Kylie Minogue to stage a series of comeback concerts in Melbourne

Australian singer Kylie Minogue will be playing a series of comeback concerts in her hometown of Melbourne. Minogue has headed back to the studio and plans to play live after having battled breast cancer last year:

The pop princess - who is recovering after battling breast cancer for the last year - is planning a string of shows at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena in November.

A source is quoted in Britain’s The People newspaper as saying: “She insists on Melbourne for her family, friends and home town supporters.

“And her people have already pencilled in the dates in November - the height of summer Down Under - to guarantee a booking.”

The singer - who was forced to cancel several dates of her sell-out ‘Showgirl’ world tour after she was diagnosed with the disease last May - is already practicing for the concerts.

Manager Terry Blamey said Kylie, who got the all-clear from cancer four months ago, is “going to come back better than ever”.

Meanwhile, the star is also back in the recording studio.

The 37-year-old said: “I’m feeling much better but I’m taking things slowly. It’s just good to be back. I’ve had a great week in the studio here and things couldn’t be better.

“I’m not sure when my next single is coming out. I’m just working as fast as I can and getting it all done.”

That’s great news for Minogue and her new album is sure to be a hit.

Here she is outside a recording studio on May 11th. She looks so happy! [via]

David Blaine’s stupid stunt predictably fails

David Blaine surprised no one by not being able to break the world’s record for holding one’s breath underwater after spending a week beating the crap out of his body by living in a water globe in Lincoln Center for people to gawk at.

He started spurting bubbles nearly two minutes short of the record, and divers came to his pitiful rescue:

Blaine was trying to free himself from chains and handcuffs while bidding to break the record of 8 minutes, 58 seconds for holding one’s breath underwater. The stunt, following a weeklong endurance challenge underwater, was televised live by ABC.

With Blaine’s face contorted in pain and bubbles rising to the surface, divers went in to release him from the chains and pull him out. Blaine held his breath for 7:08.

“I am humbled so much by the support of everyone from New York City and from all over the world,” Blaine said. “This was a very difficult week, but you all made it fly by with your strong support and your energy. Thank you so much, everybody. … I love you all.”

After a 100-minute television preamble that showed his training techniques — including holding his breath in a tank of sharks — Blaine had sucked in his last breath before going under. Kirk Krack, his trainer and a diving expert, offered encouragement as Blaine remained nearly still for the first five minutes of his dive.

Then, methodically, he removed two of his handcuffs and was trying to remove chains that held him before the divers came in to save him.

Blaine has suffered liver damage, loss of sensation in his body, and rashes all over as a result of his deal with the devil. The long term effects of gambling with his health for publicity have yet to be determined.

I saw the highlights of the stunt on German TV, and it really made me uncomfortable. Just thinking about it while Blaine was underwater made me uncomfortable.

Blaine couldn’t have expected to break the world record for holding one’s breath, but he had to show how far he was willing to go. It was too far indeed.

David Blaine strikes a deal with the devil

I don’t wish David Blaine any ill will, and I really hope he gets out of the bubble alive and without permanent brain damage from oxygen deprivation. He’s a total fool, though, to bring his body to its breaking point and then expect to top it off by holding his breath longer than people who are in top form and have trained for years - while he’s breaking out of a bunch of chains!

Blaine’s skin is predictably peeling off from his week-long underwater stunt, and now he’s experiencing excruciating pain throughout his body. Doctors says his muscles are breaking down and that he “might never be the same again” and could develop a seizure disorder:

David Blaine has described his seven days in a sphere of water as “horrific”, saying he has never experienced pain like this before…

“I think the time has started to really take its toll on my body. It has started to become horrific in many, many ways.

“Every muscle doesn’t just ache, it feels like a sharp shooting pain, like a knife being stabbed.”

Blaine’s skin, which has shrivlled and pruned due to the water, hurts as well, and he is very concerned for his muscles - which have begun to atrophy.

“I don’t think it’s permanent, but I’ve never felt this kind of pain in a stunt before…”

Blaine’s management has refused to discuss how much he will make from his latest act, but it is certain to be in the millions, with advertising revenues alone reportedly set to top $9 million.

Doctors have already raised concerns over Blaine’s health, with Dr Murat Gunel of Yale University, who is monitoring and advising the illusionist, saying on May 2 that he “might never be the same again”.

He said a lack of adequate oxygen in Blaine’s brain during the breath-holding challenge, especially after seven days under water, carried a risk of irreversible brain injury

“Even if he is fine immediately after, there is a risk for developing seizures in the long run.

“We all advised him against this stunt.”

The bottom line is that David Blaine is making a ton of cash in a deal with the devil that could leave him with permanent health problems.

There are plenty of real people who live with chronic pain and disability. David Blaine thinks it’s ok to gamble with his health for fame and fortune. He’s about to find out that it’s not worth it.

Update: the status of Blaine’s breath-holding stunt for his two hour ABC special tonight, to air at 8:00 pm, is uncertain:

“I was basically doing breath holds on my own up ’til recently but now my long, everything, feels weaker than normal,” he said.

“Frankly, right now the angle of the finale is uncertain,” a source tells the New York Daily News. “They’re still wrestling with how the finale will end.”

“We’re just not sure if he’ll be able to handle it,” said Kirk Krack, a free-diving expert who has been training Blaine. “If we pulled him out of the water, he likely would experience a blackout.”

According to the News, blood tests have shown Blaine’s body has adapted to the weightless environment by constricting his blood vessels, Krack said.

His blood plasma levels are only at 75% of normal, which means that he’ll probably have to be removed from the water gradually, after the stunt is completed.

Brad Pitt jets back to America with ailing baby Zahara

16 month-old Zahara Jolie-Pitt suffers from rickets, a bone disorder that she developed while in an Ethopian orphanage. When she came down with a cold, Brad learned that rickets makes her more susceptible to all sorts of diseases that are common in Africa, including malaria and yellow fever. He became concerned for her health and brought her back to the states for medical care. Babies get sick a lot and Zahara will probably be fine, but this reopens the conflict between Angelina and Brad as to where Angelina will give birth:

Brad flew back to Los Angeles on a private jet to have a meeting with one-year-old Zahara’s main doctor about a possible recurrence of the condition [rickets]

And 30-year-old Jolie will be following hot on his heels with Zahara and four-year-old Maddox if her medical team recommend the move.

A source told us: “Angie wants to have her child in Africa but Brad has had doubts all along and there’s a delivery room on standby at Cedars-Sinai.

“When he mentioned Zahara had a cold he was shocked to be told that in Namibia she was more susceptible to diseases like malaria and yellow fever as her immune system would have been weakened by the rickets.

“A private flight was booked for Brad to have a consultation and he told Angie he is sick of worrying about them all.

“He wants them to be perfectly safe and for his first biological child to be born in the safety of LA’s top hospital.”

You know Angelina will do whatever she decides, and won’t let someone else tell her where to have her baby. She is said to be planning to use a birthing tub in a Namibian hospital for a water birth. I had most of my labor in a birthing tub and found it to be very relaxing. It’s a nice alternative to medication and is said to be as effective as an epidural.

Update: Angelina Jolie’s Dateline interview:

Here are pictures from People Magazine online of the world’s most beautiful family. You may have seen most of them already, but some are new.

Eminem reconciles with his dying mother

Eminem is having a rough month. His second marriage to Kim Mathers broke up admit allegations of his drug abuse, his best friend the rapper Proof was shot and killed, and his mother is dying of stage four breast canncer. Eminem must have learned something from tragedy, because he’s decided to put aside the long-standing feud with his mom and has spoken to her for the first time in years. He’s even paid some of her massive medical bills:

Eminem and his mother Debbie Nelson famously fell out after which he attacked her through his songs; she then sued him for defamation in 2002 claiming $7million.

However, now that Nelson has terminal cancer, Eminem is desperate to help. A source told The Sun: “The nightmare Debbie has been going through with her cancer has put everything into perspective.

“She is very weak and knows the prognosis is bleak. She is desperate to build bridges with her son and put things right before its too late.

“He has started helping her financially with her medical bills. They’ve spoken a few times on the phone and she desperately hopes he will visit her.”

It’s nice that Eminem is making an effort, but what the hell is wrong with him that he hasn’t visited his mom in the hospital?

Meanwhile 50 Cent says that Eminem is going to be ok and that hip hop reflects the state of violence in African-American culture and is not the cause:

He says, “He’s coming along. He’s gonna be all right. I mean, it was definitely a big loss for him. Proof was actually his best friend in the world from forever.”

The rapper insists that the sometimes violent lyrics in hip-hop music did not play a role in Proof’s murder. He adds, “I think that the violence that happened to Proof and the violence that’s happening across America right now has nothing to do with hip-hop. It has something to do with the people - the state of them - and the music doesn’t alter that.”

Maybe Eminem will actually see his mom before she dies. It might help him realize how important family and friends are, and how you shouldn’t hold a grudge.

Violet Affleck rushed to hospital with breathing problems

Four month-old Violet Affleck, the baby daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, was rushed to hospital when she had trouble breathing on April 8th. She is fine now, but the new family had quite a scare:

In Touch Weekly is reporting that on April 8 the 4-month-old adorable little girl had to be rushed to a medical building in Century City, Calif.

It seems Violet was having difficulty breathing, says an insider, who adds that the baby was also tested for asthma.

The weekly tabloid cites an eyewitness that said, “Ben and Jen looked so worried. As Ben carried Violet, Jen kept peering into the blanket to check on her…”

They got their little girl in for care and about an hour later, a much calmer family emerged, and they headed straight home with Violet.

That must be when the recent pictures of Violet were taken. It’s scary to have a baby with a medical problem, and we hope that Violet is completely recovered.

Jennifer Garner has admitted that she’s scared of filming the scene in Alias where her character gives birth:

The actress, who gave birth to baby Violet last December, fears her on-screen labor will be a huge
embarrassment.

She says, “I think it is going to be an incredibly embarrassing day. I have been dreading this moment as long as I have known it was coming. I can’t even imagine being in front of my crew. It is not even about the people watching it on TV. Imagine what this crew has seen me do over the last five years? I still get embarrassed any time I have to not have my clothes on around them, because those are my guys. They are all like brothers or father figures, so it will be a rough day for me.”

David Beckham has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

David Beckham has revealed his battle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, from which he has suffered in silence for years:

He claims former teammates at Manchester United mocked him and his wife, former SPICE GIRL VICTORIA BECKHAM, is bemused by his bizarre behaviour. Beckham explains, “I’ve got this obsessive compulsive disorder where I have to have everything in a straight line or everything in a straight line or everything has to be in pairs. “I’ll go into a hotel room. Before I can relax I have to move all the leaflets and books and put them in a drawer. Everything has to be perfect. “I’ll put Pepsi cans in the fridge and if there’s one too many then I’ll put it in another cupboard somewhere. “I would like to (stop). I’ve tried and I can’t stop.”

We hope Beckham gets treatment and can overcome his OCD. It’s brave of him to reveal a mental disorder and we won’t make fun of him for it. His wife is fair game, though.

Here’s his skinny, greasy-faced wife outside of a restaurant in London on April 1st. She looks like she’s on something and she’s wearing fur!

Did Britney visit the hospital again?

Britney has denied that she’s pregnant, but is said to have gone to a UCLA hospital this weekend for severe stomach cramps. It’s always possible that she had food poisoning or something, but the hospital representative makes it sound as if it was Britney and that she’s pregnant!

[Britney’s] representative stated, “Britney’s not pregnant, and if she were, she wouldn’t drink.”

However, unconfirmed reports in America have claimed Federline had to take Spears to Santa Monica UCLA Medica Center this week, after the singer suffered stomach cramps.

The centre’s Barbra Johna is quoted as saying, “Unfortunately we cannot go into patient speficis due to patient confidentiality, however I can confirm we did receive a new patient to the maternity ward.

“I’d like to say that this female is in a fit and healthy state.”

Would the hospital representative mess with us like that?

The Britney Spears pregnancy rumors are not going to be put to rest with these latest pictures, which show the new mom in a skintight white dress with a pudge or a bump depending on if you squint hard enough.

Star Jones did almost die - she lied

Close up picture of Star and Al looking at a camera with Star's saggy cleavage circled and the caption WTF is wrong with Star's tits?
So The NY Daily News has evidence that Star Jones downplayed the health scare she suffered after her breast lift and tummy tuck two weeks ago. The people at the plastic surgeon’s office made an unprecedented call to 911, which suggests that there was something seriously wrong:

“Hi there, this is Dee at the Pacific Surgery Center,” a woman’s voice is heard alerting the Santa Monica emergency dispatcher. “We have a patient who is on our surgery table, who we cannot stop from bleeding.”

Shortly after the frantic 4:56 p.m. call - which was played for Lowdown yesterday by a source who obtained it from the Santa Monica city attorney - an ambulance took Jones from the outpatient surgery center to Saint John’s Health Center, a full-service hospital across the street, where she was eventually stabilized.

On Monday’s installment of “The View,” Jones insisted: “I did not almost die. I’m anemic. … They gave me the blood, and literally I was fine right afterward.”

Jones should have admitted that she was really in danger. Maybe then Joy Behar wouldn’t have been so rude and the rest of us would have laid off ripping on her for a day or two. I’m glad she’s better, but I still hope she loses her job on The View and has to become a spokesperson for something embarassing.

Ashlee Simpson has the wrong impression of the Japanese healthcare system

Ashlee Simpson is talking about her bout with the exhaustion virus that claims countless young pop starlets each year. In mid-December, 2005 after a busy US tour, she went to Japan where she had to be hospitalized in less than ideal quarters:

The singer was promoting her new album, ‘Autobiography,’ and her very busy schedule was too much to bear.

She said, “I finished my US tour and went straight to Japan.”

She explains, “I didn’t go to a nice emergency room - I ended up in one with blood on the walls. Nasty.”

“I was dehydrated. I had bronchitis.”

She adds, “Who knows exactly what it was? I think it was just complete exhaustion.”

Despite Ashlee’s impression, Japan’s health care system is much better than that of the United States. In a 2000 report by the World Health Organization, Japan ranked 10th overall in health care while the US came in at 37th - below most other industrialized nations. The US also has a higher infant mortality rate than Japan.

Here are pictures of Ashlee in April’s Jane magazine.
