Britney to sue 8 tabloids from offshore for maximum results

Britney is planning to sue 8 different tabloids for reporting that her marriage is in trouble, but she’s not going to do it from the states, where celebrities are considered public personalities and are fair game by law - she’s filed suit in Ireland, where her chances of winning are much higher:

BELFAST is looking to challenge London as the libel capital of the world as some of America’s biggest stars, including the singers Britney Spears and Whitney Houston, prepare to sue through its courts.

Spears is to sue the National Enquirer, based in Florida, for reports that her marriage to Kevin Federline was at an end. She is also suing seven other US and British publications that repeated the claims.

Foreign claimants have long been attracted to London because of the strict libel laws, but Belfast offers the prospect of high payouts, faster justice and lower costs.

Paul Tweed, senior partner at Johnson’s solicitors, who has been instructed by Spears, said he was also being consulted by Houston, Paula Abdul, the singer, and Steve Bing, film producer and father of Liz Hurley’s son Damian…

One law firm, which represents American celebrities suing in London, said: “They come to the UK because it is a good place to sue. In the US there is a public figure defence which means that if you have celebrity status you can’t sue anybody in America unless you can show that they acted from malice.”

Paul Tweed, senior partner at Johnson’s solicitors, who has been instructed by Spears, said he was also being consulted by Houston, Paula Abdul, the singer, and Steve Bing, film producer and father of Liz Hurley’s son Damian.

Belfast has similar libel laws to England, but waiting lists are shorter and the costs can be 75% lower. Many cases go to juries, which make higher awards. In one Belfast case Barney Eastwood, the boxing promoter, received an award of £450,000, the highest in Irish legal history.

If an American publication does not have assets in Britain, Tweed sues distributors and website hosts. He is currently taking action against Yahoo!

It doesn’t seem fair that celebrities can just file suit from England or Ireland in order to get around US libel laws, but major corporations avoid paying taxes by incorporating overseas. Exploiting tax and legal loopholes is just one of the ways that people hold onto their undeserved millions.

Here is Britney with Sean Preston and her mom and sister outside of Nobu. K-Fed was there, too, but is not pictured. There was supposedly a paparrazi fight as photographers jockied for pictures of the pregnant star. TMZ has a video of it, with people saying “back off” and swearing, but it doesn’t seem as exciting as they make it out to be. We were hoping for some punches and hair-pulling.

Paris back with Stavros; gets sued for multi-car accident

Paris’ car trouble just doesn’t end. She was videotaped backing her SUV into a honda in a parking lot this weekend, and now she’s getting sued for a multi-car pileup in LA. Paris wasn’t driving and wasn’t in the car - her cousin caused the accident with Paris’ car. (If Paris was around, you would have heard of this already.) The suit claims she’s legally responsible, though:

The incident allegedly occurred in May, 2004. Brooke Ashley Brinson, who identified herself at the scene as Paris Hilton’s cousin, was driving the Mercedes that was registered to Hilton. The heiress was not in the car.

According to the suit, “Traffic began to slow down and all vehicles came to a stop for traffic ahead.” The lawsuit alleges that the defendant’s car failed to stop, causing a chain collision involving four cars. The plaintiffs, Ivan Alvarez, Monica Delgado and their child, Nicholas Alvarez, were two cars in front of the Mercedes.

TMZ spoke with the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Mauro Fiore, Jr., who said his two adult clients suffered “serious injuries.”

Fiore says he filed a claim with Hilton’s insurance company, and was shocked to learn that Hilton had the bare minimum coverage for property damage — $5,000. Hilton’s insurance company refused to disclose her policy limits for personal injury.

Fiore says he wants $250,000 for each plaintiff but the insurance company refuses to pay a dime.

There are two other lawsuits pending against Paris. One is a $10 million defamation case filed by Zeta Graff. Paris falsely claimed that Graff attacked her at a London club in July of last year and arranged to have the story leaked to the tabloids.

Another lawsuit is by party planner Brian Quintana, who Paris called a “dirty Mexican” and reportedly harassed after Quintana is said to have told Paris’ boyfriend, Stavros Niarchos III, to dump her to get back with Mary-Kate Olsen. Quintana said he would drop the suit if Paris would show up at the opening of one of his clubs. We’re not sure if Paris followed through, but it means that she could avoid at least one of the three lawsuits against her, not that the careless party girl cares much.

And Paris may be back with Stavros for the third time, because the two were spotted buying DVDs together. They seem to have picked up Kathy Griffin’s comedy DVD.

Since splittling with Stavros in early May she was linked shortly with NFL quarterback Matt Leinart and with the hot guy who played her love interested in her new music video.

Stavros is said to have begged Paris to take him back, and to have sampled Lindsay Lohan’s spicy wares.

Here is Paris making sure the paparrazi get a shot of her new CD as she heads to a pilates class in Brentwood. [via] Paris and Stavros picture [via]

Jennifer Lopez gets sued for cancelling her weird tour

Jennifer Lopez is being sued by concert promoters for pulling out of her tour of select European and Middle-Eastern cities. They cite the massive costs of promoting her cancelled appearances, along with the cost and effort of catering to her every anticipated whim:

Bulgarian promoters Pick and More have teamed up with their colleagues from the rest of the cities where Latin diva Jennifer Lopez cancelled her tour to sue her.

Apart from the star’s fee, the organizers of her Bulgarian gig admitted that they had spent about EUR 203,000 on commercials and to satisfy Lopez’ many whims. The promoters said they has spent a little over EUR 3,000 on sunflower seeds, chili, aroma candles and mineral water, and then had to double the sum to transport all the supplies from the states.

Now J Lo is facing a trial and all the angry promoters are determined to get their money back. The most disappointing fact, Pick and More admitted, was that the diva didn’t give any reason for the cancellation. The short note announcing that the rest of the tour was not to be did not bear any explanation, and many find this unethical…

The Latin star was supposed to hold her concert in Sofia on May 2, as part of the tour promoting her latest album “Rebirth”, but she delayed the gig for May 23. Afterwards she cancelled the tour, leaving thousands of disillusioned fans in Mocow, Dubai, Mumbai, Athens, Baku and Thessaloniki.

People are speculating that J.Lo is pregnant since she looked slightly thick around the middle at the Time magazine awards and was sporting grey hair. It doesn’t seem likely to us since she’s been trying to get pregnant forever. If she is knocked up, she surely had some medical assistance and it seems like someone would have spilled the beans that she was getting fertility treatment.

Also, if she is pregnant it seems early enough in the pregnancy for her to be able to tour without a risk to her health. Her tour in Bulgaria was set to start May 23rd, a little over a week before she cancelled it.

We hope something else is up, because we can’t stand J.Lo and don’t want to have to report about her pregnancy and birth.

Paris Hilton can get her lawsuit thrown out if she just goes to a club

Paris Hilton has two lawsuits pending against her. One is $10 million defamation case filed by Zeta Graff for a story that Paris invented about Graff attacking her in a night club in July, 2005. Paris arranged to have the fabricated incident leaked to Page Six, which is otherwise a bastion of responsible journalism.

There is another defamation lawsuit against Paris by party planner Brian Quintana. He was granted a three year restraining order against her after she made threatening phone calls to him, famously calling him a “lazy Mexican.” Quintana was friends with Paris, until he is said to have told Paris’ boyfriend, Stavros Niarchos III, to dump her to get back with Mary-Kate Olsen.

Paris is not allowed to get within 100 yards of Quintana, unless they’re at the same party.

Now Quintana is willing to drop the lawsuit - if Paris will show up at the launch of the nightclub he’s now running, Teddy’s, which was recently closed for underage drinking and mismanagement.

But he’s offering her a final laurel branch - the chance to put the past behind them and join him to relaunch trendy Hollywood nightclub Teddy’s. Hilton was a regular at the hip Roosevelt Hotel club before it closed its doors last month (MAR06), amid reports of underage drinking. And Quintana, who has been approached to take charge of the club, believes it the re-opening will be a perfect opportunity for the two foes to kiss and make up.

He explains, “I don’t want to drag out a lengthy legal battle. I need people to know they can trust me because I’ll be around for years. “So, for a small fee, I’m asking her to make an appearance with me (at Teddy’s).” He’ll even drop the restraining order, which prevents Hilton from coming within 25 yards (75 metres) of the party planner when they’re at the same event, and 100 yards (300 feet) at all other times.

That’s pretty generous and business-savvy of Quintana. Whether Paris shows up or not, he just got a ton of free publicity for the club.

Here she is getting out of her car. I know - thrilling - but she does seem to get caught behind the pop-up door for a moment.

J.Lo sues her ex

Jennifer Lopez is suing her first ex husband, Ojani Noa, to stop him from coming out with a book about her. Noa signed a confidentiality agreement with Lopez five months ago that stated the he could not malign Lopez or reveal details of their past relationship. Lopez wants to enforce the confidentialy agreement and get a restraining order to block the book’s release.

Noa filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Lopez at the end of 2004, claiming he’d been fired unfairly from his manager position at her Pasadena restaurant, Madres. He dropped the suit last November, and must have signed the confidentiality agreement in return for a settlement.

Noa has also tried to blackmail Lopez over the book. He asked for $5 million in return for not releasing it.

The lawsuit filed on behalf of Lopez maintains that the New York Post ran an article describing Noa’s book three months ago. When Lopez’s attorneys reached out to Noa to inquire about the manuscript, he responded with a letter, saying that he’d continue to shop his book around. The filing also states that Noa later said that “he would not agree to refrain from marketing his book unless [Lopez] paid him the sum of $5 million.”

The NY Post claims that there are some juicy details in the novel, including the revelation that Lopez cheated on P. Diddy in 1999 wtih Marc Anthony.

Jessica Simpson forgets who pays her for what

Jessica Simpson is being sued by a clothing company for $100 million for breach of contract:

According to the complaint, filed in New York State Supreme Court by the Tarrant Apparel Group, Simpson inked a multimillion-dollar three-year licensing deal in December 2004 to launch a line of low-priced jeans and clothing.

Under the terms of the agreement, Simpson was supposed to be “actively involved” in promoting the garb, including wearing items from the line at “public events, shows and appearances” whenever “reasonably practicable…”

The company contends the Dukes of Hazzard star even refused to be photographed wearing items from the JS by Jessica Simpson and Princy collections, and that when asked by the press to name her favorite brand of jeans at an event last year, she replied “True Religion,” rather than “Princy.”

Now Mischa Barton realizes that she has to talk about Keds as part of her endorsement deal, but Jessica Simpson has a clothing line named after her and still can’t remember to plug it.

Simpson might just be fed up with endorsements. She sued an autoracing company two years ago for not paying her a mere $140,000 for wearing a T-Shirt with their logo on it in one of her videos.

Here she is in an older photo shoot for “Lovable Bras.” At least that’s a product she doesn’t have to worry about wearing out.

Jessica Alba forgives Playboy

Jessica Alba has forgiven Hugh Hefner for putting her on the cover of Playboy in a bikini without her permission. Alba was said to be embarassed by the issue, which seemed to suggest that she would be found naked inside. She threatened legal action and asked for the issue to be retracted, but a kind letter from Hefner convinced her to change her mind:

In his letter to Alba, Hefner apologized for “any distress unintentionally caused by the publication of your photo” on the March cover.

“What was intended as a tribute to your tremendous popularity has been misinterpreted by some as something else for which we are truly sorry since we are among your biggest fans,” Hefner said.

“In light of Mr. Hefner’s personal apology for Playboy’s unauthorized use of my photo on their cover, I have decided to discontinue my claims against them,” Alba, 24, said in a written statement.

“This was never about money, it was about setting the record straight about something that was done without my knowledge or consent,” she added.

Alba’s lawyers were said to be in talks with representatives from Playboy, but have ultimately decided to avoid costly and time consuming legal action. It seems like Alba just wanted to make a point, and it has been well taken.

Alba has a different beef with MTV, which staged a kiss with the hot actress with an aggressive chimpanzee for a clip that aired during the MTV Movie Awards. Alba says the chimp stuck its tongue in her mouth and bared its teeth at her:

She explained: “It was awful. All of a sudden there was a monkey in my arms and I had to do a clip for ‘most romantic moment’ award at the MTV movie awards. So the monkey’s in my arms and I’m supposed to give her a peck. She opened her mouth and her tongue is scraping against my teeth. Monkeys’ teeth are really long, kind of like a snake.

“Then I had to do it again and she grabbed both of my ears and screamed in my face and showed me all of her teeth. I thought she was going to bite my face off. I think monkeys should be left in trees.”

Surely any human would have been pleased to take over for the reluctant chimp.

Here is Alba with her boyfriend, Cash Warren, taking out the trash. Hollywood Tuna points out that she’s wearing a T-Shirt with his name on it, and that Cash is more than happy to let her do the heavy lifting.

Four more after the jump.

Bill Cosby goes after blogger for posting videos mocking him

Bill Cosby’s legal team has sent a cease and desist order to popular blogger Andy Baio of Waxy.org for posting the “House of Cosbys” video files. “House of Cosbys” is a cartoon that depicts multiple cloned Cosbys living in a house together, similar to the plot of the Micheal Keaton film, Mulitplicity. Baio is standing his ground, and says that “House of Cosbys” is a parody which falls under fair use guidelines. He points to many other parodies of Cosby, and says that he refuses to be legally bullied:

More than anything, this strikes me as a special kind of discrimination against amateur creators on the Internet. Mad Magazine, Saturday Night Live, South Park, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and countless other mainstream media sources have parodied Bill Cosby over the years…

But because it takes so little effort to threaten a small web-based artist (or the blogger who hosts their work), the Net is constantly targeted regardless of just cause. Justin Roiland, creator of House of Cosbys, was forced to remove the videos because he couldn’t risk the possibility of an actual lawsuit. And when Channel 101 decided to take a stand, Cosby’s lawyers targeted their ISP instead, forcing the videos offline.

But I know my legal standing, and I’m not backing down unless ordered by the court. This is free speech and creative freedom, and even though it’s just one guy’s goofy labor of love, that’s worth fighting for, dammit.

Here’s House of Cosbys episode one:

Bill Cosby seems like even more of an asshole when you consider that he recently pointed out to Katrina victims that there were high crime rates in New Orleans before the natural disaster:

Humorist Bill Cosby lectured black residents of New Orleans over the weekend, saying their community was “wounded” by crime even before Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city and killed their neighbors.

“It’s painful, but we can’t cleanse ourselves unless we look at the wound,” Cosby told the rally of about 2,000 people at the city’s convention center, where thousands of Katrina evacuees had gathered seven months earlier.

Ladies and gentlemen, you had the highest murder rate, unto each other. You were dealing drugs to each other. You were impregnating our 13-, 12-, 11-year-old children,” he said, in quotes picked up by Reuters.

[via]

This is typical of Cosby, who has lashed out in the past at what he perceives as a violent black popular culture and an unwillingness to change. Cosby has seemed to blame the African American community for their plight and maintains a dismal perspective instead of looking at more broad sociocultural factors and seeing the positive aspects of black culture.

Kate Moss to write tell-all autobiography of her cocaine abuse

Virgin mogul Richard Branson has paid Kate Moss a £1million advance to write an autobiography about her ordeal with cocaine abuse. Moss is said to have confided in Branson during her struggle to get off drugs last year:

The supermodel sought sanctuary on the Virgin tycoon’s Caribbean isle. Necker, after her spell in rehab.

She had long chats with Branson, who has known Kate since she was 15 and signed to his Storm agency.

Kate was dropped by a host of labels following damning footage of her cocaine abuse last September. She spent a month in rehab in Arizona.

Branson said: “The story coming out could have saved her from a far worse situation”…

Branson has persuaded her to sign a £1million autobiography contract to confess all about her cocaine abuse
- published by Virgin Books.

Kate’s career had some setbacks, but quickly recovered after the video of her doing cocaine came out last year. Now she’s set to cash in big time with a revealing autobiography.

Kate Moss has also forfeited a lawsuit against Britian’s Channel Five for a 2004 documentary, “The Truth about Kate Moss,” that claimed that she did cocaine. In order to proceed with the lawsuit, Kate would have had to sign a statement that she didn’t do cocaine. Instead of signing the statement, for which there is plenty of proof otherwise, she gave up persuing the lawsuit.

Here is Kate out with a male friend in London on Thursday. We also have pictures of her April appearance in Harper’s Bazaar.

Britney is an evil boss

Britney is getting sued by some of her former bodyguards for not paying overtime for the 24-7 coverage she demands:

Plump ex-pop tart Britney Spears is being burned by three former bodyguards, who yesterday filed suit against her for allegedly stiffing them on overtime pay. The beefy ex-henchman claim they were on call to the skinflint superstar 24 hours day, yet received nothing above their straight salaries, which ran between $2,400 and $3,350 a week.

I don’t know, I mean I usually side with the labor but 2k a week doesn’t sound bad. They probably just couldn’t stand being around her all day.
