This week’s issue of Star floats the theory that Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have hit a rough patch in their marriage even though they’ve only been married for about year. Of course, the couple dated for four years prior to marriage and are parents to two toddlers, Harlow and Sparrow. So to an outsider, these two eventually wed because they realized they were meant for each other, right? Well, anyone who’s been married can tell you that the after-wedding reality can sometimes feel altogether different than one imagined.

While I would ordinarily dismiss this story as symptomatic of an adjustment period in Nicole and Joel’s relationship, the photo evidence (or lack thereof) supports Star‘s story quite a bit. While the two of them used to regularly walk red carpets together, they haven’t done so since Paris Fashion Week in May (above), and they haven’t been papped in a casual setting since June (below) for a family lunch. Joel’s never been the kind of guy to broadly smile for the paps (unlike, say, Matt Bellamy), so I’ll take that into account here:

Here’s where it gets sketchy though. Over the past several months, Nicole has attended tons of events solo. Of course, this could merely function as evidence that Joel is at home taking care of the kids, but Star has spoken to an insider who says that Joel is basically never at home. He’s either jamming with the band or out on tour, and Nicole is doing all of the work with the kids. Now Joel’s new television gig is set to pull him away from his family for several months, and it sounds a lot like trouble:

The honeymoon is definitely over for Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. Just one year after they tied the knot, the parents of two are gearing up for a long separation while the Good Charlotte rocker serves on the panel of the Australian version of “The Voice” — and he’s leaving his L.A.-based wife behind fuming, an insider tells Star.

“Nicole was opposed to Joel’s doing “The Voice” form the start, because she doesn’t want to endure the months apart. But Joel isn’t listening. He insists that he needs to do it for his career and signed on without her OK, which set off a pretty nasty round of fighting,” says the insider, adding that the couple’s first anniversary on Dec. 11, was anything but a happy occasion. “They spent most of the day bickering about the show.”

A major reason Nicole, 30, is against Joel’s move Down Under is that she’s set to appear as a mentor on the NBC reality show “Fashion Star” beginning in early 2012. “She really can’t go with him to Australia, but also she just doesn’t want to,” says the insider. “Nicole relies on her family and friends in L.A. to help out with the kids, especially since Joel often isn’t around to pull his weight.”

Indeed, the pair’s relationship was already strained due to Joel’s hectic schedule. “He’s usually either huddled in the studio or on tour,” the insider explains. So perhaps it’s not surprising that Nicole partied like a single woman — sans Joel — at a VuQo Vodka event dejayed by her pal Samantha Ronson in L.A. on Dec. 13. Says the insider: “Nicole complains all the time that she feels like a single parent.”

“Nicole accuses Joel of being married to his music and his career rather than her,” says an insider.

Naturally, Nicole knew that she was marrying a rock star who would be away on tour for much of the time, but it still seems like she’s getting a raw deal if this story is correct. I hope it’s all just contrived nonsense on the part of Star (which might have merely taken Joel’s new employment situation and fabricated the rest); but Joel’s not exactly going out of his way to support his wife on the red carpet either, so there might be some truth to it all. Previously, Nicole has spoken of marriage in terms of her being able to get away with more, but does that also apply to Joel as well?

This week’s OK! Magazine claims that Nicole Richie’s wedding didn’t go off without a hitch and was in fact pretty stressful for her. Nicole was asking around $100,000 for a photo and the way OK! tells it she lowered her asking price after not getting any takers. The pictures ended up in People, where Nicole earned a sidebar and not the main cover. (More on that in a moment.) At the wedding, OK! claims that her security people confiscated the cell phones of everyone in attendance in order to drive up prices for the pictures. What’s more is that several high profile guests begged off, among them Christina Aguilera and Kim Kardashian. Still, I hope it was a special day for Nicole and Joel. OK! claims it was far from it. Here’s part of their report:

Nicole hungered to see her wedding photos on a national magazine cover. But no one would match her price. In the end, she was asking $100,000 for just one photo! “Nicole was clearly very paranoid about getting the best possible deal for the photos,” confirms an insider. “It was a big deal to her right up until the last moment.”

And it put a damper on the actual wedding. The bride was so nervous that one of her guests might sell unauthorized photographs that she insisted on having all cell phones confiscated. “She was obviously trying to protect her paycheck,” sniffed one guest. “But it ruined the mood because it seemed like she didn’t trust anyone.”

She also let the details of the wedding – organized by planner to the stars Mindy Weiss – overwhelm her. “Nicole changed her mind about everything from the food to the music to the people in the wedding party,” says the insider. “She claimed she wanted an understated, modest affair, but it ended up being a disaster for Nicole.”

That’s cold that Richie invited Nicky Hilton but not Paris! There goes Paris’ claim that she was invited but had other plans.

OK! is featuring the Kardashians with their “Holiday Miracle: We’re Having Babies.” Of course none of them are pregnant and they only plan to be some day. (I read the article, don’t bother.) Maybe the Kardashians’ asking price was less than Nicole’s, or maybe they just sell better than she does. Poor Nicole only got a “Nicole’s Wedding Disaster” sidebar.

People was more generous with a friendly “Best Weddings” sidebar to their “Woman of the Year” cover with Sandra Bullock. Online there’s a picture of one of Nicole’s Marchesa wedding gowns (she had three designed for the ceremony) where Joel is kissing her and she’s backing away. Kaiser likes Nicole’s gown and thinks it’s unique, but I find the giant tulle skirt ridiculous and reminiscent of Bjork’s swan oscar dress. People has more details online of Nicole’s wedding, including the fact that her daughter Harlow, 2, was the flower girl and 15 month-old son Sparrow was the ring bearer. Richie calls the ceremony “magical” while Madden says “it was the best night of my life.” I wonder how much People shelled out for those photos and if Nicole and Joel broke even. Who am I kidding? You know Lionel Richie paid for the whole shebang and loved every minute of it.

There’s some interesting back and forth in the celebrity sites about why Paris Hilton didn’t attend the weekend wedding of her former BFF, Nicole Richie. Richie had a lavish affair by most accounts, with over 150 guests, a ‘winter’ theme and an elephant, but avian Paris was off in Vegas. According to E! Online, Paris was invited but begged off because of a scheduled birthday party for a friend, which was filmed for Paris’ reality show. US Weekly claims that Paris wasn’t invited because Nicole worried that she would steal her thunder. Here are US and E!’s reports:

When Nicole Richie got hitched to Joel Madden this weekend in front of friends—such as Gwen Stefani, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Khloé Kardashian Odom—at dad Lionel’s Beverly Hills estate, many were wondering why Paris Hilton wasn’t there.

The former BFFs and Simple Life costars did have a falling out years ago, but have since patched things up.

And although Page Six says Paris didn’t make the guest list for the intimate affair, a Hilton confidant insists that’s not the case…

“She was invited, but she had another commitment,” a source close to the heiress tells me.

So what was the reason she couldn’t be there to see Nicole tie the knot?

Paris was shooting her Oxygen reality series in Vegas this weekend, where one of her castmates was celebrating her birthday (costar Brooke Mueller didn’t attend).

“This was planned months ago,” the source says. “Paris sent Nicole and Joel a wedding gift to congratulate them and wishes them both the best.” – E! Online

Khloe Kardashian was at Nicole’s wedding, but Paris wasn’t there for whatever reason. I tend to believe US Weekly over E!, where the account sounds straight from Paris’ camp. This isn’t just about two friends who had a falling out. This also signifies Paris’ place on the Hollywood hierarchy. If Paris was still relevant, she would have scored an invitation to Nicole’s wedding regardless of the current state of their friendship or whether or not she used to date the groom’s brother. As it is, she doesn’t rate an invite while Khloe Kardashian does. Burn.

Well, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden were finally married after drawing it out forever. They got hitched yesterday, Saturday, in Beverly Hills. According to media outlets, the ceremony took place at Lionel Richie’s home, with about 150 family friends and one elephant in attendance. Take that, Katy Perry! Katy got hitched with elephants in India, and Nicole was all “I’m the Queen Bee, I can have an elephant in Beverly Hills, bitch.” Oooh, Samantha Ronson was there too! Held at the home of Nicole’s father, Lionel, the black-tie evening event was attended by approximately 150 family members and friends, including Khloe Kardashian and Samantha Ronson. One other guest: an elephant! Around 5:40 p.m., observers spotted an elephant arriving in the driveway; the animal was led into a white tent with other revelers.

Richie, 29, strived to get every detail right for her big day — putting extra special thought into her gown. Just days before the wedding, Richie remained torn over two designs: Marchesa and a vintage Chanel. In fact, she jetted off to New York City Dec. 3 for a final fitting at Marchesa with her stylist, Simone Harouche. “A lot of thought went into her dress — it was a priority for her,” a source explains.

Why the winter theme?

“Nicole is obsessed with the season,” a pal tells Us of the designer and author, who confirmed her engagement in February. (Her daughter’s middle names are Winter Kate, also the title of her clothing line).

“[The fete is] less about Joel and Nicole getting married and more about having a party,” another pal told Us of the soiree, planned by Mindy Weiss. “The spirit is that it’s a celebration and it’s very low-key.”

Though the couple — also parents to Sparrow, 15 months — has finally made their union official, Richie and Madden say they’ve long felt like husband and wife.

“We’re really focused on our family, and…we already feel kind of married, you know?” Madden, 31, told Larry King in 2009. “Our family system that we have down, we feel like this is a real family and marriage, one day it will come.”

Richie’s father, who walked his daughter down the aisle, is equally as taken by their love.

“My happiness for Nicole and Joel knows no boundaries,” the “All Night Long” crooner says. “They have given me two beautiful grandchildren, Harlow and Sparrow, and have proven to be great parents. I am not sure who is luckier, Nicole and Joel to have each other, or me, to have both of them in my life.”

She’s obsessed with winter? Does she know that winter doesn’t officially begin for another week and a half, right? Seems that if you’re truly obsessed with winter, you should aim for a Winter Solstice wedding – December 21st. Just a thought. And maybe I’m being picky, but isn’t Nicole some big designer now? Why wear Marchesa, the most boring of the wedding gown designers when you could design your own hippie-dippy gown? That was bitchy, I know. But Nicole is kind of annoying me this week. You want to know why? She acted like Carrie Underwood when she negotiated the sale of her wedding photos:

There was frantic negotiating to land Nicole Richie a $100,000 exclusive magazine deal ahead of her big wedding to Joel Madden today. Reps for Richie — who recently took a photographer to court to protect her and her children’s privacy — were as late as yesterday “playing the weekly magazines against each other to drive up the price,” an insider said.

Sources tell us that the reps for Richie, who said she planned to give the money to charity, had agreed to an OK! bid earlier in the week to make her a “cover chip” — a less important story referenced with a small photo on the front page — but then went to People to negotiate a full cover.

A source added, “Things got complicated because both Kim Kardashian and Christina Aguilera said they couldn’t attend the wedding because of other commitments.”

A rep for Richie, who’s expected to wear Marchesa to her wedding at father Lionel Richie’s Beverly Hills home, said: “Your information is incorrect”.

If the money is going to charity, that’s nice. But I don’t think it was just about the charity, you know? Especially if she was trying to negotiate a cover. At the end of the day, who is Nicole Richie, really? Why does her wedding deserve the cover?

Nicole Richie is finally (allegedly) going to marry her longterm boyfriend and the father of her children, Joel Madden, this weekend. Preparations are said to be underway at Nicole’s dad Lionel Richie’s compound, with the paparazzi capturing photos of moving vans making dropoffs there, along with additional security on the property and some kind of massive outdoor party-like construction happening. (Photos here). We’ve heard rumors for a few weeks that Nicole and Joel were planning a wedding this holiday season, but I didn’t make much of them because we’ve heard this rumor for years now. There’s more evidence this time around, and this could really be happening. Sources say the wedding will take place on December 11. If this is really happening, congratulations to these two. I thought they would remain happily unmarried as long as possible. Even though they’re getting married at the end of the year, they’ll get the tax advantages of married status for all of 2010. It sounds unromantic, but it’s practical. According to an insider, Nicole and Joel are inviting the biggest names in the music industry to their wedding, and instead of asking for gifts, they’re asking them to perform!

“There will be countless performances at the wedding,” an insider says, nothing that Nicole’s dad, Lionel Richie, has tons of musician friends who will be in attendance. “It will be one big concert.”

Hmm..too bad this so-called “insider” could not let us know the date and location of the event, eh? Although, knowing Nicole and Joel, of course their wedding will feature a lot of music. I bet it will be quite the bash. But this isn’t really giving a whole lot of info away. I need details: what will they wear? How will their adorable children be part of the ceremony? Will Benji be Joel’s best man? Who will Paris Hilton hook up with at the reception? These are the burning questions I want answered.

Nicole Richie chose to announce her engagement to her partner of three years, Joel Madden, by showing up for a taping of The Late Show with a giant diamond ring on her finger. Her interview will air on Friday. Joel confirmed the news on his Twitter account, but it looks like he’s since deleted that tweet because it only appears on caches of his feed and not on his actual page. Maybe Nicole told him that she wanted to save the news until her Late Show episode aired. Joel later tweeted “I’m screwed. Oh boy,” which taken with the deleted tweet probably means that he’s in trouble for confirming the engagement before Nicole was ready.

They’ve been together for more than three years and have two children. Now, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are planning to make it official.

“Yep. i’m engaged. Very happy. Yeah we’ve been engaged for a while so your all kind of late on that. But Thanks for the hooplah all the same,” Madden Tweeted Monday night, after news of their plans to wed went wide. He also expressed thanks to relatives who did not let word of the engagement slip.

He Tweeted: “P.s. thats why i love my family and friends. None of them are sources. All good tight lipped people who let us enjoy it! Thanks everybody”

Richie said Monday night during a taping of the Late Show with David Letterman that the couple are engaged to be married, a source told PEOPLE.

After the show, Richie headed to the New York restaurant Abe & Arthurs – without her fiancé – for dinner. “She was glowing,” says a source. “She was telling her table how happy she was.”

Richie, 28, and Madden, 30, began dating in December 2006 and have daughter Harlow, 2, and son Sparrow, 5 months.

Whatever works for them. I don’t think that people should necessarily get married just because they want to be partners and raise children together. It’s a legal issue and is not for everyone. It sounds like this is something that Joel and Nicole have thought through and that they’re ready to make it official. US Weekly quotes a source that says they’re already planning the wedding. “Nicole and Joel are in the process of planning the wedding. She’s very involved in every detail. She’s thrilled.”

We haven’t heard much about Nicole and Joel because they lead such a family-oriented, low-key lifestyle. There is an article in this week’s National Enquirer about Nicole, and it’s all about how she’s influencing Jessica Alba to feed her daughter whole, organic foods and limit access to television. Given the things we used to read about her, it’s a welcome change. Congratulations to Joel and Nicole!

Nicole Richie has been granted a three year restraining order against two paparazzi that seemed to deliberately rear end her car in early October. Both Richie and her longterm partner, Joel Madden, testified in a hearing yesterday, with the judge granting Richie’s request for the restraining order. The two photographers, who Nicole says “harass and stalk” her “daily,” must stay 50 feet away at all times. One of them apologized to Richie, and they both denied that that they’d been on her property, as Richie stated in her testimony. People Magazine is focusing their report on a lawyer mistakenly calling Joel Madden Richie’s “husband” in a question where he asked her if she called her “husband” after the accident. Richie didn’t correct him, so given the rumors that she’s secretly married to Madden this is some kind of big deal:

Maybe it was nerves. Or maybe it just wasn’t the time to issue a clarification.

But in court Monday, Nicole Richie’s lawyer Mark Geragos referred to Joel Madden as her husband and Richie didn’t correct him. The pair have been together for years and have two children.

The marital reference came up during her 15 minutes of testimony at a hearing in which a judge issued a restraining order against two aggressive paparazzi.

Richie, 28, wearing black slacks, a black-and-white blouse and her hair in a bun, stated on the witness stand she was “crying hysterically and scared” last month after she was rear-ended by the two photographers, who she says “stalk and harass” her daily.

“Did you call your husband?” asked Geragos.

“Yes,” Richie said.

Madden also testified, telling L.A. Superior Court Judge Carol Boas Goodson that Richie “is terrified” that the photographers might cause another accident involving their children, Harlow, 22 months, and Sparrow, 9 weeks, whom she’s with “24/7,” he said.

The photographers, Ivon Miguel and Eduardo Arrivabene, attended the hearing and denied that they ever trespassed on Richie’s property, which she alleged. At one point, Miguel stated to Richie, “I want to apologize for the accident. You don’t have to worry about us. I come from a good family.”

But the judge ordered the men to stay 50 yards away from Richie and her two children until 2012.

TMZ is reporting that these two aren’t married and it’s just a matter of the lawyer misspeaking. In all seriousness, it’s a good thing that Richie has some protection against these paparazzi that were bothering her. The accident could have been much worse. She has two very young kids she’s responsible for and she doesn’t need the stress of worrying about their safety. As we’ve mentioned before, a tough new anti-paparazzi law will go into effect in California in January. It will make it a crime to “take and sell unauthorized photos of celebrities in ‘personal or familial activity.’” I love to see pictures of celebrities out with their cute kids, but if it comes at the expense of their well being it’s not worth it. This law should hopefully help avoid future accidents like the one that Richie suffered.

Joel and Benji Madden were on a morning radio show in Melbourne, Australia on Monday when the hosts pulled a stunt that led Joel to storm off. Apparently the hosts were trying to set up a gag where they would test whether the twin brothers could feel each others’ emotions. They blindfolded Benji and gave Joel that infamous photo of Britney getting out of a car without her undies on. (Well, one of those photos, she did it at least three separate times in the fall of 2006.) Benji guessed that Joel was “annoyed,” and boy was he right. After the male host of the show drew some kind of “shape” on a piece of paper for Joel, he took off. His brother Benji soon followed and then Joel fired off a tweet explaining that he’d just left a radio show.

A couple of Australian hosts pushed Joel Madden’s last nerve during an interview Monday, and he reportedly walked out mid-interview while on FOX FM in Melbourne. Madden sent out an angry tweet through his Twitter account, “Just walked out of a FOXfm interview in Melbourne not in the mood to be a clown.”
He continued, “Most of the time I can put up with idiot morning show hosts but not today. I guess I have finally found some aussie’s I don’t get on with…”

According to FOX FM, the mood in the studio changed when Madden and his brother Benji were asked to test out that old wives tale that twins can sense what the other one is feeling. Benji put on an eye mask and Joel was handed the famous photo of Britney getting out of a car without her undies on.

Benji guessed that his brother was annoyed – which turned out to be right! Joel said “I think I’m pretty laid back dude, but you guys are getting on my nerves.”

Hosts Matt & Jo then apologized and tried to move on to the next challenge. Matt began to draw a shape on a piece of paper – which was a step too far for Joel. He stormed out of the studio saying “we’re outta here.” Benji was left in the studio but followed his brother shortly afterward.

I looked through the website for this radio program, The Matt and Jo Show, and couldn’t find a reference to this incident at all. The blog entry that PopEater links to on the radio station’s website has also been removed. It’s like they’d rather make people forget that it ever happened. I really want to know, though – what kind of shape did the host draw on the piece of paper? I’m sure it was something naughty to get Joel to stomp out of there like that. So was it the shape or the photo of Britney’s bits that did it?

I really hate morning talk shows and the way the hosts laugh loudly at the stupidest jokes. I listened to a few minutes of the Matt and Jo Show on their website and it doesn’t differ much from the format of American morning radio shows. In other words, it’s annoying and juvenile. These are the same radio hosts who asked Lady Gaga if she was a hermaphrodite, and I doubt they’ll change just because they offended a celebrity guest.

Surprising no one, Star Magazine’s cover story this week is total crap. They claim that Nicole Richie and Joel Madden got married a few weeks ago. If that was the basic gist of the report, I wouldn’t think anything of it. After all, a bunch of different sources were running variations on the “Joel and Nicole might be secretly married” story, including us. Star Magazine took it to a different level though. According to Star, “The long-time loves exchanged vows during an intimate at-home ceremony on Oct. 14 with Joel’s brother and bandmate Benji as a witness. But the couple were hardly alone on their big day. They were actually married — along with 45,000 other people worldwide! — as part of a mass wedding by the Unification Church.” Of course this was crap. Joel Madden called Star Magazine out with a low-key, two-sentence posting on Good Charlotte’s website:

Hold those congratulations: Nicole Richie and Joel Madden haven’t gotten hitched. The new issue of Star claims they’ve wed, but Madden, 30, denies it on his band’s website.

“I keep getting emails from old friends and family asking about a wedding. NO we didn’t get married,” he blogs.

Last May, they said they have no immediate plans to wed.

Added Madden, “We’re really focused on our family, and … we already feel kind of married, you know? Our family system that we have down, we feel like this is a real family and marriage, one day it will come.”

What more is there to say? They might get married at some point, they might not. It’s their business, and they seem to be keeping their stuff pretty private these days, save for the odd People Magazine cover celebrating their cute kids. Most sources claim that Joel is the one who really wants to get married, and that Nicole is the one who doesn’t seem to care. I have no idea if that’s the case. But I do hope that both of them agree on their decision not to marry. I’d hate to think either of them was holding some kind of grudge.
