Jodie Sweetin on the Today Show: “everyone has to go through these things”

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Former “Full House” star – and former drug addict – Jodie Sweetin had an interesting interview on “The Today Show” this morning to promote her new book “Unsweetined.” What was most interesting about Jodie’s interview was what was lacking. She seemed nonchalant to the point of flippant throughout the entire thing. There were certainly moments where it was more shocking than others – like when she was talking about not being clean and sober since she’s been a mother. She just says it so casually. She talks about hardcore drugs the same way, and Matt Lauer has to interrupt her to clarify that she’s not talking about pot or other commonly used drugs, she’s talking about meth and cocaine. And the response is still just a very casual “sure” type of thing.

She never once struck me as being dishonest, but I always find it strange when people talk about serious, unusual things in a flippant way. Like in high school, didn’t everyone have a few overly-dramatic friends that did that for attention? It’s always struck me as a way to startle people by not just saying it, but acting like it’s no big deal. Which is very much what seems to be going down in Jodie’s interview.

Jodie also seems to try to explain or possibly excuse all those years she spent lying about being clean and sober. She said that her stint in rehab was revealed “not of [her] choosing,” and that it basically forced her to admit what she’d gone through before she was ready.

“When it first came out that I had gone to rehab and that I was trying to get things together, it wasn’t of my own choosing that that story came out, and I don’t think I was in a place at that point in my life to really do what it took to be honest and to get to a place where what I was saying was actually true and that I was actually living by those principles in my life.”

[Transcribed from the Today Show]

I’ve always been rooting for Jodie. But frankly, I was a bit disappointed, and I had thought she had her act together a little better than this. At the end of the interview she talks about how “everyone has to go through these things” – and I think she means personal struggles. But the way she phrases it, it seems like she’s just trying to act like meth and coke addiction is something that’s really common to struggle with. And that’s just not the case. I’m not saying it’s necessary for her to ostracize herself, but combined with her shoulder-shrugging, no-big-deal attitude, I didn’t feel like she had the self-awareness or insight I’d expect to see in someone who’s made a true and lasting commitment to sobriety.

Jodie Sweetin admits she wasn’t sober during her “sober” media tour in 2006

jodiesweetin
Former “Full House” star Jodie Sweetin has had quite the sordid life since the show ended in 1995. She’s battled severe drug addiction and alcoholism, got married at 20 and divorced two years later, then went on a national speaking tour talking about how she’d finally sobered up. Jodie got pregnant then married again to cameraman Cody Herpin, who she split from last November when their daughter Zoie was seven months old. Cody accused her of still being an addict and even driving drunk with Zoie in the car. At the time Sweetin obviously denied it, but now she’s coming clean about not being clean, and the guilt she’s felt over her hypocrisy.

Jodie Sweetin has found a way to make money again. Hosting a pantsless dancing competition [“Pants off Dance Off”] while addicted to meth didn’t work out so well, but maybe she will find a larger audience of readers interested in her long and sordid affair with drugs she describes as both socially acceptable (coke, Ecstasy) and those better done behind closed doors (meth). She tells all in her new book unSweetined.

Last year the ‘Full House’ middle child went ‘From Meth Addict to Mom.’ The transformation may not have been a full one. She gave birth to daughter Zoie in April 2008, soon fell back into her winey, if not methy, ways and split from husband Cody Herpin in November.

Here is an excerpt about her coke-fueled sobriety tour, and you can read more here:

When I got to my hotel near Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I slept for a few hours but when I woke up I was still dead tired. I was a mess. Luckily I had the coke to pick me back up. I did a few key bumps and headed to the lecture hall, where a sold-out crowd waited to hear me speak. I thought for sure that one of the professors would take one look at me and kick me out. But none did. They wanted to hear about the trials and tribulations of Jodie Sweetin, or at least the Jodie Sweetin I had created by appearing on Good Morning America and talking to People magazine.

I stood up at the podium, looked around the room, and put on my best TV smile. I was so disappointed in myself. I was living a complete lie. But unfortunately, guilt doesn’t make you stop. I talked about growing up on television and about how great my life was now that I was sober, and then midspeech I started to cry. The crowd probably thought that the memories of hitting rock bottom were too much for me to handle. Or maybe they thought the tears were just a way for an actor to send a message that drugs are bad. I don’t know what they thought.

I know what they didn’t think. They didn’t think I was coming down from a two-day bender of coke, meth, and Ecstasy and they didn’t think that I was lying to them with every sentence that came out of my mouth. That much I do know. The little bit of coke that I had done before the speech wasn’t enough to make me forget how bad I felt for doing what I was doing. The guilt was eating away at me. I was struggling to keep it together, but no one realized that. I finished. They applauded. Standing ovation. Just how I liked it. And it was over.

I was just so tired. Tired of lying. Tired of pretending to be someone that I wasn’t. I took a deep breath and walked out of the lecture hall. I went back to my hotel room and buried my face in my hands. I couldn’t keep doing this. It had to end. But not today. I wiped away the tears and finished the baggie of coke.

[From the Huffington Post via PopEater]

There are some famous addicts that I get pretty sick of, and there are others that I feel genuine empathy for. I’m not sure why – maybe it’s that she played such a nice, normal girl when I was growing up watching “Full House” – but I’m always rooting for Jodie. Maybe it’s that she doesn’t “look” like a hardcore drug addict. It really makes you reexamine your own stereotypes about who a drug user is. Some of the most amazing, brilliant people I’ve met have overcome mind-boggling drug problems, and I can’t help but hope Jodie eventually does the same.

While it’s good she’s finally come clean, it obviously presents a dilemma. In the future it’ll be hard to believe she’s ever totally sober unless she presents a drug test every time she says it. I guess it’s one of those things where you just have to hope it’s true. It doesn’t seem like Jodie could handle her own hypocrisy, and knowing that you’re a fraud can really eat away at your soul over time. I can’t claim to understand drug addiction, but for me, I imagine that feeling that miserable would be a serious deterrent. Serious addiction can take several attempts to beat. Hopefully Jodie’s a lot further along in the process now.

Jodie Sweetin’s drug tests are clean; ex details her past drug use

80724A1

Jodie Sweetin and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Cody Herpin, have made one important step forward in the custody case of their baby daughter. Both of them have tested completely clean for drugs. This is actually a bit of a surprise to me, since Us Weekly’s print issue just had a fairly convincing interview with Herpin where he detailed all of Jodie’s drug problems. But for now it looks like she’s doing better in that regard.

Jodie Sweetin has tested clear of drugs, her attorney Wilma Presley tells PEOPLE. The drug test had been ordered by an Orange County, Calif., court for both the Full House star and her estranged husband Cody Herpin. “Her test is good, it’s clear,” Presley said.

Herpin also tested clear of drugs, his attorney Robert Benevente said. “Cody voluntarily took a hair follicle test and tested clean.” Both Sweetin, 27, and Herpin, 31, accompanied by their lawyers, arrived in court for a custody hearing Monday. The judge asked that the attorneys for both sides briefly meet in private before resuming the hearing.

After the hearing resumed, Sweetin’s lawyer argued that the court should be sealed for Zoie’s privacy. The judge postponed that issue to a Feb. 25 hearing. Presley said that by mutual agreement with Herpin, Sweetin is changing her legal separation filing to a full divorce.

Herpin has made repeated allegations in media interviews that Sweetin, a recovering meth addict and alcoholic, has abused drugs before and after their marriage and may still be a risk to their daughter Zoie, 10 months. Sweetin told PEOPLE last month that she was “100 percent sober.”

[From People]

According to Herpin, he and Jodie had a very soap opera-esq love affair. He admits to the magazine that he smoked weed with her when they first met, but that she was into a lot of hard drugs, which he initially shrugged off as just being part of Hollywood. He detailed lots of Jodie’s drug issues for Us Weekly.

Driving drunk with their baby in the car:
Herpin claims in court papers the harrowing incident occured in May 2008, “when Zoie was only 1 month old.”

Had a drink and smoked while pregnant:
The night they found out she was expecting, he caught her with a cigarette and a Jack Daniels and Coke. Twice.

Rampant drugs:
Sweetin often used Ecstasy, cocaine and crack premarriage, and Ecstacy after, says Herpin.

She once nearly died:
“She just wouldn’t breath,” he says of a June 2007 overdose.

She hid vodka in Coke cans:
Seeing her with a can in summer 2007, “I realized, wait, she doesn’t drink soda. I took a sip. It was vodka.”

[From Us Weekly, Feb. 16 2009, print ed.]

Herpin also says Jodie can’t be alone and has to surround herself with people all the time. He also caught her doing cocaine off a toilet seat in a restaurant bathroom. After most of the incidents he threatened to leave her but she always begged him to take her back. He also told her he’d ask her to marry him after she was sober for two whole weeks. When that date came the pair eloped. And then quickly headed off to a bar to get drunk.

If his story is true Jodie has had a problem more recently that she’s admitted. And it sounds like it’s as bad as ever. It doesn’t sound like she makes good decisions, but frankly it doesn’t sound like Cody does either. He’s a borderline enabler. He made a lot of empty threats that he never followed up on, and he always took Jodie back because he felt badly for her when she’d talk down about herself. He said that he regrets their marriage but not their daughter Zoie. Hopefully the court will make continued drug tests a requirement for both Sweetin and Herpin, for their daughter’s safety – and their own.

Has Jodie Sweetin relapsed and started using cocaine?

Jodie Sweetin spotted in West Hollywood

I hate to say it, but it really does sound like former Full House star Jodie Sweetin has fallen off the wagon and started using drugs again. Jodie is in the process of divorcing her husband, Cody Herpin, and trying to get custody of their baby daughter Zoie.

The National Enquirer – which is generally a very reputable source – has a detailed statement from a co-worker on the set of Jodie’s last movie. They gave the person a polygraph and everything, and they passed. The eyewitness says they did coke with Jodie and also smelled marijuana coming from her trailer on multiple occasions.

I watched Jodie Sweetin snort cocaine!” Those are the shocking words of a co-worker on the set of the troubled star’s latest movie – and the charge could cost her custody of her baby daughter… [husband] Cody has already accused Jodie, 27, of driving drunk with their daughter in the car – and now in a blockbuster world exclusive, The Enquirer has found an eyewitness who claims Jodie was snorting coke while filming the comedy “Port City” just a few months ago!

The eyewitness passed a polygraph exam and said that in late August, Jodie was using cocaine in a trailer shared by cast members on the movie’s set in Wilmington, N.C. “The door of the trailer was locked,” the source says. “We knocked on the door for a few minutes, and finally some guy let us in. Jodie was sitting on the couch.

“After a few minutes of conversation, Jodie announced: ‘I have a surprise for you.’ She led us to the back of the trailer where there was a white paper plate with a small pile of white powder and a rolled-up $20 bill beside it.

Jodie said she’d just bought about $50 worth of cocaine from some local guys who’d been hanging out in the seedy neighborhood where we’d been filming. We each took turns cutting a line of coke and then snorting it. I witnessed Jodie snort at least two lines of cocaine.”

[From the National Enquirer, Feb. 2, 2009, print ed.]

In addition to all this, Jodie drank and smoked heavily at the film’s wrap party. Initially she wasn’t going to go because her husband Cody didn’t want her to, but he ended up leaving to return to Los Angeles early, so Jodie went to the party anyway. She’s claimed publicly – and in court documents – that she’s completely sober, but it seems like that defense is starting to crumble. Obviously these reports are a few months old, so hopefully she’s gotten clean again. I can’t imagine many things more painful than losing custody of your child – especially because of drugs.

Judge rules Jodie Sweetin can’t be alone with her baby

big brother sister 311008

Today a judge ordered that Jodie Sweetin cannot be alone with her 8-month-old daughter Zoie. Sweetin abruptly left her husband Cody Herpin in November, taking Zoie with her. Cody filed for an emergency hearing in family court, saying he was worried Jodie had fallen off the wagon and might be using drugs or alcohol again, which resulted in the decision.

Full House alum Jodie Sweetin is not allowed to see her 8-month-old daughter without supervision, an Orange County, Calif., judge ruled during an emergency custody hearing Wednesday. The ruling came after Sweetin’s estranged husband Cody Herpin accused her of being an unfit mother — and allegedly that she once drove intoxicated with their daughter Zoie in the car, TMZ.com reports.

A doctor who took the stand also claimed that Sweetin, 26 — a former meth addict and alcoholic who lives with her parents — had relapsed but has been in touch with her sponsor and is attending AA meetings. The doctor said she does not believe the baby is at risk at the moment.

Sweetin will now not be allowed to be with the child unless one of her parents is present, the judge said. A judge ordered both Sweetin and Herpin to submit to drug tests before the next hearing. The couple announced their split in November after a year together. She is seeking joint legal and physical custody of Zoie.

[From Us Weekly]

People says that the main concern was that Jodie was drinking again, but they’re also worried about meth.

“It’s primarily alcohol [abuse] but there’s also concern regarding methamphetamines,” Robert Benavente, the lawyer for her ex Cody Herpin, tells PEOPLE.

Sweetin’s lawyer strongly denies the claims. “Jodie absolutely has not relapsed into using meth,” Wilma Presley tells PEOPLE. “She merely confessed to having several glasses of wine over dinner recently and felt guilty about that. She is currently in a 12-step program and is working hard on her sobriety. She wants to be clean and sober from everything.”

[From People]

Obviously a few glasses of wine can be a problem for anyone with an addictive personality, and it’s a slippery slope. While Jodie did take Zoie with her when she left Cody, she’s been living with her parents so having them around probably won’t be hard. This sounds like it’s going to be one dramatic divorce case. It’s unlikely Cody is going for Jodie’s money, since their home is in foreclosure and she’s stated that all of their bills are past due. Hopefully that was a one-time slip for Jodie and she’ll be able to pass the drug test and move on to better things.

Details of Jodie Sweetin’s split; home is in foreclosure

“Full House” actress, former meth addict, and new mother Jodie Sweetin abruptly left her husband Cody Herpin in November, taking their daughter with her. He publicly pleaded with her to come back, saying that he was worried for the safety of daughter Zoie. He also claimed that Jodie took almost all of their money when she hightailed it – and that he had absolutely no clue why she left. While Herpin still seems totally clueless, Jodie filed court papers that gave an idea as to the couple’s troubles – including the fact that their home is in foreclosure.

“Our house is in foreclosure, our water has been shut off twice. Currently, all of our other utilities are overdue,” the actress says in papers filed Nov. 19 in an Orange County, Calif., court, describing the 16-month union as “rocky.” Herpin, a driver and transportation coordinator in the film industry, stopped working after they got married, Sweetin alleges. “[He] kept finding one excuse after another for his failure to even attempt to find employment,” she says.

Sweetin, 26, claims the couple were kept afloat financially with Full House residuals and help from their parents. The actress filed for legal separation from Herpin, 31, last month. The latest documents are a request for a court order allowing her to retrieve her belongings, as well as clothing and toys for their 7-month-old daughter, Zoie, in the event Herpin “prevents [her] from peacefully taking these items.” Sweetin claims she worries Herpin “will become very emotional and possibly erratic.”

Reached for comment, Herpin tells PEOPLE that Sweetin has returned home four times since the above filing, but “she won’t talk to me,” he says, and his emails to her have gone unanswered. “I still have no idea what this is about. None of this makes sense.”

As for his lack of employment, “I was the stay-at-home dad, my job was taking care of Zoie,” due to Sweetin’s busy schedule, Herpin says. He is seeking sole legal and physical custody of the couple’s daughter and spousal support from Sweetin.

[From People]

Jodie also claims there was an “angry incident” the day before she left Cody in which he told her she couldn’t take Zoie if she left him, and if she tried he would call the police. According to her, he then grabbed the baby off the floor, but cooled down and went for a walk. It must have been more dramatic than it comes off in the simple retelling, because right after that Sweetin took the baby and dog and moved in with her parents. She also said in court papers, “‘I would never deprive [Herpin] of seeing our daughter … However, I believe he is going to try to prevent me from seeing [her].’” So it sounds like she’s afraid Cody will kidnap Zoie or something.

Cody still claims he’s utterly clueless about any problems in their marriage, but clearly there was at least a good deal of financial stress put on a fairly young couple. A home in foreclosure is a big deal, and I doubt anyone going through it would be happy and their relationship wouldn’t be affected. It sounds like the fight was the straw that broke the camel’s back and Jodie was already wanting to leave.

Full House’s Jodie Sweetin in talks to star in reality show

Full House’s Jodie Sweetin has made quite the turnaround in her life and now in her career. The former meth addict became a mother in April and landed on the cover of People with the story of how she turned her life around. Jodie didn’t pull a Nicole Richie and decide to straighten out once she got pregnant. She’d gotten clean and sober a few years earlier, and had been giving speeches about her experiences to various schools throughout the country.

Now Jodie and her husband Cory Herpin are in talks to get their own reality show.

Former Full House star Jodie Sweetin, who gave birth to a baby girl earlier this year, has another production in the works: a reality-TV show.

“We’re going to start shooting in a couple months,” Sweetin, 26, told PEOPLE Thursday at the Maxim Extreme Sports Party in Los Angeles. “We are in talks with a couple of networks right now. We have one picked out, but nothing is signed yet.”

What made her and husband Cody Herpin decide to make the jump into the world of reality TV? “We actually got approached about doing it by multiple people,” she says. “It was one of those things where we were like, ‘Wow. Let’s totally do it.’ I think it’s sort of a fun way to show the other side of celebrity and a sort of semi-normal life.”

And the pair isn’t put off by the bad relationship track record other reality-TV couples (Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler, Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro) have faced. In fact, Sweetin says she and Herpin are “hoping to break the reality show curse.”

As for the name of the show, Sweetin’s lips are sealed–for now. She says, “Before you sign contracts, you can’t say anything.”

[From People]

I am totally opposed to reality television on principle alone – it’s led to the death of the sitcom, my favorite form of sub-par entertainment. But I would definitely watch this show. I find Jodie’s story really fascinating. She managed to stay completely out of the public eye for so long, including when she had all her drug problems. And that’s normally when most former child stars seem to find the photographers.

Whenever I’ve seen Jodie interviewed, she’s always come across as really open and honest about her struggle, and it seems like she has a good – but not cliché – perspective on the whole thing. Hopefully she and Cody sign a deal so I can numb my brain for an extra half an hour a week.

Jodie Sweetin wants to be on “Dancing With The Stars”

Full House’s middle child Jodie Sweetin scored the cover of People Magazine this week with the story of her meth addiction and subsequent journey to sobriety and motherhood. She is a first-time mom to a seven week old baby daughter, Zoie, and has been married to her second husband, a “film transportation coordinator,” for 10 months. 26 year-old Sweetin’s story has helped many people who are addicted to drugs, according to her husband, who told People that “we get e-mails that say ‘Thank you so much. You saved my life.’”

Sweetin’s story is one of triumph over addiction, and shows that it can touch people from all walks of life. She says she started doing meth because of her friends, and that “It wasn’t so much the allure of it, but the people I was hanging out with. They didn’t look like the people in commercials with no teeth. They looked normal and had what I thought were normal lives. It didn’t seem scary.”

Sweetin claims her husband, a police officer, didn’t know what was going on until she ended up in the hospital 6 months after she first started doing meth. She was able to clean up with the help of her family, who she confessed to after her hospitalization. She had six weeks of inpatient treatment and six months of living with sober people from rehab, during which she broke it off with her husband. People doesn’t specify where she met her second husband or if he’s also in recovery.

Baby Zoie is a joy for Sweetin and her husband. She calls her “amazing” and says “Sometimes I just look at her and go, ‘You’re so perfect.’”

As for her future ambitions, the former child star says she’s “begging to be on Dancing with the Stars,” and that “I’ve danced my whole life.”

Sweetin struck quite a few poses on the red carpet for the TV Land Awards in Santa Monica on Sunday. She wore an unflattering lime green embroidered dress with a see-through long paneled skirt and bronze heels. She’s definitely a candidate for Dancing With the Stars, but she should ask a friend with taste to come along with her before she buys another outfit for an event. Jodie Sweetin: Meth Addict to Mom

People Magazine is taking a chance by featuring a relatively-unknown minor celebrity with a compelling story on the cover this week. The headline reads “From Meth Addict to Mom” and features a photo of a smiling angelic-faced Jodie Sweetin holding her open-mouthed seven-week-old baby, Zoie. 26 year-old Sweetin is best known for playing daughter Stephanie on the late 80s/early 90s sitcom Full House. Her life since the series ended has been difficult and marred by a drug addiction at the age of 22. She was married to her first husband, a police officer, when she first tried crystal meth.

Sweetin has since become sober and is married again with her new baby.

Best known for playing spunky middle child Stephanie on Full House from age 5 to 13, Sweetin then landed a real-life role that cast her against type: battling an addiction to crystal meth.

At 22, Sweetin was a college student married to LAPD officer Shaun Holguin and taking a break from acting when she first tried the drug. Six months later, she had developed a crippling daily habit that she kept secret from her husband. That is, until in 2005, when she was hospitalized after a night of partying.

Sweetin and Holguin divorced after she left treatment, while she was spending six months in sober living with people from rehab. She met Herpin, a film transportation coordinator, through friends, and the couple began dating in May 2007 – and wed just two months later.

When their whirlwind romance was quickly followed by a pregnancy, says Sweetin, “it was a blessing.”

[From People]

Jodie calls her newborn daughter “the most overwhelming, exciting thing I’ve ever done.”

Is People changing to a more tabloid format by featuring this former child actress and her sensational story? It is an interesting one, and maybe she deserves the resulting boost in fame for kicking an addiction and becoming a devoted mom. Still, you can’t help but think they’re exploiting her story somewhat. Maybe if this cover sells they’ll start to seek out former child actors who have battled drug addiction and had a rough life post fame. There certainly seem to be enough of them for the slow gossip weeks. People must know that there’s nothing like a sweet baby and a reformed mom to move magazines, though.

Jodie Sweetin gives birth to a girl

Stephanie Tanner – technically Jodie Sweetin, 26, – gave birth to a baby girl yesterday. Sweetin, who starred as the middle sister on Full House, and husband Cody Herpin, 30, first shared the news of their pregnancy when they gave sonogram photos to TMZ. One can only imagine what the birth announcements might entail. Probably some sort of amniotic fluid sent to X17. The couple named their daughter Zoie Herpin.

Jodie Sweetin and her husband of less than a year now have their very own Full House: The actress has given birth to a baby daughter, PEOPLE has confirmed. Baby Zoie was delivered via C-section Saturday afternoon, and arrived weighing 8 lbs. 7 oz. and is 21 in. long.

“Jodie says that she and her husband and family are absolutely thrilled and in love with baby Zoie,” says a rep for the actress.

The former Full House star, 26, married set designer Cody Herpin, her second husband, in a small Las Vegas ceremony on July 14, 2007. The pair tied the knot at the Little Church of the West in front of a few friends. At the time, Sweetin told PEOPLE, “Cody is my best friend. I married my best friend, and I couldn’t ask for anything more. He’s an unbelievable person.”

[From People]

Sweetin was married to LAPD officer Shaun Houston from 2002 – 2007. She became addicted to meth shortly after getting married, but managed to keep it a secret from her husband until she nearly died after passing out from a combination of a cardiac arrhythmia and hypothermia in 2006. She went to Promises rehab and got clean, but her Houston ended the marriage. Since then, she’s become a well-received anti-drug speaker at high schools and colleges, and hosted Pants Off Dance Off on Fuse. According to Wikipedia Sweetin is currently “starring in a TV pilot, titled Small Bits of Happiness, a dark comedy centered around a suicide prevention specialist.”
