Kim Cattrall drunkenly berates a NY Post reporter

wenn3204340

I’ve been somewhat surprised that Kim Cattrall has had career longevity beyond Sex and the City. I know people have opinions about the character of Samantha, but I thought Cattrall was the deftest and most talented comedienne on the show, and I enjoy seeing her work beyond the Sam character. She popped up in a small role in the completely underrated Polanski film, The Ghost Writer (I know, it’s Polanski, but it’s also one of Pierce Brosnan’s best performances ever, plus EWAN!). And my mother keeps telling me I should watch My Boy Jack, where she plays the wife of Rudyard Kipling. Anyway, my point is that I like her, and that she’s still working.

Her latest project is Meet Monica Velour. Kim plays an aging porn star/single mother, and I keep seeing interviews with Kim where she’s talking about how she gained weight for the role. Unfortunately, Kim doesn’t stick to her talking points in every interview. Page Six reports this morning that when they sat down to interview Kim for the film, she was a mess. Like, she was yelling at the reporter. And she might have been drunk too. Yikes.

Cranky Kim Cattrall grumped about Hollywood’s bias against older women after the premiere of “Meet Monica Velour” — and told us to get a “respectable” job.

The “Sex and the City” star, who has criticized Hollywood’s obsession with the young and the beautiful, denying talented older actresses plum roles, told us, “Ask me about being a woman. Do you know what it’s like to be 54 and marginalized? It doesn’t get easier as you get older.”

But Cattrall — who put on 20 pounds for her “Monica Velour” movie role as an aging former porn star living in a rural Indiana trailer park and stripping to make ends meet — had even tougher words to say about working for a gossip column.

When we tried to break the ice with Cattrall, mentioning a ridiculous tip we’d gotten earlier in the day about her getting a bikini wax — a well-tackled subject on “SATC” — she snapped, “That’s a stupid question. You’re a smart girl. How could you want to write that?”

She then turned her anger on gossip columns, specifically Page Six, despite our being big fans of hers. “It’ll chew you up and spit you out,” she said, leaning in and adding that being a gossip reporter just isn’t a “respectable job.”

Cattrall asked, “Why don’t you work at — what’s that news agency — Roybers?” When we corrected her, “Reuters,” she conceded, “Yeah, sorry, I’ve been drinking.”

But she didn’t stop there, ranting, “What about writing for a blog? Then you can write about what you want [or] care about.”

Cattrall, holding court at the after-party at the Pamella Roland-sponsored bash at downtown Hotel Chantelle’s rooftop, seemed peeved that because of our deadlines, we hadn’t arrived in time to see her movie — in which her gritty role is a dramatic change from her glamorous and famously oversexed “Sex and the City” character, Samantha Jones.

“You didn’t see my film,” she spat. “Why are you even here?”

[From Page Six]

Maybe Kim was just having a bad night. Maybe she was drunk. Maybe the Page Six girl was really rude. I don’t know. How bad is this? If it was a younger, greener celebrity, it would probably be worse, wouldn’t it? Considering Kim is usually a professional, I think maybe people will give her a pass, if they pay attention at all. I don’t know, it’s not like Kim just told the woman to “F- off” – Kim made the effort to give an argument for why she was berating the woman.

By the way, did anyone watch Kim’s episode of Who Do You Think You Are? That junk was crazy! Like, she’s one generation away from a bigamist!

The Sex and The City gang bring their dog and pony show to Japan

Cast members Parker and Cattrall attend the Japan premiere of Sex and the City 2 in Tokyo
The Sex and The City ladies are continuing their tour promoting soulless conspicuous consumption and offensive throwaway plot lines. They were seen in Japan toasting their fat paychecks and fabulous outfits. Despite the terrible reviews and mediocre box office performance the show must go on.

Earlier today we reported that Sex and The City 2 was second at the box office this holiday weekend. When Monday was included, the film was actually third, with Shrek 4 in the lead and Prince of Persia second. Kaiser pointed me to this amusing recap of the Memorial Day box office results on Gawker, which makes the scary conclusion that we may be in for yet another Sex and The City if the numbers are right. I’ll quote from Box Office Mojo on how the movie performed as expected for a sequel, especially one as shabbily made as this:

Cast member Cattrall attends the Japan premiere of Sex and the City 2 in Tokyo

Sex and the City 2 notched an estimated $37.1 million four-day weekend on approximately 6,100 screens at 3,445 locations, bringing its total to $51.4 million since its Thursday debut. That’s a huge step backwards from the first Sex and the City, which bagged $57 million on its first three-day weekend and had $68.1 million by day five. Distributor Warner Bros.’ exit polling indicated that a whopping 90 percent of Sex 2′s audience was female, and 54 percent was under 35 years old. By comparison, the first Sex’s opening weekend audience was 83 percent female.

Prince of Persia and Sex and the City 2 ranked a lowly 15th and 17th, respectively, among Memorial Day opening weekends and, in terms of estimated attendance, they wouldn’t even crack the Top 25. Based on their content and marketing, though, it would have been unreasonable to expect otherwise.

People seem to lose their heads in regards to sequels, but, aside from aberrations like The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Sex and the City 2 was closer to the way sequels are supposed to behave, though the movie’s marketers exacerbated the situation with a severe case of “sequelitis.” They assumed that the brand name was all they needed for another summer hit, delivering an utterly inessential and random sequel after the first movie tidily wrapped up the storylines. It’s a wonder that they didn’t subtitle the movie “The Legend of Carrie’s Shoes.”

[From Box Office Mojo]

I’ve passed a lot of time laughing at the terrible reviews of Sex and The City 2, with my favorite coming from Dustin Rowles at Pajiba. He likens SATC to Transformers 2 for women, but with designer duds instead of Megan Fox’s bouncing butt. There were so many excellent lines in his review it’s hard to know which ones to quote. My favorite was this one, “There’s a definite narrative pattern in SATC 2: Each of the four women does something banal individually, followed by a scene in which they get together and process that banality, usually while drinking and wearing something colorful or with feathers.” Kaiser’s favorite part was this:

If you were so inclined, there’s a lot you could take offense to here: Their disrespect of the culture, the extravagance they are afforded (they each get their own luxury car and their own butler), and the way they choose to comport themselves — not just in Abu Dhabi, but in the entire movie — while the country is mired in a recession. Is it tactless to release a movie that glorifies consumption during hard economic times? It seems like a petty complaint to lob against a Hollywood movie, which are often about wish fulfillment. But it’s an easy critique to offer up. Most offensive of all to me, however, were the groan-worthy puns and the hideous word play littered throughout the film (“Abu Dhabi Doo!” “Bedouin, Bath and Beyond,” “Lawrence of my Labia”).

[From Dustin Rowles at Pajiba]

So have you seen Sex and The City 2 and was it a semi-pleasurable way to waste two and a half hours? Could you turn off your brain and just drool at the shoes and clothes? Like men looking for T&A, there are much better ways to get some (online) than paying someone $10 to deliver it to you with a thin plot. I like my shoe and fashion porn silent.

Note: The term “Dog and Pony Show” is not meant as a negative reference to any of the actresses’ features. It’s meant as a traveling circus, and according to WikipediaThe term has come to mean an elaborately staged performance, presentation, or event designed to sway or convince people. It is often used in reference to a series of informational events put on by a company or group.”

The Sex and The City 2 trailer isn’t intriguing or entertaining

A lot of new trailers are coming out this Christmas movie season. After watching the trailer for the Sex and The City sequel, above, I have to say it looks like more of the same one dimensional fluff that ruined the first movie. The last movie was decent, but it just felt like a thin rehash of the show with more focus on the lifestyle and material goods. In the trailer we have Carrie poised to play some kind of pseudo celebrity with the other ladies as her entourage. There’s also a head-scratching trip to the desert. I hope they’re headed to a mall in Dubai, because these women would look less out of place on a camping trip. (The scenes were filmed in Morocco, but there’s no telling where they’re supposed to be.)

They should have put this series to bed after the last movie. It made money at the box office though so they’re going to squeeze every dollar out of it. I’m glad they’re making films aimed at older women, but do they have to be as watered down and mediocre as this? Some of us liked the strong friendships in the show more than all the label worship.

Spoiler for last movie and mild spoilers for next one
In the last film, I was really disappointed that Carrie got back together with Big after he abandoned her at the altar. She went back to their old apartment for some shoes and picked Big up again like a shopping addiction she couldn’t quit. The show had a real chance to show Carrie’s friends rallying around her and helping her get through the breakup. Instead, Carrie fought with Miranda over a dumb issue in which she blamed Miranda for Big’s inability to commit. The film was a big let down, but they’re going to throw some more “labels and love” at us, in that order. Or is it just “love for labels”? Who am I kidding. I’m going to go see it for sure.

Sex and The City 2 is out on May 28, 2010 and will feature cameos from Penelope Cruz, Miley Cyrus, Tim Gunn and Liza Minnelli. John Corbett will probably reprise his role as Aiden as he was spotted in Morocco around the time they were filming. Sarah Jessica Parker would neither confirm or deny his involvement, but she did say that Jennifer Hudson won’t be back as her assistant. Parker called the sequel a “caper” and an “antidote” to the “sadness” in the last movie. Some of us want an antidote to the cloying superficiality of the show, but you know that’s never going to happen. We’re just supposed to embrace it I guess.

Thanks to E! Online for the heads up. Here are some stills from the Sex & The City 2 set, taken in NY in September. Credit: L.Gallo/WENN.com

Sarah Jessica Parker & Kim Cattrall: the aging diva battle continues

fp_3572521_cattrall_parker_nyc_090809

Ever since Sex and the City became a cultural phenomenon (back around season 2, or roughly nine years ago), it’s been an open secret that Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker don’t really care for each other. Despite some people wanting it to be some kind of petty catfight, I tend to think they simply aren’t all that friendly, but are able to maintain a professional, working relationship. The relationship has had its challenges of course – when SJP became a producer on the show, some said Kim resented the control SJP had. Some also claimed that Kim held out for the biggest paychecks for the SATC films. None of that may be true, or parts of it, or all of it. Still, the rumors persist, and Kim and SJP have had to address them.

Recently, in her Elle Magazine cover story, SJP defended her relationship with Kim once again, saying, “I don’t think anybody wants to believe that I love Kim. I adore her. I wouldn’t have done the movie without her. Didn’t and wouldn’t.” But sources are now telling In Touch Weekly that there’s still some snottiness going around – this time about how the two actresses are aging:

Although reports of feuding between Kim Cattrall, 53, and Sarah Jessica Parker, 44, were often denied, there was no mistaking in the first SATC movie that Kim’s character, Samantha, was imposed with a real attack on aging: Samantha celebrated her 50th birthday – she grew fat and even split with her hunky younger love interest.

The movie’s sequel looks no different: In one scene, an embarrassed Samantha shows up wearing the same outfit as teen queen Miley Cyrus.

Setsiders say the candid photos from the set prove there is a real age war erupting: SJP looks much older than her younger character, Carrie, and older than Samantha, so this attempt of not letting Samantha shine is proving the rumors have life.

Ironically, Kim has no desire to look like the younger Sarah Jessica. Samantha’s been known for her body, not her face, and she’s not afraid to show it!

[From In Touch Weekly, print edition, November 23, 2009]

Part of the reason I’ve always loved Kim (but not always her character Samantha) is because Kim seems like the most gifted physical comedienne of the group. The scripts for the television show and the films always have Kim doing a lot of physical comedy work (much more than the other actresses), and she always nails it brilliantly. If the physical comedy weren’t also so sexual, I think Kim would get a lot more credit as comedic actress. My point: I don’t think Kim minds the physical comedy aspect of the Samantha role, nor would she mind playing off the running gags that Samantha is, in fact, much older than the other girls. It’s how the character has always been written, and it’s one of Kim’s many strengthes as an actress. As for the whole “SJP looks older” thing – well… I hate to say it, but Kim just seems to be aging with more grace than SJP. Maybe it’s good genes, maybe she takes care of herself, whatever.

Miley Cyrus might star in ‘Sex & the City’-esque project for teens

Oops! Kim Cattrall and Miley Cyrus shoot a scene for Sex and the City 2 where they turn up for a movie premiere in the same outfit!

Rumors involving Miley Cyrus and Sex and the City have been around for a while. Even before Miley was offered a cameo/guest role in the second SATC film, a 15-year-old Miley had already announced to Vanity Fair that SATC was her “favorite show”. Miley said at the time: “It’s my favorite show! I love it! Obviously not the scenarios. But if you watch Sex and the City, like the way the friends are, the way that it’s dry and they all have distinct characters—that’s a thing we try to do on our show.” After a minor scandal erupted (about that and Miley’s sketchy photographs, taken by Annie Leibovitz), Miley had to backtrack a bit and say that she liked the TBS version of SATC, the clean, no-cursing, no-sex version.

It seems like Miley is still a fan. Over the weekend, she filmed her cameo in the new SATC. Thus, we have these horrible pictures of Kim Cattrall and Miley posing like the Ghosts of Trashy Dresses Past and Future. Kim is too old for that dress and Miley is too young for that dress. They both look like drag queens, yes? Anyhoodle, the Enquirer is reporting an interesting little fact. Apparently, SATC’s creator Candace Bushnell is developing a series of books based on “SATC: The High School Years”. Disney has snapped up the rights to the series – and we all know who Disney’s Golden Girl is, don’t we? Ah, yes. It actually makes a lot of sense:

A year and a half ago The ENQUIRER first reported Miley Cyrus was a Sex and the City addict and she’s been rewarded with a cameo in the new film.

BUT that’s NOT the FULL STORY behind the Twitter quitter’s Sex desire —

On April 17, 2008 NationalEnquirer.com FIRST reported that Miley was a big fan of the Candace Bushnell series despite the fact she was only 5 when the series preemed.

Miley, then in the wake, of her carefully orchestrated PR-blast over her Lolita-ish nearly-nude Annie Liebowitz Vanity Fair pix said she wanted to do a “younger cleaner version of Sex and the City” based on the censored version she had seen in syndication.

A few months later we reported that SATC creator Bushnell had lunched a Young Adult book series of Carrie Bradshaw’s high-school years called The Carrie Diaries which will be pubb’ed by Harper Collins, an imprint of Disney.

That’s right – Disney.

And just who’s the biggest money maker in the Maus Haus?

If you said “Miley Cyrus” – pour yourself a Virgin Cosmo.

That’s no coincidence that Miley and Kim Cattrall are facing off in the new SATC – it’s the birth of a tie-in prequel series starring the fresh faced Cyrus, industry insiders predict.

Remember, you read it here FIRST — in The ENQUIRER — As always.

[From the National Enquirer]

Don’t kill me, but I really don’t think this is the worst idea. I mean, let’s face it… what is Miley going to do after the Hannah Montana stuff dies out (fingers crossed that stuff dies soon)? Miley will do one or several of the following: focus mainly on music and becoming the next Britney Spears; try to do more non-Hannah Montana/Disney-type films, a.k.a. “be a real actress”; and/or jump onto another television show. If Disney wants to keep one of their biggest money-makers, they could have bought the rights to SATC: The High School Years specifically for their Golden Goose. And don’t kill me again, but I think Miley is better served on a television show rather than trying for a film career. She’s not going to be the next Meryl Streep, after all.

Sex and the City fashion: totally ’80s

fp_3580177_sex_and_the_city_scp_090909

In case you hadn’t heard, the Sex and the City movie is filming all over the place. Can’t you just hear Sarah Jessica Parker’s girlish scream and she runs in her four-inch Monolos? Oh, yes. And for this film, no one seems to be concerned about spoilers are revealing whatever meager plotlines or anything like that. Every time I see a picture from the set (“the set” = Manhattan), I just think “Thank God I’m not going to have to pay to see this movie.”

Most of these pictures have been all over the place, and many of you have probably seen them, but here they are all in one place! It seems we’re going to be treated to some kind of Sex and the City: Totally ‘80s flashback sequence. I’ve said it before, but my favorite has always been Miranda. I’m getting a kick out of her ‘80s blowout, shoulder pads and Working Girl gear. And is that a bowl cut I spy? She looks amazing, but oh, no. Honey, just no. Also – is it weird that 1980s Charlotte (Kristen Davis) does not look any different? Her kind of prim-and-proper yuppie style really doesn’t look weird – she ends up looking classic.

I could do without Sarah Jessica Parker’s Madonna-esque girdle-as-outerwear look, but I’m kind of digging the flash of flannel. It’s like Carrie Bradshaw knew grunge was coming, and she wanted to give Seattle (the other “sexy city”) a shout-out. Carrie is such a trendsetter.

Of course, the best ‘80s transformation goes to Kim Cattrall. I’m not even sure what this look is. Debbie Harry meets Joey Ramone meets Vivenne Westwood? Is it supposed to be punk? Is it supposed to be glam? Is it supposed to be this hideous? Believe it or not, I remember parts of the 1980s – my age was in the single digits, but I don’t remember women’s fashion being this horrible. Where’s the old-school Gianni Versace? Where are the parachute pants? Can a girl get some jelly bracelets?

Here are the girls filming in Manhattan yesterday. Images thanks to WENN.com and Fame Pictures .

Sex and the City sequel a go

2008_sex_and_the_city_027
It has just been announced that there will in fact be a new Sex and the City movie. There have been rumors flying about a sequel for a while now, but none of the actresses had officially confirmed or denied it. Now the writer, Michael Patrick King, has confirmed that he and all of the ladies have signed on for another movie.

SATC writer-director Michael Patrick King confirms the scoop! In an exclusive statement, King says, “I’m very excited to work with these amazing actresses again and would love to give everyone more information about the sequel…but I’m busy with my ‘Sex’ life.”

“Everything was finalized yesterday afternoon,” a source reports.

Until now, everyone had agreed to do a sequel, but there were no contracts signed with New Line, the studio behind the megahit.

As it is, King has yet to write a script, but shooting will reportedly begin this summer with a release date sometime in summer 2010.

Reps for the stars and the studio did not immediately comment.

In its first weekend alone, Sex and the City opened with almost $58 million in ticket sales, reportedly making it the biggest R-rated comedy opener ever. Budget to make the movie? A cool $65 million.

Quick recap in case you were one of the few who missed it: When we last left Carrie, she had married Mr. Big even after he left her at the altar. Samantha and her young beau (Jason Lewis) split, while Miranda and Steve (David Eigenberg) patched things up after he cheated on her. Charlotte and Harry (Evan Handler) not only adopted a baby girl, but Charlotte gave birth to a second daughter.

[from E Online]

For a month after the first Sex and the City movie came out, there were lines out the door at the movie theaters near my house, full of teenagers and twenty-somethings in cocktail dresses. Some of them were drunk from too many Cosmos. With the last movie having done so well, you can only assume that the studio was ready to do another as soon as the credits rolled – they just needed to wait a little until the hype from the first one died down. Now they can start building up the tension again with “unofficial” photos from on-set and “leaked” scripts. I’ll guarantee that in spite of, or perhaps because of, the recession, audiences are more than willing to spend $10 to watch wealthy New Yorkers running around in their new Jimmy Choos.

Kim Cattrall goes topless to save art (NSFW)

Linked version is unblurred and NSFW
Kim Cattrall, 52, has gone topless for Sex and The City she’s gone panty-less to promote a book, and now she baring her natural boobs for a good cause.

The owner of two 16th century paintings by the Italian Renaissance master Titian has said that he’ll have to remove the paintings from public display at the National Galleries of Scotland and London unless he’s paid £ 50 million, or $76 million USD. The Duke of Sutherland needs the money in this difficult economic times and will be forced to sell the paintings if the museums can’t pony up.

In order to help raise money to save the masterpieces, Cattrall has posed along with cast members of the cabaret show La Clique in a recreation of the painting, shot by renowned photographer Tom Hunter. The project was done in collaboration with BBC Two program “The Culture Show.”

Tom Hunter is well known for his recreation of old masters and is the only photographer to have had an exhibition at the National Gallery, London.

The Culture Show challenged Hunter to create a 21st century version of the painting after he came out in support of the campaign to raise £50million to keep it on public display in Britain.

For the recreation, Cattrall posed alongside the cast of cult cabaret production La Clique.

And Miss Cattrall features as Diana in the picture alongside art students from the Courtauld Institute and performers from the hit West End burlesque show La Clique.

Tom said: ‘Kim is the perfect Diana. Just like the Greek goddess, she combines beauty with a sense of threat.

‘She was a great sport and at 52 made an amazing Diana. She more than held her own among a room full of twenty-somethings.

‘The picture can’t of course hold a candle to the original which deserves to remain on public view. This painting is sublime and to lose it to a private collection would be a tragedy.’

Cattrall, whose parents are British, is a regular visitor to the National Gallery and a huge admirer of Titian’s work.

She said: ‘Viewing this painting is like being in the presence of genius, it would be a tragedy if it were not on public view’.

The Duke of Sutherland, who owns the painting, has given the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery, London until December 31 to raise £50million to buy it from him. After that point, he may sell it on the open market.

[From The Daily Mail]

I’m not ashamed to admit I’m a fan of Kim Cattrall. She seems full of herself but she’s not apologetic about it and has a kind of healthy haughtiness. Plus anyone who talks crap as much as she does without crossing the line into shrew territory is interesting to me. I like Rosie too because she just tells it like is.

Last week a story came out that Cattrall’s co-star Sarah Jessica Parker was super pissed that Cattrall had confirmed a SATC movie sequel before all the details had been ironed out. Cattrall probably doesn’t care. They can’t make the movie without her and she knows it.

Kim Cattrall confirms Sex and the City sequel

Kim Cattrall confirmed to Scary Spice that there will definitely be a Sex and the City sequel. While appearing on the British talkshow, The Paul O’Grady Show, Cattrall answered guest host Mel B.’s question of sequel with a resounding yes.

I have mixed emotions about Sex and the City that pretty much lean to the negative. However, that was also my feeling when the concept of the first movie was brought up after the successful HBO series. The movie was a box office hit and a sequel probably would be, too, because of the large SATC demographic. There are plenty of questions about what the movie could possibly address. The basis for the first film was Carrie looking for love and in the movie she found it.

Kim Cattrall seemed to hint that she’s finished with her current boyfriend in her comments on how she isn’t like her SATC character, Samantha.

But the blonde — who has dated chef Alan Wyse for about five years — admitted she was not like her racy character.

Kim, 52, said: “I’m sort of a serial monogamist. I find a guy I like and I tend to spend an awfully long time with him — five or six years. That’s a very long time.

“And in Hollywood that’s forever.”

[From The Sun]

If I were Alan Wyse, I’d be reading between the lines and looking for a new place to sleep. It looks like Wyse’s time is just about up judging by that statement. It’s pretty sad that Kim’s “awfully long time” in a relationship is five or six years. Wyse has been around for five, so his expiration date is imminent.

Kim Cattrall vows never to have plastic surgery

Kim Cattrall has made one hell of a bold public statement, especially for a woman intent on dating younger men. She’s vowed that she won’t ever get plastic surgery, and won’t try to look like she’s twenty. I say right on… but ask me again in fifteen years and I might have a different response.

Kim Cattrall has vowed never to have plastic surgery – because she thinks she’d become unrecognisable.

At 51, the Sex And The City star insists she’s not bothered at losing her looks.

‘I had a great time in my youth and I still feel youthful. But I’ve no desire to look as though I’m in my 20s,’ Kim, who played Samantha in the hit US show, tells the Daily Express.

‘I don’t think I’d try plastic surgery. I’d be too frightened I’d end up not looking like myself. I don’t want to look in the mirror and see The Joker from Batman staring back at me!’

[From NOW Magazine]

Kim is 51, and whenever I see pictures of her I always think how old she looks for her age. It just hit me that that’s not the case at all – she looks great for 51. But we’re so used to seeing actresses donning faces pulled within an inch of their lives, and we get used to that look. It becomes the norm, and an expectation. Kim looks fabulous, and she still looks like herself.

Some friends of mine have a seven-year-old daughter who told me she thought all the women in the movies and on TV were related. We had a long discussion, and apparently she came to that conclusion because so many of them looked the same to her. I thought it was really cute at the time, and just assumed she couldn’t distinguish faces of people she didn’t know well. Totally age appropriate. But when I re-think it, she’s right. So many women get work done, and instead of trying to look like a better version of themselves, they try to all look like each other. And they all come out looking sort of related.

I say to each her own, but bravo to Kim for looking like herself.

Kim Cattrall is shown sitting next to designer Vivienne Westwood at her fashion show at Berlin fashion week on 7/20/08. She’s also shown on 7/19, 7/16, and 7/17 with Eva Padberg. Credit: WENN
