Mackenzie Phillips reveals new face, chiclet teeth, says incest wasn’t consensual

Former child star Mackenzie Phillips made plenty of headlines last year when she came out with the news that she had an over 10 year incestual relationship with her father that she deemed “consensual”. Phillips, now 50, revealed the disturbing story last September that she had a relationship with her now-deceased biological father, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, that started when she was just 19 and continued until she was 29. There was a lot of drugs involved and Mackenzie was an addict up until recently. She was promoting a book when she dropped this news andmany people accused her of using the shocking story to make money. Others praised Mackenzie for coming out with the uncomfortable details of a personal tragedy in a way that might help other victims of incest.

Now Mackenzie is talking again, and I’m kind of relieved that it took her five months to come back on the scene. She may have been waiting for all of her plastic surgery and dental work to get completed, though. The woman has a completely new face that cost $50,000 and her teeth are capped so much that she had trouble closing her mouth. She was on Good Morning America today to clear the air on her classification of the incest as “consensual,” saying that she’s since been schooled by other victims that there is no such thing as consensual incest, no matter your age. She also discussed her sister Chynna Phillips’s recent stint in rehab for anxiety, and said it may be connected to her revelations last year. Chynna was one of the only family members to publicly support Mackenzie after she went public with the story.

Mackenzie Phillips showed off her new look Wednesday on Good Morning America, and the ex-One Day at a Time actress did not hold back as usual, talking about her recent surgical makeover, the backlash she received after her incest revelation last year and her sister Chynna’s recent woes.

RadarOnline.com has the clip of Phillips — sporting $50,000 of Botox, Restylane, laser treatments, dental upgrades and hair extensions — saying she has “no desire to erase anything” and that she’s “really happy.”

Phillips, 50, also touched on the controversial confession she made in her 2009 book, High on Arrival, that her father John Phillips molested her at 18.

“I’ve learned from thousands of survivors across several continents… that there is no such thing as consensual incest, because of the inherent power,” she said. “I do not believe [my father] had malicious intent… I believe he was a man who was ravaged by drugs and alcohol.”

She said she wouldn’t connect the dots between her revelations and the recent problems of her sister Chynna, who was entered into a rehab program last month.

“I would stop short of saying that this is why Chynna ended up in rehab for anxiety. I love Chynna. And I support her recovery as she supports mine,” she said.

[From Radar Online]

Mackenzie and her giant teeth also addressed the issue of a potential “curse of the child star” in the wake of Corey Haim’s untimely death. She said she didn’t think there was a curse because “any cross section of a demographic whether it be child stars or kids who live in Miami… I think there are a lot of things push a lot of people for a lot of reasons to take a lot of drugs.”

mackenzie3
When asked why she didn’t say silent, Mackenzie said “right now, a child is being raped.” She also started crying. My heart goes out to her and you can see that she’s trying to move on with her life and get past her years of drug abuse. If she feels better having new teeth, hair and a new face then good for her. I think she looked better before, but getting plastic surgery is a more positive coping response then shooting up. Her face looks weird but it’s not as jacked as it could be.

More of Mackenzie’s interview will be in this week’s In Touch.

Mackenzie Phillips’ family bars her from Thanksgiving dinner

wenn2629047

In September, Mackenzie Phillips went public with allegations that her father, Mamas and the Papas member John Phillips raped her and committed incest with her for many years. Mackenzie was releasing a book at the time, and got a huge amount of press for her explosive allegations. Many, including her stepmother (Mamas and the Papas’ Michelle Phillips) said she was wrong to accuse her father of incest now that he’s dead, and if she was going to bring it up she should have done so when he was alive. Not surprisingly, the whole thing has created a huge rift within the Phillips family, and not everyone believes Mackenzie, who has a long history of severe drug addiction.

As a result of all the tension and accusations, Mackenzie has been uninvited to the family Thanksgiving, and is pretty distraught about it.

Actress MACKENZIE PHILLIPS has been told to stay away from her extended family’s Thanksgiving Day get together on Thursday (26Nov09) because she’s not welcome after going public with incest claims against her late father. Phillips stunned the world earlier this year (09) when she revealed she and her father, Mamas & The Papas star John Phillips, had a decade-long romance, which began with a non-consensual sex encounter.

She went public with the shocking revelation in her bestselling book High on Arrival – and then appeared on U.S. TV shows to discuss her twisted relationship with her late dad. The big reveal split her family, with half-sister Chynna supporting her decision to come forward and stepmother Michelle Phillips insisting MACkenzie was wrong to go public with the incest claims.

And now it seems John’s Mamas & The Papas bandmate and ex-wife is having the final say on the controversy by insisting MACkenzie stays away from the family over Thanksgiving. MACkenzie says, “I have been uninvited to the family Thanksgiving, which is very difficult.”

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with U.S. news show Entertainment Tonight, Michelle states she still struggles to believe her recovering drug addict stepdaughter’s incest story: “I respect John, I will always respect him as a musician and a man… If these accusations were gonna be made, they should have been made while John was alive.”

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on Monday (23Nov09), Michelle states, “I really don’t wanna discuss this at all. I refuse to get drawn into the controversy.”

[From Contact Music]

I doubt this could have been that surprising. If Mackenzie’s version of events is true, then obviously what she wants and needs is for her family to rally around her and support her. Being without your family during the holidays is incredibly hard, even if you don’t really like your family. You can pull it together and deal with it once or twice, but it’s one of those things where time doesn’t really heal the wound, it just grows deeper and hurts worse.

Hopefully Mackenzie has other friends and family she can spend the holiday with – ones who are supportive and want her around. Her accusations against her father are much bigger than your typical family drama, and I’d imagine it will be a good long while before they all gather around a holiday table again. Making her own new holiday traditions would be a good idea, instead of relying on her family to provide that right now. I’m sure it’s not the worst thing she’s gone through, but it’s a special kind of ache if you don’t handle it right.

Here’s Mackenzie Phillips signing her new book ‘High on Arrival’ at the ‘Booksoup’ in West Hollywood on October 25th. Images thanks to WENN.com .

Mackenzie Phillips on end of 10 yrs of sex w/ dad; ‘most shocking celebrity story’

mackenzieheader
This story is incredibly shocking, polarizing and disturbing. Yesterday we heard the news that Mackenzie Phillips was about to come out with a bombshell in her new memoir, High on Arrivalshe’d had sex with her own father for over 10 years in a relationship she sort-of classified as “consensual.” Phillips describes the first instance she’d realized that she was sleeping with her father, on the night before her first wedding at the age of 19, and writes that she woke up out of a blackout having sex with him. When she confronted her father later to ask him about the rape, her dad responded that they’d made love. Mackenzie the began an over ten year sexual relationship with her biological father. She does classify it as consensual, but as she explained on Oprah yesterday it was more like “Stockholm Syndrome” where captive people identify with their kidnappers, and she was bombed out of her mind on various drugs the whole time. (Jezebel has a very good editorial on whether a sexual relationship between a parent and child can be considered “consensual” – thanks Mollyb for that link)

Yesterday Mackenzie’s confessional interview aired on Oprah. (There’s a segment on The Huffington Post of the interview and you can watch it there if you’re so inclined. CNN also has a pre-taped segment with Mackenzie in which she talks about how paranoid and out of it she was due to all the drugs she was taking daily.) In a revelation that brings up the cringe factor that much more, Mackenzie says that she ended the relationship with her father when she became pregnant and didn’t know whether the father was her own dad or the man she lived with, the father of her son. She had an abortion that her father paid for and “I never let him touch me again”

There has been much debate as to whether Phillips is believable and what motivation she has for coming out with this incredibly shocking news. Some people say this is personal information best left to one’s therapist and others say that she deserves a lot of credit for coming out with something so stigmatizing that can serve to help other women in this situation. Philips is of course promoting her memoir, and she’s doing a very good job getting the word out by going on Oprah and revealing something so shocking that it’s getting a lot of press.

I watched a segment on CNN live about this issue trying to make sense of it all, because I honestly don’t know how I feel about it. I did find Mackenzie believable on Oprah, but she also kept referencing her book and saying “it’s all in there,” as if trying to compel us to buy it. CNN.com Live anchor Reggie Aqui called this story “in recent memory the most shocking celebrity story I have heard,” and I have to agree. This is way out there. CNN’s Showbiz Tonight’s A.J. Hammer explained why people are skeptical of Mackenzie. “We hear so many shocking tell-alls from celebrities. What can you say that’s going to be over the top, that’s going to give people an incentive to be interested in what you have to say? Well guess what, stuff like this we really haven’t seen.”

Meanwhile Mackenzie’s family is responding to these allegations about their dad John, who died in 2001. One of Mackenzie’s two half sisters, Chynna Phillips, released a statement yesterday supporting her side of the story, and said Mackenzie told her about it over ten years ago and “I knew it was true. I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn’t true?” Other family members aren’t so sure, though, and two of John’s former wives have come out with statements questioning Mackenzie’s story:

mackenzie2

Phillips’ story isn’t without its detractors: Her former stepmother, Genevieve Waite, released a statement to the “Oprah Winfrey Show” denouncing Phillips’ account.

“I am stunned by Mackenzie’s terrible allegations about her father,” Waite wrote. “I would often complain about her overly familiar attitudes towards him, and he said it was just her way. John was a good man. … He was incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, to have sexual relations with his own child.”

“McKenzie’s drug addiction for 35 years has been the result of many unpleasant experiences,” Michelle Phillips, John Phillips’ second wife, told CNN in a statement. “Whether her relationship with her father is delusional or not, it is an unfortunate circumstance and very hurtful for our entire family.”

[From CNN.com]

E! Online has more from John’s second wife Michelle, and she calls Mackenzie “jealous of her siblings” and details an instance where Mackenzie told her about the relationship with John, but then called her back to say she was only joking about.

Meanwhile Mackenzie’s only other full sibling, her brother Tamerlaine, has supposedly recorded a YouTube video responding to his sister’s allegations, which is below (I cannot verify that this is Tamerlaine, so if anyone can please comment with more information. He does have other earlier videos in which he identifies himself as Tamerlaine.) He says he was in boarding schools growing up and has no idea if what Mackenzie is claiming is true. He then goes on to say that he was addicted to drugs and had his life saved by a guru. It sounds like he’s involved in some kind of cult.

We haven’t yet heard from Mackenzie’s other half sister, Bijou, but Mackenzie did say on Oprah that she’s sure her father didn’t touch her two half sisters “I know for a fact that I am the only daughter that this happened to, and I don’t know why he chose me to visit his demons upon.”

Here’s the video from a guy claiming to be Tamerlaine Phillips: “I don’t know if these allegations are true or not. [A guru] saved me, I’ve been sober a long time now. My family is a bowl of dog urine compared to [this guru]. My best wishes to Mackenzie.”

Chynna Phillips on how she heard about her sister’s relationship with their dad

Chynna Phillips
Since “One Day at a Time” star Mackenzie Phillips dropped a bombshell revelation in her new memoir, “High on Arrival” about an incestuous, drug-addled sexual relationship with father John Phillips, there’s been a lot of suspicion about the timing of the announcement. Some are reluctant to believe it happened at all. One person who believes the twisted relationship happened is her half sister, Chynna Phillips. Chynna was approached for comment by US Magazine, and the former Wilson-Phillips singer confirmed that she knew about the incest.

In her new memoir High on Arrival, actress Mackenzie Phillips reveals how she had a 10-year affair with her father, musician John Phillips of the ’60s band the Mamas and the Papas.

And in the new issue of Us Weekly (on newsstands now), her half-sister Chynna Phillips of the hit 90s group Wilson Phillips shares her side of the sad story.

Chynna, 41, tells Us Weekly she remembers getting the call from Mackenzie, 49, in 1997 — 11 years after the affair had ended — while she was between flights at LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

“She said, ‘I don’t know why, but I just really felt the need to call you and tell you something that I think you need to know,’” Chynna tells Us Weekly. “And she went on to tell me that she had had an incestuous relationship with our dad for about 10 years.”

When the affair began, John was married to his third wife, model Genevieve Waïte. Chynna’s reaction, naturally, was complete shock.

“Somebody could have dropped a piano on my head and I probably wouldn’t have felt it,” the singer tells Us Weekly. “But I knew it was true. I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn’t true?”

She says the news sent her into “a deep, deep sadness and depression for about 10 days. A part of me died when I found out.”

In her book, Mackenzie — who, in 2008, pleaded guilty to one count of felony cocaine possession and agreed to enter an 18-month drug deferment program — also claims she and her father did drugs together. (She even tells Oprah Winfrey in an interview Wednesday, “My father shot me up for the first time.”)

Chynna confirms to Us Weekly, “They were both doing drugs together.

“After long nights of heroin use, she’s claiming that she once woke up and that my father was on top of her having sex with her,” Chynna tells Us Weekly. “Was he actually raping her? I don’t know. Do I believe that they had an incestuous relationship and that it went on for 10 years? Yes.”

[From Us Weekly]

The article also goes on to say that Chynna was at first “disgusted” with her sister and distanced herself from McKenzie, but later realized that she needed to support her instead.

From various accounts I’ve read about both John and Michelle Phillips – Chynna’s mother and John’s second wife, whom he started dating when she was only 17 – there were an amazing amount of drugs being taken round the clock while Mackenzie and Chynna were growing up. John Phillips did admit before his death in his memoir, “Papa John,” that he did drugs with Mackenzie when she was just a teenager. Mackenzie has said before in interviews that her father was the first person to inject her with heroin- an addiction that derailed her promising acting career and has gotten her in trouble with the law. Whether the sex was consensual or not, this story is truly disturbing. I always thought this family was messed up – but few people knew the full extent of it.

A lot of people are still questioning why Mackenzie is coming out with this information now, after her father is no longer here to speak on it. I tend to think that’s exactly why she waited. I’m sure the entire family would have been rocked by this while John was alive. Maybe she is hoping she can help someone else who is going through this same thing, but is afraid to speak up. Statistically, incestuous relationships like this are a little more common than most people realize – and very, very wrong.

Mackenzie Phillips’ disturbing revelations on Oprah: raped by her dad

"A Mother's Day Salute To TV Moms" - Arrivals
There are some things that you hear that make you want to plug your ears and loudly sing “lalalala,” and this is definitely one of them. You can figure out from the title what this story is going to entail so if these details bother you, close it out now and don’t read on. Covering this story really makes my stomach flip and it’s not something I’ll easily forget.

Former child star Mackenzie Phillips has a new memoir out, High On Arrival, and an interview that will air on Oprah today. As selfish as this sounds, I’m glad I only have to read about this because if this segment had already aired on Oprah I’d feel compelled to watch it. I just don’t know if I want to hear this straight from Phillips.

Phillips reveals that she had a sexual relationship with her now-deceased dad, John Phillips of the band The Mamas & the Papas, that she thinks started when she was 19 on the night before her first wedding. She tells a very heart-wrenching story of how she got wasted and woke up out of a blackout in bed and having sex with her dad. On Oprah, she says she is “not sure” if this happened before that night and adds “all I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it.” The poor woman. I’m going to excerpt E! Online’s coverage instead of People’s, because E! doesn’t mince words and says right in the title that Phillips was raped. People makes it sound like a consensual sexual relationship and no matter how old she was it’s impossible for me to see it that way:

Mackenzie Phillips, the trouble-plagued eldest daughter of the late Mamas & the Papas frontman John Phillips, says in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, airing tomorrow, that she was a victim of rape at the hands of her famous father.

Phillips says in her new memoir, High on Arrival (which she discussed with the daytime queen), that she confronted John, who died in March 2001, about their sordid past, saying, “We have to talk about when you raped me.”

To which John replied, according to his daughter, “You mean when we made love?”

Ugh.

“Interviewed One Day at a Time’s Mackenzie Phillips,” Winfrey wrote on Twitter this afternoon. Thought I’d heard it all…beyond shocking! We’re airing it Wednesday.”

Phillips, 49, is John’s daughter with his first wife, Susan Adams. Bijou and Chynna Phillips, who also have different moms, are her half-sisters.

The rock-and-roll progeny has battled drug addiction and has been in trouble with the law off and on since she was a teenager, problems that derailed her promising acting career. Most recently, she was arrested for cocaine possession at Los Angeles International Airport last summer.

She also talks in her book about her father supplying her with drugs when she was a kid, an unsavory habit that ultimately led to the biggest parent-child betrayal of all.

“On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it,” Phillips wrote. “I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad’s bed.”

“My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.”

Phillips was 19 at the time.

“I was a fragment of a person, and my secret isolated me,” she wrote.

[From E! Online]

I don’t know what to say about this except that it’s too bad this guy is dead now and doesn’t have to face the consequences of what he did to his own daughter. Some abuse victims have told me that it doesn’t help to seek revenge, though, and that it’s not a constructive or helpful way to deal with the pain and suffering of both the victims and their family. Overall I guess it’s just sad, depressing, and heartbreaking. There’s a lot of sickness in this world.

This creep John Phillips had four other children: Jeffrey, Chynna, Tamerlane and Bijou. Jeffery is Mackenzie’s full brother and Chynna, Tamerlane and Bijou are her half sisters. You may have heard of Chynna Phillips, 41, she was in the band Wilson Phillips, and of Bijou, 29 she’s an actress and model. Bijou’s story of how her father won custody of her when she was in third grade, which I just read on Wikipedia, is troublesome in light of these details from Mackenzie. I wonder if Mackenzie’s brother and half sisters knew about their father and if they’re still in touch.

Mackenzie Phillips goes to rehab for 10th time; charged with felony drug possession

One Day at a Time former teen star Mackenzie Phillips, 48, was busted at the LA airport last week with heroin and cocaine. The drugs were found in her possession as she tried to pass through security and it turns out they weren’t in her hand luggage as we reported earlier, but were in her pants. She got nervous during a routine patdown and told security personnel that she had drugs, saying “I’m holding.” It is also rumored that packets and balloons of drugs fell out of her pocket during the search. It’s hard to tell from reports if she gave herself away or if the drugs were found before she confessed.

Phillips has been charged with two counts of felony drug possession for the cocaine and heroin she was carrying along with a misdemeanor charge for a hypodermic needle. She has now entered rehab for the 10th time. US Weekly reminds us of some statements she’s made in the past about what a difficult and chaotic childhood she had as the daughter of a rock star:

Phillips, 48, was fired from the sitcom One Day at a Time because of her drug addiction 26 years ago.

As a kid, she says she prepared joints for her dad, John Phillips, the founder of the band, the Mamas and the Papas.

“I grew up in mansions, but everything was dirty and broken,” she told USA Weekend magazine in 1999. “Very little was going on inside except sex, drugs and rock and roll.”

Early on, she knew she had a problem.

“The first time I had a drink, it woke up the sleeping monster inside me,” she said.

The actress blew through her $47,500 weekly salary from her sitcom by buying drugs, and soon found herself searching for quarters to buy food.

In 1994, she turned her life around, appearing as a drug counselor on 90210. A few years later, she also starred on Disney show So Weird, saying the network’s producers, “embraced [her] baggage.”

“Why did I survive?” she asked in USA Weekend. “Maybe it’s to say to others, ‘This happened to me. It could happen to you.’ I don’t mind being a poster girl.”

The actress, who most recently appeared in a 2007 episode of Cold Case, has a son, Shane, 21.

[From US Weekly]

That’s really rough and maybe this will be the wakeup call she needs to get clean. Do any of you have relatives or friends who can’t kick hard drugs no matter what they’re going through? Do they go through periods of sobriety where it looks like they’re ok, only to relapse again? It must be very difficult for their family and the people who care about them.

Don’t bring drugs on a plane: Mackenzie Phillips busted for cocaine, heroin

48 year-old actress Mackenzie Phillips, best known for her role on the sitcom One Day A Time over 20 years ago, was busted on possession of cocaine and heroin at LAX today. She was taken into custody after security found the drugs in her carry on luggage. There is no confirmation yet that the packets actually contained drugs, but it sure sounds like from their description:

Mackenzie Phillips has been busted at LAX for allegedly possessing heroin and cocaine. She’s in custody right now.

At 10:00 AM, officers responded to Terminal 4, where 48-year-old Phillips was being screened by TSA. During the screening process, some baggies and balloons believed to contain heroin and cocaine were recovered.

The former “One Day at a Time” star has had a long history of drug abuse.

[From TMZ]

Phillips is the daughter of The Mamas and the Papas lead singer, John Phillips, and was exposed to drug use at an early age. According to NNDB, she was fired from One Day at a Time on two separate occasions after she was late to work and so drunk or stoned she couldn’t function. The first suspension was for a season in 1980. They welcomed her back in 1981 once she got clean, but she fell off the wagon and once again lost her job a couple years later.

Mackenzie has got to be in a bad place if she’s bringing drugs in her hand luggage. Maybe this arrest will be the motivation she needs to clean up. She’s been in rehab a few times and nothing really worked long term for her. At 48, she’s looking at an early death if she keeps using.
