as tough, if not as savvy about money as Affleck. In one memorable exchange, Damon faced down Weinstein over who would direct. The writers wanted Gus Van Sant. Weinstein had offered the film to Chris Columbus, then best known for “Home Alone.” Damon protested Weinstein’s choice and, in between expletives, the executive shouted: “How … dare you talk to me like that? You’re a nobody!” “I’m a nobody,” Damon said, “but I’m a nobody with director approval.”

Damon has also lent his celebrity to Bono’s “One” charity to bring awareness to addressing poverty in Africa. He says he’s not doing it for the recognition, and emphasizes that there are easy ways that everyday people can help solve poverty in our lifetime.

Swoon - he’s one of my favorite actors.

Here are Damon and Luciana on their date night out. [via]

Buy Matthew McConaughey’s Stingray Convertible on eBay

Hero Matthew McConaughey, who routinely saves kittens, children, and swooning middle-aged women from the brink of death, is auctioning off his 1971 Corvette Stingray Convertible on eBay to benefit Oprah’s Angel Network charity. Notice how all the “G”s are removed from the ends of words in the item description to make McConaughey’s quotes more believable. It looks like a search and replace job:

“I’ve gone to Mexico & back in it, driven across Texas in it…lotta late night drives…take off at midnight and get on the open highway with the top down…top was very seldom up in my drives. Enough room in the trunk for one persons back pack, or two for real light travel.”

“I admire and enjoy this car, but it’s a luxury that I’m willin to relinquish at this point because I am fortunate enough to have everythin I need, and the sale of it will help so many with the necessities in life…part of stayin connected with an on-goin cause to help those in need for the long term…besides, I can’t pull my Airstream with it!”

[via]

With so many hours of drive time, the car’s going to have that authentic McConaughey smell that even the most thorough detailing job won’t be able to eliminate.

Here are pictures of the car from eBay and some photos of McConaughey arriving at the ESPY awards on July 12th. [via] He looks like he went biking with Lance and Jake beforehand. If you can’t grow a full beard, don’t bother.

Matthew McConaughey is a hero

Matthew McConaughey sometimes lives in an airstream trailer, doesn’t use deodorant, and has been involved in several well-documented incidents of heroism.

  • He Saved a cat from being burned alive by cruel children.
  • He rescued a baby from a coyote.
  • He also gave mouth to mouth resuscitation to a woman who had fainted, and then called her afterwards on her 50th birthday.

In this latest story of McConaughey’s giving spirit, he hung out with a bunch of young people with cerebral palsy and was kind, patient and cool with them. OMG I love him!:

Last week, a class of disabled children from Laurel Ridge Elementary School in Decatur (GA) were enjoying a picnic at Stone Mountain Park when McConaughey jogged past. When he saw the kids, he stopped by to chat with the students and their teachers.

According to Laurel Ridge Elementary principal Mark Gordon, McConaughey told them he has a relative with cerebral palsy and was able to “talk” with the kids who rely on communication devices.

We’re told that before resuming his run, the actor even helped to load the school’s coolers back on board the bus.

Noted Gordon in an e-mail: “The teachers really enjoyed it!”

That’s awesome and what a shame that McConaughey is single now. ;)

Mark Wahlberg almost boarded tragic 9/11 flight

Mark Wahlberg, aka Marky Mark, almost was on one of the 9/11 flights that were hijacked on that tragic day. He had a flight booked, but changed his mind and flew out of Toronto instead. Wikipedia says that he rebooked the flight just a day before - on September 10th. He said the decision still haunts him:

Could Mark Wahlberg and his entourage have stopped the 9/11 hijackers? The actor says he and some buddies booked seats on one of the flights from Boston to L.A. that tragic day, but later decided to depart from Toronto. “We certainly would have tried to do something [to fight],” the brawny “Invincible” star tells Webster Hall’s Baird Jones. “I’ve had probably over 50 dreams about it.”

It’s a good thing that he changed his mind about his travel plans. Chances are he and his friends would have died too.

Mark has two children with his girlfriend, model Rhea Durham. They have a daughter, Ella Rae, born on September 2, 2003, and a son, Michael, born on March 21, 2006.

The header picture is recent. Sure he’s gained some weight, but he’s a dad now and he can lose it again. Picture [via]

    Gwyneth Paltrow’s secret heartache

Gwyneth Paltrow’s dad, Bruce Paltrow, died of cancer in October, 2002. The actress was heartbroken at the loss of her father, but soon found some comfort in the arms of her future husband, Chris Martin. It recently came out that Bruce was suffering in his final months, and couldn’t swallow to drink or eat while he was directing the film “Duets,” which starred Gwyneth. She kept her brave father’s condition a secret, as he did not want to worry the cast or crew:

“He flew to Vancouver to direct Duets, but his salivary glands were shot, a side effect of the radiation. He couldn’t swallow easily, he couldn’t eat. He had a feeding tube inserted in his stomach.”

But the dedicated dad “did not want people to know the pain he was in… It was just excruciating.”

Danner also said that her late husband bravely tried to advise other cancer sufferers in the months before he lost his life. Danner says, “The doctors loved him. He would speak to patients across the country about what to expect. He became a very good campaigner for stopping smoking.”

“When he saw friends smoking, he would show them his big scar and say, ‘You want to look like this in 20 years?’”

That’s sad news about her father and we’ll to refrain from making fun of the pretentious actress in this post.

Paltrow gave birth to her second child, a boy named Mortimer Moses, two weeks ago, and looks like she’s going out for a pedicure in these pictures taken yesterday in New York.

Angelina Jolie is buying a whole country

Proving that her charity knows no bounds and is on a different level entirely than the lame attempts by her boyfriend to save the world, Angelina Jolie is planning to buy a country in Dubai and set it up for African refugees. The Bosh reports:

The ‘Tomb Raider’ star, who is currently pregnant with boyfriend Brad Pitt’s child, is buying Richard Branson’s man-made version of Ethiopia, located in Dubai. The British business tycoon is having 300 country-shaped luxury island developments built, to form a map of the world.

And the 55-year-old entrepreneur is selling parts of the ‘world’ to anyone rich enough to afford them. The 30-year-old actress, who is due to give birth early in May, is reportedly planning to turn her new purchase into a fair-trade paradise for hundreds of Africans.

A source said: “Angelina has been obsessed with Ethiopia ever since she adopted her second child Zahara from there. Her friends are very jealous of her purchase.”

Jolie will also take out an ad in USA Today next week begging for the US to intervene in the long-standing genocide in The Sudan:

Jolie tells People magazine, “I chose to take out this ad because when Congress returns from recess (24APR06), they have the chance to fully fund peacekeepers in Darfur. “The situation in Darfur has been going on far too long. It’s only getting worse. “Reports are pouring in about mass atrocities including children getting raped and killed. “If people are aware of the facts, I believe many will be driven to action.”

The US could have stepped in and stopped the violence in the Sudan long ago, but the neocons decided they wanted the oil in Iraq and choose to invent a genocide over there. Saddam Hussein may have gassed Kurds in the 80s, but US news outlets downplayed the event at the time. Now an actual genocide has been happening in The Sudan for about three years and no one is doing a thing about it. Saving hundreds of thousands of lives would have cost a fraction of the total of the Iraq war, but no one has given it any attention. Ironically that’s why we pay attention to celebrities. It’s easier than dealing with the tragedy and hypocrisy of the real world, and we’re just as guilty as anyone.

Brad is gearing up his own philanthropic efforts. He will join “environmental group Global Green USA to sponsor a competition that will choose architects to rebuild parts of hurricane-devastated New Orleans.”

Back to our regularly scheduled gossip.

Matthew McConaughey saves a cat from being burned alive!

Matthew McConaughey pulled his car over and stopped a bunch of kids from setting a cat on fire in California. He saved the poor cat and gave the kids a verbal lashing:

The 36-year-old was driving past a group of kids in Sherman Oaks, California, and saw they’d doused the poor feline with hairspray and were trying to light it. He screeched to a halt, grabbed the cat and hairspray, yelled at the kids and stormed off to an animal shelter. “He was so angry he went on about it for days afterwards,” says a pal.

As if being hot wasn’t enough, this is not the first time McConaughey has acted the hero. He scared off a coyote from a toddler last year, and once performed mouth-to-mouth resusitation on a woman who had fainted.

McConaughy’s two year relationship with Penelope Cruz may be in trouble. The two are said to have possibly split after spending a good deal of time apart.
