Liza Minnelli: “Lady Gaga wanted to meet me. She looked like a nice kid.”

fp_7535612_barm_minelli_09_11

For some unknown yet impossibly momentous reason, Liza Minnelli chose to sit down with the Daily Mail for an interview. In doing so, Liza doesn’t really come right out and talk about herself, but she does deliver a bevy of opinions about others. In short, Liza clearly enjoys a good deal of great gossip just like the rest of us do, and she shovels out mountains of tidbits about a lot of people. Here are the best excerpts from the interview, although I left out a ton of stuff about Michael Jackson, so if you’re interested in that topic, the full piece is worth reading. In the meantime, Liza’s statements generally stand on their own, and she’s got a ton of stuff to say about her ex-husbands, Gaga, Madonna, Liz Taylor, and her own mother.

On Judy Garland: One day, I said to her: “Mama, why are you always so sad when you sing Over The Rainbow?” She looked at me. “It’s what they want,” she said. “Now let’s go get a hamburger.” Forget anything you’ve read. That’s how I remember her. That’s my reality.

On Liz Taylor: Elizabeth was just a regular girl. The glitter and the glamour and the gutter [as she witheringly dismisses it] were all in the photographs and the way stars like her were presented. The reality was that she was part of an era when movie stars were working actors. She went to the studio. She did her job. I remember calling her one day. I was crying about something awful someone had said about me in the press. There was a pause. “You read that stuff?” she said. She told me she never read a single thing about herself so I stopped, too, there and then, which meant there was never anything lousy going round and round in my brain. I thought that was good advice.

On Lady Gaga & Madonna: I love Lady Gaga. Not long ago, I went to see her show, she says. “Someone came up to me at the end and asked if I’d come backstage. Lady Gaga wanted to meet me. There she was, her hair normal, no weird costume. Just a simple dressing gown. She looked like a nice kid. She said: “You’re my favourite. You’re my hero.” There were photographers who wanted a picture of us together so she turned towards them and opened the front of her dressing gown. I immediately closed it. I laughed. She’s into the Madonna thing: shock value. And it works. But the girl has a big talent. Gaga and Madonna have realised the value of shock. But why not? You need to do anything you can in this business to get noticed. And they’ve both done it brilliantly. In a way, I started that with the Sally Bowles look, the cropped black hair, the lashes. It was a look that became important. It went round the world.

On Why She’ll Never Marry Again: Well, look at the history. Come on! But it wasn’t the fault of those poor guys – minus the last fool. When you do what I do, when you live how I live, it’s difficult to be married. [David Gest] always did talk up a great show. And he could be very, very funny. But look, I married him when I was recovering from encephalitis. My head was all over the place.’

On Her Hopeful Sex Life: I’ve decided I want three lovers. The first would be enormously rich, with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana skin. The second would be someone who’s passionate about something – science, painting, anything, I don’t care. Passion is so sexy. And finally, I want someone who comes to see me twice a week. I don’t even have to know his name.

[From Daily Mail]

You know, I always wondered why Liza married the reprehensible Mr. Gest, but I guess encephalitis is as good an excuse as any, right? It certainly puts that era of Liza’s life (which seems so fittingly distant from her Cabaret days) into a bit of perspective. Although I’m not altogether uncertain that Gest wouldn’t mind a bit of green nail polish in his own way. Poor Madonna though — she’ll be positively crushed to learn that Lady Gaga’s obsessions with her only go so far and that Liza is Gaga’s true “hero.” Also, that bit about wanting three lovers doesn’t sound like such a bad idea, so maybe I’ll look into the possibility myself.

Debbie Reynolds: Jennifer Aniston & Angelina Jolie could be friends one day

Angelina Jolie

When discussing the “Bermuda triangle” of Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, many people have cited a Hollywood incident that happened some fifty years ago. They mention the “Bermuda triangle” of Debbie Reynolds, Eddie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor. The story goes that Debbie and Eddie were married, with children, and their closest friends were Elizabeth Taylor and her third husband, super-producer Michael Todd. Todd died tragically in a plane crash that left Elizabeth distraught. Eddie Fisher spent a lot of time comforting the young widow and mother, and soon left Debbie for Liz. Just a few years after that, Liz left Eddie for the also-married Richard Burton.

I suppose the comparisons are there. Debbie Reynolds and Jennifer Aniston both have/had that same kind of “America’s Sweetheart” mantle. Both Liz and Angelina have that “Beautiful Homewrecker” mantle. But comparing Brad Pitt to Eddie Fisher just seems weird. Nonetheless, there were similarities in their situations.

Anyway, Debbie Reynolds has chimed in about the recent “Bermuda triangle”, and she claims that with some time, Angelina and Jennifer could be friends. PR Inside has more:

Love rivals Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie could be pals one day – according to veteran actress Debbie Reynolds.

Aniston and Jolie are still feuding through press interviews, four years after Brad Pitt ended his marriage to the Friends actress and fell for his Mr and Mrs Smith co-star Jolie.
Reynolds insists the love triangle mirrors her own heartache back in 1959, when her first husband Eddie Fisher left her for close pal Elizabeth Taylor.

Fifty years on, Reynolds and Taylor have overcome the rivalry to form a firm friendship – and she insists Aniston and Jolie can too.

The 76-year-old says, “(The split with Fisher) reminds me of what happened with Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Except we were a generation earlier.” And she urges the pair to become friends – insisting there was nothing Aniston could do to keep Pitt from leaving.

Reynolds adds,”We (she and Taylor) are friends again.”

“I mean, what can you do? When the man wants to leave he wants to leave.”

[From PR Inside]

I’ve always thought that a big reason Debbie and Liz buried the hatchet was because Liz dumped Eddie when someone better came along. It just took some time for both ladies to come to the shocking realization that they were fighting over a pipsqeak like Eddie Fisher, and that they were both better off without him. Liz has admitted that she never would have married Eddie had she not been so heartbroken over Michael Todd’s death, and she’s often described both Todd and Richard Burton as “the loves of her life”.

Here’s Elizabeth Taylor, Eddie Fisher, and Debbie Reynolds in 1958.

Elizabeth Taylor is back at work

At the end of July the National Enquirer reported that Liz Taylor was in hospital on life support, surrounded by family and friends who were concerned she wasn’t going to make it through the night. Which is actually quite nice, that they would be there for her. What’s even nicer, particularly for Liz, is that she’s out of the hospital and back at work.

“Ms. Taylor is at home and happy – and busier than ever,” the unidentified friend told People.com.

“She’s living her life. She’s been having dinner with friends. She’s working.”

Sources cited by People.com did not said when exactly the 76-year-old was discharged from the hospital, but Mr Guttman said it was recently.

Another friend told the magazine that Taylor already was fit enough to plan upcoming trips to Europe and Hawaii, and to weigh in on holiday packaging for her perfume line White Diamond.

The last official statement on Taylor’s condition came July 31, when Mr Guttman confirmed that she had been admitted to hospitalbut denied as “dramatic, overstated and untrue” tabloid reports at the time that she was seriously ill.

He said then that her hospital visit was “precautionary.”

The Australian

Liz has suffered a benign brain tumor, scoliosis, 2 hip replacements, multiple bouts of pneumonia, and has broken her back several times. Not to mention her multiple divorces, and drug and alcohol issues. She also has a young companion, industrialist Jason Winters, who is 28 years her junior. Despite her illnesses, Elizabeth Taylor, she seems to have an energy that is just amazing. I think I’m going to go introduce my daughter to National Velvet now.

Liz Taylor was on life support after complications from pneumonia

Liz Taylor has had numerous health problems, the latest of which has been a serious bout with pneumonia. The National Enquirer is reporting that the legendary actress was in the hospital being treated for the condition when she suffered congestive heart failure and was placed on life support to help her breathe. The situation was so serious, her close friends and family were called to be at her side in the event that she didn’t make it through the night.

Elizabeth Taylor was put on a life support machine after suffering congestive heart failure, it was reported this evening.

The 76-year-old’s condition was said to have deteriorated after she was initially diagnosed with pneumonia last week.

Her children were at her bedside and doctors warned she might not survive, said the U.S. publication National Enquirer.

But the following day she improved and the dual Oscar winner was breathing without medical help last night.

A source said: ‘The doctors thought they were going to lose her. She’s still very sick, but she’s past the crisis.’

The actress, a mother of three who adopted a fourth child with Richard Burton, was taken to hospital on July 15 when flu turned into pneumonia.

[From The National Enquirer via The Daily Mail]

Taylor’s list of health problems is quite lengthy- everything from back problems to to diabetes and osteoporosis, which is why you often see her in a wheelchair these days. Hopefully she is not in too much pain. It is incredibly horrifying to watch an older family member slowly deteriorate the way Liz has. Sometimes you can’t help but wish they would pass away, in their sleep, rather than being shuttled back and forth to the hospital every other week, subjected to a new, even worse ailment. However, Liz has been seen out and about this year, and she seems as though her mind and spirit are still vital. Get well, Liz!

Elizabeth Taylor not married, but she’s a howler

elizabethtaylornotmarried.jpg
Recently it seemed that Elizabeth Taylor might have been planning on walking down the aisle with her gentleman companion, 47-year-old businessman Jason Winters. Not bad for a woman of 75-years.

“Jason Winters is one of the most wonderful men I’ve ever known and that’s why I love him,” Taylor said.

“He bought us a beautiful house in Hawaii and we visit it as often as possible.” It will be Taylor’s first trip down the aisle since her failed 1991 marriage to construction worker Larry Fortensky

A friend says: “Liz is madly in love with Jason and he feels the same way. It’s taken us all by surprise, but we’re happy for her.

“She didn’t think she’d fall in love again, but since Jason came into her life that has all changed.”

Courier Mail

But she disputes the marriage claims, in this crazy YouTube video, taken at her annual AIDS Foundation benefit.

Is that actually Liz Taylor or some kind of drag queen impersonator? If it is her I’m glad she is well enough to howl like a wild coyote, and squawk like a – oh, I can’t describe anything that can howl “Maaaaawidge!” in just that way. I guess it’s that kind of talent that wins you Academy Awards.

Elizabeth Taylor seems to have learnt her lesson about marriage. It wasn’t an easy lesson to learn, she’s been down the aisle eight times, twice with the same man – I think it’s fair to say she’s a slow learner. To give credit where it is due, she does seem to have taken it all to heart, having been separated from her last husband since 1996.
