Emma Watson in cutout Prabal Gurung at the Met Gala: boring or striking?

I love to see what Emma Watson wears on the red carpet because she loves contemporary fashion, she can rock some tiny micro minis, and she takes risks. So I thought that last night was a real missed opportunity for her. She wore this cutout Prabal Gurung wrap-look dress which just fell flat for me. For any other red carpet, for something like a movie premiere or an event, this would have worked well. It fits her like a dream, it highlights her great figure, and I love her sleek hair. This was supposed to be a punk night, and I would have loved to have seen her mix it up with some contrasting patterns or even some wild accessories like Sarah Jessica Parker. As it was, this was too safe. Her only nod to punk is an asymmetric earring. Still, she looks super cute.

Also, in some photos the dress looks navy blue, but I think that’s just due to the flash. It was probably black.

Uma Thurman baffled me in this green Zac Posen fishtail gown. She looked pretty, she really worked that dress, but this is in no way punk. These designers know the theme well ahead of time, they could have worked in a funky belt for her, but she just wore a dress more suited for the Oscars with glamorous styling and classic accessories. Very pretty, but staid and not mixing it up at all.

Julianne Hough at least tried a little in this reinterpretation of a strapless princess gown, from TopShop. Kaiser covered Nicole Richie’s TopShop gown, and both women did have punky looks. I like the geometric spider web-type print on the gown, the irregular hemline with a black tulle underskirt, her studded shoes and her black and white manicure. She even had some cool overdone eyelashes paired with nude makeup. Whoever styled Julianne did a great job. I think she’s wearing a spider ring too!

As we heard would happen, Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn made their red carpet debut as a couple. All I can do it smirk and shake my head. How is this plain white dress with gold drop earrings “punk”? Something nice: she toned down the raccoon eye makeup and her hair looks pretty.

Did Ryan Seacrest buy a $3 mill home for Julianne Hough so she won’t talk?

Ryan Seacrest Julianne Hough

If your response to the Ryan Seacrest/Julianne Hough breakup was anything like mine, then you probably yelled, “Friday afternoon, really? Not too surprising. Well, I thought she’d stick it out for another year at least.” The split occurred in mid-March after Julianne and Ryan had dated for over two years, and it seems the breakup is sticking. In the aftermath, Tom Cruise may or may not have called Julianne, who flirted up a storm with Alex Pettyfer at Coachella.

Now comes news that Ryan has basically accepted the breakup, or at least that is what one would infer by this week’s Star story that says Ryan is “trying to buy Julianne’s silence” in the shadow of their failed relationship. How so? By purchasing a $3 million house for Julianne so that she’ll keep her mouth shut about his … um, fetishes. Wait, what?

Ryan Seacrest Julianne Hough

Ryan Seacrest’s checking account gets a lot of activity when he breaks up with a girl. A former pal of the “American Idol” host reveals that despite his squeaky-clean image, Ryan, 38, has some unusual appetites in the sack — so to avoid airing his dirty laundry, he coughs up the cash to keep his exes happy … and quiet. After recently ending his relationship with Julianne Hough, 25, friends say the media mogul bought her a $3 million home as a parting gift. “Ryan is a great boyfriend and an even better ex-boyfriend,” spills the pal. “Not that Julianne would ever badmouth him, but now she wouldn’t dream of saying he was anything but a great guy.”

[From Star, print edition, May 13, 2013]

Man, that part about Ryan’s “unusual appetites in the sack” has really got me giggling. Do these appetites have anything to do with a closet? No, not that type of closet. I clearly meant a closet full of sex toys, ala Russell Brand. Then again, Julianne was still sort of playing the virginity card last summer. Oh, nevermind.

I sort of hope this story is true though because a $3 million house is an excellent return on a two-year job relationship. I would probably put up with Seacrest for a few years too for that kind of payoff.

Julianne Hough flirted & ‘rubbed up’ on Alex Pettyfer at Coachella: new couple?

Julianne Hough

Just last month, Julianne Houth and Ryan Seacrest called it quits after two (or so) years together. In the immediate aftermath, Julianne has wasted no time getting out there and hanging at the Chateau Marmont in Ryan’s absence. Both Julianne and Ryan have been mum on the subject of their breakup, but she has definitely been the more visible of the two since the requisite announcement. Of course, last weekend saw the Coachella festival arrive with much fanfare and unhygienic behavior on the part of many starlets and their male counterparts. Julianne was front and present, and so (interestingly enough) was Alex Pettyfer, who is pictured below in the company of none other than Connor “DJ C Squared” Cruise.

Alex Pettyfer

This photograph of Alex and Connor in each other’s presence is obviously quite notable because of the Scientology connection; after all, Alex was once engaged to Riley Keough, who is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley. Then there’s my tasteless question of whether or not Tom Cruise has called Julianne after her breakup with Seacrest, which brings the CO$ connection full circle. To add even more creepiness to the equation, Page Six has printed a story about Julianne getting busy and “holding hands with a hunky Australian mystery man named Tommy” over Coachella weekend. If nobody minds, I’m going to just pretend Page Six was making sh-t up and assume that Julianne was otherwise single during Coachella because Life & Style claims an exclusive story about Julianne getting all friendly and flirty with Pettyfer at the festival. Mind you, this is the same misunderstood doucheboy who (unlike everyone else) fights with Channing Tatum and also has a “thank you” tattoo above his crotch. In other words, has Julianne discovered a newfound taste for bad boys? Here are the details:

Julianne Hough isn’t one to sit at home and sulk after a breakup. Since splitting from Ryan Seacrest less than a month ago, Julianne has been partying all over LA — and this past weekend she brought the party to Coachella music festival in Indio, Calif., where she cozied up to Magic Mike’s Alex Pettyfer.

“Julianne and Alex were flirting a lot,” a partygoer tells Life & Style of the dancer’s flirty behavior with the actor at the Armani Exchange Neon Carnival. “She was drinking vodka cocktails all night and by midnight she was standing on the back of a couch with her friends, dancing like crazy and rubbing up against him,” the source dishes.

And the blonde bombshell is clearly single and ready to mingle! A day earlier, on Apr. 12 at the ShopBazaar Brunch and Pool Party, an eyewitness tells Life & Style, on newsstands now: “Julianne was gabbing away with friends saying she’s so excited to start dating again.” And when ex Ryan came up, Julianne was quick to assure guests that things between them were definitely over, overheard saying, “That deal is done.”

[From Life & Style]

Julianne certainly isn’t subtle, is she? I mean, it takes guts to describe the demise of her relationship as “that deal is done.” Deal = contract?

In any event, I suppose it’s really over between Julianne and Seacrest, so I suppose it wouldn’t do much harm for her to truly flirt it up with Alex Pettyfer. Obviously, the dude is a douche, but he looks like he’d be super good in bed, doesn’t he? After the past couple of years, Julianne might just need a good roll in the sack.

Has Tom Cruise given Julianne Hough a call yet after her breakup? Just curious

Tom Cruise Julianne Hough

Ever since the news broke over the weekend that Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest called it quits after two years together, I’ve been thinking a lot about Tom Cruise. True, I usually think about him a lot, but this is different because I’m pretty sure my favorite OT Level VIII whackjob went on high alert with this breakup news. Tom absolutely detests being a single man (as opposed to one of the “Single Ladies”), and ever since Katie Holmes filed for divorce last summer, Tom’s been a lost little boy. Sure, he’s had an alleged dirty-dancing partner in the form of a 26-year-old NYC restaurant manager, and he’s been cruising for da ladies, but Tom’s not really happy being silly and icky in nightclubs.

When Tom and Katie divorced last year, I couldn’t wait to see who he would try and date next. You know Tom’s ego won’t let him settle for an unknown Scientologist even though that’s obviously the best match for him. Immediately, I thought of Julianne Hough but then relented because she was with Seacrest at the time. Now she’s not taken, and I would be willing to bet that Tom thought back to those days when Julianne gave him a lap dance in Rock of Ages (that scene was left on the cutting room floor). Julianne even played the game during that movie’s promotional rounds by declaring that Tom’s portrayal of Stacee Jaxx was “the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.” Oh really?

Tom Cruise Julianne Hough

Now whether or not Julianne would actually go for Tom is another story. But I wouldn’t be surprised if his people immediately began to try very hard to set up a date (and a first audit session) as soon as she and Seacrest announced their relationship’s demise.

Make no mistake, Julianne has been on Tom’s list of candidates ever since Katie dumped him. On paper, Julianne is perfect for him. She’s cute. She’s not too tall. Her acting career will never approach levels of Tom mania (which was one of Nicole Kidman’s most egregious “sins” in that marriage). She has no scandals in her past. And who knows? She could be …. contract friendly.

Ryan Seacrest & Julianne Hough broke up after over two years together

Good lord, when was this announced? Like, at midnight on a Friday? That always signals something shady, in my opinion, but we’ll see. Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough are over, which is sad if you really thought they were an authentic couple. However, it’s good news for people who are really tired of Ryan using his connections to make his completely boring girlfriend “happen” in Hollywood. Is that mean? I’m sorry if it’s mean. I don’t hate Julianne Hough or anything, I just think her rapid rise to the B-list of Hollywood is nonsensical given her lack of star power, charisma or talent. Now that was harsh! I apologize.

After dating for more than two years, Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough have decided to take a break and are living apart, sources close to the couple confirm to PEOPLE.

The sources maintain that busy work schedules proved to be a great challenge for them both, although they are still in regular contact and remain friends.

Reps for Hough and Seacrest declined to comment.

The American Idol host and media mogul, 38, and former Dancing with the Stars pro and actress, 24, have spoken candidly in the past about juggling career and a relationship.

“It’s a hard thing to do, especially when you’re so caught up in your work and bettering yourself,” Hough recently told PARADE. “I think at the end of the day you have to find a balance with what’s really important.”

After ringing in the new year, the duo enjoyed a romantic getaway in St. Bart’s days later.

[From People]

Sources told Us Weekly that “their schedules were too hectic” and “It just got to be too much. I think they both just sort of knew they couldn’t do it anymore. The travel and lifestyle got to be too much. Who knows if this is just for now, but I think this is for good.” If that sounded weird because you’re like, “Seriously? Julianne works all the time?” you’re in good company. After mysterious sources claimed that, another source told Us Weekly that it was Ryan in particular who “works all the time” and “He never sleeps.” Julianne is said to want a “more low-key life,” which I’m guessing means something like “On to the next one!”

Julianne Hough in Alberta Ferretti at the ‘Safe Haven’ premiere: lovely or fug?

These are new pics of Julianne Hough at last night’s premiere of Safe Haven, that stupid-looking Nicolas Sparks-adaptation. I can’t decide if I think people are going to see this film in droves (Valentine’s Day, romance, etc) or if moviegoers are going to continue their total rejection of Julianne Hough as a film actress, regardless of what movie roles Ryan Seacrest buys for her. Julianne wore this Alberta Ferretti dress which I could have sworn was Marchesa, which sucks for Ferretti, right? The dress is pretty enough. It’s fine. I really dislike her hair though! Her hair is really bugging me and I can’t even figure out why.

More photos… Estella Warren was at the premiere. Remember her? Yeah, that’s what this red carpet was like. I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but what’s up with Estella’s face? Is that Botox or something else? A weird nose job too?

Fergie was actually my favorite look on the carpet. She’s wearing Gucci, and it’s cute on her. Her face is looking less plastic these days too. Also including: Josh Duhamel, Fergie’s husband and the star of this mess of a film. His suit is incredibly blue.

Hey, remember Johnathon Schaech? He was called “the next big thing” in the 1990s. He and Skeet Ulrich. And now where are they? Anyway, Schaech’s face reminds me of Estella Warren’s. God, this was a horrible red carpet!

Ryan Seacrest wants a family with Julianne Hough: “she’s the best part of every day”

When Ryan Seacrest, 38, and Julianne Hough, 24, first got together a little over two years ago, a lot of us thought it was a publicity stunt. I remember that he took her shopping for luxury goods in Paris and made sure the paparazzi were there to document their PDA-heavy outing. The more time that passes, the more they come across like a regular, committed couple. It also helps that we’re getting to know Julianne and that she seems like she’s much wiser and more mature than her years. During his Golden Globe red carpet coverage, Ryan gushed about Julianne’s (goofy) dress a few times, and he was genuine about it. It’s like he was looking for excuses to talk about her.

In a new interview with Chelsea Handler, Ryan continued to praise his girlfriend, calling her “the best part of every day” and admitting that they were considering starting a family together.

“She’s so beautiful…stunning,” the American Idol host said about his girlfriend of two years, Julianne Hough, on Chelsea Lately tonight when Handler flashed a pic of the glamorous duo at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

Agreeing with Handler’s assessment of Hough as a “great girl,” Seacrest called her “phenomenal.”

“She’s the best part of every day,” he said—and, since Seacrest never sleeps, that’s a long day to be the highlight of!

Asked if he wants to get married and have a family, the 38-year-old multihyphenate said, “We both do,” but that the 25-year-old [sic] Hough—not Handler—would be the first one to know when that’s about to happen.

They touched briefly on American Idol, too, Seacrest diplomatically saying that Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have “come to work and disagreed about a thing or two, here or there, but now, today, they’re fine.”

“It just sort of depends,” he added, a master of ceremonies, as always.

[From E! Online]

In the video segment posted on E!, Chelsea ribs Ryan and tells him that she’s heard that the decor in his new house “is very feminine.” She makes constant references to the rumors that he bats for the other team. It’s a testament to Ryan’s personality that he didn’t get defensive or deny anything. Plus he practically owns E! He could easily tell Chelsea or The Soup to stop making fun of him, but he accepts the ribbing and doesn’t pull rank. When Chelsea introduced the topic of Ryan’s girlfriend, she said “I believe this relationship, actually” later adding that unlike Ryan “I don’t have to prove to anyone that I’m straight.” That’s Chelsea for ya. (Also, Chelsea says in the interview that Julianne is 25, but she’s not. She doesn’t turn 25 until July.)

As far as Ryan starting a family, I just get the sense that the dude is way too busy to think about it now. He has a radio show, he’s on Idol, he produces multiple reality shows. He looked so tired on Chelsea Lately. He probably can’t even consider having kids at this point, but at least he has plenty of time for that with Julianne. She’s young and seems too busy with her career too.

Sofia Vergara in black Michael Cinco at the Globes: vavavoom or meh?

Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara brought her usual look to the Golden Globes red carpet last night. She wore a slinky black mermaid dress by Michael Cinco, and she stated, “He’s a new designer for me, I’ve never heard of him. But I saw the dress. Usually I try to stay away from black but I thought it was amazing.” Sure, Sofia looks amazing here, but she looks like she always does. I hate to sound like a downer, but Sofia does this type of dress — the same exact bustline with sequins and a mermaid or fish tail — all the time. So yes, she’s beautiful but very boring once again. I’d love for her to try out something new and adventurous (for her).

Sofia’s accessories also fit with her usual shtick. The diamonds are by Lorraine Schwartz, and the flat-ironed hair and makeup all scream “Sofia!” It’s one thing to have a distinctive style, but I’d love to see her in a short, fun dress with strappy sandals, a dearth of flashy diamonds, and a cute bracelet with understated makeup and cascading curls. Just anything besides the usual Sofia look.

Sofia Vergara

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough looked like Rumpelstiltskin vomited all over the king’s daughter’s poufy white ball gown. This is a Monique Lhuillier number that is just way too dramatic (especially with that eye makeup), but Julianne really thought it looked great on the rack: “I have got to wear that.” She completed the look with a Ferragamo clutch, and jewelry made from an actual carob beatle and stick insect. Gross. Also, her hair looks like “The Miley” without the haircut.

Julianne Hough

Olivia Munn

Olivia Munn wore a strapless Giorgio Armani dress that looked like separates but was really just one unfortunate piece. The top part of the dress is almost fully encrusted with turquoise on top of navy, and to me, this is a pretty unflattering look. Oliva should have gone with a sleeker dress. She accessorized with an Armani clutch and heels as well plus a Chopard choker necklace, which are all very meh to me. Her face also looks really shiny and frozen. Too much botox, baby.

Olivia Munn

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore a Vera Wang ball gown that made her seem a lot larger than her actual size. Acutally, I think this was a Very Wang organza tablecloth. Does Vera do house decor? Well, she certainly has an eye for it from the looks of this awful dress. Julia’s makeup also looks really washed out.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie confuses me. She wore a powder blue Naeem Kaan dress that was very demure in comparison to those trashy years that she was better known as Paris Hilton’s unfortunate sidekick. To be certain, I do appreciate the grown-up attitude that Nicole has adopted, but this dress is just strange on her. It would have looked okay with blonde hair, but the caramel brown locks and the day-glo makeup make this whole outfit look a little bit drag queeny. No offense to drag queens. Some of them have great style.

Emma Watson in Peter Pilotto at the People’s Choice Awards: too weird or hot?

At last night’s People’s Choice Awards, Emma Watson took home the “favorite dramatic artist” award, beating out Charlize Theron, Keira Knightley, Meryl Streep, and Rachel McAdams, none of whom came. (Here’s a full list of winners.) Emma wore Peter Pilotto, in a style that she’s rocked successfully in the past. Go here and here to see her wearing very similar dresses on the red carpet. Emma (and/or her stylist) loves short, contemporary dresses with bold prints and architectural designs. This dress is just a step too far, though, with some very ugly cutouts along the bodice, a much too-short skirt in a cacophonous pattern, and matchy-matchy cutout shoes. Plus, her makeup looks amateurish. She often gets it right but not this time.

The lovely Julianne Hough was in a cute Tony Ward couture sequin dress. This dress is a bit cutesy with the bouncy skirt, but I do love the celestial colors and how comfortable Julianne looks. Her hair and makeup are very elegant, but fun. She just looks like she’s having a good time. I also like how her shoes don’t compete with her dress.

Cloe Moretz was somewhat shocking in a bright yellow Simone Rochas dress with a floral embroidered pattern. She looks like she took a bath in highlighter! She’s only 15 though, and at that age I also wore a lot of neon colors. (They were in!)

And finally, host Kaley Cuoco was a little too precious in Christian Siriano with matching heels. Maybe with different shoes this would have worked, but it looks a little too “bridesmaid” to me.

This is what Kaley wore to the press room red carpet, and it’s not much better. I do like her hair and makeup though.

Julianne Hough’s claims of childhood abuse have angered her host family

Last week, Julianne Hough revealed in a new interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine that she had been abused as a child. Julianne plays an abuse victim in her new movie, Safe Haven, which is out in the US on February 14. She seemed to think it was the right time to tell her story, and it rang true. At the age of 10, Julianne went with her older brother, fellow DWTS alum Derek Hough, from her home in Utah, to London to train as a dancer with the Ballas family. (The parents of DWTS professional Mark Ballas.) Hough told Cosmopolitan that “While I was in London, I was abused, mentally, physically, everything.” She declined to name her abuser, but claimed that he told her “if I ever went back to the United States, three things were going to happen. One: I was going to amount to nothing. Two: I was going to work at Whataburger. And three: I was going to end up a slut.” Whataburger is an American burger chain, so some people believed that she was giving a hint as to her abuser’s identity, without naming him outright.

Star Magazine [via Radar] has a new story claiming that Corky Ballas, Mark Ballas’ father, is outraged that Julianne claimed that she was abused while under his care. Here’s their story:

Mark’s father Corky and his ex-wife Shirley “are livid with Julianne over suggestions that she was abused in the U.K. under their care,” a source close to the Ballas family told Star. “At Corky’s own expense, he took Julianne into his home and turned her into a world-class dancer.

“Now, he feels like he has been ambushed.”

The Footloose beauty, a source said, interpreted Corky’s encouragement as abuse, and wound up leaving England prematurely.

“At the end of her time in London, they were barely speaking,” the source said. “One thing’s for sure — she really opened a can of worms.

“The Ballas family and the Houghs are up in arms.”

The full story is in the new issue of Star, on newsstands Thursday.

[From Radar Online]

Here’s what gets me about this story. If it’s true that Star has a source close to Corky Ballas, that’s a weak argument that Julianne “interpreted Corky’s encouragement as abuse.” The phrasing bothers me, as does the claim that Corky “took Julianne into his home and turned her into a world-class dancer.” He didn’t turn her into “a world class dancer,” she worked hard and achieved that while being coached by him. This story is bothersome on many levels, and I believe Julianne. She surely put a lot of thought into it before she decided to reveal what happened to her, and she didn’t name names.
