Rooney Mara versus Kate Mara: who looked cuter at Kate’s premiere?

Does anyone else feel kind of bad for Kate Mara? She’s Rooney Mara’s older sister (older by two years) and it wasn’t that long ago that Kate Mara was the sister posed for a big Hollywood breakout. Kate was the one working consistently in films and television, and she had more name recognition. Then Rooney scored a small part in The Social Network, which led to the role of a lifetime as Lisbeth Salander in the American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which led to magazine covers and fame and money and an Oscar nomination and now people are like “Kate who?”

So these are new photos of the premiere of House of Cards, which is a new TV show starring Kevin Spacey, and Kate has a supporting part. Rooney came out to support her sister, which… is nice, I guess? Kate came to the Oscars last year to support Rooney, and I guess they have a history of showing up for each other’s red carpets and stuff. But it still feels somewhat passive-aggressive on Rooney’s part. Like, “Oh, congrats on your little TV show, I’m about to film a sequel to my Oscar-nominated lead role, haha.” These two just seem more like Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine as opposed to… like, the Olsen sisters.

As for fashion, Rooney is wearing a really terrible Band of Outsiders jumpsuit. Are those Hammer pants? Her outfit looks like something Justin Bieber would wear. Maybe that’s Rooney’s gift to her sister – Rooney will passive-aggressively walk Rooney’s red carpet, but Rooney will make sure that she wears something awful. Kate’s dress is Dolce & Gabbana – it’s sparkly and meh. It would have been a much better look without the white lace hem details.

PS… Is it just me or do both Mara girls have terrible posture? It’s beyond the “hipster slump”.

Kerry Washington in Vivienne Westwood at the Emmys: amazing or overdone?

Kerry Washington was one of the best dressed at the Emmy’s last night in an incredible slightly draped sequin Vivienne Westwood. I loved the shape of this gown and how flattering and even slightly demure it looked. Her hair and makeup were perfection, but on camera especially her face looked a little supernatural to me, to put it nicely. She was too toxed, and when she talked to Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet I really noticed how odd she looked. Maybe it will settle. Either way she was gorgeous.

Kate Mara of “American Horror Story” also went with the silver and gunmetal trend that we saw last night. (We’ll be including other actresses in the color throughout our fashion posts.) Unlike Kerry, Kate’s Badgley Mischka dress wasn’t a solid hit. I found it somewhat fussy with the silver floral design and the little petal-like attachments. It was pretty and feminine, though, and her makeup and hair looked almost elfin with the dress. You can see what her stylist was going for.

Kate’s costar Jessica Lange won best supporting actress for her portrayal of Constance on AHS. I enjoyed Lange’s acceptance speech and got the impression that she’s a seasoned professional. She just seems so together and comfortable with the business. This is her second award for AHS, she previously won a SAG for best actress. It was also her second Emmy, she won an earlier Emmy in 2009 for Grey Gardens. As for her orange, loose draped gown I liked it. It wasn’t fabulous, but she was. I liked her gold accessories too.

Moving on to actresses from one of my favorite shows, “Breaking Bad,” we have Anna Gunn in a complicated red dress with layers of asymmetric fabric. The dress is ok, there’s too much going on with it but I do like the modern neckline and fit. It’s Anna’s styling that falls flat here. Her hairstylist slicked back her hair while trying to leave it full-looking, and her makeup artist went for a nude look that needs more color. With different hair and makeup she would have looked as striking as she does on the show. Anna was nominated for supporting actress in a drama, which went to Maggie Smith for “Downton Abbey.” I hope Anna wins next year, she’s so talented.

Betsy Brandt of “Breaking Bad” also suffered, more visibly so, from bad styling. She didn’t even have a nice dress to fall back on. That thing looks straight out of the 80s. I’ll say something nice – I love that she wore a purple dress, since her character on BB, Marie, also loves purple. You see it in her home on the show and in the clothes Marie wears. Betsy looks like she had the same hairdresser as Ashley Judd and the same makeup artist as Connie Britton.

I’m including Aaron Paul in there with his fiance, Lauren Parsekian. Aaron won best supporting actor for the second time for BB. He was so excited and surprised, and he’s so obviously in love with Lauren. He thanked her profusely at the end of his speech and I think she mouthed “I love you.” These two were super cute together.

Also Bryan Cranston and RJ Mitte of BB. Cranston needs more facial hair. He is not doing it for me here, which is weird because I even get hot for Mr. White. Should I be ashamed of that? Oh I should mention the silly Breaking Bad Andy Griffith Show mashup segment at the Emmys. It was funny at first, but ended up seeming a little dumb and dull, which is how I found most of the skits at the Emmys. Maybe I was just jaded because I was up late.
