Is Jude Law finally spending time with his 3-year-old daughter Sophia?

Have people forgotten about Jude Law’s “situation” with his one-time lover Samantha Burke? And by “one time” I mean “literally, one time.” Jude met Samantha Burke one night in late 2008. She came home with him. He was sick and heavily medicated. They had unprotected sex. She got pregnant, decided to keep the baby and Jude demanded a paternity test and then barely acknowledged that yes, he did father a fourth child (his other three kids are by his ex-wife Sadie Frost). The whole thing seemed very sleazy and sketchy, but Jude managed to move on from the incident with very little damage to his reputation. He probably doesn’t want to remind anyone about his daughter (Sophia, born September 2009) by Samantha, but here’s Star Magazine, bringing her up:

After a three-year Cold War, Jude Law has finally made an uneasy peace with his baby mama, Samantha Burke, who gave birth to his daughter, Sophia, in 2009. Jude, who demanded a paternity test to prove the child was his, has kept Samantha and Sophia at arm’s length.

“Even after the DNA test, he dealt with them in a very businesslike fashion,” explains a family friend, but Jude’s ex-wife, Sadie Frost, helped open his heart: “Sadie insisted that Sophia be treated as an equal sister to his other kids.”

Now Jude’s relationship with his daughter is stronger than ever.

“He made sure the little one was at his 40th birthday with his other kids, who have taken to calling her their little sister… when Jude flies to New York, he tries to see his Sophia as often as possible.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this were true. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Jude has only seen his daughter a handful of times over the years. It was my understanding that Samantha moved back to Florida and she’s raising Sophia there…? But Samantha did pick up $300,000 for Sophia’s first photos, so maybe Samantha moved back to New York (where she met Jude for the first time) after Sophia was born. I don’t know. Do you judge Jude for not wanting to be too involved with Samantha and Sophia? I would hope that he would spend more time with Sophia, of course, but I think Samantha is… odd. She’s “off” somehow. Eh.

Rooney Mara in Valentino & Balenciaga in Berlin: lovely or slumpy?

Here are some pretty pictures of Jude Law and Rooney Mara in Berlin yesterday for the photocall and Berlin Film Festival premiere of Side Effects. I don’t know why Channing Tatum didn’t go to Berlin, but I’m not complaining about the extra Jude-Time we’re getting. He’s looking incredibly hot these days. As for Rooney and her hit-or-miss styles… for the photocall (the pants/vest thing), she wore Balenciaga and for the premiere she wore a black lace Valentino gown/dress. She wore Louboutins with both outfits. Even though I’m not crazy about the sleeves on the Valentino, I like the overall look. She’s really tiny, isn’t she? She’s SO petite and she has such bad posture. That’s starting to be my tic with Rooney – like the tic I have with Kristen Stewart biting her lip and rolling her eyes. Rooney is always slouching and slumping. It bugs.

In other Rooney news, she was asked about her nude scenes in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo recently, and Rooney admitted that she wore a “merkin” down there, and she requested it in a strawberry-blonde shade. Which makes me want to re-watch that film because I don’t remember her biscuit fur as strawberry blonde…? Anyway, Rooney said: “I had to wear a merkin… They didn’t ask me to but I’m naked so much in it (movie) I wanted one. It felt like a little fur bikini… and I had them make it strawberry blonde.” She also said she kept it when they finished filming and she keeps it at home. Just in case!

Rooney Mara in Alexander McQueen at the ‘Side Effects’ premiere: lovely or fug?

Here are some photos from last night’s NYC premiere of Side Effects, that Steven Soderbergh film which looks surprisingly good. I’m not sure if the film is actually supposed to be a suspense/thriller (as opposed to a straight drama), but that’s the way the commercials make it seem, and I’m up for it. Also surprising: everybody looked pretty good at the premiere. I think Catherine Zeta Jones looked the best – she wore this Michael Kors gown which looks stunning on her. Zeta killed it!

Rooney Mara, the controversial “star” of the film (Soderbergh wanted Blake Lively originally), wore white Alexander McQueen for her big premiere. You know what? I don’t hate it. I think this would have looked awful on most women, but it kind of works on someone with Rooney’s slight build. The middle-part/slicked-down hair is bad – I would love to see her hair with some body, some fluff, something different. But the dress is okay and it’s interesting.

As for the boys – Channing looked nice in his Dolce & Gabbana suit, although I’m not really crazy about his recently-shorn head. He just looks better with hair. This hairstyle makes him look even more meathead-ish. And Jude… well, Jude Law is making love to the cameras. Jude Law is the business. There’s a reason why he keeps getting ladies pregnant.

Jude Law looks kind of filled out in Hawaii: would you hit it?

Long story short: YES I WOULD HIT IT. These are photos of Jude Law on vacation in Hawaii with what appears to be a larger group which includes his children with Sadie Frost and several adult friends. Jude was photographed on the beach, having a grand old time body-surfing and laughing with his kids and friends.

Is it just me or has Jude really gained a lot of weight? Okay, not “a lot” but all of a sudden he really looks “filled out” right? In his 20s and early 30s, he always had that whippet-thin, lean and hungry look. Model-thin, like he still had a teenager’s metabolism. But I guess it caught up with him in his late 30s…? He just turned 40 years old last weekend. Now he “looks good for 40”. Which is probably fine by him, considering he was often thought of as “too pretty” in his youth. And yes, again… I would hit it. I never mind a little paunch or a wonky hairline, just as long as the dude owns it. And Jude is kind of owning it here.

Also: The Mail says Jude has a new girlfriend named Charlie Hayes-Jones. She’s only 26 years old. You can see a photo of her here.

Most men at risk of a midlife crisis treat themselves to a flash new sports car – but not Jude Law. The Hollywood star has found himself a new girlfriend 14 years his junior – who is in California during his 40th birthday celebrations.

Jude jetted off to Los Angeles to spend his birthday in the sunshine state just at the same time as 26-year-old PR executive Charlie Hayes-Jones, who once caught the eye of Prince Harry, touched down. She has also dated Isaac Ferry, the son of crooner Bryan Ferry. It’s been an eventful few months for Jude.

It was recently revealed he was enjoying a fling with wardrobe assistant Ellen Crawshaw, 31, whom he met on the set of his upcoming film Dom Hemingway. Jude grew close to Ellen during filming in the South of France and East London. She told friends at the time that she was worried their romance would fizzle out as soon as filming stopped and earlier this month, Jude turned his attentions to Charlie.

According to spies, the pair were spotted snuggling up on a sofa at London’s Playboy Club. They were also heard discussing their holiday plans. ‘Charlie has been overheard excitedly talking about spending Christmas and New Year in Los Angeles and Las Vegas,’ says my spy. ‘They seemed really happy.’

The couple later decided to drop Las Vegas from their itinerary and Jude has been keen to point out to friends he is in LA with his children and no one else. A friend of leggy Charlie added: ‘She is in PR and so is savvy enough to know how to keep her relationship with Jude quiet but it was plain to see they were a proper couple at the club. They have also been spotted at a Mayfair club together.’

Charlie has posted updates about her trip to California on Facebook, including a picture of her feet with the caption: ‘California is for lovers.’ But she made no mention of Jude.

[From The Mail]

It’s kind of crazy that young, professional 20-something ladies view Jude Law as some kind of “catch” in which they must angle themselves correctly to make it work. I mean, he’s 40, he’s fathered 4 children already and he has moobs! I’m just saying, you don’t have to work it so hard, Charlie. You’re 26 years old, have some fun with it.

Jude Law: ‘I know I’m not that young sort of pretty thing anymore’

Jude Law is the new cover boy for the New York Times T Style Magazine. The photos – by Jude’s friend Sam Taylor Johnson – are especially gorgeous. Sam is a gifted photographer, and Jude is a great photography subject. It’s not just that he’s beautiful… he’s also interesting-looking, even more interesting as he gets older, I think. Jude is promoting his role in Anna Karenina, a supporting role (as Anna’s severe husband) which some think could net Jude an Oscar nomination. You can read the full NYT piece here – it’s actually really interesting because Jude talks a lot about being a victim of the phone hacking and all of that. Some highlights:

Playing Karenin, “Anna’s morally severe, emotionally barren, piously dutiful, highly controlling pain in the neck of a husband” instead of the young heartthrob Vronsky: “In a weird way, it’s kind of a relief to think, ‘Oh, I know I’m not that young sort of pretty thing anymore,’ ” he said. “It’s quite nice talking about what it was like to be the young pretty thing, rather than being it.”

Doing films just for the money: “Without sounding too pretentious, it’s difficult to remember that it’s an art form and you are, maybe, an artist and you have to make decisions on that level. I feel kind of more confident, more settled as a human being, more settled in my own skin.” When he was younger, he said, he longed to be taken seriously but found that some of his roles did not allow him to do that. Being older, “you are allowed to be an actor, and the parts you get are more interesting.”

On playing Karenin: “It seemed to go against everything I have done, and it was fun to investigate the sides of a man that I hadn’t done before in any way, shape or form,” Law said. But it did not mean he was playing against type, he said, “because I always play against type; I have never played anyone like me.”

He and Sadie Frost share custody of their kids equally, one week with him and one week with Sadie: “I would not have been able to have the usual kind of paternal-role situation of one weekend every two weeks,” he said. “I enjoy it too much.” Everyone gets along so well that they take vacations together. “We made a decision very early on that whatever our opinion of each other — which I have to say is a good one — we were going to maintain the function of the family,” Law said. (He also has a young daughter in New York, the result of a brief affair, with whom he is in regular contact.)

Finding his personal life splashed around in the tabloids: “You suddenly start to go, ‘What, what, wait a minute. How do they know this? Where are they piecing this together from?’ ” he said, recalling some of the details of his life he saw in the press. It was clear something was going on, but Law did not know what. He became paranoid. He had his house swept for bugs and his car searched for tracking devices. He mistrusted acquaintances, even wondered about friends and family members. “The weird thing is that you start taking things for granted,” he said. “Like I thought, Maybe this is just heightened interest in what I’m doing. This is what my life has become. This is my lot and I’ve got to deal with it.”

Finding out, in 2010, that he had been hacked by Rupert Murdoch’s press: At the end of 2010, Law got a call from Scotland Yard. The police had uncovered thousands of pages of notes taken by an investigator hired by the News of the World to dig up dirt on public figures, they told him, and one of the names in the notes was Law’s. “They just had piles of notes with my credit card details, phone numbers, contacts, friends’ contacts, parents’ phone numbers,” he said. They also had recordings of voicemail messages from and to him. “There was this awful afternoon when they came over with a tape recorder and said, ‘Could you verify that this is you?’ ” None of this surprised him, really, but it made him feel less crazy. “To have other people go, ‘This is outrageous’ meant that I didn’t feel like this sort of mad, paranoid, dystopian lunatic saying, ‘the world’s following me — what’s going on?’ ” he recalled. “It felt, strangely, kind of justifying.”

Telling his 16-year-old not to get a tattoo: “Well, you’ve got them,” Law recalled his son saying, to which he responded, “Yes, but you’ve got to know that what you get is going to be forever and I don’t think at 16 you know what forever is.”

After the hacking scandal and everything else: “They had kind of stripped me and my relationships bare — there was nothing left to write,” Law said. “And there is only so much laundry one has, in the end, to be washed in public.”

On choosing what to wear during the photo shoot: “Look, tell me what I’m wearing — I really don’t care.” He added: “I don’t have a lot of time anymore for standing around choosing outfits. I’m too long in the tooth for that now.”

[From New York Times Magazine]

I thought the part about his custody arrangement with Sadie was interesting – I didn’t know that they split everything equally. That’s nice what he said about enjoying being a father, although I like that the NYT dropped a line in there about his other child, the one he fathered through a one night stand with some (slightly crazy) fan-girl.

As for Jude’s thoughts on his own aging beauty and how he’s no longer the heartthrob… what I always liked about Jude as an actor is that he never really relied on his beauty alone. He was always a talented actor, and he rarely took parts where it was just about being pretty. That being said, I think I’d rather hit it with this current Jude than the 20-something physically-perfect Jude. I like a dude with some scruff and fading prettiness.

Jude Law in character as a gross gangster/felon in London: would you hit it?

I emailed CB and told her to check out these photos of Jude Law in London. I think I might have included the words “gross” or “ew” in my email because… look at him. Jude’s prettiness has taken a few hits over the past few years, but just a few months ago, he was looking really hot again. Anyway, this was CB’s reply: “I think he still looks good! Should I be ashamed of that?” I didn’t want to say it… but yes. You should be ashamed of it!!

To be fair to poor old Jude, he IS in character. The film is called Dom Hemingway (??) and IMDB describes the plot as such: “After spending 12 years in prison for keeping his mouth shut, notorious safe-cracker Dom Hemingway is back on the streets of London looking to collect what he’s owed.” So don’t go into the film thinking that it’s about Ernest Hemingway making champagne or something (“Dom Hemingway or Dom Perignon? Who can decide?”). What I’m saying is that Jude is supposed to look like a gross mobster-type who just got out of prison. And I still would NOT hit it.

Meanwhile, I just watched the new trailer for Jude’s latest film, Side Effects. It looks… interesting. It’s another Steven Soderbergh film, and it also stars Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but everyone looks really interesting.

I would see that. It’s interesting to see Channing Tatum in this kind of serious ensemble, right? But Channing looks great, as does Jude. Rooney might be the weak link? We’ll see.

I’m also including a photo of Jude’s costar in Dom Hemingway, a woman named Madalina Ghenea. You may also know her as “the chick who is currently boning Gerard Butler.”

Star: Jude Law’s mid-life crisis includes binge-eating, drinking & smoking

Call me crazy, but I actually think Jude Law is looking really good lately. His hair has grown out to a good length (alternate theory: hairplugs), I like the scruff, and his face has filled out a little bit as he’s gotten older. Don’t get me wrong, I totally remember how mind-numbingly beautiful Jude used to be – he was insanely beautiful, literally one of the most beautiful men in the world. But he’s aged. He’s lost some hair. He’s impregnated a few women. He’s cheated on a girlfriend. For where he is in his life right now, I think Jude looks pretty good at 39 years old (he’ll be 40 in December). However, this Star Mag story presupposes the idea that we’ve all been talking about how Jude Law looks like sh-t.

Jude Law was once considered Hollywood’s hottest bachelor, but lately he’s looking more like an unpaid extra. Friends close to Jude have noticed him growing increasingly unhappy and disheveled as he struggles with a midlife crisis.

“He doesn’t know what to do to make himself feel better,” admits an insider, who reveals that the actor was crushed when one of his latest films, 360, bombed. “He’s staying up late, drinking, smoking and eating junk food. It’s all driving him deeper into depression.”

Another problem is his fading sex appeal: “The studios think his movies are flopping because he doesn’t have the pretty-boy appeal he used to. Jude was never concerned with being handsome. But now that he’s starting to age, he’s realizing he was actually very dependent on his looks.”

And, adds the insider, as his looks continue to deteriorate, so does his social life!

“Jude’s greatest vice has always been women, but they are not falling into his lap they way they used to.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Yes, Jude is no longer a pretty boy. So sad. But I doubt it’s bothering him this much – after all, have you seen the way he looks in Anna Karenina? That’s not the appearance of an actor who is obsessed with youth and beauty. As for the other stuff, the “mid-life crisis” part of the story… sure. He’s turning 40 years old in two months. Let him have a mid-life crisis. It’s not the end of the world! And Jude will always have a future in films because he’s always been a talented actor IN SPITE of his beauty. His beauty was never a crutch. As he gets older, he’s going to get more and more work as a character actor, which is probably fine with him.

You know what would make him feel better? Impregnating some random girl.

Jude Law looks awesome lately: is it because of a hair transplant?

Maybe I’m just covering this non-story because I wanted to look at more pretty pictures of Jude Law. Jude looked incredible at last week’s UK premiere of Anna Karenina, and then he continued to look awesome when he was in Toronto last weekend (also for AK). As I briefly discussed in the UK premiere post, I didn’t know what exactly Jude has been doing to look so flat-out awesome these days. Perhaps it’s a new rug (doubtful), perhaps it’s good genes (sure), or perhaps it’s a hair transplant system that works? Ding ding ding! No!! Of course not. Not that it matters, but I was examining these photos, and I think it might be that Jude has just grown out his hair and done a jaunty comb-down. That’s basically what Radar is saying too, shockingly enough:

Don’t believe recent reports that British actor Jude Law has undergone a hair transplant, the follically challenged star is still au natural, an expert tells RadarOnline.com exclusively.

The 39-year-old Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows star was recently pictured with what appeared to be a fuller head of hair – prompting speculation that he could have undergone treatment for his thinning thatch.

However, leading Hollywood hair transplant expert, Dr. Sean Behnam, tells RadarOnline.com that despite the appearance of thicker hair, Jude’s hairline is an unnatural shape and hasn’t been tampered with. But in two years time, if it continues to go untreated, his ‘island’ will disappear!

“I continually get asked by my patients if Jude Law has ever had a hair transplant,” Dr. Behnam reveals. “But, by looking at recent pictures, you can see he hasn’t had one just yet. You can tell his hairline is at an unnatural state; if he was to receive treatment his hairline would be more rounded. My guess is that it’s the angle in which the pictures were taken that gives the appearance he has more hair; he’s got Grade 3 hair loss so it’s still very thin.”

“In my opinion, Jude should definitely consider having a hair transplant now though; it will make him look just as handsome as he was when he was younger. Two years from now, the ‘island’ that you see on the top of his head will completely disappear. If he got the procedure done, it would also likely benefit his career. I’m convinced he would get more leading roles if he fixed this problem. Jude has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of – 80% percent of people I treat for hair loss are in the acting profession. I’d gladly fix Jude’s hair if he wanted a hair transplant,” Dr. Behnam said.

Jude Law showed off his longer locks last week at the Toronto Film Festival promoting his new movie Anna Karenina – an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s 1877 novel – also starring Keira Knightley. Anna Karenina hits theaters on November 16.

[From Radar]

*looks through more photos*

Hm. I need to go to the Gossip Laboratory and crunch some data. In some photos… I would believe that Jude does have some kind of superior hair transplant system working. But in others, maybe he just grew out his existing, natural hair. I don’t know. I’m pretty sure it’s not a rug. And I’m grateful for that too – it would be a shame to see Jude go Full Travolta.

Keira Knightley in pale pink Chanel at the ‘Anna Karenina’ premiere: lovely?

Ah, premiere photos! I was wondering how this fall and winter could compete with The Summer of Gossip, and these pics remind me of why fall is my favorite time – all of the big awards-season hopefuls come out to play, and it’s a great time for premieres and fashion and big red carpet moments. These are photos from last night’s UK premiere of Anna Karenina, which many hope will be one of the first big awards-season attention-getters. It helps that Keira Knightley has joined up once again with director Joe Wright, a much-celebrated collaboration which has previously yielded Atonement (which I hated) and Pride & Prejudice (which I loved). Wright has filled out the Karenina cast with actors like Jude Law, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Matthew Macfadyen, Emily Watson and on and on. It looks good!

Anyway, back to the fashion. In this post, I’m just going to be discussing Anna and Alexei, otherwise known as Keira and Jude Law. Keira wore this pale pink Chanel gown which… ugh. No, now, I don’t hate it completely. I want to fool with the design, make the skirt more flow-y and less like a bell. I want the sheer part of the top to be cut a different way too. So… yes, this is not my style at all, but I “get” that Keira loves her lace and her super-feminine, cake-looking gowns, so I will accept this. It’s not terrible. It’s just her taste.

But can we talk about Jude Law for a second? Dear God, he looks GREAT. What has been doing? What’s changed? Is it the power of a new rug? Maybe some new plugs? Or has his hairline not been enhanced at all? Did he just get a good night’s sleep and maybe a really great facial? And together with Keira… my, they make such an attractive couple. If Jude was a little bit younger and Keira was a little bit older, I would say that these two might have had a really powerful connection. Keira likes ‘em pretty, and Jude likes ‘em small. It would have been a match made in heaven.

Shall we watch the trailer again?

Keira Knightley gets her Russian tragedy on in the ‘Anna Karenina’ trailer: OMG!

I read Anna Karenina years and years ago. I probably read it before I could actually understand the denseness of Leo Tolstoy’s prose, and as such, I really only remember small fragments of the book. I should go back and re-read it, shouldn’t I? I should. Anyway, after I read it, I somehow managed to avoid all of film and television adaptations, so when I go into to see this new version – directed by Joe Wright, adapted for the screen by Tom Stoppard – the story will be fresh and new to me.

I actually think Joe Wright is a very talented director, one of the rare modern directors who can make a period costume drama feel contemporary and fresh. I loved his film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which also starred Keira Knightley (and earned her an Oscar nomination). Wright and Knightley worked together again in Atonement, a film that I ended up hating. It’s not really Keira’s fault or Joe Wright’s fault – I can’t stand Ian McEwan’s writing. The plots of his books are always asinine.

Anyway, back to Anna Karenina. Keira and Joe Wright reunite for their third film together, and this time it’s a doozy. Keira is Anna. Jude Law plays her husband. Aaron Johnson plays Vronsky, Anna’s lover. The cast also includes Matthew Macfadyen (Mr. Darcy from Pride & Prejudice!!), Kelly MacDonald, Emily Watson, Ruth Wilson, Olivia Williams and Michelle Dockery (from Downton Abbey!). Here’s the trailer:

Have I mentioned how much I love a good costume drama? I love a good costume drama. I wish Jane Austen had written more books so there could be more film adaptations of her books. I love watching a corseted Englishwoman, staring longingly at someone with unfortunate sideburns, all by candlelight. So… yes, I will be seeing this movie. I think everybody looks good and interesting. From what little I remember of the book, it was my belief that Anna’s husband is much older than Jude Law’s version…? I thought Alexei was supposed to be, like, 50-something? As for Aaron Johnson… well, I have high hopes for that one. He seems passionate and unhinged. Good boy.
