Katie Holmes’ shopping allowance: $125,000. A month.

intouchweekly

This week’s In Touch Weekly is reasonably standard fare – Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise are living separate lives, they don’t sleep in the same room, and add a dash of Xenu, and you’ve got the same breakup story we’ve seen the past four years. However, there are some details in this story that are especially good (excerpts courtesy of Jezebel):

*There’s a book about the Church of Scientology that hasn’t even been completed yet. In the book, there are several chapters devoted to Tom and Katie. The book will reveal things like…

*Katie and Tom sleep in separate bedrooms. SHOCK. You know what’s even more shocking? They weren’t on the same continent in weeks – Tom has been in Europe while Katie filmed in LA. She only recently brought Suri to Prague, where Tom is currently filming. So, yes, separate bedrooms, but they forgot “separate countries”.

*The book reveals Tom’s odd quirk: Tom looks down on people who get colds or flu. Because it’s totally their fault.

*Tom and Katie have a full-time Scientologist staff with 18-hour work days, and the Church has staff members who are just dedicated to Tom Cruise. “They spare no expense with him,” says a source.

*And finally: Katie’s shopping allowance is $125,00 A MONTH. That’s $1.5 million a year, just on clothes.

The clothing allowance thing is what gets me the most. Katie has some of the worst style of any high-profile female celebrity out there. In my opinion, her styling is consistently worse than Angelina Jolie’s. Katie is worse than Jessica Simpson. Worse than whatever tacky sh-t Rachel Zoe can come up with. The fact that Katie pays SO MUCH for her clothes is both sad and funny. You really can’t buy taste – and Katie is proof positive.

Katie Holmes looks pretty, lucid, bumpy & happy on set with Adam Sandler

fp_5918102_holmes_katie_bel_101910

I’m in a difficult place – we have all of these new photos of Katie Holmes on the set of Jack & Jill, that film where Adam Sandler plays both Jack AND his sister Jill, and there really isn’t any good Katie Holmes story to put with these photos. Shall I make something up? Here: is that a baby bump I spy? Or is that just her normal stomach? Honestly, Katie looks like she’s lost some weight, and this is the best she’s looked in months. No zombie eyes or crap-tastic fashion. Whoever decided to put Katie in this dress did good. It’s slimming, and it doesn’t look like a really expensive couture turd.

Should we talk about where Katie is in her career? She’s playing second (third) fiddle to Adam Sandler and Adam Sandler’s hot tranny mess. Honestly, though, this is the kind of career I expected from her back on Dawson’s Creek. The girl wasn’t some shining gift to the profession of acting, although she’s given up the chance at having a really solid career when she married Tom, and when she walked away from The Dark Knight. It seems like she’s trying to get on some kind of better career track though, after years of wandering through such flops as Mad Money. She’s got a handful of solid-looking projects already in the can – that horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, and the Kennedy miniseries (where she plays Jackie) for the History Channel. So is Katie taking some tips from Nicole Kidman’s new career plan? Rule 1: Make an Adam Sandler film. Rule 2: Stop looking and acting like a zombie. Wow… those rules really do apply to both of them!

I caption this photo, “Why Xenu, WHY?”

Katie Holmes won’t have another baby because Tom hasn’t made her a star

starmag

Before I get to Star Magazine’s “Zomg, Xenu broke them up!” cover, I’d just like to begin with this little story from Life & Style – according to eyewitnesses, Katie Holmes let Suri walk into Toronto’s Sephora and “picked out more than $1300 worth of products.” Which Katie then bought for her. Do you believe that? I do. What I don’t believe is that Suri understood what she was getting. She probably just picked out the prettiest bottles and Katie just bought everything like a zombie.

Okay, now for Star’s story. Honestly, this seems like a filler – like Star didn’t know that there was going to be three big breakups this week, so that just went with a standby TomKat story. The basic gist is that Tom and Katie are fighting about babies and renegotiating their marriage contract and face-time with Xenu.

Katie ran off the set of her new movie, after getting a “distressing phone call” from Tom’s sister. We don’t know what the call was about, however.

Katie visited Tom in Prague on the set of the new Mission Impossible, and wanted to spend a relaxing night in the hotel, but Tom insisted they go to dinner with some Scientology “big wigs.” They slept in separate rooms that night. DUN DUN DUN.

They had another fight later, about her not wanting to try and have a second baby. Tom accused Katie of reneging on her marriage contract. Katie reminded Tom that he’d promised her a movie deal. He snapped that her acting wasn’t good enough! Then she stormed off and walked the streets of Prague alone. She’s unhappy, but she doesn’t want to do anything rash — she’s afraid Tom will somehow end up with custody of Suri.

[From Star via Jezebel]

Wouldn’t you love to hear that fight? Tom: “You need to have another baby. We shall prepare the Xenu incubator.” Katie: “I don’t wanna. I wanna do a movie! You said you would make me a star!” Tom: “You’re not good enough, hon. Now spread your legs while I go get the baster so we can make another little Travolta/Hubbard spawn.” Katie: “What should I wear?” Tom: “As much as possible, please.”

Jennifer Garner wins, Katie Holmes loses at fashionable women’s event

fp_5820814_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

Perhaps “wins” is a strong word. I was going through the photos from Variety’s 2nd Annual Power of Women Luncheon held yesterday, Thursday, and… Jennifer Garner is definitely one of the best dressed women there. And that ain’t sayin’ much. I do think Jennifer’s little librarian outfit is cute though – but some of the ladies were wearing cocktail/business/formal-wear, and Garner just looks like a cute secretary. Ah, well. At least she didn’t bust out her drag queen styles.

fp_5820803_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

In any case, Jennifer looked way better than the parade of fug from some of the other ladies. Some of the dresses were not so great… and sometimes it was just bad makeup, bad styling, bad lighting, bad angles, or something else… more sinister. Like a parade of Botox? Get a bunch of Hollywood power ladies in a room, and There Will Be Botox. And no one will be drinking anyone’s milkshake. Because they’re lactose intolerant. Let’s get it started with Katie Holmes. Now… it could have been cute. But I hate the fit in the bodice, and I hate her makeup and I hate the way she’s standing with her legs spread in every photo.

fp_5820857_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

fp_5820858_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

Look who lost her baby weight? Ah, I love Amy Adams. Such a cutie. I like this look, honestly. My only complaint is that she looks exhausted, but she probably is!

fp_5820829_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

Maria Bello, don’t do this to yourself! Wear your hair down.

fp_5820834_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

I’ve come to the conclusion that Anne Hathaway has a color problem. What I mean is that she doesn’t seem to know what colors will look garish with her coloring. This goes for her makeup as well as her clothes. I don’t hate this dress – but it doesn’t do anything for her, because the color is off.

fp_5820746_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

Eva Mendes… yikes. The Botox is strong in this one.

fp_5820757_rij_variety_luncheon_093010

AnnaLynne McCord just thinks she’s the hottest thing ever, doesn’t she? Meanwhile, I only know her because this is how she poses for every photo, candid or red carpet.

Katie Holmes’ look: tweaked, drugged or channeling Jackie Kennedy?

fp_5740579_holmes_katie_aar_091610

Or weight loss? Or Xenu? Or her spirit is broken? All of the above? Could be. But she does look different, doesn’t she? I could swear her face is different, and it’s not just a weight loss thing. I can’t put my finger on it. Anyway, this is Katie Holmes in NYC yesterday, on her way to the Calvin Klein show, where she will no doubt pick up the entire collection, then tweak it slightly with some budget lace and bad stitching and use it for her own collection, Holmes and Yang. It’s called “The Victoria Beckham Method”. And it seems like the House of Calvin Klein is fine with that.

Katie Holmes has been described as the ”perfect” Calvin Klein girl by the legendary fashion house. Katie Holmes is the “perfect” Calvin Klein girl.

The fashion house’s Women’s Creative Director Francisco Costa is a huge fan of the stunning actress and was thrilled when she was in the front row at the Calvin Klein Collection show yesterday (16.09.10) at New York Fashion Week.

He said: “We met her before she was married. She’s the perfect Calvin girl.”

Speaking about the show, Katie – who is married to Tom Cruise – told People magazine: “I just loved it. There were so many pieces I would love to have. He did an amazing job. I loved the simplicity. I loved the colours he’s chosen, the fabrics and his simple elegance.”
As well as Katie being impressed with the show, Francisco was pleased with the final result.

He said: “It was more about the body, the fabric, and obviously interesting cuts. The new field for me is softness, and making that very sharp and crisp, which is much more difficult. It was challenging, fun, much more fluid, elongated. We started in resort with that mid-calf length.so it was a step forward.”

Katie – who was dressed in a cream-coloured Calvin Klein dress – admits she may use the show as inspiration for her own clothing range. She said: “I was very inspired.”

[From Contact Music]

Why are all of these fashion professionals always going on and on about Katie’s style? She generally looks like ten kinds of hell, although I will give her credit for starting a few trends, mostly involving pants (whatever). Also, Fame Pictures calls her a “fashion icon.” I would bash them for that, but they are not the first to refer to Katie as some kind of style icon. I think those people are smoking crack.

Katie Holmes is a terrible zombie model for Marie Claire

katie1

My GOD Katie Holmes is horrible model. I have just gone through Marie Claire’s October pictorial, starring their cover girl Katie Holmes, and this might be one of the worst ever. It’s not really Marie Claire’s fault. It’s Katie’s. She doesn’t know how to carry herself, she doesn’t know how to pose, and she looks old and exhausted and slumpy and like a f-cking zombie in nearly every photo. And you know Marie Claire probably used the best shots too – that’s how bad it is. Can you imagine the shots that were rejected? Go here for the full slideshow, but the best (worst?) shots are the bottom of this post.

Anyway, Katie was also interviewed for Marie Claire! Xenu lets her speak for herself and everything. It’s predictably kiss-ass (“Katie Holmes doesn’t really walk; she glides…. I find myself getting distracted by her cheekbones and her soft but determined voice.”) but there are a few (butt?) nuggets of interest. The full online excerpt is here, and here are the highlights:

Producer Jennifer Todd, on Katie Holmes as producer/actress on The Romantics: “She really was a producer. It wasn’t just a credit given to her. She’s been relentless in trying to help get this film out. She has a real love of cinema and a real passion for seeing a project through from start to finish.”

On The Romantics: “I just look for characters I can relate to. I loved this role because it felt like these are things that people go through,” Holmes tells me. “It has friendship, it has heartbreak, it has the past coming back into your life. I also liked the friendship between Lila and Laura because it’s tricky between women — you are either a friend to women or you are not.” Holmes continues, “That stuff for me is very real. I have three sisters, I went to an all-girls academy. I feel like I know girls and know how we fight, and [author] Galt really nailed it. I just thought the movie felt very true.”

Doing the film festival rounds: “The enthusiasm that existed around this project was just awesome,” she says. “We all get together now and do dinners. We really did become great friends, and that’s rare — to continue those friendships.”

What’s it like being (the third) Mrs. Tom Cruise? “It’s really exciting. Tom’s as big at home as he is on the movie screen. He’s so passionate about everything, whatever he’s doing. When he’s being a dad, he’s right there; he’s giving it his all. It’s inspiring and it’s fun. It’s an amazing life, but we always remind ourselves of how incredibly lucky we are.”

On their date-nights: They visit each other on set when they can — Holmes is currently working in Toronto — and they do manage to have date nights, usually screening a current movie in their Beverly Hills home, followed by “probably a two-hour discussion about what we thought.” They also play a lot of Scrabble. Holmes, always the straight-A student, is a formidable opponent. “But Tom’s really good at it,” she admits. “It’s all strategy. I think when I’m back in Toronto, I’m going to bring my dictionary and study.”

On being apart: Despite their hectic schedules, they’ve never spent more than a week-and-a-half without seeing each other.

More kids? “Maybe in a couple of years, but right now I want to make sure I’m really there for Suri. I’m the youngest in my family — my closest sister is five years older than me, and the next one is nine years ahead of me, so I was a bit of an only child, and I liked it! I liked having all of my mom’s attention, and sometimes I think I still do.”

On Suri, who Katie says is being home-schooled (by Xenu?): “We travel a lot, and so for me, it’s keeping a daily schedule for Suri that never changes,” Holmes tells me. “We wake up, and we do the same thing. She does her chores. I think it’s very important. If she doesn’t get her chores done, I notice she’s not really herself. She has to make her bed, she has to take her dishes to the sink, she has to put her clothes in the laundry — you know, that basic stuff. I try to do what my mom did for me … just spending time with her, making doll clothes and planting in the garden … When Suri comes to the set, we have art projects, and I just try to keep her busy and inspired.”

[From Marie Claire]

If her life is really this good – and honestly, she does make it sound very nice and low-key – then why has she aged so drastically, and why does she wander around like a drugged zombie so much of the time? I just think… damn, even with all of her money (Tom’s money), I still wouldn’t want her life.

Katie Holmes: Suri won’t let me leave unless she approves of my clothes

Katie Holmes cheerfully leaves the David Letterman show in NYC, NY on September 7, 2010 in a classic, retro inspired leopard print jacket. Fame Pictures, Inc

Yesterday, we got to see some new photos of a relatively lift-less Tom Cruise and a heel-wearing Katie Holmes out and about in New York City. I put the photos up because Tom and Katie haven’t been making many public outings lately – especially public outings together, so it was a special occasion. In my mind, I thought cynically, “Gee, I wonder why we’re getting these photos? They aren’t promoting anything.” Turns out, I have a great reason to be cynical: they are promoting something. Well, Katie is. She’s promoting The Romantics, that Big Chill/St. Elmo’s Fire-looking pretty white people who knew each other in college come together for a angst-ridden reunion romantic dramedy. It comes out this Friday. As such, Katie did a pretaped interview for Regis & Kelly, large chunks of the interview have already come out. My favorite is the quote about Suri not letting her mother out of the house without ordering her mom to wear certain things.

When Katie sat down, Regis Philbin pulled out the New York Magazine with her on the cover. Katie has been working hard playing the role of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the upcoming film The Kennedys, and according to Kelly, she’s got the fashion to back it up! The actress has a new fashion company, Holmes & Yang, which she says has been carried at Barneys and Maxfield in L.A.

“It’s been really fun and it’s been really fun to play Jackie,” Katie said of her film, which is shooting in Toronto. “She’s such an amazing woman and such an amazing artist. She’s incredible.”

What surprised Katie the most about Jackie was “how much she actually did for the arts and for our country.”

And of course, fashion. But, Katie says she gets her fashion inspiration from her 4-year-old daughter.

“Suri is very helpful. I go to her and I say, ‘What shoes?’ She picks them out. One time, actually many times, I’ll be getting ready for an event or something and I’ll say, ‘Suri what do you think?’ And she’ll say (Katie points) ‘Definitely those. Those,’” Katie explained. “And she won’t let me leave unless I’m wearing what she wants me to wear. She’s got great taste. And I want to make her happy.”

While Katie and Suri perfect their fashion style, Tom is perfection in Mission Impossible style for the upcoming MI-4.

“He’s always in great shape and he’s doing a lot of cool stunts,” Katie said of her husband, but she’s not sure if she would ever star as a “damsel in distress” in one of his films.

“That never occurred to you right?” Regis asked. “You don’t need him anymore.”

“That’s not true!” Katie said. “No, no, that’s not true. I always get so excited to see what they’re going to do. He’s going to be doing some really big stuff in this one, so it’s like ‘What stunt are you doing?’”

And Katie said she will go on the MI-4 locations to Prague and Dubai. But for right now, Katie is focused her film The Romantics, which hits theaters Friday!

“It’s a great cast,” Katie said. But the plot — maintaining a relationship with your ex — was a concept that confused Kelly.

“Concept,” Katie stated, but she did agree it would be weird to invite your ex to your wedding and said, “Yeah, yeah, perhaps, I think.”

[From OK! Magazine]

You know it’s bad when you sound like a robot in print. I can just imagine Katie with her bright, glazed robot eyes saying stuff like “I always get so excited to see what they’re going to do. He’s going to be doing some really big stuff in this one, so it’s like ‘What stunt are you doing?’” in her peculiar little monotone. Had enough? Of course not. Katie also did a press conference on Tuesday for The Romantics, and she said: “My husband has red roses for me everywhere I go and whenever we travel.” Ugh. I mean… yes, that’s sweet. But in my mind, Tom Cruise probably sends red roses to everyone, including Zac Efron. One more robot gem: “Being a mother is so dreamy.” Thank you, Katie.

Here are some pics of Katie & Tom at The Romantics premiere last night… her outfit is unfortunate. Suri does not approve.

Katie Holmes: “Suri picks out all of her own clothes & has since she was 1½”

wenn5199305

Katie Holmes is the cover girl for the new issue of New York Magazine. It’s the “Fall Fashion” issue, you know, because Katie is so “fashionable”. Because she’s such a trendsetter. Because she’s not a robot. The interview is kind of hilarious too – Katie talks about how Suri is into fashion just the same way Katie was when she was younger – only Katie doesn’t say no to whatever whim Suri has, and instead indulges her. I am in love with this quote from Katie: “She says, ‘I want this sleeve cut,’ and it’s like, ‘Okay, we’ll cut it.’ She picks out all of her own clothes and has since she was 1½. Tom and I went to the Met ball a couple of years ago, and I had this beautiful red gown and these royal-blue shoes that I wasn’t planning on wearing, but Suri made me put them on and so I was like, ‘Okay, I trust you.’” Jesus, Katie. Your toddler daughter is not your girlfriend!

Katie Holmes has not lived the typical Hollywood story. She’s a Catholic schoolgirl from Toledo, Ohio, who went to L.A. for the first time when she was 16; she arrived on a Sunday and was cast in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm the very next day. Dawson’s Creek came a year after that, and then there was Batman Begins, and then there was perhaps the world’s most famous courtship, and then there was the birth of the world’s most famous baby, and then, three years ago, her marriage to Tom Cruise, arguably one of the world’s most famous men.

And so for a number of years now, she’s been right at the center of our culture, the subject of an endless swirl of discussion and fantasy: What’s the deal with her marriage, does she really believe in Scientology, did Tom replace her innards with some kind of computer chip? And then there’s Suri! Piercing blue eyes, princess dresses, and a perfect combination of her parents’ very good looks, Holmes’s daughter is 4-year-old tabloid candy. She still travels with a blanket, but already she can’t move around the city without the company of someone very large and very well trained in the protective arts.

It’s not, by any stretch, an ordinary life, which is perhaps not what anyone expected from the girl whose appeal was originally considered “wholesome,” or something you’d find “next door.” She’s in a whole other rarefied neighborhood these days, so no wonder more people than like to admit it find themselves wondering what it must be like to be Katie Holmes.

Maybe all of this wonderful luck, good fortune, and circus-style mayhem that surrounds her every move is why Holmes’s demeanor is so calm. She speaks softly, choosing her words with care. When she smiles, though, she looks like a teenager: all round eyes and crinkly nose and that charmingly crooked Joey Potter grin.

In 2008, Holmes did Broadway, but this is the year of her return to film, and it’s happening in a very big way: She’s completed four new projects. She has a small role in Jonathan Ames’s The Extra Man, out this month, and a starring role (as well as an executive-producer credit) in The Romantics, a Big Chill–meets–Rachel Getting Married indie that comes out in September. Next is Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, which is a horror movie, and then the cop thriller The Son of No One. And in the meantime, she is shooting a History Channel mini-series about Jackie Kennedy—another quiet brunette whose presence the universe found captivating, though for other reasons—hence our homage on the cover of this issue to Ron Galella’s Windblown Jackie photograph. Holmes is also, like other celebrities, now a designer as well. She’s 50 percent of Holmes & Yang, a small collection of luxuriously made basics that call to mind the wardrobe of Lauren Bacall. Given her bruiseless track record, it should come as no surprise that Barneys has had to reorder her fall collection.

You put your collection together with your stylist, Jeanne Yang. How did you get into designing?
I started making clothes for Suri when she was born, designing dresses, and then having seamstresses sew them, because I don’t sew very well. As a child, I was always drawing clothes, and I’ve always loved fabrics, and when Suri was born, I wanted to have certain things be from me and created just by me for her. And so that kind of got me into it, and then one day, Jeanne and I were getting ready for something and we thought, men have such beautiful tailored shirts, they have such a uniform, and we thought it would be nice to make things that are simple that you can have forever.

Were you always into fashion?
I always loved clothes growing up. My mother had a drapery business. And now, part of being in this business is that you’re around really nice clothes. You do these photo shoots, you get exposed to Hermès and Chloé and Armani, and you start to feel the difference.

Is Suri into clothes, too?
I grew up the youngest of five, so there were a lot of hand-me-downs that I would sort of change up. And Suri and I do that now with her clothes. Or rather, she does it. She says, “I want this sleeve cut,” and it’s like, “Okay, we’ll cut it.” She picks out all of her own clothes and has since she was 1½. Tom and I went to the Met ball a couple of years ago, and I had this beautiful red gown and these royal-blue shoes that I wasn’t planning on wearing, but Suri made me put them on and so I was like, “Okay, I trust you.”

She’s often with you on set, right?
Her first set was Lions for Lambs, when she was 9 months old, and now she’s 4 and she’s so creative and she’s so bright and so special. Whatever she wants to do, I know she’s going to be amazing at it. I’ve already started my applause, and I will be applauding for the rest of my life.

You’re playing Jackie Kennedy now. Do you think about your experience in the public eye while doing the role?
I’m just focused on creating a character as much as possible without knowing what was going on behind closed doors. In my own life, it’s just something that’s there. We luckily have security so I can focus on motherhood and work and other things.

Is it complicated balancing your schedule with Tom’s?
We have quite a schedule, you know? We don’t say, “When I’m working, you don’t work,” or anything like that. Last year he was shooting Knight and Day and I was shooting The Romantics, and we’d just fly to see each other after we wrapped. And we homeschool Suri—she has a teacher who is with her every day. We like the one-on-one education. I’m happy that my daughter is strong-willed and determined. You really have to go with what the child is wanting.

Would you and Tom ever work together?
Well, we do collaborate on everything at home. But I mean, he’s Tom Cruise! His body of work is incredible. Every movie he’s done has done really well. I look back, and everything’s a classic. I definitely come home and say to him, “So, imagine a scene … how would you play it?” And he’s helpful and sweet and gracious. He’s quite an incredible human being.

Do you read the various speculations about your marriage?
It’s there, it’s one of those things. My big concern is what does he have going, what do I have going, what are we going to do this weekend. It must seem weird, I guess, having so many people watching. It is weird. I get it. But you just, you know, smile and nod.

[From New York Magazine]

Oh, Jesus. That “But you just, you know, smile and nod” quote is priceless too. As is “I’m happy that my daughter is strong-willed and determined. You really have to go with what the child is wanting.” Granted, I am not the mother to a strong-willed little girl, so I don’t really know, and I‘m just being know-nothing bitch, etc. But I have very strong feelings about the long-term effects Katie’s constant indulgence of Suri is going to play out when Suri is older. It’s going to be ROUGH.

Here’s some of Suri’s brilliance on Katie throughout the years. Thank God Katie “trusts” Suri’s choices.

Katie walked out of Steven Alan store with a mass amount of bags carried by one of her bodyguards as she carried Suri out while covering her face with her long hair. Katie seems to have a blemish she is a little embarrassed about. Fame Pictures, Inc

Katie Holmes seems interesting, non-zombie-like in ‘The Romantics’

Back in March, the first short trailer was released for Katie Holmes’ new movie, The Romantics. I’m calling Katie’s film, but really it’s a Big Chill-esque ensemble which includes Katie, Josh Duhamel, Anna Paquin, Elijah Wood, Malin Akerman and Adrien Adam Brody. Anyway, I complimented Katie by calling her “not totally robotic” in the trailer. Now a new, full-length trailer has been released, and she’s even LESS robotic! Hallelujah!

Once again, I might need to be shot in the face, because I actually think this looks like something I would love to rent. I wouldn’t see it in the theatre, but I would rent it and watch it by myself and feel guilty when I cried at the emotional scene. And yes, this film also looks like it’s borrowing heavily from A)The Big Chill, B)Rachel Getting Married, C) Margot At the Wedding and D)Budget versions of half of Rick Moody’s oeuvre. But there are totally worse things, right? I’m kind of proud of our little Kate-Bot. She’s growing up and stretching her non-Xenu wings!

Katie Holmes finally makes a great career move

katie1

Last summer, Katie Holmes ran far away from Xenu and went to Australia to film a creepy horror film called Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. It was intended to be the definitive take on “Life With Xenu: The Darkness Descends”. No, I jest. It’s a remake of a somewhat forgotten 1970s horror film that is getting a totally new, creepy, terrifying reboot by writer/director Guillermo del Toro. Originally, del Toro was supposed to direct the film, but he ended up just writing the screenplay and producing, while director Troy Nixey helmed the project. Even this attachment of del Toro’s name to the project is enough to send the fanboys into geek heaven, though. Fanboys love del Toro’s work, and from the few films I’ve seen of his oeuvre, he is one of the most imaginative writer/director/producerss working today. My favorite of his was Pan’s Labyrinth, a beautiful, creepy, sad, lush film that was part fairy tale and part nightmare. Anyway, here’s the trailer:

Apparently, del Toro and Nixey were aiming for a PG-13 rating, but when they submitted the film to the MPAA, it got an R rating. Del Toro told the crowd at Comic-Con: “We originally thought we could shoot it as PG-13 without compromising the scares. And then the MPAA came back and gave us a badge of honor. They gave us an R for ‘pervasive scariness.’ We asked them if there’s anything we could do, and they said, ‘Why ruin a perfectly scary movie?’” The basic plot: Guy Pierce (yay!) is the father to a young girl. Dad, the girl, and dad’s girlfriend Katie Holmes move into a creepy old mansion. The girl finds a secret basement, which is full of horrors and creepy things. LIKE XENU.

Seriously, though. I think this was a great career move for Katie. One her better choices. She does “haunted” very well. Coughcoughallthetimecough.
