Mariah Carey says she’s not a diva

precious premiere 2 051009

Throughout Mariah Carey’s long career, there have been rumors of insane diva behavior. There’s the infamous one about how she only eats blue M&Ms. Really, her demands have become the stuff of urban legends. A quick google provide the following supposed ridiculous demands:

• Mariah has been known to have 11 bodyguards surround her restaurant table so diners can’t see her eat.
• When signing autographs this week at Selfridges department store, Mariah demanded a £50,000 antique table, covered with silk cloth, to scribble upon, flown in from New York. She sat on a £1,000 throne and was surrounded by roses and butterflies.
• Mariah has a steamy time in the bedroom … but it’s got nothing to do with her sex-life. As part of her obsessive campaign to preserve her all-important vocal cords, she insists on maintaining rainforest levels of humidity.
• She insists on wearing high heels at all times, and has even been filmed in her stilettos while using her home-gym equipment. “I can’t wear flat shoes,” she sighs. “My feet repel them.”
• She only consumes soft drinks through a straw and insists on these being available whenever she makes a personal appearance. She even has people to hold her drink as she sips.

[From the Daily Mail]

However Mariah says that this is all ridiculous and just rumors that have gotten out of hand. She doesn’t say she’s down to earth by any means, but rather that she’s a lot more normal than people think.

MARIAH CAREY insists her “diva” behaviour has been blown out of proportion – critics just to make up stories about her odd mannerisms. The Hero hitmaker has been dogged by claims she is a prima donna throughout her career, with countless bizarre allegations of her backstage demands, but she is adamant the reports are untrue – brushing off rumours she only eats blue M&Ms and once snubbed a hotel because she wasn’t greeted with flowers upon her arrival.

She says, “I try not to be a jerk. I really do. I try to be nice and cordial. I’ve seen the real extreme diva behaviour and I don’t think that’s who I am.

“I think I have mannerisms and that whole thing, and I’m running around in these shoes. But even before I had any type of fame, I was like this. Seriously.

“I don’t even eat (M&Ms)… They said I wouldn’t come into a hotel unless there were petals on the floor. I’m like, ‘Do you really think at 3am I give a s**t what I’m walking on?’”

[From Contact News]

I definitely believe that last one. But I think she’s also doing quite the PR campaign between her praised role in “Precious” (she’s even gotten Oscar buzz) and her talking on and on about babies with Nick Cannon. I think she’s trying to soften her image and appear more grounded. But if that’s the case, it would serve her well to acknowledge that she used to have diva moments and then say something about how she’s matured or something. Because she definitely used to. Because that straw in the soda held by an assistant thing? There’s photographic evidence.

Mo’Nique’s diva act might ruin her Oscar chances for ‘Precious’
The 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards Nominees

One of the early contenders for a major Oscar campaign this year is a little film called Precious. Precious debuted at Sundance to glowing reviews, and just showed at the Toronto Film Festival, once again to rapturous praise. It’s based on the novel Push, by Sapphire, and the film is produced by two of the heaviest hitters out there, Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey. Oprah will be promoting Precious heavily, I think. She’s already had Mariah Carey on her show – that was the episode where Mariah dropped the “motherf-cker” bomb live.

According to IMBD, the film is about: “Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect.” Precious is played by Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe, with Mariah Carey and Mo’Nique in the supporting roles. All three of those actresses have been pegged for Oscar nominations already – with many critics promoting Mo’Nique as the film’s best chance for an Oscar win. Unfortunately, Mo’Nique doesn’t want to do the extensive publicity rounds involved in a serious Oscar campaign – at least, not without getting paid:

Breakout star Mo’Nique isn’t considered that “precious” by executives at Lionsgate, which produced her forthcoming film. In fact, insiders are saying the 41-year-old comedian’s bad attitude and shameless demands for money may jeopardize her chance for Oscar glory – all this before the highly anticipated movie opens on Nov. 6.

The star was MIA Saturday night at the New York Film Festival premiere of the buzzworthy flick “Precious.” She also allegedly ditched her promotional duties during the Toronto Film Festival when she was denied a $100,000 appearance fee.

“That money didn’t even include hair and makeup costs. She also demanded that her glam squad fly first class,” sniped an incredulous industry source. “Apparently, she’s ignorant as to how the Hollywood system works.”

According to our snitch, exasperated studio chiefs suggested that executive producer Oprah Winfrey get involved to deflate Mo’Nique’s substantial ego, but even O couldn’t stop the actress from seeing green.

“Mo’Nique said she signed on to do this film for a small amount of money. She said she didn’t care about ‘no Oscar’ – all that mattered was ‘those Benjamins!’ Because Oprah and Tyler Perry are backing the film, she feels as though there should be a budget to pay for her promotional duties,” the source explains.

But the star’s attitude is starting to work against her. Winfrey and Tyler have reportedly instructed Lionsgate to put their promotional machine behind fellow stars Mariah Carey and Gabby Sidibe for the Oscar race. Those two are adept at playing the game; both turned up in New York and Toronto to push the film for free (although Carey, left, was 30 minutes late to Saturday’s Alice Tully Hall premiere and entered to boos from the audience in response to her tardiness).

“When people say, ‘You care more about money than winning an Oscar,’ well, what does an Oscar mean? An Oscar means more work when you win it, and that means more money!” retorts Mo’Nique in response to the allegations. “I couldn’t eat that Oscar. Everybody needs money, baby. That’s how we survive, right?”

Reps for Winfrey, Tyler and Lionsgate declined to comment, but the film’s director, Lee Daniels, was quick to say, “Mo’Nique is not a diva. She puts her soul into whatever she does. I love her very much.”

He does add, however, that “doing the press is hard for her because she’s in the moment.”

[From Gatecrasher]

Well, I can see both sides to this argument – somebody should be paying for Mo’Nique to make some appearances because there is a lot of money floating around for this extensive Oscar campaign – and it seems like the producers are holding out on Mo’Nique just because she’s not, say, Beyonce. That being said, Mo’Nique should totally tread lightly – pissing off Oprah and Tyler Perry won’t get her anywhere. And it does sound like she has absolutely no idea how Hollywood and/or a major Oscar campaign works. Maybe instead of sniping at each other in the press, someone could sit down and really explain this stuff to Mo’Nique. Something along the lines of “Seriously, Kate Winslet didn’t even get the sh-t you’re asking for. Grow up.”

Mariah Carey performing on Today and looking a little pregnant

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Mariah Carey performed her latest single “Obsessed” on The Today Show this morning, and she looked a little pregnant. Though I guess you can’t be a little pregnant. It could be a bit of weight gain, since Mariah does tend to fluctuate. Earlier this week Mariah told In Touch all about how much she and husband Nick Cannon want to have kids. She could have been setting the stage for a baby announcement soon – but frankly they’ve been talking about kids since they got married. Discussing it at length in an interview and nothing coming of it isn’t that out of the question for them.

Mariah was also on The Today Show on Tuesday to promote the release of her latest album, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.” It’s her twelfth studio album, and she’s had 18 number one hits – second highest right after the Beatles. Celebitchy pointed out that she was moving a bit slowly when she was singing, but if you check out her other videos that’s not unusual for her. She seemed exceptionally happy and glowy, which is so scientifically accurate it’s nearly the same as having Mariah’s positive pregnancy test in front of you. Really, when she seemed the happiest in both interviews was when she was talking about Nick. It’s clear they genuinely love each other, and though I was definitely one of the skeptics when they first got together, they’re now one of my favorite celeb couples.

Nick has made no secret of his desire to have kids, and while Mariah had previously said she didn’t want any, she seems to have quickly changed her tune after meeting him. Considering how clearly in love with him she is, I wouldn’t be surprised if this time it’s legit. Though it would have been great if she timed it to coincide with the release of her album, like she did with her latest perfume.

Mariah Carey: I want babies, thought I would die before I met Nick

image002

As much as the world mocked Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon for getting married so quickly, they actually seem to be doing alright. I can’t quite explain it, but whenever I see the interviewed I can’t help but think that they make sense somehow. They’re still publicity wh*res and all that, but I don’t totally dislike them like I used to. They seem to balance each other out a bit. But, again, being the fame lovers they are, the couple naturally had to sit down with In Touch to talk about babies and marriage and death. Because when in doubt, chat about one of those three and someone will listen. Chat about all of them and you get the magazine’s cover.

After weathering so many ups and downs throughout her career, Mariah Carey has never seemed more at peace. Strolling into a Brazilian restaurant in New York City for an exclusive interview with In Touch, Mariah is nothing like the diva she’s perceived to be. The Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter looks gorgeous, wearing little makeup and dressed casually in black pants, a black shirt and big black belt. Usually guarded about her love life, this time, she’s brought along her husband, Nick Cannon. “I love where I am in life right now,” Mariah, 39, tells In Touch as she sips on a glass of cabernet. And why shouldn’t she? She’s got a man who writes her love notes each morning, even after a year-and-a-half of marriage. She’s got a highly anticipated new album, which dropped September 29. She he is getting Oscar buzz for her gritty role in the upcoming movie Precious. And she and Nick definitely want to start a family! Over dinner, the couple opened up to In Touch about their solid marriage, having a baby and more.

So, are you ready for kids?
Mariah: Definitely, we want a family.
Nick: Yes, of course. It’s at the forefront of our minds. We’re very close. But we want to enjoy our first year together. We didn’t have a stable environment. The first year we were in LA in a hotel and then we were like, “Let’s get a house.”
Mariah: But don’t think I’m moving to LA.
Nick: We live in both places. We need to figure out where we are going to raise our kids. Here or LA.
Mariah: New York.
Nick: LA.

How many kids?
Nick: We’d like two.
Mariah: Of course, we’d be happy with one. I want to be able to manage the right amount of attention. We are so busy — if you have six kids running around, no one gets what they need. Kids need a lot of attention.

Would you consider adoption?
Nick: It’s never out of the question. I was raised by my grandmother, who was also a foster mom, so I grew up around a lot of kids.

So you can see yourself having one by the end of 2010?
Mariah: Yeah. What do you think?
Nick: I think that’s what the world is waiting for.
Mariah: Oh, my goodness, that’s so much pressure on our kids!

It seems like 40 is a pivotal age in Hollywood.
Mariah: I find it offensive. It unfairly taints women in particular, and makes people look at you differently. I lived with that my whole life. Honestly, I never thought I’d live this long.

You thought you’d die by now?
Mariah: I have always been grateful for everything I had, but my personal life was a mess. So many artists just exist for their careers and then burn out quickly. That was me before I met Nick, and he helped me. I always thought that I wouldn’t be here at this point. I was thinking, “Okay, I’ve got another year of my life left. This has got to be the end of it.” Finally, he was like, “Stop talking like that.” I have been obsessed with the whole Marilyn Monroe thing my whole life — all those artists who died young.

[From In Touch Weekly]

I like how Nick said they’d like two kids and Mariah quickly interjects that they’d be fine with one. Before she married him, Mariah had said she didn’t want kids at all. Of course she quickly changed her tune after they’d walked down the aisle. Regardless, it seems like she’s being reasonable when she’s explaining her reason for not wanting a large family, but I sort of get the impression Nick would be happy with a lot of kids. He just seems the sort.

Mariah has certainly had her mental health problems in the past, including a breakdown that landed her in the hospital. But after that she rebounded and started putting out the best songs of her career. It’s sad but not really surprising to hear that she felt so lost and sad that she never thought she’d live another year. It sounds like she was lonely and needed someone to anchor her, and Nick probably does that. We tease that he’s really her personal assistant, but it seems like he has a way of helping her out and being attentive to her and he does it without a fuss. I guess if you were pessimistic you could equate that to a personal assistant, but if you were optimistic you could also say that sort of attentiveness is indicative of a very devoted spouse.

Of course I’m also totally biased because I saw Nick interviewed on the Today Show last week about “America’s Got Talent” (which he hosts) and he was so cute when he was talking about the kids on the show. He’s very charming. I may be totally naïve, but I think he genuinely loves Mariah. I still think she doesn’t really want to have kids, but she must love him too if she’s willing to negotiate on it.

Mariah Carey drops the “motherf–ker” bomb on Oprah – live

90918p7_carey_b-gr_01

We all know that Mariah Carey is so special that butterflies, rainbows and candy fall out of every orifice whenever she walks, sings, burps or farts. This is part of Mariah’s charm. And by “charm” I mean “sure, whatever, Mariah”. Ever since the total camp crapfest known as Glitter, Mariah has been trying to break into films. Part of me thinks that in Mariah’s mind, she’s still competing in a death match with Jennifer Lopez.

So somehow, someway, Mariah was able to get a part in the film Precious. It’s a relatively low-budget film directed by Lee Daniels, starring Mo’nique and Mariah, and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey. Precious premiered at Sundance (to excellent reviews) and was just shown at the Toronto Film Festival - where it took home the equivalent of Best Picture, an award called Cadillac People’s Choice Award. This is the same award that Slumdog Millionaire got last year – heady stuff for a film about “a teenage abuse victim struggling to survive in 1980s Harlem.” Mariah isn’t all diva-fied in the film either. She’s rocking a horrible wig, a moustache, no makeup, and terrible clothes.

So, of course, Oprah had to have Mariah on her “Live From New York” show on Friday. Hugh Jackman and a very stiff-looking Daniel Craig stopped by first, and after they left, I changed the channel, so I didn’t see Mariah’s interview live. I should have stuck around – this interview sounds hilarious. At one point, Oprah was asking Mariah about her physical transformation for the film, and Mariah says, “I didn’t even know what to do, man. I was like, ‘This is so ugly, I don’t know what to do.’ He put dark stuff under my eyes, he … put fluorescent lighting, the most hideous lighting. Some people had the most beautiful, angelic lighting, and I looked at Lee like, ‘You motherf-cker, why did you do this to me?’” Yes, Mariah said “motherf-cker” on live television… on Oprah! Good Lord.

For added hilarity, Mariah’s husband/servant Nick Cannon came out on stage too. It was not pretty:

It was a gesture designed to show the world how in love they were, but Mariah Carey didn’t think much of Nick Cannon’s attempts to kiss her on Oprah.

The singer was being interviewed by talk show host Oprah Winfrey when her husband
came onstage and gave his wife a peck on the cheek.

But Oprah complained: ‘Oh you did that “We’ve been married a long time kiss”. You didn’t give the real kiss, come on.’

They shared an exaggerated smooch as Nick bent her over, before an uncomfortable looking Mariah stopped him, saying: ‘Don’t drop me!’

Then she pushed him away. Mariah, 39, wed R’n'B singer Nick, 28, in April 2008 after they met at the Teen Choice Awards in 2005.

Nick said of their marriage: ‘I wake up feeling like the luckiest, most blessed man every morning.’

And when Oprah asked about the 11-year age difference between them, he said: ‘Age ain’t nothing but a number.’

Nick, who said he had always had a crush on Mariah growing up, said he told her: ‘I’m like, ‘Give me a chance.”

He also revealed that he had proposed by hiding a ring inside a lavender pink lollipop, saying he popped the question as they looked the Empire State Building from her New York apartment roof.

It had been lit up in lavender pink colours to mark her 18th number one record.

Mariah also showed Oprah how to apply her perfume, Forever – by squeezing a few drops between her breasts, and told her that she could learn from her moves. And she also showed off her wedding ring.

Mariah said: ‘He [Nick] designed it and I’m very proud of him.’

The pair appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show live from New York’s Central Park.

[From the Daily Mail]

I actually love Mariah. They don’t make divas like that anymore. Mariah is actually a diva with a reason to be entitled – she’s sold the most, done the most, been the best. She deserves our worship. And if she wants to call one of us – any of us – a “motherf-cker”, well, I’m prepared to let her.

Eminem threatens to release nude pics of Mariah Carey (update: song)

eminem 120509
The epic musically expressed feud between Eminem and his maybe ex-hookup, Mariah Carey, will never die – at least until Eminem finds another ex to fixate on for years. Here’s some quick background – Mariah and Eminem supposedly hooked up way back in late 2002, which Mariah denies, saying they were just friends. Each of them is thought to have referenced the relationship in several songs, with Eminem mentioning Mariah by name occasionally and Mariah just referring to some tool who’s obsessed with her. (Here’s some background on their back and forth, and it’s by no means complete.)

The last we heard in this saga, Mariah’s husband Nick Cannon was calling Eminem racist for lyrics dissing his wife on his latest album, and Mariah was calling Eminem “delusional,” “lying,” and “so so lame” in the song Obsessed from her upcoming album. She possibly even mocking Eminem in the video, in which she cross dresses and dons a goatee and hoodie. (Mariah never names Eminem, but it’s pretty clear who she’s singing about.)

Never one to let an old dusty feud go, Eminem tries to threaten Mariah in his latest rap, saying he has plenty of evidence that they indeed had a relationship and that he’ll release phone messages and photos. (By the way, the source article is wrong that the feud just began “earlier this year.” It goes way back to at least late 2002. Mariah’s song “Clown” on the album “Charmbracelet” is thought to be about Eminem, and Em’s 2003 song “Superman” is thought to reference her.)

Eminem and Mariah Carey are at it again.

On Thursday, the rapper debuted a new song, “The Warning,” slamming his ex and going into full detail about a sexual encounter they once had.

“Only reason I dissed you in the first place is because you denied seeing me. Now I’m pissed off,” he says before he starts his rap.

“You wanna hear something wick wack?/ I got the same exact tattoo that’s on Nick’s back,” he says, referring to Carey’s husband Nick Cannon.

Eminem also blasts Carey for mocking him in her latest music video, “Obsessed.”

“Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee?/ Wow Mariah, didn’t expect ya to go b—s out./ B—h, shut the f— up before I put all those phone calls out/ When you was wilding out/ Before Nick, when you was on my di–,” he raps.

He then threatens to reveal personal pictures he has of the Carey. “Mariah, it ever occur to you that I still have pictures?” he asks.

The feud between the two began earlier this year after Eminem namedropped Carey in the track “Bagpipes From Baghdad” from his latest album Relapse. “Mariah whatever happened to us / Why did we ever have to break-up?” he rapped. “Nick Cannon, you better back the f— up. I’m not playing, I want her back, you punk.”

[From US Weekly]

Eminem, if that sh*t really happened it was over six years ago. Move the f on already. He’s obviously pissed off about Mariah’s song “Obsessed,” but he also knows that keeping this stupid thing going will get him headlines. It’s working and we’re talking about him. I like Eminem’s music and think the guy is talented, but he really has some deep-seated issues, especially with women, and needs to grow up. At least he quit doing drugs.

Update: Here’s the song. It has f-bombs and is NSFW. It’s way worse than I thought. Eminem says he was with Mariah for six months, calls her an alcoholic, and says he only had sex with her once. He also talked about uh, losing his business on her stomach at one point. This guy has no shame.

And here’s Mariah’s “Obsessed”

Mariah Carey apologizes for her performance at Michael Jackson’s memorial

michael jackson tribute 15 070709

Mariah Carey has apologized via Twitter for her performance at Michael Jackson’s memorial. Personally I thought she did a great job considering she was obviously overcome with emotion. At the beginning of her song “I’ll Be There” (A Jackson 5 cover she originally released as a successful single in the early nineties), she could barely get the words out and her voice was shaking and cracking. It clearly wasn’t done for show. Watching it live, it was impossible not to have a panicked “oh holy crap” moment when it seemed like everything was going to go to hell. Mariah pulled it together relatively well, but those first few seconds were rocky to say the least.

Mariah Carey has apologized for singing a less than perfect version of ‘I’ll Be There’ at the Michael Jackson memorial service.

Many fans took note of Mariah’s sloppy singing, but the diva explains emotions simply got the best of her.

In a series of posts on Twitter, Mariah commented, “Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me. I could barely keep myself from crying. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me. One thing I know is, we will never really have to say goodbye to MJ. His legacy lives on through his music and the millions of people he inspired with his timeless music. He will be forever in our hearts.”

[From Starpulse]

Even though that last part of Mariah’s Twitter is a little cheesy, her performance actually made me like her a lot more. It showed her humanity and vulnerability, and was probably the first time I saw her as a real person instead of a performer. I definitely don’t think she has anything to apologize for. Her song wasn’t flawless, but it was real. Real grief isn’t flawless, to say the least. It’s a time where you break down and everything often goes to hell in a hand basket. Mariah pulled it together and that didn’t happen, but if anything I think it made her more likable as a person, regardless of other people’s comments about the professionalism of her performance.

Mariah Carey dresses as a man for new video

fp_3209884_carey_asman_nyc_062909
Here is Mariah Carey as a man. She went transgendered for the video shoot for “Obsession”, her new single. I don’t even know what to say about this. Mariah Carey is not the woman I thought she was. I thought Mariah was all about butterflies, sparkles, bubbles, pink, glitter, and basically everything “girly”. But Mariah makes a half-decent man, doesn’t she? And by “half-decent” I mean “exactly like the kind of skuzzy faux-gangster boys I went to high school with.”

Not to go on and on about this picture, but what’s up with the eyebrows and the goatee? I like how even though Mariah is playing some kind of scumbag, her goatee is still beautifully manicured. Michael K at Dlisted is making a joke about how Mariah is playing Eminem. I don’t really see that – Eminem’s facial hair isn’t that luscious.

You know what I’ll give Mariah credit for? Two things – first, she looks younger as a man. Second, props for not taking herself so seriously that she always has to be butterflied and baby-oiled. Or is this just narcissism? Did Mariah tell her music video director that the only man she could have in her video would be herself?

Mariah Carey has put on 15 pounds and loves it

fresh air fund 5 040609

Mariah Carey has always been famous for her curvy figure. She’s also taken some heat for it at times – sometimes she looks fairly trim, while at others some websites have pointed out that she’s barely straddling the line between heavy and curvy. The most amazing thing is the way she’ll appear to gain or lose twenty pounds overnight – her figure-hugging clothing can really confuse the eyes.

One of Mariah’s friends admits her weight bounces around, and says Carey loves to eat, especially when she’s enjoying herself. But it sounds like Mariah has a pretty relaxed and fairly healthy attitude about her weight, everything considered. Plus it keeps her name in the press for the whole “Is she/isn’t she pregnant” thing.

UNLIKE some starving show-business stars, Mariah Carey (above) celebrates her success with much-deserved meals. “Mariah loves food. Right now she’s making an album and eating everything and anything she wants. She has put on about 15 pounds, but she loves the curves,” said our source. Our tipster adds, “She’ll definitely tone up again when she releases her album, but as of now, she’s stuffing her face.”

[From Page Six]

I’m sure some health nuts will argue that 15 lbs is too much to bounce back and forth between, but frankly if you’re a bouncer (and some people just are), it’s not that bad. Janet Jackson bounces up and down by at least 60 pounds. She’ll just disappear and you’ll see a few shocking fat grocery store photos of her, then after a year she’ll be back with 8 pack abs or something. It’s insane. Mariah’s fluctuations seem fairly normal to me, and she never lets it get out of hand. Personally I think she looks good curvy, and it’s nice to see women who are comfortable with their bodies whatever their shape or age. I’d like it if she’d tone down the skin-hugging mini dresses, but that’s not an age or shape issue, but one of style. She’s been rocking that look since 1992 – might be time to mix it up a bit.

Here’s Mariah Carey at the Fresh Air Fund ‘Salute to American Heroes’ at Tavern on the Green in Central Park on Saturday. Images thanks to WENN.com .

Mariah Carey blames 9/11, director for failure of ‘Glitter’

mariah_carey_max_beesley_glitter_002
Mariah Carey is speaking out about the failure of her first starring film role, Glitter, all those years ago. Mariah knows the film wasn’t that great – in fact, she blames the director in a hilarious aside, saying “But I didn’t have representation or anyone to tell me: ‘What you need is a great director’.” Snort, chuckle. Because that’s why Glitter failed – everyone said, “I really want to see that Mariah Carey movie, but the director sucks.” Of course.

Beyond the bad direction, Mariah knows where to really lay the blame, though. Right at the feet of the terrorists who struck America on September 11th, 2001. Yes, Mariah thinks Glitter would have been received differently if only the release date hadn’t been September 11th. Yes, that must be it:

Mariah Carey says her infamously bad movie debut Glitter failed because of 9/11.

The singer — who stars in new movie Precious – says her semi-biographical film was destined to bomb at the box office as it was released on exactly the same day as the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center eight years ago.

“That movie was released on September 11th, 2001 – could there be a worse day for that movie to come out? I don’t think so,” she said. “I don’t even know that many people even saw the movie so I don’t think it’s the worst thing ever done.”

“Glitter was a learning experience and I wouldn’t do it again if you paid me. But I didn’t have representation or anyone to tell me: ‘What you need is a great director’.”

Carey, 39, recently played down her reputation as a diva — insisting she is simply misunderstood.

“I have been through a lot that’s made me stronger,” she said. “They say: whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. So I’ve been through that kind of stuff a few times.”

“A lot of people have very different opinions about me and it’s difficult to face them and to deal with them and to go on and to say: no, actually you’re wrong. I am this, I am not that.”

[From Showbiz Spy]

I don’t have a problem with Mariah generally, she’s pretty harmless. But what started out as a gentle mocking of Glitter is turning into Mariah’s decade-long delusion that she would be a big movie star if only an epically horrible national tragedy struck just when she was trying to make it big in movies. Yes, Mariah is self-absorbed, this is not breaking news. But you’d think that even after all of these years, Mariah would still want to pepper her words with a little perspective. Something like “Glitter wasn’t released at the right time, no one was in the mood for it because we were all terrified and grief-stricken, and my heart still goes out to the 9/11 families.” Something like that.

By the way, this isn’t the first time Mariah has blamed 9/11, or the first time she’s played fast and loose with the quality of Glitter. Several years ago, she famously said, “The talk shows needed something to distract from 9/11. I became a punching bag. I was so successful that they tore me down because my album was at number 2 instead of number 1. The media was laughing at me and attacked me…Glitter was ahead of its time. Today it’s ‘in’ to make 80’s music.” Oh, Mariah. Get a grip.

Here’s the trailer for Glitter
